The synthesis of polystyrene‐b‐polydimethylsiloxane‐b‐polystyrene (PSt‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PSt) copolymers is described. Commercially available difunctional PDMS containing vinylsilyl terminal species was reacted with hydrogen bromide resulting in the PDMS macroinitiators. The terminal alkyl bromide groups were then used as initiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to produce block copolymers. Using this technique, triblock copolymers consisting of a PDMS centre block and polystyrene terminal blocks were synthesized. ATRP of St from those macroinitiators showed linear increases in Mn with conversion, demonstrating the effectiveness of ATRP to synthesize a variety of inorganic/organic polymer hybrids. Background: Radical polymerization is used widely to polymerize more than 70% of vinyl monomers in industry, but the control over molecular weight and end group of the resulting polymers is always a challenging task with this method. To prepare polymers with desired molecular weight and end groups, many controlled radical polymerization (CRP) ideas have been proposed over the last decade. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the successful CRP techniques. Using ATRP, there is no report on the synthesis of polystyrene‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐polystyrene (PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt) tri‐block copolymers. Hence this paper describes the method of synthesizing these tri‐block copolymers. To accomplish this, first telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane was synthesized and used further to synthesize PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt tri‐block copolymers using CuBr as a catalyst and N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a complexing agent. Results: The ‘living’ nature of the initiating system was confirmed by linear increase of number‐average molecular weight and conversion with time. A semi‐logarithmic kinetics plot shows that the concentration of propagating radical is steady. The results from nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry show that the novel PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt tri‐block copolymers were formed through the ATRP mechanism. Conclusion: For the first time, PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt tri‐block copolymers were synthesized through ATRP. The advantage of this method is that the controlled incorporation of polystyrene block in polyurethane can be achieved by simply changing the polymerization time. Mono‐ and bifunctional poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were prepared by esterification of mono‐ and bishydroxy telechelic PPO with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The macroinitiators were used for ATRP of styrene to give block copolymers with PPO and polystyrene (PS) segments, namely PPO‐block‐PS and PS‐block‐PPO‐block‐PS. Various ligands were studied in combination with CuBr as ATRP catalysts. Kinetic investigations revealed controlled polymerization processes for certain ligands and temperature ranges. Thermal analysis of the block copolymers by means of DSC revealed only one glass transition temperature as a result of the compatibility of the PS and PPO chain segments and the formation of a single phase; this glass transition temperature can be adjusted over a wide temperature range (ca 100–199 °C), depending on the composition of the block copolymer. Four‐arm star‐shaped polymers and copolymers were obtained by transition metal‐catalyzed atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The polymers were characterized by FTIR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. Gel permeation chromatography results indicated the formation of polystyrene and polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) arms with controlled molecular weights. In dilute solution, the linear polymers had higher inherent viscosities than star‐shaped ones. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a similar degradation mechanism for linear and star‐shaped polymers. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated the successful formation of diblock star‐shaped copolymers. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Macromonomer initiators behave as macro cross‐linkers, macro initiators, and macromonomers to obtain branched and cross‐linked block/graft copolymers. A series of new macromonomer initiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (MIM‐ATRP) based on polyethylene glycol (Mn = 495D, 2203D, and 4203D) (PEG) were synthesized by the reaction of the hydroxyl end of mono‐methacryloyl polyethylene glycol with 2‐bromo propanoyl chloride, leading to methacryloyl polyethylene glycol 2‐bromo propanoyl ester. Poly (ethylene glycol) functionalized with methacrylate at one end was reacted with 2‐bromopropionyl chloride to form a macromonomeric initiator for ATRP. ATRP was found to be a more controllable polymerization method than conventional free radical polymerization in view of fewer cross‐linked polymers and highly branched polymers produced from macromonomer initiators as well. In another scenario, ATRP of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was initiated by MIM‐ATRP to obtain PEG‐b‐PNIPAM branched block/graft copolymers. Thermal analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR, TEM, and SEM techniques were used in the characterization of the products. They had a thermo‐responsive character and exhibited volume phase transition at ~ 36°C. A plasticizer effect of PEG in graft copolymers was also observed, indicating a lower glass transition temperature than that of pure PNIPAM. Homo and copolymerization kinetics were also evaluated. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) was developed for the controlled preparation of polystyrene (PS)/poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) triblock copolymers. First, PS and P4VP homopolymers were prepared using dibenzyl trithiocarbonate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Then, PS‐b‐P4VP‐b‐PS and P4VP‐b‐PS‐b‐P4VP triblock copolymers were synthesized using as macro‐CTA the obtained homopolymers PS and P4VP, respectively. The synthesized polymers had relatively narrower molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25), and the polymerization was controlled/living. Furthermore, the polymerization rate appeared to be lower when styrene was polymerized using P4VP as the macro‐CTA, compared with polymerizing 4‐vinylpyridine using PS as the macro‐CTA. This was attributed to the different transfer constants of the P4VP and PS macro‐CTAs to the styrene and the 4‐vinylpyridine, respectively. The aggregates of the triblock copolymers with different compositions and chain architectures in water also were investigated, and the results are presented. Reducing the P4VP block length and keeping the PS block constant favored the formation of rod aggregates. Moreover, the chain architecture in which the P4VP block was in the middle of the copolymer chain was rather favorable to the rod assembly because of the entropic penalty associated with the looping of the middle‐block P4VP to form the aggregate corona and tailing of the end‐block PS into the core of the aggregates. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005  相似文献

The synthesis of triblock copolymer poly(octadecyl acrylate‐b‐styrene‐b‐octadecyl acrylate), using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), is reported. The copolymers were prepared in two steps. First, polystyrene was synthesized by ATRP using α,α′‐dichloro‐p‐xylene/CuBr/bpy as the initiating system; Second, polystyrene was further used as macroinitiator for the ATRP of octadecyl acrylate to prepare ABA triblock copolymers in the presence of FeCl2·4H2O/PPh3 in toluene. Polymers with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 17,000–23,400) and low polydispersity index value (1.33–1.44) were obtained. The relationship between molecular weight versus conversion showed a straight line. The effect of reaction temperature on polymerization was also investigated, showing a faster polymerization rate under higher temperature. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H‐NMR, DSC, and GPC and the crystallization behavior of the copolymers was also studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The combination of radical‐promoted cationic polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click chemistry was employed for the efficient preparation of poly(cyclohexene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PCHO‐b‐PSt). Alkyne end‐functionalized poly(cyclohexene oxide) (PCHO‐alkyne) was prepared by radical‐promoted cationic polymerization of cyclohexene oxide monomer in the presence of 1,2‐diphenyl‐2‐(2‐propynyloxy)‐1‐ethanone (B‐alkyne) and an onium salt, namely 1‐ethoxy‐2‐methylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate, as the initiating system. The B‐alkyne compound was synthesized using benzoin photoinitiator and propargyl bromide. Well‐defined bromine‐terminated polystyrene (PSt‐Br) was prepared by ATRP using 2‐oxo‐1,2‐diphenylethyl‐2‐bromopropanoate as initiator. Subsequently, the bromine chain end of PSt‐Br was converted to an azide group to obtain PSt‐N3 by a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction. Then the coupling reaction between the azide end group in PSt‐N3 and PCHO‐alkyne was performed with Cu(I) catalysis in order to obtain the PCHO‐b‐PSt block copolymer. The structures of all polymers were determined. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) monochloro macroinitiators or PEO telechelic macroinitiators (Cl‐PEO‐Cl) were prepared from monohydroxyfunctional or dihydroxyfunctional PEO and 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. These macroinitiators were applied to the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene (S). The polymerization was carried out in bulk at 140°C and catalyzed by Copper(I) chloride (CuCl) in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine (bipy) ligand (CuCl/bipy). The amphiphilic copolymers were either A‐B diblock or A‐B‐A triblock type, where A block is polystyrene (PS) and B block is PEO. The living nature of the polymerizations leads to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (1.072 < Mw/Mn < 1.392) for most of the macroinitiators synthesized. The macroinitiator itself and the corresponding block copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and SEC analysis. By adjusting the content of the PEO blocks it was possible to prepare water‐soluble/dispersible block copolymers. The obtained block copolymers were used to control paper surface characteristics by surface treatment with small amount of chemicals. The printability of the treated paper was evaluated with polarity factors, liquid absorption measurements, and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. From our study, it is observed that the chain length of the hydrophilic block and the amount of hydrophobic block play an important role in modification of the paper surface. Among all of block copolymers synthesized, the PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS containing 10 wt % PS was found to retard water absorption considerably. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymers of liquid crystalline 6‐(4‐cyanobiphenyl‐4′‐oxy) hexyl acrylate (LC6) and styrene (St) were obtained by the combination of two different free‐radical polymerization mechanisms namely conventional free‐radical polymerization (CFRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the first part, thermosensitive azo alkyl halide, difunctional initiator (AI), was prepared and then used for CFRP of LC6 monomer. The obtained bromine‐ended difunctional liquid crystalline polymers (PLC6) were used as initiators in ATRP of St, in bulk in conjunction with CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as catalyst. In the second part, AI was firstly polymerized by CFRP in the presence of St and then the obtained difunctional bromine ended polystyrenes (PSt) were used as initiators in ATRP of LC6 in diphenyl ether solvent in conjuction with CuBr/PMDETA. The spectral, thermal, and optical measurements confirmed a fully controlled living polymerization, which results in formation of ABA‐type block copolymers with very narrow polydispersities. In both cases, blocks of the different chemical composition were segregated in the solid and melt phases. The mesophase transition temperatures of the liquid crystalline block were found to be very similar to those of the corresponding homopolymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The quantitative syntheses of α‐bis and α,ω‐tetrakis tertiary diamine functionalized polymers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) methods are described. A tertiary diamine functionalized 1,1‐diphenylethylene derivative, 1,1‐bis[(4‐dimethylamino)phenyl]ethylene (1), was evaluated as a unimolecular tertiary diamine functionalized initiator precursor as well as a functionalizing agent in ATRP reactions. The ATRP of styrene, initiated by a new tertiary diamine functionalized initiator adduct (2), affords the corresponding α‐bis(4‐dimethylaminophenyl) functionalized polystyrene (3). The tertiary diamine functionalized initiator adduct (2) was prepared in situ by the reaction of (1‐bromoethyl)benzene with 1,1‐bis[(4‐dimethylamino)phenyl]ethylene (1) in the presence of a copper (I) bromide/2,2′‐bipyridyl catalyst system. The ATRP of styrene proceeded via a controlled free radical polymerization process to afford quantitative yields of the corresponding α‐bis(4‐dimethylaminophenyl) functionalized polystyrene derivative (3) with predictable number‐average molecular weight (Mn) and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) in a high initiator efficiency reaction. The polymerization process was monitored by gas chromatography analysis. Quantitative yields of α,ω‐tetrakis(4‐dimethylaminophenyl) functionalized polystyrene (4) were obtained by a new post ATRP chain end modification reaction of α‐bis(4‐dimethylaminophenyl) functionalized polystyrene (3) with excess 1,1‐bis[(4‐dimethylamino)phenyl]ethylene (1). The tertiary diamine functionalized initiator precursor 1,1‐bis[(4‐dimethylamino)phenyl]ethylene (1) and the different tertiary amine functionalized polymers were characterized by chromatography, spectroscopy and non‐aqueous titration measurements. Well‐defined polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)‐b‐PS triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), using C—X‐end‐group PEO as macroinitiators. The triblock copolymers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The experimental results showed that the polymerization was controlled/living. It was found that when the number‐average molecular weight of the macroinititors increased from 2000 to 10,000, the molecular weight distribution of the triblock copolymers decreased roughly from 1.49 to 1.07 and the rate of polymerization became much slower. The possible polymerization mechanism is discussed. According to the Cu content measured with atomic absorption spectrometry, the removal of catalysts, with CHCl3 as the solvent and kaolin as the in situ absorption agent, was effective. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Y-shaped diblock copolymer polycaprolactone-block-(polystyrene)2 [PCL-b-(PSt)2] was synthesized successfully by the combination of enzymatic ring-opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). CH3O-terminated PCL was synthesized firstly by eROP of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) in the presence of biocatalyst Novozyme 435 and initiator CH3OH, subsequently the resulting PCL was converted to macroinitiator by the esterification of it with 2,2-dichloro acetyl chloride (DCAC). PCL-b-(PSt)2 diblock copolymers were synthesized in an ATRP of the styrene with CuCl/2,2′-bipyridine as the catalyst system. The kinetic analysis of ATRP indicated a controlled/‘living’ radical polymerization. The structure and composition of obtained polymers were characterized with NMR, GPC and FTIR. The thermal behavior was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).  相似文献

Poly ε‐caprolactone‐polystyrene block‐copolymers (PCL‐b‐PSt) were synthesized using a modified titanium catalyst as the dual initiator. Alcoholysis of Ti(OPr)4 by 4‐hydroxy 2,2,6,6 tetramethyl piperidinyl‐1‐oxyl (HO‐TEMPO) gave a bifunctional initiator Ti(OTEMPO)4. Poly ε‐caprolactone prepolymer end‐capped with the nitroxide group was first prepared by ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone with this initiator at high conversion. The nitroxide‐end‐capped structure and molar mass (Mn) of the polymers were demonstrated by typical UV absorption band. This analytical technique indicates a near‐quantitative nitroxide functionality and a Mn in good agreement with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) ones. This polyester prepolymer was used to further initiate the radical polymerization with styrene and reach the block copolymers (PCL‐b‐PSt). All the prepolymers and block copolymers were characterized by SEC and NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, the preparation of star polymers bearing two kinds of arms (PCL and PSt) was envisaged and a preliminary result was given. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: The surface of a substrate which comprises a fibrous material is brought into contact with a type of amphiphilic block copolymer which comprises hydrophilic/hydrophobic polymeric blocks. These amphiphilic copolymers have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The atom transfer radical polymerization of poly(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PFS‐b‐PEO) copolymers (di‐ and triblock structures) with various ranges of PEO molecular weights was initiated by a PEO chloro‐telechelic macroinitiator. The polymerization, carried out in bulk and catalysed by copper(I) chloride in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine ligand, led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock and A–B amphiphilic diblock structures. RESULTS: With most of the macroinitiators, the living nature of the polymerizations led to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (1.09 < Mw/Mn < 1.33) and well‐controlled molecular structures. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through adjustment of the PEO block content (>90 wt%). Of all the block copolymers synthesized, PFS‐b‐PEO(10k)‐b‐PFS containing 10 wt% PFS was found to retard water absorption considerably. CONCLUSION: The printability of paper treated with the copolymers was evaluated with contact angle measurements and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. Well‐defined asymmetric amphiphilic ABA′ block copolymers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) monomethylene ether (MPEO) with different molecular weights as A or A′ block and poly(styrene) (PS) as B block were synthesized by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click reactions. First, bromine‐terminated diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide) monomethylene ether‐block‐poly(styrene) (MPEO‐PS‐Br) was prepared by ATRP of styrene initiated with macroinitiator MPEO‐Br, which was prepared from the esterification of MPEO and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. Then, the azido‐terminated diblock copolymers MPEO‐PS‐N3 were prepared through the bromine substitution reaction with sodium azide. Propargyl‐terminated MPEO with a different molecular weight was prepared under the basic condition from propargyl alcohol and p‐toluenesulfonyl‐terminated MPEO, which was prepared through the esterification of MPEO and p‐toluenesulfochloride using pyridine as solvent. Asymmetric amphiphilic ABA′ block copolymers, with a wide range of number–average molecular weights from 1.92 × 104 to 2.47 × 104 and a narrow polydispersity from 1.03 to 1.05, were synthesized via a click reaction of the azido‐terminated diblock copolymers and the propargyl‐terminated MPEO in the presence of CuBr and 1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) catalyst system. The structures of these ABA′ block copolymers and corresponding precursors were characterized by NMR, IR, and GPC. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

In this study a series of novel semifluorinated ABA triblock copolymers with different fluorinated segment lengths and different fluorocarbon side‐chain structures were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and macroinitiator techniques. The macroinitiator, telechelic bromine terminated polystyrene, was obtained from bulk ATRP of styrene with α,α′‐dibromo‐p‐xylene as the initiator and cuprous bromide/α,α′‐bispyridine complex as the catalyst. The polymerization reactions of 2‐[(perfluorononenyl)oxy] ethyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol monomethacrylate monoperfluorooctanoate were initiated by the macroinitiator in the presence of additional catalyst. The characterization of the block copolymers was performed by gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The surface activities of the block copolymers in toluene were investigated with the Wilhelmy plate method. The solid surface energy of the block copolymers was determined by measurement of the contact angles. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 2625–2633, 2002  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In a number of studies it has been shown that 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinooxy (TEMPO)‐mediated polymerization of acrylates is not facile. Therefore, the object of the study reported here was to prepare poly[styrene‐block‐(tert‐butyl acrylate)] (PS‐b‐PtBA) block copolymers using 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator as an initiator, in the presence of small amounts of N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). The kinetic analysis and the effect of DMF on the reaction mechanism are also discussed. RESULTS: PS‐b‐PtBA block copolymer was prepared through polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) initiated by 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator at 135 °C. The polymerization rate of tBA could be increased by adding a small amount of DMF, and the number average molecular weight of the PtBA block in PS‐b‐PtBA reached 10 000 g mol?1 with narrow polydispersity. The activation rate constant kact?tBA of alkoxyamine increased and the recombination rate constant krec?tBA decreased with increasing DMF concentration. CONCLUSION: DMF was shown to be a rate‐enhancing additive for the polymerization of tBA using a 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator. From the kinetic analysis, it was concluded that the improvement of polymerization with the addition of DMF was due to an increase in kact?tBA and a decrease in krec?tBA. Polystyrene‐b‐poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐b‐polystyrene (Pst‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PSt) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available difunctional PDMS containing vinylsilyl terminal species was reacted with hydrogen bromide, resulting in the PDMS macroinitiators for the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 130°C in a phenyl ether solution with CuCl and 4, 4′‐di (5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy) as the catalyzing system. By using this technique, triblock copolymers consisting of a PDMS center block and polystyrene terminal blocks were synthesized. The polymerization was controllable; ATRP of St from those macroinitiators showed linear increases in Mn with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR and 1H‐NMR.
