Although the self‐condensing atom transfer radical polymerization (SCATRP) of inimers with typical comonomers has been extensively performed, there have been few reports to correlate the reactivity ratio with the growth of the molecular weights (MWs) and the development of branched structures. Thus, the SCATRP of inimers of different reactivity ratios, namely, 4‐chloromethylstyrene (CMS) and maleimide (MI) inimers, with a large excess of styrene (St) were carried out, respectively, to examine the effect. The conversion and MW were monitored by gas chromatography, gel permeation chromatography, and multiangle laser light scattering. The results suggested that CMS merely functioned as an initiator for St at the early stage; this led to linear macroinimers, which underwent SCATRP and gave rise to randomly branched polystyrene (PS) only at high conversion. The MI inimers formed charge‐transfer complexes with St and underwent the SCATRP to result in hyperbranched copolymers at first; this initiated the atom transfer radical polymerization of St and led to star‐shaped PS. With the objective of improving the processability and melt fluidity, the physical properties of poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (PPO) blends with linear, randomly branched, and star‐shaped PS were compared. In comparison with those with linear PS, the PPO/branched PS blends exhibited a higher glass‐transition temperature, a higher melt flow index, and a comparable thermal stability because of the spherical architecture of the branched PS. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four‐arm star‐shaped polymers and copolymers were obtained by transition metal‐catalyzed atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The polymers were characterized by FTIR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. Gel permeation chromatography results indicated the formation of polystyrene and polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) arms with controlled molecular weights. In dilute solution, the linear polymers had higher inherent viscosities than star‐shaped ones. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a similar degradation mechanism for linear and star‐shaped polymers. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated the successful formation of diblock star‐shaped copolymers. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Heat‐resistant branched poly(styrene‐alt‐NPMI) has been prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene (St) and N‐phenyl maleimide (NPMI) with divinylbenzene (DVB) as the branching agent in anisole at 80°C. Gas chromatography (GC) was used to determine the conversion of the reactants. Triple detection gel permeation chromatography (TD‐GPC) was used to analyze the copolymers. The results show that the polymerization yields primary chains predominately in the early stages and the formation of branched molecules occurs mainly when conversion is higher than 50%. As expected, higher dosage of DVB in our investigation range favors the formation of polymers with higher degree of branching. All the resulting branched poly(styrene‐alt‐NPMI)s have glass transition temperature (Tg) above 175°C, extrapolated initial weight loss temperature (Ti) above 410°C and statistic heat‐resistant index above 200°C. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was applied to synthesize a new kind of star polymers of hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) core with multiarms of PS‐b‐PtBA and PS‐b‐PAA by using the “core first” technique. The HPG core was obtained by anionic polymerization of glycerol first, and then the pendant hydroxyl groups of HPG were esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to yield the HPG‐g‐Br, which was used as macroinitiator for ATRP of the first monomer (St) and then second monomer (tBA). After hydrolysis of the PtBA block, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) side chains were formed. The final products and intermediates were characterized by GPC, NMR, and FTIR in detail. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Well‐defined side‐chain liquid crystalline star‐shaped polymers were synthesized with a combination of the “core‐first” method and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Firstly, the functionalized macroinitiator based on the α‐Cyclodextrins (α‐CD) bearing functional bromide groups was synthesized, confirmed by 1H‐NMR, MALDI‐TOF, and FTIR analysis. Secondly, the side‐chain liquid crystalline arms poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAzo) were prepared by ATRP. The characterization of the star polymers were performed with 1H‐NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was found that the liquid crystalline behavior of the star polymer α‐CD‐PMMAzon was similar to that of the linear homopolymer. The phase‐transition temperatures from the smectic to nematic phase and from the nematic to isotropic phase increased as the molecular weight increased for most of these samples. All star‐shaped polymers show photoresponsive isomerization under the irradiation with Ultraviolet light. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Well‐defined polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)‐b‐PS triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), using C—X‐end‐group PEO as macroinitiators. The triblock copolymers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The experimental results showed that the polymerization was controlled/living. It was found that when the number‐average molecular weight of the macroinititors increased from 2000 to 10,000, the molecular weight distribution of the triblock copolymers decreased roughly from 1.49 to 1.07 and the rate of polymerization became much slower. The possible polymerization mechanism is discussed. According to the Cu content measured with atomic absorption spectrometry, the removal of catalysts, with CHCl3 as the solvent and kaolin as the in situ absorption agent, was effective. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Amphiphilic heteroarm star‐shaped polymers have important theoretical and practical significance. In this work, amphiphilic heteroarm star‐shaped polymer was synthesized by the use of polyfunctional chain transfer agent via sequential free radical polymerization in two steps. First, conventional free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by 2,2′‐azobis (isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) was carried out in the presence of polyfunctional chain transfer agent, pentaerythritol‐tertrakis (3‐mercaptopropinate) (PETMP). At appropriate monomer conversion, about two‐arm s‐PMMA having two residual thiol groups at the chain center was obtained. Second, the s‐PMMA obtained above was used as macro‐chain‐transfer agent for free radical polymerization of acrylic acid (AA). The heteroarm star‐shaped polymer with the hydrophobic PMMA segment and the hydrophilic PAA segment was obtained. The successful synthesis of heteroarm star‐shaped polymers, (PMMA)2(AA)2, was confirmed by 1H‐NMR and its self‐assembly behavior in different solvents. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A new kind of initiator, 3‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methylacryloxy)propyltriethysiliane (MPTS‐Br), was prepared with a simply hydrobrominated commercial silane coupling agent (3‐methacryloxy‐proplytriethysilane, MPTS). It has been one‐step self‐assemble onto the surface of attapulgite (ATP) nanorods in the dispersion system, and by using this initiator‐modified nanorod (MPTS‐Br‐modified ATP nanoparticles, ATP‐MPTS‐Br) as macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Structurally well‐defined homopolymer polystyrene (PS) and block polymer poly(styrene‐b‐methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) chains were then grown from the needle‐shaped nanorods surface to yield monodispersed nanorods composed of ATP core and thick‐coated polymer shell (ATP and PS). The graft polymerization parameters exhibited the characteristics of a controlled/”living” polymerization. The PS‐grafted ATP nanorods could be dispersed well in organic solvent with nanoscale. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Well‐defined polystyrenes with an α‐hydrogen atom and an ω‐chlorine atom end groups and narrow polydispersity (Mn = 2500–4200, Mw/Mn = 1.29–1.48) have been synthesized by a free radical polymerization process using a 1,1,2,2‐tetraphenyl‐1,2‐ethanediol (TPED)/FeCl3/PPh3 initiation system. The end groups were monitored by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. When the polymerization of styrenes in bulk carried out at 120°C and the ratio of [St]0 : [TPED]0 : [FeCl3]0 : [PPh3]0 was 200 : 1 : 4 : 12, the polymerization exhibited some living/controlled radical polymerization characteristics. The polymerization mechanism was proposed proceeding via a reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Because the polymers obtained were end‐functionalized by chlorine atoms, they were used as macroinitiators to proceed chain extension polymerization in the presence of CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system via a conventional ATRP process. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Diblock copolymers, poly[(10‐hydroxydecanoic acid)‐block‐styrene] (PHDA‐b‐PSt), were synthesized by combining enzymatic condensation polymerization of HDA and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) as of St PHDA was first obtained via enzymatic condensation polymerization catalyzed by Novozyme‐435. Subsequently, one terminus of the PHDA chains was modified by reaction with α‐bromopropionyl bromide and the other terminus was protected by chlorotrimethylsilane. The resulting monofunctional macroinitiator was used subsequently in ATRP of St using CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst system to afford diblock copolymers including biodegradable PHDA blocks and well‐defined PSt blocks. Polymeric nanospheres were prepared by self‐assembly of the PHDA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers in aqueous medium. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The self‐assembly of amphiphilic copolymers has been demonstrated to be a powerful route towards supramolecular objects with novel architectures, functions and physical properties. In this study, the synthesis and morphology of amphiphilic linear polystyrene (PS)‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP) and heteroarm star PS‐star‐P2VP copolymers are studied. The dispersion of silver nanoparticles with the prepared PS‐block‐P2VP and PS‐star‐P2VP copolymers is also discussed. RESULTS: Amphiphilic copolymers with different P2VP chain lengths were successfully synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The copolymers prepared had low polydispersity indices. Various aggregate morphologies, including spheres, vesicles, rods, large compound micelles, two‐dimensional ring‐like and three‐dimensional hollow structures, were formed by varying the hydrophilic coil length and the selective solvent content. Silver nanoparticles showed good dispersion behavior in both types of copolymers. CONCLUSION: Based on this study, it will be possible to prepare metal/copolymer nanocomposites by direct mixing. Further, the PS‐block‐P2VP and PS‐star‐P2VP copolymers prepared can be used in the preparation of nanoporous films as templates and nanoparticles as nanoreactors. They can also be applied in terms of oil recovery, paints and cosmetics formulations, as well as in pharmaceutical and medical applications as rheological agents. Previously, star polystyrenes (PSs) have been prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N‐[2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl]maleimide (BiBEMI) with a large excess of styrene (St) in one pot. But linear PSs were also present during the formation of the star polymers. In the work reported here, we found that control of the formation of star polymers using a one‐pot approach can be improved by using a two‐step process. The polymerization was conducted first at a low temperature to form multifunctional cores by copolymerization of BiBEMI and St. Second, on increasing the temperature, homopolymerization of St occurred to grow PS arms. Then a series of amphiphilic star polystyrene‐block‐poly(acrylic acid)s, (S14Ax)16, were prepared by ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate with the star PSs as macroinitiators, followed by selective acidolysis of the poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) blocks. Their micellization was studied using dynamic light scattering, which suggested that (S14A112)16 amphiphilic star block copolymers could form unimolecular micelles in a basic aqueous solution. Then pyrene molecules were encapsulated using the (S14A112)16 amphiphilic star copolymers and the loading capacity was investigated with UV and fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of well‐defined and property‐controlled polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)‐b‐polystyrene (PS) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization, using 2‐bromo‐propionate‐end‐group PEO 2000 as macroinitiatators. The structure of triblock copolymers was confirmed by 1H‐NMR and GPC. The relationship between some properties and molecular weight of copolymers was studied. It was found that glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of copolymers gradually rose and crystallinity of copolymers regularly dropped when molecular weight of copolymers increased. The copolymers showed to be amphiphilic. Stable emulsions could form in water layer of copolymer–toluene–water system and the emulsifying abilities of copolymers slightly decreased when molecular weight of copolymers increased. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 5,10,15,20‐tetra(4‐hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (THPP) was synthesized by the condensation of pyrrole with 4‐hydroxybenzaldehyde in the presence of solvent (propionic acid). Subsequently, the resulting THPP was converted to a tetrafunctional star‐shaped macroinitiator (porphyrin‐Br4) by esterification of it with 2‐bromopropanoyl bromide, and then atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene was conducted at 110°C with CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst system. The resulting product was reacted with NBS to obtain star‐shaped initiator porphyrin‐(PSt‐Br)4, which was used the following ATRP of the GMA to synthesize star–comb‐shaped grafted polymer porphyrin‐(PSt‐g‐PGMA)4. The number molecular weight was 2.3 × 104 g/mol, and the dispersity was narrow (Mw/Mn = 1.32). The structure of the polymers was investigated by NMR, UV–vis, IR, and GPC measurement. The self‐assembly behavior of the polymer porphyrin‐(PSt‐g‐PGMA)4 was studied by DLS and AFM. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PEG‐b‐PNIPAM) block copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization, and the α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD) induced self‐assembly characteristics of the system were elucidated. Below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM, CD threaded onto the PEG segments and induced micellization to form rod‐shaped nanostructures comprising of a PEG/α‐CD condensed phase and a PNIPAM shell. Increasing the temperature of system above the LCST caused the PNIPAM segments to collapse, which resulted in the dethreading of the CD. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A series of novel star‐like copolymers H20‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐random‐poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (H20‐PNIPAm‐r‐PEGMA), which could respond to both temperature and ionic strength stimuli in aqueous solution were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Stimuli‐response of these copolymers in aqueous solution was characterized by dynamic laser scattering (DLS), 1H‐NMR and turbidity. In aqueous solution, these star‐like copolymers exhibited response to temperature and ionic strength with tunable low‐critical solution temperature (LCST) from 32 to 100°C. The LCST values of copolymers increased with increasing PEGMA contents, while decreased with increasing ionic strength. An interesting phenomenon, which should be a unique character of star‐like copolymer, was observed by the turbidity test of copolymer 1160. The addition of sodium chloride and increase of concentration can let copolymer 1160 behave normally, which was further confirmed by atomic force microscopy and DLS. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mono‐ and bifunctional poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were prepared by esterification of mono‐ and bishydroxy telechelic PPO with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The macroinitiators were used for ATRP of styrene to give block copolymers with PPO and polystyrene (PS) segments, namely PPO‐block‐PS and PS‐block‐PPO‐block‐PS. Various ligands were studied in combination with CuBr as ATRP catalysts. Kinetic investigations revealed controlled polymerization processes for certain ligands and temperature ranges. Thermal analysis of the block copolymers by means of DSC revealed only one glass transition temperature as a result of the compatibility of the PS and PPO chain segments and the formation of a single phase; this glass transition temperature can be adjusted over a wide temperature range (ca 100–199 °C), depending on the composition of the block copolymer. A polystyrene (PS)‐b‐polylactide (PLA) block copolymer was prepared from the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization with commercially available 2,2,2‐tribromoethanol as a dual initiator in a sequential two‐step procedure. Hydroxyl‐terminated polystyrene (PS‐OH)s with various molecular weights were first prepared with polydispersity indices lower than 1.3; these provided valuable macroinitiators for the polymerization of D,L ‐lactide. A block copolymer with a composition allowing the formation of hexagonally packed PLA cylinders in a PS matrix was then obtained. The PS‐b‐PLA thin films revealed, after vapor solvent annealing, a hexagonally packed organization of the PLA cylinders, which was oriented perpendicularly to the surface of the film. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A highly fluorescent fluorescein dye labeled star shaped random copolymer with precise energy distribution was synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization. The arm‐first strategy was utilized to achieve star architecture of the polymer. Dye labeling was carried out by azide‐alkyne cycloaddition. Acrylic acid and fluorescein dye both contributed to achieve a pH response. The synthesized polymer showed an attractive pH‐ and solvent‐sensitive fluorescence owing to efficient energy transfer from one fluorescent center to another. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Colorimetric mechanophores like spiropyran (SP) represent an emerging type of interesting signal molecule that can be incorporated into polymers or other materials as a stress transducer. In this work, a new type of spiropyran‐containing inimer molecule MA‐SP‐Br are designed and synthesized, which is incorporated into polybutylacrylate (PBA) chains through reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization with n‐butyl acrylate (BA). PBA‐SP‐Br is then used as a macro‐initiator to graft polystyrene (PS) side chains from the PBA backbone through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene. The resulting comb‐structured graft copolymer PBA‐SP‐PS contains 0.15–0.34% SP and exhibits a characteristic feature of thermoplastic elastomers. Under uniaxial stretch, the materials possess an excellent mechano‐responsivity and change color at strains as low as about 14%.  相似文献
