In this paper we study the role of the gradation on the effective properties of heterogeneous multilayered thermoviscoplastic materials with discontinuous properties under simple shearing. Starting from the bimetallic multilayered material, we produce a new multicomponent material with discontinuous gradation having improved effective properties. We also present the effective properties of the continuously graded material functionally graded material (FGM). The main results are illustrated with some numerical examples.  相似文献

An exact elasticity solution is presented for the free and forced vibration of functionally graded cylindrical shells. The functionally graded shells have simply supported edges and arbitrary material gradation in the radial direction. The three-dimensional linear elastodynamics equations, simplified to the case of generalized plane strain deformation in the axial direction, are solved using suitable displacement functions that identically satisfy the boundary conditions. The resulting system of coupled ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients are solved analytically using the power series method. The analytical solution is applicable to shallow as well as deep shells of arbitrary thickness. The formulation assumes that the shell is made of a cylindrically orthotropic material but it is equally applicable to the special case of isotropic materials. Results are presented for two-constituent isotropic and fiber-reinforced composite materials. The homogenized elastic stiffnesses of isotropic materials are estimated using the self-consistent scheme. In the case of fiber-reinforced materials, the effective properties are obtained using either the Mori–Tanaka or asymptotic expansion homogenization (AEH) methods. The fiber-reinforced composite material studied in the present work consists of silicon-carbide fibers embedded in titanium matrix with the fiber volume fraction and fiber orientation graded in the radial direction. The natural frequencies, mode shapes, displacements and stresses are presented for different material gradations and shell geometries.  相似文献

A semi-analytical method is proposed to investigate the non-destructive detection of a circular cavity buried in a functionally graded material layer bonded to homogeneous materials, and the multiple scattering effect of shear waves is described accurately. The image method is used to satisfy the traction free boundary condition at the edge of the functionally graded material layer. The analytical solutions of wave fields are expressed by employing wave function expansion method, and the expanded mode coefficients are determined by satisfying the boundary conditions at the edge and around the cavity. The analytical and numerical solutions of dynamic stress concentration factors around the cavity are presented. The effects of the position of the cavity in the material layer, the incident wave number, and the properties of the two phases of materials on the dynamic stress concentration factors are analyzed. Analyses show that when the buried depth of the cavity and the thickness of the layer are relatively small, the properties of the two phases of materials have great effect on the distribution of dynamic stress around the cavity. In the region of higher frequency, the effects of the position of the cavity and the properties of the two phases of materials on the maximum dynamic stress are greater.  相似文献

In this paper, a hybrid mesh-free method based on generalized finite difference (GFD) and Newmark finite difference (NFD) methods is presented to calculate the velocity of elastic wave propagation in functionally graded materials (FGMs). The physical domain to be considered is a thick hollow cylinder made of functionally graded material in which mechanical properties are graded in the radial direction only. A power-law variation of the volume fractions of the two constituents is assumed for mechanical property variation. The cylinder is excited by shock loading to obtain the time history of the radial displacement. The velocity of elastic wave propagation in functionally graded cylinder is calculated from periodic behavior of the radial displacement in time domain. The effects of various grading patterns and various constitutive mechanical properties on the velocity of elastic wave propagation in functionally graded cylinders are studied in detail. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in simulating the wave propagation in FGMs.  相似文献

Dynamic buckling of functionally graded materials truncated conical shells subjected to normal impact loads is discussed in this paper. In the analysis, the material properties of functionally graded materials shells are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Geometrically nonlinear large deformation and the initial imperfections are taken into account. Galerkin procedure and Runge–Kutta integration scheme are used to solve nonlinear governing equations numerically. From the characteristics of dynamic response obtain critical loads of the shell according to B-R criterion. From the research results it can be found that gradient properties of the materials have significant effects on the critical buckling loads of FGM shells.  相似文献

Columns with non-uniform distribution of geometrical or material parameters i.e. functionally graded material distribution, varying cross-sectional area and flexural stiffness provide an economical solution to carry the desired higher compressive loads in engineering structures. In this paper, a low-dimensional mathematical model is presented, which is capable of computing the buckling loads of uniform and non-uniform functionally graded columns in the axial direction. The columns with spatial variation of flexural stiffness, due to material grading and/or non-uniform shape, are approximated by an equivalent column with piecewise constant geometrical and material properties. Such a formulation leads to certain transcendental eigenvalue problems where the matrix elements are transcendental functions. This model is further extended in analyzing some uniform and non-uniform elastically restrained or braced axially graded columns with equal or unequal spans. The mathematical modeling, closed-form transcendental functions and numerical solution technique are described and several examples of estimating buckling loads for various boundary configurations are presented. Some of the results are also validated against available solutions, representing the convergence, effectiveness, accuracy and versatility of the proposed modeling and numerical method. Formulation of such low-dimensional eigenvalue problems can also be extended for analyzing, designing and optimizing the static and dynamic behavior of structural components that are made of functionally graded materials.  相似文献

In this paper, a dynamic solution for the propagating viscoelastic waves in functionally graded material (FGM) plates subjected to stress-free conditions is presented in the context of the Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic theory. The FGM plate is composed of two orthotropic materials. The material properties are assumed to vary in the thickness direction according to a known variation law. The three obtained wave equations are divided into two groups, which control viscoelastic Lamb-like wave and viscoelastic SH wave, respectively. They are solved respectively by the Legendre orthogonal polynomial series approach. The validity of the method is confirmed through a comparison with the Lamb wave solution of a pure elastic FGM plate and a comparison with the SH wave solution of a viscoelastic homogeneous plate. The dispersion curves and attenuation curves for the graded and homogeneous viscoelastic plates are calculated to highlight their differences. The viscous effect on dispersion curves is shown. The influences of gradient variations are illustrated.  相似文献

The effective material properties of functionally graded materials are predicted using a modified Mori–Tanaka and a self-consistent method. The proposed micromechanics model accounts for both multi-phase heterogeneity and a number of layers. The influence of geometries and distinct elastic material properties of each constituent and voids on the effective elastic properties of FGM is investigated. Numerical examples of different functionally graded materials are presented. The predicted elastic properties obtained from the current model agree well with experimental results from the literature.  相似文献

A new multi-layered model is developed for the fracture analysis of a functionally graded interfacial zone with arbitrary material properties. It is assumed that the interfacial zone is divided into sub-layers with the material properties of each sub-layer varying in a power-law function. The model is used to study the crack problem in the functionally graded interfacial zone between two homogeneous half-planes under a dynamic anti-plane load. Using Fourier–Laplace transforms and the transfer matrix method, the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a Cauchy singular integral equation, which is solved numerically in the Laplace transform domain. Laplace numerical inversion transform is employed to obtain the stress intensity factors. The results show that the new model is general and effective for the crack problem of the functionally graded interfacial zone with arbitrary properties.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical method to investigate the multiple scattering of electro-elastic waves and dynamic stress around a subsurface cylindrical inclusion in a functionally graded piezoelectric material layer bonded to homogeneous piezoelectric materials. The analytical solutions of wave fields are expressed by employing wave function expansion method, and the expanded mode coefficients are determined by satisfying the boundary conditions around the inclusion. The image method is used to satisfy the mechanical and electrically short conditions at the free surface of the structure. Through the numerical solutions of dynamic stress concentration factors around the inclusion, it is found that when the cylindrical inclusion possesses higher rigidity and greater piezoelectric constant than the two phases of functionally graded materials, the dynamic stress around the inclusion increases greatly. When the distance between the surface of the structure and the inclusion is smaller, the effect of the properties of the inclusion becomes greater. When the cylindrical inclusion possesses lower rigidity and smaller piezoelectric constant than the two phases of functionally graded materials, the maximum dynamic stress shows little difference; however, the variation of the distribution of the dynamic stress around the inclusion is greater. The effect of the properties of the inclusion on the dynamic stress around the inclusion is greater than that on the electric field. The effects of wave frequency on the dynamic stress and electric field are also examined.  相似文献

This work investigates elastic-plastic crack growth in ceramic/metal functionally graded materials (FGMs). The study employs a phenomenological, cohesive zone model proposed by the authors and simulates crack growth by the gradual degradation of cohesive surfaces ahead of the crack front. The cohesive zone model uses six material-dependent parameters (the cohesive energy densities and the peak cohesive tractions of the ceramic and metal phases, respectively, and two cohesive gradation parameters) to describe the constitutive response of the material in the cohesive zone. A volume fraction based, elastic-plastic model (extension of the original Tamura-Tomota-Ozawa model) describes the elastic-plastic response of the bulk background material. The numerical analyses are performed using WARP3D, a fracture mechanics research finite element code, which incorporates solid elements with graded elastic and plastic properties and interface-cohesive elements coupled with the functionally graded cohesive zone model. Numerical values of volume fractions for the constituents specified at nodes of the finite element model set the spatial gradation of material properties with isoparametric interpolations inside interface elements and background solid elements to define pointwise material property values. The paper describes applications of the cohesive zone model and the computational scheme to analyze crack growth in a single-edge notch bend, SE(B), specimen made of a TiB/Ti FGM. Cohesive parameters are calibrated using the experimentally measured load versus average crack extension (across the thickness) responses of both Ti metal and TiB/Ti FGM SE(B) specimens. The numerical results show that with the calibrated cohesive gradation parameters for the TiB/Ti system, the load to cause crack extension in the FGM is much smaller than that for the metal. However, the crack initiation load for the TiB/Ti FGM with reduced cohesive gradation parameters (which may be achieved under different manufacturing conditions) could compare to that for the metal. Crack growth responses vary strongly with values of the exponent describing the volume fraction profile for the metal. The investigation also shows significant crack tunneling in the Ti metal SE(B) specimen. For the TiB/Ti FGM system, however, crack tunneling is pronounced only for a metal-rich specimen with relatively smaller cohesive gradation parameter for the metal.  相似文献

Wave propagation in solids of functionally graded materials is difficult to analyze due to the resulting differential equations of variable coefficients associated with the spatial variation of the material properties. In this study, the homotopy analysis method is applied to obtain the solution of surface acoustic waves in a plate of functionally graded material. The variation of material properties as a polynomial of the thickness coordinate is studied along with the convergence of the solution. It is found that the homotopy analysis method is effective in solving wave propagation problems arising from functionally graded materials with differential equations of variable coefficients in particular.  相似文献

In the present paper, analytical and numerical elastodynamic solutions are developed for spherically symmetric problems of functionally graded thick-walled spheres subjected to arbitrary dynamic and shock loads. Both transient dynamic response and elastic wave propagation characteristics are studied in the mentioned nonhomogeneous structures. Variations of the material properties across the thickness are described according to both polynomial and power law functions. The numerical consistent transfinite element formulation is presented for both functions whereas the exact solution is presented for the power law function. The functionally graded material sphere is not divided into isotropic sub-spheres. An approach associated with dividing the dynamic radial displacement expression into quasi-static and dynamic parts and expansion of the transient wave functions in terms of a series of eigenfunctions is employed to propose the exact solution. Results are obtained for various exponents of the functions of the material properties distributions, various radius ratios, and variety of dynamic and shock loads.  相似文献

This paper addresses asymptotic full crack-tip fields for an anti-plane (Mode-III) stationary crack in an anisotropic functionally graded material. A monoclinic material that has a material symmetry plane is considered. The complex variable approach and the asymptotic analysis are used to solve a perturbed Laplace equation resulting from material anisotropy and gradation. The out-of-plane displacement and stress solutions are provided for a crack in exponentially and linearly graded anisotropic materials by considering material gradation either parallel or perpendicular to the crack. The characteristics of the asymptotic solutions in an anisotropic functionally graded material are compared with those for anisotropic homogeneous and isotropic graded materials. Finally, engineering significance of the present work is discussed.  相似文献

As a first endeavor, the thermal buckling and postbuckling analysis of functionally graded (FG) annular plates with material properties graded in the radial direction is presented. The formulation is derived based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the geometrical nonlinearity is modeled using Green’s strain in conjunction with von Karman’s assumptions. The material properties are temperature-dependent and graded according to the power law distribution. It is assumed that the temperature varies along the radial direction. Using the virtual work principle, the pre-buckling and postbuckling equilibrium equations and the related boundary conditions are derived. Differential quadrature method (DQM) as an efficient numerical technique is adopted to solve the governing equations. The presented formulation and the method of solution are validated by performing convergence and comparison studies with available results in the literature. Finally, the effects of volume fraction index, geometrical parameters, mechanical/thermal properties of the constituent materials and boundary conditions on the thermal buckling and postbuckling behavior of the radially graded annular plate are evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

In this paper a thick hollow cylinder with finite length made of two-dimensional functionally graded material (2D-FGM) and subjected to impact internal pressure is considered. The axisymmetric conditions are assumed for the 2D-FG cylinder. The finite element method with graded material properties within each element is used to model the structure, and the Newmark direct integration method is implemented to solve the time dependent equations. The time histories of displacements, stresses and 2D wave propagation are investigated for various values of volume fraction exponents. Also the effects of mechanical properties distribution in radial and axial direction on the time responses of the FG cylinder as well as the stress distribution are studied and compared with a cylinder made of 1D-FGM. The achieved results show that using 2D-FGM leads to a more flexible design. To verify the presented method and data, the results are compared to published data.  相似文献
