The mechanical performances and water retention characteristics of clays, stabilised by partial substitution of cement with by-products and inclusion of a nanotechnology-based additive called RoadCem (RC), are studied in this research. The unconfined compression tests and one-dimensional oedometer swelling were performed after 7 d of curing to understand the influence of addition of 1% of RC material in the stabilised soils with the cement partially replaced by 49%, 59% and 69% of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GBBS) or pulverised fuel ash (PFA). The moisture retention capacity of the stabilised clays was also explored using the soil-water retention curve (SWRC) from the measured suctions. Results confirmed an obvious effect of the use of RC with the obtained strength and swell properties of the stabilised clays suitable for road application at 50% replacement of cement. This outcome is associated with the in-depth and penetrating hydration of the cementitious materials by the RC and water which results in the production of needle-like matrix with interlocking filaments – a phenomenon referred to as the ‘wrapping’ effect. On the other hand, the SWRC used to describe the water holding capacity and corresponding swell mechanism of clays stabilised by a proportion of RC showed a satisfactory response. The moisture retention of the RC-modified clays was initially higher but reduced subsequently as the saturation level increased with decreasing suction. This phenomenon confirmed that clays stabilised by including the RC are water-proof in nature, thus ensuring reduced porosity and suction even at reduced water content. Overall, the stabilised clays with the combination of cement, GGBS and RC showed a better performance compared to those with the PFA included.  相似文献

This paper argues for the need to design broad economic policy instruments to reverse the trend in many developing countries toward increasing degradation and destruction of natural resources. The natural resource base, often critical for economic development, is in many cases threatened by a rapid population growth, the effect of which is compounded by inadequately controlled land and water use.Policy interventions which have a pervasive effect must be established to influence the environmentally-related behavior of countless, relatively small-scale, resource-using activities which take place throughout a nation's economy. Natural resource management should thus become a standard element of macroeconomic and sector analysis, and the physical linkages between sectors need to be critically examined.Governments must overcome major institutional and political obstacles. New approaches, providing incentives and rewards to policy makers, must be developed to increase interagency cooperation while avoiding overlapping jurisdictions and to prevent vested interests from paralyzing new initiatives.The views expressed in this paper are those of the author, and should not be attributed to the World Bank, to its affiliated organizations, or to any individual acting on their behalf. Should housing improvement be part of economic development strategies? Must housing improvement wait until high-economic growth is attained? How much priority should be given to housing in view of the limited resources in less-developed countries? What are housing benefits in economic development vis-à-vis other economic investments? These questions have generated heated debates, both in the literature on development problems and in planning and practice in the 1950s and 1960s. This paper draws on the accumulated body of knowledge resulting from past experiences in research and policy to revisit the earlier debates, survey the main lines of argument and reassess the economic potential of housing. It then attempts to generate broad policy considerations. The main contention of this paper is that in light of past and present evidence, the housing sector needs to be given serious consideration in economic growth strategies.  相似文献
