Discusses virtual versus physical process-migration strategies in modeling mobile-computing networks. Both VPM and PPM play useful and effective roles in the modeling and simulation of real-world, mobile-computing networks. While PPM is a more accurate model of reality, by its very nature, VPM helps realize the modeling of networks with large numbers of mobile entities on testbeds with a modest number of processors, although at greatly reduced performance. Utamaphethai and Ghosh [1998] reported a TVHS simulation with 45,000 entities representing autonomous vehicles on a network of 60+ SUN Sparc 10 workstations. In contrast, a PPM implementation would be difficult to realize due to the large number of processors required and it would be unacceptably slow due to the large numbers of connections and disconnections. PPM is unquestionably superior when the computational loads associated with the mobile entities are high. However, its performance suffers relative to VPM where the system demands intense data exchange between the mobile and stationary units. This paper describes robosoccer, the latest experiment in robotics, and one that is growing in popularity on college campuses around the world. In robosoccer, two teams of boxy, wheeled robots face off against each other. A whistle blows and they spring into action, jostling for possession of a brightly colored golfball on a playing field the size ofa Ping-Pong table. Each team struggles to push the ball into the other team's goal located at the opposite end of the table. Wireless controls offer attractive features including flexibility, self-organization, and dynamic networking, especially in mobile control scenarios. At the same time, wireless controls pose new design challenges because network and control performance affect each other. We focus our study on a wireless, mobile, multihop, robot-control scenario and compare the applicability of standard routing protocols and two network-aware control methods in realistic simulations. The scenario is demanding ? with high mobility causing link breaks ? and stresses the routing and control algorithms. The system is modeled and evaluated on a platform for integrated control and communication co-simulator. 4G wireless networks make it increasingly difficult to develop and test application software for mobile terminals in comparison with 3G or earlier generations. These 4G networks incorporate wireless LAN technologies, and mobile terminals can access the services provided by LANs as well as global network services. Therefore, software running on mobile terminals may depend on not only its application logic but also on services within the LANs to which the terminals are connected. To construct correct software to run in mobile terminals for 4G wireless networks and wireless LANs, it must be tested in all the networks to which the terminal could be moved and be connected. This article presents a new approach, called flying emulator, to testing software designed to run on mobile terminals. Like existing approaches, the approach provides software-based emulators of its mobile terminals for software designed to run the terminals. It is unique because it constructs emulators as mobile agents that can travel between computers. These emulators can carry the target software to the networks to which the terminals are connected and allow it to access services provided by the networks in the same way as if it was moved with and executed on the terminals connected to the networks. Multimedia is opening up a vast new frontier for software companies, thanks to the rapid growth of broadband connections to desktop computers and ever more capable cell-phones and wireless PDAs.
