Light‐emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) have emerged as some of the simplest light‐emitting devices. Indeed, numerous LECs have been produced using fluorescent polymers; however, initial LEC structures require a mixture of polymers and electrolytes, thus strictly limiting their applicability. In contrast, recent advances in device technologies and material synthesis have opened a route for LECs using nonpolymeric materials. This progress report focuses on current developments in the device concepts, mechanisms, and characteristics of LECs that allow the utilization of nonpolymeric materials. First, the three primary device types, namely, electrochemically doped, ionic‐material, and electrostatically doped LECs, are categorized, and their distinct features are described. Second, electrochemically doped LECs based on small molecules and branched molecules are introduced. Then, an overview of the rapidly growing field of ionic‐material LECs, especially ionic transition metal complexes, ionic small molecules and perovskites, and their characteristics are provided. Following these results, recent achievements in solid‐state materials, such as inorganic single crystals, quantum dots, and 2D materials, as electrostatically doped LECs are highlighted. Finally, an overview and evaluation of these LECs reveal the key directions and remaining issues that must be overcome to further functionalize LECs, which provide a versatile approach for new lighting applications comprising emergent materials.  相似文献

Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) are increasingly used in displays replacing traditional flat panel displays; e.g., liquid crystal displays. Especially, the paradigm shifts in displays from rigid to flexible types accelerated the market change from liquid crystal displays to OLEDs. However, some critical issues must be resolved for expansion of OLED use, of which blue device performance is one of the most important. Therefore, recent OLED material development has focused on the design, synthesis and application of high‐efficiency and long‐life blue emitters. Well‐known blue fluorescent emitters have been modified to improve their efficiency and lifetime, and blue phosphorescent emitters are being investigated to overcome the lifetime issue. Recently, thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters have received attention due to the potential of high‐efficiency and long‐living emitters. Therefore, it is timely to review the recent progress and future prospects of high‐efficiency blue emitters. In this feature article, we summarize recent developments in blue fluorescent, phosphorescent and thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters, and suggest key issues for each emitter and future development strategies.  相似文献

Light‐emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are solid‐state lighting devices that convert electric current to light within electroluminescent organic semiconductors, and these devices have recently attracted significant attention. Introduced in 1995, LECs are considered a great breakthrough in the field of light‐emitting devices for their applications in scalable and adaptable fabrication processes aimed at producing cost‐efficient devices. Since then, LECs have evolved through the discovery of new suitable emitters, understanding the working mechanism of devices, and the development of various fabrication methods. LECs are best known for their simple architecture and easy, low‐cost fabrication techniques. The key feature of their fabrication is the use of air stable electrodes and a single active layer consisting of mobile ions that enable efficient charge injection and transport processes within LEC devices. More importantly, LEC devices can be operated at low voltages with high efficiencies, contributing to their widespread interest. This review provides a general overview of the development of LECs and discusses how small molecules can be utilized in LEC applications by overcoming the use of traditional lighting materials like polymers and ionic transition metal complexes. The achievements of each study concerning small molecule LECs are discussed.  相似文献

In response to the call for a physiologically‐friendly light at night that shows low color temperature, a candle light‐style organic light emitting diode (OLED) is developed with a color temperature as low as 1900 K, a color rendering index (CRI) as high as 93, and an efficacy at least two times that of incandescent bulbs. In addition, the device has a 80% resemblance in luminance spectrum to that of a candle. Most importantly, the sensationally warm candle light‐style emission is driven by electricity in lieu of the energy‐wasting and greenhouse gas emitting hydrocarbon‐burning candles invented 5000 years ago. This candle light‐style OLED may serve as a safe measure for illumination at night. Moreover, it has a high color rendering index with a decent efficiency.  相似文献

Highly power‐efficient white organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) are still challenging to make for applications in high‐quality displays and general lighting due to optical confinement and energy loss during electron‐photon conversion. Here, an efficient white OLED structure is shown that combines deterministic aperiodic nanostructures for broadband quasi‐omnidirectional light extraction and a multilayer energy cascade structure for energy‐efficient photon generation. The external quantum efficiency and power efficiency are raised to 54.6% and 123.4 lm W?1 at 1000 cd m?2. An extremely small roll‐off in efficiency at high luminance is also obtained, yielding a striking value of 106.5 lm W?1 at 5000 cd m?2. In addition to a substantial increase in efficiency, this device structure simultaneously offers the superiority of angular color stability over the visible wavelength range compared to conventional OLEDs. It is anticipated that these findings could open up new opportunities to promote white OLEDs for commercial applications.  相似文献

MXenes (Ti3C2) are 2D transition‐metal carbides and carbonitrides with high conductivity and optical transparency. However, transparent MXene electrodes suitable for polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) have rarely been demonstrated. With the discovery of the excellent electrical stability of MXene under an alternating current (AC), herein, PLEDs that employ MXene electrodes and exhibit high performance under AC operation (AC MXene PLEDs) are presented. The PLED exhibits a turn‐on voltage, current efficiency, and brightness of 2.1 V, 7 cd A?1, and 12 547 cd m?2, respectively, when operated under AC with a frequency of 1 kHz. The results indicate that the undesirable electric breakdown associated with heat arising from the poor interface of the MXene with a hole transport layer in the direct‐current mode is efficiently suppressed by the transient injection of carriers accompanied by the alternating change of the electric polarity under the AC, giving rise to reliable light emission with a high efficiency. The solution‐processable MXene electrode can be readily fabricated on a flexible polymer substrate, allowing for the development of a mechanically flexible AC MXene PLED with a higher performance than flexible PLEDs employing solution‐processed nanomaterial‐based electrodes such as carbon nanotubes, reduced graphene oxide, and Ag nanowires.  相似文献

Color down‐converting filters with fluorescent proteins (FPs) embedded in a polymer matrix have led to new bio‐hybrid light‐emitting diodes (Bio‐HLEDs), featuring stabilities of 100 h and <1 min at low and high applied currents, respectively. Herein, the FP deactivation mechanism in Bio‐HLEDs at high driving currents is deciphered. Primarily, the nonradiative energy relaxation of FPs upon excitation promotes the release of excess energy to the polymer matrix, reaching 60 °C and, in turn, a significant thermal emission quenching. This is circumvented by changing the device architecture, achieving stabilities of >300 h at high driving currents. Here, the photoinduced deactivation mechanism takes place, consisting of a slow and reversible partial dehydration followed by a quick and irreversible deactivation of the highly emissive ionic form. This is supported by steady‐state/time‐resolved emission, circular dichroism, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic techniques. Overall, the limitations of Bio‐HLEDs concerning matrix, buffers, device design, and FP stability are highlighted as key aspects to achieve efficient and stable devices.  相似文献

Since the first report in 2015, multiresonant thermally activated delayed fluorescent (MR‐TADF) compounds, a subclass of TADF emitters based on a heteroatom‐doped nanographene material, have come to the fore as attractive hosts as well as emitters for organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). MR‐TADF compounds typically show very narrow‐band emission, high photoluminescence quantum yields, and small ΔEST values, typically around 200 meV, coupled with high chemical and thermal stabilities. These materials properties have translated into some of the best reported deep‐blue TADF OLEDs. Here, a detailed review of MR‐TADF compounds and their derivatives reported so far is presented. This review comprehensively documents all MR‐TADF compounds, with a focus on the synthesis, optoelectronic behavior, and OLED performance. In addition, computational approaches are surveyed to accurately model the excited state properties of these compounds.  相似文献

Two compounds, 2,3‐dicyano‐5,6‐di(4′‐diphenylamino‐biphenyl‐4‐yl)pyrazine (CAPP) and 6,7‐dicyano‐2,3‐di(4′‐diphenylamino‐biphenyl‐4‐yl)quinoxaline (CAPQ), capable of intramolecular charge transfer, have been designed and synthesized in high yield by a convenient procedure. The compounds have been fully characterized spectroscopically. They have a high thermal stability and show bright light emission both in non‐polar solvents and in the solid state. Moreover, they exhibit excellent reversible oxidation and reduction waves. The higher energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital (–5.3 eV) and the triphenylamine group are advantageous for hole‐injection/transport. In addition, the high electron affinities of 3.4 eV and the observed reversible reductive process suggest that these compounds enhance electron injection and have potential for use in electron transport. Three types of non‐doped red‐light‐emitting diodes have been studied using CAPP and CAPQ as the electron‐transporting and host‐light‐emitting layers, respectively. The devices exhibit red electroluminescence (EL), and constant Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates have been observed on increasing the current density. Pure red EL of CAPP, with a maximum brightness of 536 cd m–2 and an external quantum efficiency of 0.7 % in ambient air, was achieved.  相似文献

A study of hybrid light‐emitting diodes (HyLEDs) fabricated with and without solution‐processible Cs2CO3 and Ba(OH)2 inorganic interlayers is presented. The interlayers are deposited between a zinc oxide electron‐injection layer and a fluorescent emissive polymer poly(9‐dioctyl fluorine–alt‐benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) layer, with a thermally evaporated MoO3/Au layer used as top anode contact. In comparison to Cs2CO3, the Ba(OH)2 interlayer shows improved charge carrier balance in bipolar devices and reduced exciton quenching in photoluminance studies at the ZnO/Ba(OH)2/F8BT interface compared to the Cs2CO3 interlayer. A luminance efficiency of ≈28 cd A?1 (external quantum efficiency (EQE) ≈ 9%) is achieved for ≈1.2 μm thick single F8BT layer based HyLEDs. Enhanced out‐coupling with the aid of a hemispherical lens allows further efficiency improvement by a factor of 1.7, increasing the luminance efficiency to ≈47cd A?1, corresponding to an EQE of 15%. The photovoltaic response of these structures is also studied to gain an insight into the effects of interfacial properties on the photoinduced charge generation and back‐recombination, which reveal that Ba(OH)2 acts as better hole blocking layer than the Cs2CO3 interlayer.  相似文献

Since the first demonstration of light‐emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) in 1995, much effort has been made to develop this technology for display and lighting. A common LEC generally contains a single emissive layer blended with a salt, which provides mobile ions under a bias. Ions accumulated at electrodes facilitate electrochemical doping such that operation voltage is low even when employing high‐work‐function inert electrodes. The superior properties of simple device architecture, low‐voltage operation, and compatibility with inert metal electrode render LECs suitable for cost‐effective light‐emitting sources. In addition to enormous progress in developing novel emissive materials for LECs, optical engineering has been shown to improve device performance of LECs in an alternative way. Light outcoupling enhancement technologies recycle the trapped light and increase the light output from LECs. Techniques to estimate emission zone position provide a powerful tool to study carrier balance of LECs and to optimize device performance. Spectral tailoring of the output emission from LECs based on microcavity effect and localized surface plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles improves the intrinsic emission properties of emissive materials by optical means. These reported optical techniques are overviewed in this review.  相似文献

We report the design and synthesis of three alcohol‐soluble neutral conjugated polymers, poly[9,9‐bis(2‐(2‐(2‐diethanolaminoethoxy) ethoxy)ethyl)fluorene] (PF‐OH), poly[9,9‐bis(2‐(2‐(2‐diethanol‐aminoethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl)fluorene‐alt‐4,4′‐phenylether] (PFPE‐OH) and poly[9,9‐bis(2‐(2‐(2‐diethanolaminoethoxy) ethoxy)ethyl)fluorene‐alt‐benzothiadizole] (PFBT‐OH) with different conjugation length and electron affinity as highly efficient electron injecting and transporting materials for polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs). The unique solubility of these polymers in polar solvents renders them as good candidates for multilayer solution processed PLEDs. Both the fluorescent and phosphorescent PLEDs based on these polymers as electron injecting/transporting layer (ETL) were fabricated. It is interesting to find that electron‐deficient polymer (PFBT‐OH) shows very poor electron‐injecting ability compared to polymers with electron‐rich main chain (PF‐OH and PFPE‐OH). This phenomenon is quite different from that obtained from conventional electron‐injecting materials. Moreover, when these polymers were used in the phosphorescent PLEDs, the performance of the devices is highly dependent on the processing conditions of these polymers. The devices with ETL processed from water/methanol mixed solvent showed much better device performance than the devices processed with methanol as solvent. It was found that the erosion of the phosphorescent emission layer could be greatly suppressed by using water/methanol mixed solvent for processing the polymer ETL. The electronic properties of the ETL could also be influenced by the processing conditions. This offers a new avenue to improve the performance of phosphorescent PLEDs through manipulating the processing conditions of these conjugated polymer ETLs.  相似文献

Strong intermolecular interactions usually result in decreases in solubility and fluorescence efficiency of organic molecules. Therefore, amorphous materials are highly pursued when designing solution‐processable, electroluminescent organic molecules. In this paper, a non‐planar binaphthyl moiety is presented as a way of reducing intermolecular interactions and four binaphthyl‐containing molecules ( BNCM s): green‐emitting BBB and TBT as well as red‐emitting BTBTB and TBBBT , are designed and synthesized. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the molecules are systematically investigated and it is found that TBT , TBBBT , and BTBTB solutions show high photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiencies of 0.41, 0.54, and 0.48, respectively. Based on the good solubility and amorphous film‐forming ability of the synthesized BNCM s, double‐layer structured organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) with BNCM s as emitting layer and poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK) or a blend of poly[N,N′‐bis(4‐butylphenyl)‐N,N′‐bis(phenyl)benzidine] and PVK as hole‐transporting layer are fabricated by a simple solution spin‐coating procedure. Amongst those, the BTBTB based OLED, for example, reaches a high maximum luminance of 8315 cd · m−2 and a maximum luminous efficiency of 1.95 cd · A−1 at a low turn‐on voltage of 2.2 V. This is one of the best performances of a spin‐coated OLED reported so far. In addition, by doping the green and red BNCM s into a blue‐emitting host material poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl) high performance white light‐emitting diodes with pure white light emission and a maximum luminance of 4000 cd · m−2 are realized.  相似文献

The charge transport and recombination in white‐emitting polymer light‐ emitting diodes (PLEDs) are studied. The PLED investigated has a single emissive layer consisting of a copolymer in which a green and red dye are incorporated in a blue backbone. From single‐carrier devices the effect of the green‐ and red‐emitting dyes on the hole and electron transport is determined. The red dye acts as a deep electron trap thereby strongly reducing the electron transport. By incorporating trap‐assisted recombination for the red emission and bimolecular Langevin recombination for the blue emission, the current and light output of the white PLED can be consistently described. The color shift of single‐layer white‐emitting PLEDs can be explained by the different voltage dependencies of trap‐assisted and bimolecular recombination.  相似文献

The charge transport in blue light‐emitting polyspirobifluorene is investigated by both steady‐state current‐voltage measurements and transient electroluminescence. Both measurement techniques yield consistent results and show that the hole transport is space‐charge limited. The electron current is found to be governed by a high intrinsic mobility in combination with electron traps. Numerical simulations on light‐emitting diodes reveal a shift in the recombination zone from the cathode to the anode with increasing bias.  相似文献

Using imidazole‐type ancillary ligands, a new class of cationic iridium complexes ( 1 – 6 ) is prepared, and photophysical and electrochemical studies and theoretical calculations are performed. Compared with the widely used bpy (2,2′‐bipyridine)‐type ancillary ligands, imidazole‐type ancillary ligands can be prepared and modified with ease, and are capable of blueshifting the emission spectra of cationic iridium complexes. By tuning the conjugation length of the ancillary ligands, blue‐green to red emitting cationic iridium complexes are obtained. Single‐layer light‐emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on cationic iridium complexes show blue‐green to red electroluminescence. High efficiencies of 8.4, 18.6, and 13.2 cd A?1 are achieved for the blue‐green‐emitting, yellow‐emitting, and orange‐emitting devices, respectively. By doping the red‐emitting complex into the blue‐green LEC, white LECs are realized, which give warm‐white light with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.42, 0.44) and color‐rendering indexes (CRI) of up to 81. The peak external quantum efficiency, current efficiency, and power efficiency of the white LECs reach 5.2%, 11.2 cd A?1, and 10 lm W?1, respectively, which are the highest for white LECs reported so far, and indicate the great potential for the use of these cationic iridium complexes in white LECs.  相似文献

A new series of full hydrocarbons, namely 4,4′‐(9,9′‐(1,3‐phenylene)bis(9H‐fluorene‐9,9‐diyl))bis(N,N‐diphenylaniline) (DTPAFB), N,N′‐(4,4′‐(9,9′‐(1,3‐phenylene)bis(9H‐fluorene‐9,9‐diyl))bis(4,1‐phenylene))bis(N‐phenylnaphthalen‐1‐amine) (DNPAFB), 1,3‐bis(9‐(4‐(9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)phenyl)‐9H‐fluoren‐9‐yl)benzene, and 1,3‐bis(9‐(4‐(3,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)phenyl)‐9H‐fluoren‐9‐yl)benzene, featuring a highly twisted tetrahedral conformation, are designed and synthesized. Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) comprising DNPAFB and DTPAFB as hole transporting layers and tris(quinolin‐8‐yloxy)aluminum as an emitter are made either by vacuum deposition or by solution processing, and show much higher maximum efficiencies than the commonly used N,N′‐di(naphthalen‐1‐yl)‐N,N′‐diphenylbiphenyl‐4,4′‐diamine device (3.6 cd A?1) of 7.0 cd A?1 and 6.9 cd A?1, respectively. In addition, the solution processed blue phosphorescent OLEDs employing the synthesized materials as hosts and iridium (III) bis[(4,6‐di‐fluorophenyl)‐pyridinato‐N, C2] picolinate (FIrpic) phosphor as an emitter present exciting results. For example, the DTPAFB device exhibits a brightness of 47 902 cd m?2, a maximum luminescent efficiency of 24.3 cd A?1, and a power efficiency of 13.0 lm W?1. These results show that the devices are among the best solution processable blue phosphorescent OLEDs based on small molecules. Moreover, a new approach to constructing solution processable small molecules is proposed based on rigid and bulky fluorene and carbazole moieties combined in a highly twisted configuration, resulting in excellent solubility as well as chemical miscibility, without the need to introduce any solubilizing group such as an alkyl or alkoxy chain.  相似文献
