Concentrations, and enantiomeric compositions of HCH, DDT and chlordane in 74 soils of the Pearl River Delta, South China were investigated. The mean concentrations of HCHs and DDTs descended in the order: crop soils>paddy soils>natural soils. The concentrations (ng/g dw) of p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD and o,p'-DDT in crop soils were 0.14-231, 0.07-315, 0.5. An EF value >0.5 generally suggested a preferential degradation of the (-) enantiomers of both TC and CC. The racemic alpha-HCH observed in the soils with higher HCH concentrations indicated that the transformation from gamma-HCH (e.g. lindane) to alpha-HCH may be an important process in the soils. The isomer ratios of p,p'-DDT/(DDE+DDD), o,p'-DDT/p,p'-DDT and enantiomeric compositions of o,p'-DDT suggested that both illegal use of technical DDT and the DDT impurity in dicofol may be responsible for the freshly DDT input in the region. The sources of DDTs were drawn by principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR). The relative contributions of dicofol-type DDT, residues, and fresh technical DDT were estimated to be 55%, 21% and 17%, respectively. In addition, CC was found to degraded faster than TC in soils from the Pearl River Delta. The study demonstrated that the combination of isomer ratios and enantiomeric composition analysis may provide critical information on the potential sources and fate of organochlorine pesticides in soil.  相似文献

Sediments from the Mersey Estuary were analysed for polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Total PAH concentrations ranged from 626 to 3766 microg/kg and total PCB concentrations ranged from 36 to 1409 microg/kg. These concentrations are intermediate in comparison to other U.K estuaries with similar histories of industrialisation and urbanisation. The distribution of individual PAHs were consistent throughout the Mersey Estuary, this together with molecular indices suggests mainly pyrolitic inputs, augmented by a variety of industrial petrogenic sources. Comparison of tri-to-hepta PCB congeners revealed multiple sources and inputs throughout the estuary. A sediment core collected in close proximity to Garston Docks revealed the take-off, peak pollutant input and recent decline of PCB pollution. However, a second depth profile of sediments at Ellesmere Port showed little change in total or individual PCB concentrations due to extensive sediment reworking and mixing.  相似文献

Despite the worldwide ban on use of persistent organochlorine pesticides, their usage continued until recently in India, for vector-borne disease eradication programs and agricultural purposes. The concentrations of organochlorine contaminants, DDT and HCH, have been determined in human breast milk from Dibrugarh and Nagaon districts of Assam state, North-East India. The results demonstrated that the mean levels of total DDT were 3210 ng/g lipid wt. and 2870 ng/g lipid wt. and total HCH were 2720 ng/g lipid wt. and 2330 ng/g lipid wt. in Nagaon and Dibrugarh respectively. There was no significant difference in the levels of investigated pollutants between the two districts. Significant differences in ADI (Average daily intake) for total DDT were found between the two districts. In addition, a positive correlation was observed between OCP levels in breast milk and age of mothers. Based on OCP levels in human breast milk, the ADI by the infants has been estimated. It has been found that high daily intake of DDTs and HCHs by the infants exceeded the TDI (Tolerable daily intake) which implied that infants of the region are potentially at high risk by these contaminants.  相似文献

Persistent organic pollutants have been associated with disease susceptibility and decreased immunity in marine mammals. Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), chlordanes (CHLDs), and hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs) were evaluated in terms of stage of development and likely exposure routes (in utero, suckling, fasting) in the blubber of 202 stranded and wild-caught, primarily young of the year (n = 177), harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in the central California coast. This is the first report of HCH concentrations in the blubber of California seals. Lipid normalized concentrations ranged from 200 to 330,000 ng/g for sum PCBs, 320-1,500,000 ng/g for sum DDTs, 23-63,000 ng/g for sum PBDEs, 29-29,000 ng/g for sum CHLDs, and 2-780 ng/g for sum HCHs. The highest concentrations were observed in harbor seal pups that suckled in the wild and then lost mass during the post-weaning fast. Among the pups sampled in the wild and those released from rehabilitation, there were no differences in mass, blubber depth, or percent lipid although contaminant concentrations were significantly higher in the pups which nursed in the wild. When geographic differences were evaluated in a subset of newborn animals collected near their birth locations, the ratio of sum DDTs to sum PCBs was significantly greater in samples from an area with agricultural inputs (Monterey), than one with industrial inputs (San Francisco Bay). A principal components analysis distinguished between seals from San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay based on specific PCB and PBDE congeners and DDT metabolites. These data illustrate the important influence of life stage, nutritional status, and location on blubber contaminant levels, and thus the need to consider these factors when interpreting single sample measurements in marine mammals.  相似文献

The accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and DDTs were investigated in gammarids captured at three sites along the middle River Po; the first was located upstream and the other two were at increasing distances downstream of the confluence of a polluted tributary, the River Lambro. Using a GC-MS technique, the levels of PCBs, PAHs and DDTs were determined separately in large and small gammarids as well as in the fine fraction of sediment samples collected along the sites of capture. Results confirm the River Lambro as a source of these chemicals to the River Po, and show that bioaccumulation differences exist between small and large individuals, the former being more contaminated particularly by PCBs and DDTs. This is likely the result of several interacting factors such as contaminant bioavailability, gammarid-size effects on kinetic parameters and feeding selectivity. The bioaccumulation patterns of PCBs and DDTs, and their higher biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAF), are consistent with chemical properties and suggest a dietary disequilibrium found only 10 km downstream from the tributary, and in smaller amphipods. Present results show that gammarids may represent an additional source of contaminants, particularly of chlorinated compounds, to the many organisms feeding on them, with a higher risk for those which prey selectively on smaller gammarids.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of total nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen in the sediments, pore water and overlying water of Xiangxi Bay in China Three‐Gorge Reservoir were investigated. In surveys, the sampling was undertaken from six sites of Xiangxi Bay on three dates: 29 March 2009, 28 March 2010 and 17 August 2010. Mean values of total nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen contents in the sediments and pore water of Xiangxi Bay all increased with time, especially in summer. There were intimate relationships between internal nitrogen loading and water ecosystem. Correlation coefficients R were 0.7408 (between total nitrogen in pore water and total nitrogen in sediments) and 0.7483 (between total nitrogen in sediments and chlorophyll‐a in surface water), respectively. Total nitrogen concentration differences between pore water and overlying water were all positive and had good correlation with chlorophyll‐a concentration of Xiangxi Bay. The release of nitrogen in sediments had an important impact on phytoplankton growth in Xiangxi Bay.  相似文献

Monitoring the water quality of recreational beaches is only one step toward understanding microbial contamination -- the primary cause of beach closings. The surf zone sediment reservoir is typically overlooked and may also be important. This study involved monitoring the fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) levels in water and sediment at three ocean beaches (two exposed and one enclosed) during a storm event, conducting laboratory microcosm experiments with sediment from these beaches, and surveying sediment FIB levels at 13 beaches (some exposed and some enclosed). Peaks in Escherichia coli and enterococci concentrations in water and sediment coincided with storm activity at the two exposed beaches, while levels of both FIB were consistently high and irregular at the enclosed beach. Results from microcosm experiments showing similar, dramatic growth of FIB in both overlying water and sediment from all beaches, as well as results from the beach survey, support the hypothesis that the quiescent environment rather than sediment characteristics can explain the elevated sediment FIB levels observed at enclosed beaches. This work has implications for the predictive value of FIB measurements, and points to the importance of the sediment reservoir.  相似文献

Ten polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were simultaneously measured in 17 surface water samples and 11 sediments of four water bodies, and 3 soils near the water-body bank in Hangzhou, China in December 2002. It was observed that the sum of PAHs concentrations ranged from 0.989 to 9.663 microg/L in surface waters, from 132.7 to 7343 ng/g dry weight in sediments, and from 59.71 to 615.8 ng/g dry weight in soils. The composition pattern of PAHs by ring size in water, sediment and soil were surveyed. Three-ring PAHs were dominated in surface waters and soils, meanwhile sediments were mostly dominated by four-ring PAHs. Furthermore, PAHs apparent distribution coefficients (K(d)) and solid f(oc)-normalized K(d) (e.g. K(oc)= K(d) / f(oc)) were calculated. The relationship between logK(oc) and logK(ow) of PAHs for field data on sediments and predicted values were compared. The sources of PAHs in different water bodies were evaluated by comparison of K (oc) values in sediments of the river downstream with that in soils. Hangzhou section of the Great Canal was heavily polluted by PAHs released from industrial wastewater in the past and now PAHs in sediment may serve as sources of PAHs in surface water. PAHs in Qiantang River were contributed from soil runoff. Municipal road runoff was mostly contributed to West Lake PAHs.  相似文献

Heavy metal pollution status in surface sediments of the coastal Bohai Bay   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20

Bohai Bay, the second largest bay of Bohai Sea, largely due to the huge amount of pollutants discharged into it annually and its geohydrologic condition, is considered to be one of the most polluted marine areas in China. To slow down, halt and finally reverse the environmental deterioration of Bohai Sea, some researchers have proposed to connect it with Jiaozhou Bay in the western coast of Southern Yellow Sea by digging an interbasin canal through Shandong Peninsula. In order to assess the heavy metal pollution and provide background information for such a large geoengineering scheme, surface sediments from 42 stations covering both riverine and marine regions of the northwestern coast of Bohai Bay were analyzed for heavy metal content and fractionation (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn). Three empirically derived sediment quality guidelines were used to assess the pollution extent of these metals. The studied metals had low mobility except for Cd at all stations and Zn at some riverine stations. Although a high mobility of Cd was observed, it could hardly cause a bad effect on the environment owing to its low total concentrations. Anthropogenic influence on the accumulation of studied heavy metals in sediments of Bohai Bay was obvious, but their contents were relatively lower to date comparing with some other marine coastal areas that receive important anthropogenic inputs. Taking as a whole, surface sediments of northwestern Bohai Bay had a 21% probability of toxicity based on the mean effects range-median quotient.  相似文献

Under stagnant conditions, the mass transport of a soluble substrate from a lake's water column to the sediment/water interface is limited by molecular diffusion. Stagnant conditions coupled with a continuing sediment biological demand create a substrate depletion zone above the sediment/water interface. The frequency at which the substrate depletion zone is destroyed by internal seiches and other intermittent flow phenomena influences the time-averaged substrate concentration at the sediment/water interface. A more frequent mixing results in a greater time-averaged interface concentration and consequently affects the amount of microbial biomass that can be supported in the lake sediments and the flux of the substrate into the sediment. A one-dimensional, two-substrate model is used to examine the impact of mixing frequency on the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in lake sediments. In the model, sulfate is supplied from the water column, while acetate is generated within the sediments. Mass transport to and within the sediments is by molecular diffusion except for instantaneous mixing events. Between mixing events, sulfate concentration gradients form above the sediment/water interface in the diffusive boundary layer. Sulfate depletion zones can be centimeters thick. When typical biological rate and diffusion coefficients for sulfate and acetate are used as inputs, the model indicates that a more frequent water-column mixing results in greater SRB concentrations. For an assumed bulk water-column sulfate concentration of 4.8 mg x l(-1), the sediment SRB concentrations for the modeled hourly, 6-hourly, daily, and weekly mixing frequencies were 175, 136, 91, and 30 mg x m(-2), respectively. The model also predicts higher time-averaged sulfate flux rates at more frequent water-column mixing. The time-averaged sulfate flux rates for the hourly, 6-hourly, daily, and weekly mixing frequencies were 1.26, 1.13, 0.78, and 0.30 mg x m(-2)h(-1), respectively. Thus, mixing frequency can significantly impact microbial activity in lake sediments.  相似文献

Hong Kong and South China are the most developed regions within China. The industrialization in these areas has resulted in severe environmental problems. Sediment and biotic samples including tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), crucian carp (Carassius auratus) and mandarin fish/fresh water grouper (Siniperca chuatsi) were collected from different fishponds in the Pearl River Delta (Tanzhou, Sanjiao, Guangzhou, Shipai, Changan and Mai Po) for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine (OC) pesticides. Mandarin fish, which belongs to the highest trophic level, accumulated the highest concentrations of PAHs and DDTs among all fish species. The levels of DDTs in fish samples ranged from 1.5 to 62ng g-1 (wet wt.), with more than 30% of the fish samples exceeding the limit of 14.4ng g-1 (wet wt.) for human consumption recommended by US EPA (2000). Levels of PAHs in fish samples ranged from 1.91 to 224.03ng g-1 (wet wt.), but the potency-weighted total concentrations of PAHs in all muscle tissues were below the guideline value of 0.67ng g-1 (wet wt.) for human consumption set by US EPA (2000). The guideline value calculated was based on a tissue consumption rate of 142.2g day-1 (4-5 meals per week), which is a more protective rate for populations with a high consumption of fish, like Chinese and Asians. The effect of lipid content in PAHs and DDTs accumulation in fish tissue was not significant in general.  相似文献

We applied cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) with multivariate linear regression (MLR) to apportion sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China, based on the measured PAH concentrations of 32 samples collected at eight sites in four seasons in 2006. The results indicate that petrogenic and pyrogenic sources are the important sources of PAHs. Further analysis shows that the contributions of coal combustion, traffic-related pollution and spills of oil products (petrogenic) are 40%, 36% and 24% using PCA/MLR, respectively. Pyrogenic sources (coal combustion and traffic related pollution) contribute 76% of anthropogenic PAHs to sediments, which indicates that energy consumption is a predominant factor of PAH pollution in Shanghai. Rainfall, the monsoon and temperature play important roles in the distinct seasonal variation of PAH pollution, such that the contamination level of PAHs in spring is significantly higher than in the other seasons.

Brief

We apportion PAHs in surface sediments of the Huangpu River and show that coal combustion, traffic-related pollution, and petroleum spillage are the major sources.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been determined in recent [0–1(2), 1(2)–5 and 5–10 cm deep layers] sediments from different sites of the southern Baltic Sea, including the Szczecin Lagoon, collected from May 1996 to October 1999, i.e. before and after the great flood in Poland of July/August 1997. The PCB distribution has been correlated with location and hydrological conditions as well as with organic carbon, algal pigments and their derivatives in the sediments. The sum of PCB (seven congeners) was equal to 1–149 ng/g dry wt., on average this was rather low (up to 40 ng/g). There was a decreasing trend in PCBs concentrations in the bottom sediments of the southern Baltic in 1996 but considerable amounts were still accumulated there. The flood of 1997 caused a distinct increase of PCB concentration level in the sediments, which again showed a decreasing trend in the next few years. This illustrates that at present the main source of PCBs for the southern Baltic are not a direct consequence of human activity, but from floods and heavy rains washing these compounds from land to the sea. Algae and algal detritus play an important role in the transport and distribution of PCBs in the southern Baltic. High correlation of PCBs with chlorophyll a derivatives — products of zooplankton grazing — indicates that PCBs are ingested by zooplankton with phytoplankton and then exuded with fecal pellets. PCBs bound to algal detritus or to fecal pellets in the water column are transferred to sediments, there they may be trapped either in a bonded and unchanged form or resuspended, remobilized and/or dechlorinated, depending on their properties and environmental conditions.  相似文献

Assignment of ecological impacts of contamination to specific classes of contaminants is a prerequisite for risk assessment and remediation. In this study, the combination of polarity-based fractionation, two-hybrid yeast bioassay, and chemical analysis were used to evaluate and identify estrogen receptor agonists (ER-agonists) in sediments from Wenyu River, Beijing, China. By bioassay, organic raw sediment extracts could induce significant estrogenicity and the bioassay-derived 17β-estradiol equivalents (EEQs) of raw extracts (EEQraws) ranged from 0.8 to 19.8 ng/g dry weight. By polarity-based fractionation, the raw extracts were separated into three fractions, i.e. non-polar, moderately polar, and polar fractions, which were subjected to bioassay and chemical analysis. The highest estrogenicity was observed in the polar fraction, which accounted for more than 78% of the total. The medium polar fraction contains PAHs and OCPs, and the estrogenic activities in this fraction contributed 3%-12% of the total in raw extract. An estrogenic activity of non-polarity fraction was negligible in compare to other two fractions. By chemical analysis and toxic equivalent calculation, major part of the estrogenicity in polar fraction could be attributed to six natural/synthetic estrogens (16%-63%), i.e. 17β-estradiol, estrone, estriol, 17α-ethynylestradiol, diethylstilbestrol, and β-estradiol-17-valerate, and to nonylphenols (26%-55%). The proposed approach has been successfully used for characterization of ER-agonists in this case study.  相似文献

Elevated levels of chromium, partly attributable to historical disposal of chromite ore processing residue, are present in sediment along the eastern shore of the lower Hackensack River near the confluence with Newark Bay. Due to anaerobic conditions in the sediment, the chromium is in the form of Cr(III), which poses no unacceptable risks to human health or to the river ecology. However, as water quality conditions have improved since the 1970s, aerobic conditions have become increasingly prevalent in the overlying water column. If these conditions result in oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI), either under quiescent conditions or during severe weather or anthropogenic scouring events, the potential for adverse ecological effects due to biological exposures to Cr(VI) is possible, though the reaction kinetics associated with oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) are unfavorable. To investigate the stability of Cr(III) in Hackensack River sediments exposed to oxic conditions, sediment suspension and oxidation experiments and intertidal sediment exposure experiments that exposed the sediments to oxic conditions were conducted. Results revealed no detectable concentrations of Cr(VI), and thus no measurable potential for total chromium oxidation to Cr(VI). Furthermore, total chromium released from sediment to elutriate water in the oxidation and suspension experiments ranged from below detection (<0.01 mg/L) to 0.18 mg/L, below the freshwater National Recommended Water Quality Criteria (NRWQC) of 0.57 mg/L for Cr(III). These results support conclusions of a stable, in situ geochemical environment in sediments in the lower Hackensack River with respect to chromium. Results showed that chemicals other than Cr(VI), including copper, lead, mercury, zinc, and PCBs, were released at levels that may pose a potential for adverse ecological effects.  相似文献

Source apportionment of PAHs in dated sediments from the Black River,Ohio   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Black River, OH, is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from coke ovens of a US Steel Corp. Plant. Closing of a coking plant in 1983 and environmental dredging of the sediments during 1989 and 1990 has reduced the PAH levels significantly. This study quantifies the decrease, and consider source apportionment of PAHs in Black River sediments using chemical mass balance modeling. Five vibra cores collected in 1998 and dated using 210Pb and 137Cs, were analyzed for 18 PAHs. The cores had total PAH concentrations between 250 and 0.10 ppm. PAH maxima occur in 1949, 1969, in accordance with regional historical inputs (core BR4), and in 1991 due to remediation (BR6). Coke oven emissions (CO), highway dust (HWY), and wood burning (WB) are likely sources. The CO source (6-92% of total PAHs) is maximal in 1954, and again in 1992-1994 due to the exposure and redistribution of older contaminated sediments during dredging, and decreases thereafter. There is minimal CO content in 1985 (BR4), 2 yr after closure of the coking plant. The HWY contribution (2-86%) is high during 1969-1988, and increases again after 1993. The WB source is less than 23%, and exhibits a minimum (2%) around 1979 (BR4). There is evidence of aerobic biodegradation or photolysis in the sediment of phenanthrene (PhA) at PhA concentrations >500 ppb.  相似文献

The discovery of significantly elevated levels of arsenic (As) in the sediments of Spy Pond motivated us to identify the principal As source and to investigate the extent of contamination within the pond. Spy Pond is located in Arlington (MA, USA), a residential and commercial town with no known history of As use by industry or agriculture. Spy Pond is a kettle-hole pond composed of two basins (north and south) separated by a shallow sill. Sediment cores from the two basins were analyzed for As content by instrumental neutron activation analysis and dated by measuring 210Pb activity. The As concentration profiles for the north and south basins had maxima that dated to approximately 1962 and approximately 1956, respectively. These dates are consistent with records of arsenical herbicide use, which indicate that between 1960-1968 sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) and arsenic oxide (As2O3) were applied to the pond to control aquatic macrophytes. Estimates of As loadings to the two basins-- approximately 410 kg ( approximately 32 kg ha(-1)) to the north and approximately 5800 kg ( approximately 580 kg ha(-1)) to the south--are consistent with the range of application rates reported for other lakes treated with arsenical herbicides. To determine the extent of As contamination in the pond, 68 surface sediment samples were analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. Arsenic levels ranged from 1 to 2600 ppm in the north basin (n = 49) and from 120 to 1100 ppm in the south basin (n = 19). Background sediment-As levels for the area are 10-40 ppm. The highest concentrations of As in the sediments of Spy Pond are comparable to levels measured in lakes contaminated with chemical manufacturing and mining wastes. These results are discussed with respect to As remobilization and sediment treatment measures planned for the pond.  相似文献

The occurrence and the removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) during the conventional activated sludge treatment process were investigated in the wastewater treatment plant of the city of Thessaloniki, northern Greece. POPs of interest were seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 19 organochlorine pesticides. Target compounds were determined at six different points across the treatment system. Most abundant compounds in raw wastewater at all treatment stages were PCB-52, PCB-110, PCB-180 and Heptachlor-exo-epoxide. Quintozene occurred frequently but in relatively low concentrations. Hexachlorocyclohexanes, DDT and its metabolites (DDE, DDD) and Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endrin, Isodrin ("Drins") were found at medium or low frequencies and in concentrations close to their detection limits. Removal percentages throughout the whole treatment process ranged from 65% to 91% for individual POP species. Significant linear relationship was observed between removal efficiency and log Kow for PCBs suggesting that compounds with a strong hydrophobic character are principally removed through sorption to sludge particles and transfer to the sludge processing systems. Total PCBs' concentrations in sewage sludge ranged between 185 and 765 ng g(-1) dw being below the EU limit for use of sludge in agriculture.  相似文献

Some of the recently derived European Directives, such as the Water Framework and Marine Strategy, have, as ultimate aims, to achieve concentrations of hazardous substances in the marine environment near background values. Hence, the determination of natural background levels, in marine sediments, is highly relevant. The present study proposes the use of the maximum likelihood mixture estimation (MLME) to determine regional background levels and upper threshold of metal concentration, with the Basque Country as a case study (with a data set of 575 samples, from estuarine and littoral areas, including both intertidal and subtidal sediments). The heuristic procedure is applied with unimodal data distributions (Cd, Cr, Fe and Ni) and the mixture density estimations, based upon maximum likelihood, are carried out with polypopulational data distributions (As, Cu, Mn, Hg, Pb and Zn). The upper limits of the distribution are proposed, as the limits between 'High Status' and 'Good Status' (according to the Water Framework Directive terminology). The regional upper limits were 0.45 microg g(-1) for Cd, 71 microg g(-1) for Cr, 53,542 microg g(-1) for Fe, 57 microg g(-1) for Ni, 24 microg g(-1) for As, 64 microg g(-1) for Cu, 447 microg g(-1) for Mn, 0.27 microg g(-1) for Hg, 66 microg g(-1) for Pb, and 248 microg g(-1) for Zn. The results from this study can assist further in the determination of sediment reference conditions, to assess chemical status, within the above-mentioned directives; likewise, it will be studied as a useful methodology in determining regional metal backgrounds in other European countries.  相似文献

PAH concentration and distribution has been examined in surface sediments samples from the Kara Sea, Russia. The study includes 13 samples from the South-eastern Kara Sea shelf, one sample from the south-western part of the sea, 4 samples from the Baydaratskaya Bay, 5 samples from the Gulf of Ob and 4 samples from the Yenisei Bay, collected in August-September 1993-1994. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to identify common patterns and possible sources of PAHs. The total PAH concentration (sum of two- to six-ring aromatic hydrocarbons) in the Kara Sea sediments was generally lower than in the Barents Sea sediments and comparable to the levels in the Pechora and White seas. Two- and three-ring aromatic hydrocarbons predominated in Kara Sea sediments, which indicate a relatively stronger petrogenic origin than that in the adjacent seas. The highest total PAH concentrations within the Kara Sea were found in sediments from the Yenisei Bay and in the South-western part of the Kara Sea in the Eastern Novaya Zemlya Trough. The PAHs of the Yenisei Bay sediments were dominated by perylene and PAHs of petrogenic origin, but had also a strong indication of PAHs of pyrogenic origin. The dominating PAH group in the South-western part of the Kara Sea were four- to six-ring aromatic hydrocarbons, indicating pyrogenic origin. Perylene levels were high in all the Kara Sea samples, and highest levels were found in areas of strong terrigenous influence. The most probable source is decaying peat products being transported to the Kara Sea by both large and small rivers.  相似文献
