Abstract

The blunting line and fracture toughness in commercially pure titanium under mode I and mixed mode I/III loading was studied. A modified compact tension geometry was used for determining the blunting line as well as mixed mode I/III fracture toughness. The results showed that the constraint factor m in the blunting line equation under mode I loading was 1.84. Also, there was no effect of notch root radius on the slope of the blunting line. The blunting line slope under mixed mode I/III loading was found to be lower than that under mode I loading and agreed with empirical correlations. The fracture toughness under mode I loading was found to be higher for specimens with larger notch root radius. However, notch root independent fracture toughness could be obtained from blunt notch specimen tests using stretch zone width measurements. The fracture toughness was found to decrease with increasing mode III loading.

The circular notched compact specimens, along with standard specimens having straight or chevron notch are provided for fatigue and fracture toughness testings in order to study the crack observation capability during fatigue pre-cracking, skewness of the crack front, and the resulting fracture toughness KQ. The test results indicated that circular notched specimens significantly facilitate the crack observation during fatigue testing as the cracks initiate on both surfaces of the specimen. No remarkable differences were observed on geometries of the fatigue crack front obtained and the resulting fracture toughness among these three types of specimen. The macroscopic observation of beach marks on the fracture surfaces revealed that, in the present material Ti-6Al-4V (ELI), the advance of only 1.3% of the whole crack length corresponded to the load level at which fracture toughness KQ was evaluated.

Crack-tip transformation zones, crack shielding and crack-growth-resistance (R-curve) behaviors of a transformation-toughened ceria-partially stabilized zirconia–alumina (Ce-TZP/alumina) composite were studied in mode II and combined mode I and mode II loading using compact-tension-shear (CTS) specimens. The mode II and mode I stress intensities for both the initial straight cracks and the subsequent kinked cracks were assessed by the method of caustics using geometrically equivalent specimens of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The angle of formation of the transformation zones as well as of extension of the cracks increased systematically with increasing ratio of the mode II and the mode I stress intensities and approached a value of θ*=−72° in pure mode II loading. This angle was close to the angle for maximum hoop tension in the stress field of a mode II crack (θ*=−70.5°). A crack-initiation toughness envelope was constructed on a KIKII diagram using the critical loads for incremental crack extension. The crack-initiation toughness in pure mode II loading was less than the corresponding toughness in mode I loading. This result was consistent with calculations that indicated no shielding from the asymmetric and elongated zones developed in mode II loading. The fracture toughness measured for the kinked cracks at long kink lengths approached the maximum fracture toughness measured for a mode I crack.

The fracture toughness of single‐crystal silicon thin films oriented to (100) and (110) was investigated by tensile testing under both 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 loading conditions. The specimen was fabricated from a p‐type Czochralski (CZ)‐grown wafer and passed through a thermal process during the fabrication of the test device. The measured fracture toughness is dependent on the loading direction in the tensile test and independent of the specimen surface orientation. The test results were 1.94 MPa√m in the 〈100〉 direction and 1.17 MPa√m in the 〈110〉. In these tests, no longitudinal size effect on the fracture stress or fracture toughness was observed. The SEM photographs obtained from the fracture specimens after the tensile test show that the crack initiated from the notch tip and propagated straight in the across‐the‐width direction on the (110) or (111) cleavage plane.

Abstract— Continuous low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests with-and without-hold time in push-pull and torsion loading modes and sequential LCF tests in push-pull mode were carried out at 650°C in air on thin tubular specimens of 316 stainless steel; the sequential tests involving pure fatigue (PF) and creep-fatigue (CF) loadings. The growth of short fatigue cracks was studied by taking several replicas from the specimen surface which were subsequently observed under a scanning electron microscope. An analysis was done with respect to both crack density and the orientation of microcracks and macrocrack(s) which led to failure.
Crack density was higher on the surface of a CF tested specimen than that of a PF tested specimen. Mainly short cracks oriented at 45° to the specimen axis were observed on a torsion fatigue tested specimen surface. For push-pull specimens the microcracks propagated perpendicular to the specimen axis to form macrocracks that propagated in the same direction. On the other hand, for torsion specimens the microcracks which initially propagated at 45° to the specimen axis linked to form macrocracks oriented parallel and perpendicular to the specimen axis. However, the macrocrack responsible for the final fracture was always oriented parallel to the specimen axis.
Cumulative damage was dependent on the type of loading (PF or CF) in the first part of sequential tests. In particular microcracks initiated during an initial damage phase observed under sequential LCF tests in PF were found to be healed by oxide formation during the hold times applied in the subsequent CF loading and this produced a total damage summation significantly larger than one.

Size effect of concrete members applied with flexural compressive stresses
In this study, two types of special experiments are carried out to understand flexural compressive strength size effect of concrete members. The first type is an ordinary cylindrical specimen (CS) with a fully penetrated and vertically standing plate type notch at the mid-height of the specimen, which is loaded in compression at the top surface (e.g., in the parallel direction to the notch length). The second type is a general double cantilever beam (DCB), which is compression loaded in axial direction (e.g., in the parallel direction of the notch). For CS, an adequate notch length is taken from the experimental results obtained from the compressive strength experiment of various initial notch lengths. The trial tests to select the effective initial notch length show that CS with an initial notch length approximately greater than four times the maximum aggregate size fails without an additional increased load and in stable manner under Mode I failure mechanism. Therefore, the initial notch length to the maximum aggregate size ratio of 4.0 is used for all size specimens. For DCB, the eccentricity of loading points with respect to the axial axis of each cantilever and the initial notch length are varied. In both specimens, the compressive loads apply flexural compressive stresses on the crack tip region of the specimens. These two types of specimens fail by Mode I crack opening mechanism. By testing 3 geometrically proportional size specimens for CS and DCB, the experimental datum for flexural compression size effect of concrete are obtained. Using the obtained flexural compressive strength size effect datum, regression analyses are performed using Levenberg-Marquardt's least square method (LSM) to suggest new parameters for the modified size effect law (MSEL). The analysis results show that size effect is apparent for flexural compressive strength of specimens with an initial notch. For CS, the effect of initial notch length on flexural compressive strength size effect is apparent. For DCB, flexural compressive size effect is dependent on the eccentricity of loading points with respect to the axial axis of the cantilever beam. In other words, if DCB specimen is applied with greater tensile stress at the crack tip, the size effect of concrete becomes more distinct. The results show that the flexural compressive strength size effect of initial notch length variation of DCB exists but directly dependent on the loading location. This is due to the fact that the sizes of fracture process zone (FPZ) of all DCB specimens are similar regardless of the differences in the specimen slenderness ratio, but the flexural compressive and tensile stress combinations resulting in stress concentration at the crack tip region has direct effect on size effect of concrete members.

A test system has been developed at The George Washington University for testing flat-sheet, center-cracked specimens over a wide range of applied biaxiality ratios. The test system provides independent control of the two perpendicular axes, with either phased static or cyclic loading (selectable phase angles) or completely independent loading functions possible. A photoelastic study was performed for several variations in specimen geometry, and the results showed good agreement with analytical predictions and other photoelastic results of similar specimen geometries. Two polymers, PMMA and PVC, and three aluminum alloys encompassing a wide range of ductility were tested. The fracture toughness values of both polymers decreased with increasing load biaxiality. The load biaxiality was found to have a strong influence on the crack growth direction in PMMA and a negligible influence on the PVC. The toughness values for 7075-T6 aluminum increased with increasing biaxiality, while for the more ductile 2024-T3 and 6061-T4 intermediate peak toughness values were observed at a biaxiality ratio of 0.5. The fracture toughnesses at the highest biaxiality ratios were approximately equal to the uniaxial results, which suggest the possibility that the tabs parallel to the cracks may have pulled off, thus releasing the biaxial constraint.

A new testing procedure is suggested for measuring the fracture toughness of brittle materials as superconductors and ceramics. The idea is to perform a compression test on a subcompact square specimen which contains a central hole. The presence of the hole induces a tensile stress at a certain small region attached to the hole. In this region an artificial notch is introduced such that the fracture path satisfies a pure tensile opening mode (mode I) to which the linear fracture mechanics rules apply. The stress distribution on the fracture plane guarantees a certain amount of stable crack extension. The relationship between the critical compressive load and the stress intensity factor is formulated via an available Green function along with a numerical solution (FEM with ANSYS code). The testing procedure is demonstrated with specimens made of two types of tungsten carbide which differ by their grain size only. Test results are examined via fracture toughness and strength values produced by other conventional methods and the agreement is very good. The geometry and loading direction enable the fracture toughness results to be relatively insensitive to the notch tip radius and the crack length, thereby relaxing the requirements for accurate measurements. The small size of the suggested specimen (12.70mm×12.70mm×5mm) and the avoidance of gripping interfaces provide the major cost-wise advantages.

Fracture behavior of a two-phase TiAl alloy was investigated using notched specimens. Fracture surfaces and metallographic sections of surviving notch in double notched specimens are observed. The fracture process of notched specimens of TiAl alloys was described as that several inter-lamellar cracks initiate and extend directly from the notch root and propagate preferentially along the interfaces between lamellae and stop at various obstacles. With increasing applied load, cracks connect with each other and propagate further by translamellar cracks. The toughening mechanisms, which make the main crack difficult to propagate or cause it to be stopped, could be reducing the driving force for crack propagation. The higher toughness of near fully lamellar microstructure than that of finer duplex microstructure is attributed to the path of crack propagation. On the fracture surfaces of the finer duplex microstructure, more low-energy-spending interlamellar fracture facets are observed, which means that it is easier for crack to bypass a fine duplex lamellar grain with lamellae perpendicular to the main crack and to take a interlamellar path.

Fracture behavior of vinyl ester resin and the methods that can be used to toughen vinyl ester resin were studied. Neat resin, 5% by weight nanoclay, 5% by weight core shell rubber (CSR) and hybrid system (3% nanoclay and 2% CSR by weight) were the material systems considered for comparing fracture toughness. Three types of cracks were used to determine the stress intensity factors at failure, viz., sharp crack, blunt crack and notch. The critical stress intensity factor in the case of sharp cracks improved significantly when compared to neat resin. In the case of notched and blunt cracked specimens, a reduction in stress intensity factors (at failure) was observed for reinforced systems. However, for notched and blunt cracked specimens, it was shown from the morphology of the fracture surface that the stress intensity factor calculated by assuming a notch or a blunt crack as an ideal crack was not the controlling parameter for fracture. A method for quantifying the crack tip sharpness using fracture surface roughness has been proposed.

Stress singularity of a transverse crack normal to ply-interface in a composite laminate is investigated using analytical and finite element methods. Four-point bending tests were performed on single-notch bend specimens of graphite/epoxy laminates containing a transverse crack perpendicular to the ply-interface. The experimentally determined fracture loads were applied to the finite element model to estimate the fracture toughness. The procedures were repeated for specimens under cryogenic conditions. Although the fracture loads varied with specimen thickness, the critical stress intensity factor was constant for all the specimens indicating that the measured fracture toughness can be used to predict delamination initiation from transverse cracks. For a given crack length and laminate configuration, the fracture load at cryogenic temperature was significantly lower. The results indicate that fracture toughness does not change significantly at cryogenic temperatures, but the thermal stresses play a major role in fracture and initiation of delaminations from transverse cracks.

The crack propagation direction may affect weld metal fracture behavior. This fracture behavior has been investigated using two sets of single edge notched bend (SENB) specimens; one with a crack propagating in the welding direction (B×2B) and the other with a crack propagating from the top in the root direction (B×B) of a welded joint. Two different weld metals were used, one with low and one with high toughness values. For Weld Metal A, two specimen types have been used (B×B and B×2B) both with deep cracks. The weld metal A (with high toughness values) has reasonably uniform properties between weld root and cap. The resulting J-R curves show little effect of the specimen type, are ductile to the extent that the toughness exceeds the maximum Jmax, value allowed by validity limits and testing is in the large –scale yielding regime. In the case of weld metal B (with low toughness values) with two specimen types (B×B and B×2B) the B×B specimen has shallow cracks while the B×2B specimen has deep cracks. Both resulting J-R curves show unstable behavior despite the fact that the types of specimen and their constraints are different. The analysis has shown that crack propagation direction is most influential for a weldment with low toughness in the small scale yielding regime, whereas its influence diminishes due to ductile tearing during stable crack growth and large scale yielding. The results have shown that these effects are different in both the crack initiation phase and during stable crack growth, indicating a dependence on weld metal toughness and the microstructure of the weld metal. It can be concluded that, if resistance curves during stable crack growth do not show differences in both notch orientations, the fracture toughness values of the whole weld metal can be treated as uniform.

The relationship between translaminar fracture toughness measured at initiation and specimen initial notch root radius is investigated for the translaminar failure mode of cross-ply IM7/8552 carbon/epoxy laminates. Compact tension specimens with four sizes of notch root radii were tested; the true initiation toughness of the laminate was measured from specimens with notch tip radii of ρ ? 250 μm. Testing of specimens with larger notch root radii, ρ = 750 μm, yielded an apparent toughness that was found to be 30% higher than the true toughness of the laminate. The propagation toughness corresponding to the R-curve plateau was found not to be affected by the initial notch tip radius. Investigation of the fracture surfaces of failed specimens revealed that there is no interaction between the 0° and 90° ply failure mechanisms, and that the critical notch radius is a property intrinsic to the 0° plies of the laminate.

A simple method was developed for evaluating the interfacial fracture toughness of coatings on substrates using circumferentially notched tensile (CNT) specimens. Mild steel cylindrical substrates of 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60° notch angles with electroplated nickel were tensile tested. A well defined pre-crack was introduced at the interface for the quantitative evaluation of adhesion. In situ acoustic signals and scanning electron microscope were used to analyze the crack initiation and propagation. Finite element analyses were used to evaluate the critical interface energy release rate. The size of the plastic zone was determined for different notch angles to validate application of the linear elastic approach in determining the interfacial fracture toughness. The validity requirements have been proposed for this specimen, considering the yield strength of the coating and substrate, pre-crack position, notch angle and plastic zone size. The obtained interfacial fracture toughness values using CNT specimens was found to be very close to the values obtained by others using standard specimens.

In this paper, interface crack initiation at V-notches along adhesive in bonded Polycarbonate (PC) and Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) subjected to mixed-mode loading conditions was investigated based on a combined experimental, finite element and matched asymptotic analysis. The V-notch specimens with an adhesive interface starting from its tip made at different notch angles were tested under three-point bending conditions. The experimental observations show that the specimens mainly fail by cracks along the interface. Also, the load at the crack initiation increases when the notch angle increases. The computational results are then used to explain and to correlate with the experimental data. A two-fold criterion developed by Leguillon (Eur J Mech A/Solids 21:61?C72 2002) that requires a simultaneous satisfaction of both Griffith energy and stress conditions for the crack initiation at a notch in the specimen made of a homogeneous brittle material is first extended for V-notch specimens under mixed-mode loading conditions and then used to estimate the crack initiation load. The estimated loads appear to agree well with the experimental data. Finally, an inverse method is proposed to estimate the values of fracture toughness at different mode mixity ratios.

The possibility of stable initiation and propagation of cracks from the edge of a notch with oblique front is established for specimens made of brittle tool materials. The compliance calibration of compact specimens weakened by notches with oblique front is obtained with the help of approximation of the experimental data by the method of least squares and applied to the evaluation of fracture toughness along the oblique profile in the process of wedging of a compact specimen.
