Tribocorrosion has considerable effects on AISI 304L used in olive processing equipment. In fact, some investigations have been conducted to compare the tribocorrosion behavior of AISI 304L to UNS 2205 stainless steels sliding against alumina in olive pomace–tap water filtrate. The active and passive surface states involved in tribocorrosion mechanisms of the steels have accordingly been analyzed. Mechanical and corrosion wear components were quantified. It was revealed that the tribocorrosion mechanism was dominated by mechanical removal. The mechanical resistance of UNS 2205 proved to be more important than that of AISI 304L. Furthermore, UNS 2205 was more sensitive to corrosion under sliding than AISI 304L due to its two-phase microstructure.  相似文献

High temperature gas nitrided AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel containing 0.55 wt% N in solid solution, was corrosion, erosion and corrosion-erosion tested in a jet-like device, using slurry composed of 3.5% NaCl and quartz particles. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of the damaged surfaces, mass loss measurements and electrochemical test results were used to understand the effect of nitrogen on the degradation mechanisms. Increasing the nitrogen content improved the corrosion, erosion and corrosion-erosion resistance of the AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel. Smoother wear mark contours observed on the nitrided surfaces indicate a positive effect of nitrogen on the reduction of the corrosion-erosion synergism.  相似文献

Wear and corrosive wear involve mechanical and chemical mechanisms and the combination of these mechanisms often results in significant mutual effects. In this paper, tribological behavior, X-ray peak broadening, and microstructure changes of carbon steel AISI 1045 and stainless steel AISI 304 samples under simultaneous wear and corrosion were investigated and the results were compared with those obtained from dry wear tests. 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was used as the corrosion agent and a pin-on-disk tribometer was employed to perform wear and corrosive wear tests.X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that by increasing the applied load, the worn surfaces of carbon steel samples reached a constant strain at which fracture and wear occurred. Whereas in 304 stainless steel samples, by increasing the applied load, broadening of X-ray diffraction peaks was decreased.Wear tests of carbon steel and stainless steel samples have shown smaller weight losses and lower friction coefficient in the presence of corrosive environment. Study of worn surfaces suggested that depending on wear environment and applied load, different features of wear mechanisms were involved.  相似文献

The erosion-corrosion of mild steel (BS6323), in the presence and absence of physically vapour deposited (PVD) TiN and CrN coatings, was studied, in comparison with that of AISI 304 stainless steel, in an aqueous alkaline slurry solution containing alumina particles. The influence of applied potential and particle velocity on the total erosion-corrosion loss was examined, and the respective corrosion and erosion damage (both contributing to the overall weight loss) then assessed by means of microscopical investigation of the morphology of the damaged surface, and subsequently evaluated quantitatively. The superior erosion-corrosion resistance of both the coatings compared to that of the uncoated mild and stainless steels was shown to be due to their resistance to both wear and corrosion. According to the detailed corrosion mechanisms revealed and different responses to wear, schematic diagrams were proposed to outline the main features of the corrosion-erosion process and the individual roles of erosion and corrosion. Discrete differences, in terms of the respective erosion and corrosion processes, between the TiN and CrN coatings, and between the mild and stainless steels, were also investigated and discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The role of ferric oxide nanoparticles on the lubricating characteristics of passivating films formed on stainless steel (SS) was discussed in this study. The tribo-electrochemical behavior of mirror-like polished AISI 304 SS, used as an exemplary material, was evaluated in various electrolytes by means of a simulated chemical–mechanical polishing process in laboratory scale. It was clearly demonstrated that a suitable combination of abrasives (ferric oxide nanoparticles) and an oxidizer (nitric acid) can act as an effective lubricant that lowers the friction and wear of the AISI 304 SS surfaces. The excellent lubricating and anti-corrosion properties shown by a slurry containing a high content of ferric oxide nanoparticles at high nitric acid concentrations were attributed to the formation of a stable and robust passive film that was composed of chromium oxide and a mixture of iron oxides. The lack of ferric oxide nanoparticles in two solutions containing nitric acid of different concentrations led to pitting corrosion and abrasive wear. When low concentrations of both ferric oxide nanoparticles and nitric acid were used, wear-accelerated corrosion became the dominant mechanism that was caused by the presence of third-body wear particles in the contact zone.  相似文献

Corrosive wear of materials is a complex surface failure process, which involves both the wear-accelerated corrosion and the corrosion-accelerated wear. Separating contributions of these two processes to the total material loss is of significance for gaining better understanding of the wear-corrosion synergy. Previous studies have generated an electrochemical scratch technique for measuring the wear-accelerated corrosion, based on which other components involved in the wear-corrosion synergy can be determined. In this article, a new phenomenon in measuring the wear-accelerated corrosion is reported. It was observed that for non-passivation materials there existed a stirring effect (by pin), which significantly affected the measurement. The resultant mistake was serious. The previous technique was modified accordingly and applied to determine the corrosion-wear synergy of AISI 1045 steel in comparison with that of AISI 304 stainless steel.  相似文献

Austenitic steel surfaces are laser cladded using a 4 kW continuous wave CO2 laser with coaxial powder feeding nozzle to investigate the improvement in slurry erosion characteristics. Colmonoy-6 and Inconel-625 are cladded on AISI 316L steel and AISI 304L steel, respectively by laser cladding. Initially, single-pass clad track is overlaid to optimize the laser processing parameters, namely scanning speed and powder feed rate to obtained a sound clad. Minimum cracks, porosity and distortion were found at scanning speed of 0.1 m/min and powder feed rate of 12 g/min. For these parameters, the dilution was 17.33% for Colmonoy-6 and 40% for Inconel-625. To clad large surface area, the optimized laser processing parameters were used to deposit the clad tracks with 60% overlap. Maximum surface hardness of 746 VHN is obtained in case of Colmonoy-6 clad on AISI 316L steel and is 352 VHN in case of Inconel-625 clad on AISI 304L steel. EDAX analysis shows higher degree of mixing of substrate material in the clad pool of Inconel-625 than Colmonoy-6. The results of slurry erosion test of Colmonoy-6 clad surface have shown improvement in erosion resistance of the order of 1.75–4.5 times of the substrate AISI 316L steel at all impact angles and the maximum wear angle has also increased which can be attributed to the increase in the surface hardness. However, Inconel-625 laser clad surface has shown little improvement in erosion resistance of the substrate AISI 304L steel at shallow impact angles with no significant improvement at normal impact condition. The SEM micrographs of worn out Colmonoy-6 clad surfaces at shallow impact angles show that the material is removed mainly by micro-cutting which increases with increase in the impact angle.  相似文献

The present study concerns development of a hard in situ boride-dispersed composite layer on the surface of AISI 304 stainless steel substrate to improve the wear resistance property. Laser processing was carried out by melting the surface of sand-blasted AISI 304 stainless steel substrate using a continuous wave CO2 laser and simultaneous deposition of a mixture of K2TiF6 (potassium titanium hexafluoride) and KBF6 (potassium hexafloroborate) (in the weight ratio of 2:1) using Ar as shrouding environment. Powder feed rate was maintained constant at 4 g/min. Irradiation results in dissociation of a pre-deposited mixture along with a part of the stainless steel substrate, intermixing and rapid solidification to form the composite layer on the surface. The micro-structure of composite layer consists of dispersion of titanium boride particles in AISI 304 stainless steel matrix. Volume fraction of particles is found to be uniform throughout the composite layer, though varied with laser parameters. The micro-hardness of the surface was improved 250–350 VHN as compared to 220 VHN of the AISI 304 stainless steel substrate with a significant improvement in wear resistance property. The mechanism of wear was found to be a combination of adhesive and abrasive in as-received stainless steel. However, it was predominantly abrasive for laser composite surfaced stainless steel.  相似文献

The influence of oil lubrication on the fretting wear behaviors of 304 stainless steel flat specimens under different fretting strokes and normal loads has been investigated. The results proved that fretting regimes and fretting wear behaviors of 304 stainless steels were closely related to the fretting conditions. In general, the increase in normal load could increase wear damage during sliding wear. However, according to the results, a significant reduction in wear volume and increase in friction coefficient was observed when the normal load was increased to critical values of 40 and 50 N at a fretting stroke of 50 μm due to the transformation of the fretting regime from a gross slip regime to partial slip regime. Only when the fretting stroke further increased to a higher value of 70 μm at 50 N, fretting could enter the gross slip regime. There was low wear volume and a high friction coefficient when fretting was in the partial slip regime, because oil penetration was poor. The wear mechanisms were fatigue damage and plastic deformation. There was high wear volume and low friction coefficient when fretting was in the gross slip regime, because the oil could penetrate into the contact surfaces. Unlike the wear mechanisms in the partial slip regime, fretting damage of 304 stainless steels was mainly caused by abrasive wear in the gross slip regime.  相似文献

This paper is an attempt to further clarify and classify the range of wear modes which can occur at the interface between steel surfaces subjected to sliding motion, a variety of speeds and loads, with and without lubrication. Previous researchers have been able, from examination of the wearing surfaces, to identify a number of distinct wear modes and to classify them according to operating conditions. The present paper shows that it is possible to arrive at a comparable classification of wear modes based on examination of the wear debris rather than the worn surfaces. Consequently, it is possible to determine the wear modes in a machine from observation of the debris in the lubricant without requiring access to the wear surfaces themselves. The wear particles were generated by rotating a cylindrical sleeve of AISI 52100 steel in contact with three types of fixed wearing surfaces, crossed AISI 52100 steel cylinders, fixed spherical balls of AISI 52100 and AISI 1018 steel and a flat plate of AISI 1018 steel. Surface speeds ranged from 0.19 to 5.0 m/s and the load from 1 to 80 kg. These particles were collected and examined in both an optical and a scanning electron microscope. X-ray diffraction studies of selected particle types were also made. These studies revealed six different wear regimes which depended on the test parameters. Each regime produced wear particles of characteristic morphology and composition. All of the types of particles studied here have been found in the lubricating oil of field operating machines.  相似文献

The tribological behavior of 30 vol% carbon fiber–reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFRPEEK) against AISI 431 steel under different temperatures of water lubrication was investigated. Friction and wear tests were carried out on a disc-on-disc contact test apparatus under different operating conditions. The results reveal that the lubricant temperature has a significant effect on the friction and wear properties of CFRPEEK sliding against AISI 431 steel. The average friction coefficient and wear rate of CFRPEEK increase with increasing lubricant temperature. However, the wear rate of AISI 431 steel did not have a positive correlation with the wear rate of CFRPEEK under different temperatures of water lubrication. Moreover, the original and worn surfaces of CFRPEEK and AISI 431 steel were imaged by environmental scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, respectively. The main tribological mechanisms of CFRPEEK sliding against AISI 431 steel were adhesive wear, and increasing the temperature of the lubricant could accelerate wear.  相似文献

Corrosive wear of materials is a complicated surface failure process. The synergism of wear and corrosion involves both the wear-accelerated corrosion and the corrosion-accelerated mechanical failure. In this work, attempts were made to determine mass losses from these two processes using an electrochemical scratch technique. 340 stainless steel and a cast iron were studied as sample materials. For both the materials, the wear-accelerated corrosion was significantly higher than the static corrosion, due to the failure of passive film or adsorption layer. Regarding the corrosion-accelerated wear, 304 steel showed higher resistance, attributed to its passivation capability and associated protective passive film.  相似文献

Tests were conducted at 25 and 85 °C to evaluate the corrosion wear resistance of selected stainless steels in potash brine using a reciprocating motion wear apparatus. Four materials were tested: Ferralium 255 (UNS S32550), AL6XN (UNS N08367), 254SMO (UNS S31254) and AISI 1018 (UNS G10180) for comparative purposes. The evaluation methods employed included weight loss analysis, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that Ferralium 255 has superior corrosion wear resistance in potash brine environment compared to AISI 1018 plain-carbon steel and the other stainless steels tested. Wear surface analysis using SEM shows evidence of brittle fracture damage, which is attributed to the presence of Cl.  相似文献

Dry sliding wear performance of a squeeze cast aluminium alloy-alumina fibre composite has been examined in this investigation using a pin-on-disc machine. A composite in the form of a pin was evaluated against a rotating EN 25 steel disc. The wear response of the base alloy was also studied to assess the influence of a reinforcing phase over a range of applied pressures until the onset of seizure. Incorporation of alumina fibres resulted in superior wear performance of the base alloy, i.e. reduced wear loss, improved seizure pressure and reduced rise in temperature near contact surfaces. Onset of seizure in general caused significantly higher wear loss and temperature rise and large adhesion of the specimen material to the disc surface. A longitudinal cross-section of worn samples suggested nominal wear-induced microstructural changes and deformation in the subsurface regions. The wear surfaces revealed smooth and continuous grooves with less damaged regions prior to onset of seizure, while severe surface damage was observed thereafter. Similarly, debris particles generated during onset of seizure were coarser. The presence of deeper grooves on the wear surfaces and iron mass in the debris particles indicated abrasion to be one of the wear mechanisms in addition to adhesion. That the debris particles were mainly of flake type consisting of microcracks indicated that material removal occurred mainly by delamination.  相似文献

It has been established that the superelastic effect of TiNi alloy is related to a reversible martensitic transformation; that is, stress-induced transformation. The high elastic recovery of TiNi alloy has made it a potential candidate for high wear resistance applications. In the present study the tribological behavior of superelastic TiNi alloy was studied and compared to Ni, Ti, and AISI 304 stainless steel using dry sliding wear and friction tests. The effect of normal load and testing temperature on superelasticity has been investigated. It has been found that although AISI 304 stainless steel and superelastic TiNi alloy have similar hardness, TiNi exhibits superior wear resistance. The wear rate of AISI 304 stainless steel is over four times higher than TiNi. The superior wear resistance of TiNi and the effect of load and temperature on wear were discussed and related to the reversible martensitic phase transformation, as well as self-accommodation and stabilization of martensite.  相似文献

Austenitic stainless steels are used in applications demanding general corrosion resistance at room or moderate operating temperatures. However, their use is often limited by the relative softness of these materials and their suceptibility to wear and galling. The present investigation deals with the dry sliding wear behaviour of two P/M austenitic stainless steels (AISI 304L and 316L) and their composites containing two different ceramic particles (Al2O3 and Y2O3) and two different sintering activators (BN and B2Cr). Unlubricated pin-on-disc wear tests were carried out. Wear mechanisms were analysed by means of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A plastic deformation and particle detachment wear mechanism was revealed. Plasticity during sliding induced an austenite to martensite transformation. The presence of ceramic particles (Al2O3 and Y2O3) and sintering activators (B2Cr, BN) improved significantly the wear resistance (especially the combination Al2O3 and B2Cr). Ceramic particles limited plastic deformation while sintering activators decreased final porosity.  相似文献

High speed sliding wear of AISI 1020 steel, AISI 304 stainless steel and commercially pure titanium (75A) was studied using a pin-on-ring geometry. All the tests were carried out in air without any lubricant. The sliding speed was 0.5–10.0 m s?1 and the normal force was 49.0 N (5 kgf). The friction coefficient of all the materials tested decreased with the sliding speed; this appears to be a consequence of oxide formation. The wear rate of 304 stainless steel increased monotonically with speed, whereas the wear rate of 1020 steel and titanium first decreased and then increased and again decreased, with a maximum occurring at about 5 m s?1. The complex variation of the wear rate as a function of speed is explained in terms of the dependence of the friction coefficient, hardness and toughness of the materials on temperature. Microscope examinations of the wear track, the sub-surface of worn specimens and the wear particles indicate that the wear mode was predominantly by subsurface deformation, crack nucleation and growth processes, i.e. the delamination process, similar to the low speed sliding wear of metals. Oxidative and adhesion theories proposed in the past to explain the high speed sliding wear of metals are found to be incompatible with the experimental observations.  相似文献

The wear rates of an AISI 52100 carbon steel and a type 316 austenitic stainless steel and the corrosion current I from the rubbing steels were measured in NaCl solution to study the interrelationship between the corrosion and wear of the steels. An on-off cyclic loading test was also conducted to examine the effect of static corrosion during an unloading period on the corrosive wear of the steels.

It was found that the wear rates of the carbon steel and the type 316 stainless steel reach a maximum at NaCl concentrations of about 3% and 0.1% respectively. The on-off cyclic test has shown that corrosive wear of the steels is influenced by static corrosion during an unloading period. The increment †I of the corrosion current due to sliding was associated with the corrosive wear rate of the steels.  相似文献

The low-stress three body abrasion behaviour of a range of steels was investigated. The tests were carried out in a rubber wheel tester (according to ASTM G65-94, reapproved in 2000) at room temperature. The abrasive particles used were angular alumina particles of four different sizes. The results showed that, in general, the smaller particles (50 and 125 μm average size) caused more damage. With these particles, observations of surface morphology indicated a more intense cutting and ploughing action, leading to more damage, whereas bigger particles i.e. larger 250 and 560 μm particles produced less damage, and their action involved more plastic deformation type wear. The 304 SS had a lower abrasion resistance than the 310 SS. For the austentic and ferritic steels the subsurface deformation was larger for impact with the coarser particles. Variations in substrate hardness had no effect on the abrasive behaviour observed. On the whole, the hardest steel (mild steel in martensitic condition) showed the higher extent of damage, irrespective of particle size.  相似文献
