Abstract

This article presents the results of numerical simulation and experimental study of a multi-pin electrohydrodynamic (EHD) dryer. Combined effect of EHD flow and the external air cross-flow on drying performance was investigated with 3-D numerical model, which accounts for electric field, electric charge transport, external air cross-flow and material-gas moisture transport. Effect of cross-flow air stream on drying was positive in the range of low velocities, changing to negative at high velocities due to counteracting with EHD flow. Numerical simulation predicted previously unknown effect of EHD flow on the cross-flow air stream, which was quantified as an increase of airway resistance. This prediction was fully validated by experiments. Both numerical simulation and experiment proved that for given intensity of EHD flow there is an optimum value of the cross-flow, resulting in maximum drying performance. The numerical model can be applied to determine the optimal operating parameters for multi-pin EHD dryer.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Suspensions, slurries and paste-like materials can be dried in the Mechanically Spouted Bed ( MSB) dryer with men packing. The circulation of the men particles characteristic of classical spouted beds is provided with a houseless conveyor screw mounted in the vertical axis of the bed. Radioactive isotopic tracer technique was used for measurement of the cycle time distribution ( CTD) of the spherical inert particles as a function of the operational parameters of drying. The variances ( σ2) of the CTDs and the particle velocity m the various zones of the MSB dryer were calculated. The circulation of the mert particles can be characterised by nearly plug flow. According to the physical model of drying on inert packing the heat and mass transfer coefficients were calculated. Que to the relativeiy uniform film-like, wet coating formed on the surface of the spheical inert particles, the drying process may be characterised with the constant rate of drying. A method has been elaborated for calculation of drying time, hereby the partial processes of drying on inert particles can be synchronised.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel type of dryer for experimentally evaluating the drying kinetics of seeded grapes. In the developed drying system, it has been particularly included an expanded-surface solar air collector, a solar air collector with phase-change material (PCM) and drying room with swirl element. An expanded-surface solar air collector has been used to achieve high heat transfer and turbulence effect whiles a solar air collector with PCM has been used to perform the drying process even after the sunset. On the other hand, the swirl elements have been located to give the swirl effect to air flow in drying room. These advantages make the proposed novel system a promising dryer in that lower moisture value and less drying time. The drying experiments have been carried out simultaneously both under natural conditions and by the dryer with swirl flow and without swirl flow at three different air velocities. The obtained moisture ratio values have been applied to six different moisture ratio models in the literature. The model having the highest correlation coefficient (R) and the lowest Chi-square (χ2) value has been determined as the most relevant one for each seeded grape drying status.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

One of the fundamental problems encountered in the batch dryer design field is the determination of appropriate equipment configuration that would ensure uniform distribution of air over the dryer trays. Such industrial batch dryer aerodynamics problems can be successfully investigated using computational fluid dynamics techniques. A mathematical model for predicting the two-dimensional air flow inside a typical industrial batch dryer equipment is developed and analyzed. The model consists of the full set of partial differential equations that describe the conservation of mass and momentum inside the dryer. The standard k-E model is used to describe turbulence in addition to the governing conservation equations. Distribution of drying air within the dryer is regulated using adjustable air blast blades in the entrance section of the drying chamber. An appropriate configuration of these flow adjusting devices is proposed so that an adequately uniform drying air distribution pattern inside the drying chamber is achieved. Finally, a characteristic design case is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.  相似文献

The performance of energy consumption in the closed-loop tumbler dryer with a condenser for clothes drying is evaluated as a function of the heater capacity, the drying air flow rate inside the dryer, and the cooling air flow rate. The clothes dryer in laundries used in this study consists of a tumbling drum, condenser for condensing the humid and hot air flowing out the rotating drums, and electric heater for heating the circulating drying air. Tests were performed at the heating capacity of 1.9 kW to 2.7 kW, the drying air flow rate of 60 m3/h to 140 m3/h, and the cooling air flow rate of 100 m3/h to 240 m3/h. The total energy consumption, the drying time, and the condensate water rate were also investigated. Parametric results showed that a larger heater power resulted in shorter drying time. With increasing heater power, the air temperature and the condensate rate increased due to the higher humidity ratio in the air. The drying air flow rate and the cooling air flow rate did not have a significant effect on drying performance.  相似文献

A control volume-based technique implemented in FLUENT (ANSYS Inc., Canonsburg, PA) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package was applied along with the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) to simulate the flow pattern and heat and mass transfer processes for sludge material in a large-scale cyclone dryer. The drying characteristics of sludge at the dryer inlet were obtained from a previous study on the drying of sludge in a large-scale pneumatic dryer. User-defined subroutines were added to extend FLUENT's capability to account for mixture properties and to simulate the constant and falling rate drying periods. The convective heat and mass transfer coefficients were modeled using published correlations for Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the effect of gas-phase velocity and temperature on the final product outcome. Numerical predictions for the multiphase flow hydrodynamics showed a highly diluted region in the dryer core and a higher concentration of particles close to the wall region, an indication of nonuniform distribution of particles at a cross-sectional area. The numerical predictions for the hydrodynamic profiles qualitatively depicted the flow behavior natural to these designs. The work demonstrated the successful application of CFD in the design stage of a combined pneumatic-cyclone dryer model.  相似文献

The mixing and drying behavior in a continuous fluidized bed dryer were investigated experimentally by characterizing the residence time distribution (RTD) and incorporating a micromixing model together with the drying kinetics obtained from batch drying. The RTD of the dryer was modeled using a tank-in-series model. It was found that a high initial material loading and a low material flow rate resulted in a reduced peak height and broaded peak width of the RTD curve. To predict the continuous dryer effluent moisture content, we combined: (a) the drying kinetics as determined in a batch fluidized bed dryer, (b) the RTD model, and (c) micromixing models—segregation and maximum mixedness models. It was found that the segregation model overpredicted the effluent moisture content by up to 5% for the cases we have studied while the maximum mixedness model gave a good prediction of the effluent moisture content.  相似文献

Abstract

The drying rates in moving bed dryers are compared. The gas and the solids to be dried are in parallel flow or counterflow. A new simplified method to simulate the drying in parallel and counterflow moving beds is developed. This model is based on the solution of arbitrary experimental or theoretical drying rate Equations of single solid particles (or thin-layer drying rate equation) coupled with heat and mass conservation Equations of the dryer. The solution is presented in an integral form of the drying equation showing the relation between time or location in the dryer and degree of drying. The method allows rapid calculation of the moisture, vapor mass fraction, and temperature distributions along the dryer in drying with moist air or steam. The model is demonstrated by using a result based on the receding front evaporation model as the specific thin-layer drying equation in the moving bed model. Wood chips are chosen as an example of the substance to be dried, but the method applies also for other medium, if the dependence of the drying rate on moisture and ambient temperature and humidity (thin layer drying rate) is known. The size of the dryer needed to reach the same degree of drying operating in the parallel mode is much greater than that of counterflow type, when the drying medium is air or flue gases. The reason for the poorer drying in parallel flow is mainly the unfavorable distribution of the evaporation temperature. In steam drying, the difference in the size is not so great, since the evaporation takes place approximately at constant temperature.  相似文献

Existing measurement techniques have prevented extensive investigations of the effect of dryer fabric structure on contact drying of paper. Using a novel optical measurement method, the moisture content (MC) of paper can be accurately quantified at high spatial and temporal resolution while it is sandwiched between the heater surface and the dryer fabric. To study the paper drying process, an experimental setup is designed to simulate realistic conditions of a typical paper dryer while providing optical access for the measurement system. Ten commercially available fabrics manufactured by weaving synthetic filaments are used in the investigations. The 3D structure of the fabrics is characterized using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The fabrics are used in the experiments to investigate the effects of the filament structure and paper/fabric contact on the drying process. It is shown the fabric structure affects the drying rate and the drying time. Fabrics that have a relatively large drying rate at high paper MC may have a relatively small drying rate at low levels of MC. The contact area and 3D arrangement of the filaments have the greatest impact on the drying process. Adjacent filaments result in larger blocked regions of the paper surface, which reduces the drying rate. The spatial distribution of moisture as a function of time reveals that frequent rewetted spots appear during the drying. These rewetting spots are caused by reabsorption of water condensed on the fabric filaments.  相似文献

An industrial batch-type, tray air dryer constructed for drying of several fruits, was investigated. Momentum, heat and mass transfer regarding both gaseous and solid phases was simulated using computational fluid dynamics. A mathematical model of the dryer for predicting the turbulent, three-dimensional transfer phenomena inside the industrial batch dryer equipment was developed and analyzed. The model consists of the full set of partial differential equations that describe the conservation of mass, momentum and heat inside the dryer. The standard k-ε model was used to describe turbulence in addition to the governing conservation equations. The simulated profiles of flow field, temperature and humidity of the air phase revealed a lack of spatial homogeneity of air conditions above the product. The situation was found to greatly influence the distribution of material moisture content of the dried product for the various stages of drying. The investigation was carried out for the representative case of sultana raisins.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

An investigation of the thermal drying of lignite has been carried out, by using an indirect heat pilot rotary drum. The process aims at the production of dry lignite and clean steam as part of a gasification procedure. Both flighted and bare drum modes have been employed. Temperature profiles along the dryer length, the amount of evaporation (moisture conversion) and the solids residence time distribution (RTD) were measured. A non-isothermal model was tested under three different regimes of solids flow. Model integration, by taking account of experimental amount of evaporation at dryer exit and temperature profiles along the dryer length, has been utilized in the validation of drying kinetics and heat transfer correlations. Model predictions compare satisfactorily with the operating data of an indirect heat industrial lignite dryer. Overall heat transfer coefficients of the pilot rotary dryer were found to agree well with those reported for direct heat dryers.  相似文献

A new method for the nondestructive measurement of moisture content (MC) distribution in timber during drying was developed using X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning and image processing techniques. The deformed cross section in the CT images due to shrinkage was corrected with the image registration, and the shrinkage was measured by digital image correlation analysis. The pixel-wise MC distributions during drying were measured and visualized successfully. The total timber MC estimated from the MC values of each pixel were strongly correlated with those measured by calculation without geometrical transformation of CT images. The coefficient of determination (R 2) and the standard error of prediction (SEP) were 0.99 and 0.18%, respectively, within the MC range of 19.2–47.3%. In addition, the measured shrinkage distribution during drying was in accordance with the diamonding deformation observed. The results suggest that CT scanning combined with image processing techniques is an effective tool for nondestructive assessment of MC distribution during drying.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The drying of grain in dryers of a crossflow moving bed type was theoretically and experimentally studied. Two different dryer configurations were analyzed, a dryer with central air distribution and another with multiple air duels. Experimental information was obtained in pilot-size dryers. A mathematical model to simulate the process was developed. Hindered drying was accounted for by using the concept of relative drying rate. An adjustable factor, specific to the dryers, was used to account for the uncertainties of the contact area and the transfer coefficients encountered in the literature. Agreement between experimental results and simulations was fairly good. Simulations showed that distance between inlet air and outlet devices, air to solid flow ratio and dryer height to cross section ratio have great influence on the process. The mathematical model may be a useful tool for process exploration and optimization of this type of dryers.  相似文献

A mathematical model of temperature and wheat moisture content distribution inside a triangular spouted bed dryer was developed. The model is based on analysis of heat and mass transfer inside the dryer. In addition to that, an empirical bulk density model has been developed for wheat and included in the drying simulation. A laboratory-scale triangular spouted bed (TSB) dryer was used to dry wheat grain to validate the model. The dryer was divided into three sections, namely spouting, downcomer, and fountain. A series of drying runs were conducted to record moisture and temperature profile. There were two distinct regions observed during wheat drying. A constant rate period was observed during the initial drying stage and the falling rate period took place at the later drying stage. Initial moisture content and operating drying temperature governed the timing of transition from constant rate period to falling rate period. The model can be used to accurately predict the moisture content of wheat during drying. The temperature prediction inside the TSB dryer was less accurate, especially at high temperatures due to heat losses in the experimental dryer. Further studies are needed to improve the accuracy of this model, especially with regard to the temperature prediction.  相似文献
