Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005  相似文献

The combination of radical‐promoted cationic polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click chemistry was employed for the efficient preparation of poly(cyclohexene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PCHO‐b‐PSt). Alkyne end‐functionalized poly(cyclohexene oxide) (PCHO‐alkyne) was prepared by radical‐promoted cationic polymerization of cyclohexene oxide monomer in the presence of 1,2‐diphenyl‐2‐(2‐propynyloxy)‐1‐ethanone (B‐alkyne) and an onium salt, namely 1‐ethoxy‐2‐methylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate, as the initiating system. The B‐alkyne compound was synthesized using benzoin photoinitiator and propargyl bromide. Well‐defined bromine‐terminated polystyrene (PSt‐Br) was prepared by ATRP using 2‐oxo‐1,2‐diphenylethyl‐2‐bromopropanoate as initiator. Subsequently, the bromine chain end of PSt‐Br was converted to an azide group to obtain PSt‐N3 by a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction. Then the coupling reaction between the azide end group in PSt‐N3 and PCHO‐alkyne was performed with Cu(I) catalysis in order to obtain the PCHO‐b‐PSt block copolymer. The structures of all polymers were determined. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The chemoenzymatic synthesis of a novel diblock copolymer consisting of a hydrocarbon block of polycaprolactone (PCL) and an epoxy‐based block of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was achieved by the combination of enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A trichloromethyl‐terminated PCL macrointiator was obtained via Novozyme 435‐catalyzed eROP of ε‐caprolactone from a bifunctional initiator, 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol, under anhydrous conditions. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate. The kinetics analysis of ATRP indicated a ‘living’/controlled radical polymerization. The macromolecular structure and thermal properties of the PCL macroinitiator and of the diblock copolymer were characterized using NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The well‐defined PCL‐b‐PGMA amphiphilic diblock copolymer self‐assembled in aqueous solution into nanoscale micelles. The size and shape of the resulting micelles were investigated using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy. Poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PEG‐b‐PNIPAM) block copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization, and the α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD) induced self‐assembly characteristics of the system were elucidated. Below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM, CD threaded onto the PEG segments and induced micellization to form rod‐shaped nanostructures comprising of a PEG/α‐CD condensed phase and a PNIPAM shell. Increasing the temperature of system above the LCST caused the PNIPAM segments to collapse, which resulted in the dethreading of the CD. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Diblock copolymers, poly[(10‐hydroxydecanoic acid)‐block‐styrene] (PHDA‐b‐PSt), were synthesized by combining enzymatic condensation polymerization of HDA and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) as of St PHDA was first obtained via enzymatic condensation polymerization catalyzed by Novozyme‐435. Subsequently, one terminus of the PHDA chains was modified by reaction with α‐bromopropionyl bromide and the other terminus was protected by chlorotrimethylsilane. The resulting monofunctional macroinitiator was used subsequently in ATRP of St using CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst system to afford diblock copolymers including biodegradable PHDA blocks and well‐defined PSt blocks. Polymeric nanospheres were prepared by self‐assembly of the PHDA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers in aqueous medium. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The surface of a substrate which comprises a fibrous material is brought into contact with a type of amphiphilic block copolymer which comprises hydrophilic/hydrophobic polymeric blocks. These amphiphilic copolymers have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The atom transfer radical polymerization of poly(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PFS‐b‐PEO) copolymers (di‐ and triblock structures) with various ranges of PEO molecular weights was initiated by a PEO chloro‐telechelic macroinitiator. The polymerization, carried out in bulk and catalysed by copper(I) chloride in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine ligand, led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock and A–B amphiphilic diblock structures. RESULTS: With most of the macroinitiators, the living nature of the polymerizations led to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (1.09 < Mw/Mn < 1.33) and well‐controlled molecular structures. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through adjustment of the PEO block content (>90 wt%). Of all the block copolymers synthesized, PFS‐b‐PEO(10k)‐b‐PFS containing 10 wt% PFS was found to retard water absorption considerably. CONCLUSION: The printability of paper treated with the copolymers was evaluated with contact angle measurements and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. Polystyrene terminated with benzyl alcohol units was employed as a macroinitiator for ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone and L ‐lactide to yield AB‐ and ABC‐type block copolymers. Even though there are many reports on the diblock copolymers of poly(styrene‐block‐lactide) and poly(styrene‐block‐lactone), this is the first report on the poly(styrene‐block‐lactone‐block‐lactide) triblock copolymer consisting of two semicrystalline and degradable segments. The triblock copolymers exhibited twin melting behavior in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis with thermal transitions corresponding to each of the lactone and lactide blocks. The block derived from ε‐caprolactone also showed crystallization transitions upon cooling from the melt. In the DSC analysis, one of the triblock copolymers showed an exothermic transition well above the melting temperature upon cooling. Thermogravimetric analysis of these block copolymers showed a two‐step degradation curve for the diblock copolymer and a three‐step degradation for the triblock copolymer with each of the degradation steps associated with each segment of the block copolymers. The present study shows that it is possible to make pure triblock copolymers with two semicrystalline segments which also consist of degradable blocks. 5,10,15,20‐tetra(4‐hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (THPP) was synthesized by the condensation of pyrrole with 4‐hydroxybenzaldehyde in the presence of solvent (propionic acid). Subsequently, the resulting THPP was converted to a tetrafunctional star‐shaped macroinitiator (porphyrin‐Br4) by esterification of it with 2‐bromopropanoyl bromide, and then atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene was conducted at 110°C with CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst system. The resulting product was reacted with NBS to obtain star‐shaped initiator porphyrin‐(PSt‐Br)4, which was used the following ATRP of the GMA to synthesize star–comb‐shaped grafted polymer porphyrin‐(PSt‐g‐PGMA)4. The number molecular weight was 2.3 × 104 g/mol, and the dispersity was narrow (Mw/Mn = 1.32). The structure of the polymers was investigated by NMR, UV–vis, IR, and GPC measurement. The self‐assembly behavior of the polymer porphyrin‐(PSt‐g‐PGMA)4 was studied by DLS and AFM. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

A polystyrene (PS)‐b‐polylactide (PLA) block copolymer was prepared from the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization with commercially available 2,2,2‐tribromoethanol as a dual initiator in a sequential two‐step procedure. Hydroxyl‐terminated polystyrene (PS‐OH)s with various molecular weights were first prepared with polydispersity indices lower than 1.3; these provided valuable macroinitiators for the polymerization of D,L ‐lactide. A block copolymer with a composition allowing the formation of hexagonally packed PLA cylinders in a PS matrix was then obtained. The PS‐b‐PLA thin films revealed, after vapor solvent annealing, a hexagonally packed organization of the PLA cylinders, which was oriented perpendicularly to the surface of the film. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Biocatalytic approaches in polymer science are expected to further increase the diversity of polymeric materials. And the full exploitation of biocatalysis in polymer science will require the development of compatible chemoenzyme‐catalyzed methods. RESULTS: The well‐defined diblock copolymer poly(2,2,2‐trichloroethanol 10‐hydroxydecanate)‐block‐poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (P(TCE‐10‐HD)‐b‐PGMA) was obtained by combining enzymatic condensation polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). P(TCE‐10‐HD) was prepared by enzymatic condensation polymerization of 10‐hydroxydecanoic acid and 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol. This ? CCl3‐terminated polyester permitted subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate. Kinetic studies indicated a ‘living’ controlled radical polymerization. The self‐assembly behavior of the amphiphilic diblock copolymer, in tetrahydrofuran/water, gave rise to aggregates with diameters ranging from 160 to 240 nm. The morphology of the assembly particles was studied using atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. CONCLUSION: To obtain the ATRP macromolecular initiator, this one‐step method is more convenient than other two‐step methods. The results of NMR, Fourier transform infrared and gel permeation chromatography analyses testified that this method is feasible. The formulated vesicles have great potential as biomedical materials. Two monodisperse graft copolymers, poly(4‐methylstyrene)‐graft‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) [number‐average molecular weight (Mn) = 37,500, weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight (Mw/Mn) = 1.12] and polystyrene‐graft‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (Mn = 72,800, Mw/Mn = 1.12), were prepared by the atom transfer radical polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate catalyzed with Cu(I) halides. As macroinitiators, poly{(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐[(4‐bromomethyl)styrene]} and poly{styrene‐co‐[4‐(1‐(2‐bromopropionyloxy)ethyl)styrene]}, carrying 40% of the bromoalkyl functionalities along the chain, were used. The dependencies of molecular parameters on monomer conversion fulfilled the criteria for controlled polymerizations. In contrast, the dependencies of monomer conversion versus time were nonideal; possible causes were examined. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 86: 2930–2936, 2002  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Y‐shaped block copolymers are a type of special star polymer that have received considerable attention due to their unique morphologies and phase behavior. This research is based on the preparation of novel Y‐shaped block copolymers using enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), followed by an investigation of their micellization properties. RESULTS: Y‐shaped block copolymers consisting of polycaprolactone and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) were synthesized successfully by the combination of eROP and ATRP. NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared and atomic force microscopy analyses confirmed the compositions of the block copolymers. The dispersity obtained from GPC was less than 1.4, which indicated a control of the polymerization. The self‐assembly behavior of the Y‐shaped block copolymers was investigated in aqueous media. Aggregates of various morphologies (such as spherical micelles, lamellae, worm‐like micelles and large compound micelles) were observed. In addition, it was found that both the copolymer composition and concentration in tetrahydrofuran greatly influenced the morphologies of the aggregates. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the Y‐shaped diblock copolymers can be synthesized by simple methods. They have various morphologies, including normal spherical micelles, lamellae, worm‐like micelles and large compound micelles. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 1‐(butoxy)ethyl methacrylate (BEMA) was carried out using CuBr/2,2′‐bipyridyl complex as catalyst and 2‐bromo‐2‐methyl‐propionic acid ester as initiator. The number average molecular weight of the obtained polymers increased with monomer conversion, and molecular weight distributions were unimodal throughout the reaction and shifted toward higher molecular weights. Using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a bromine atom at the chain end, which was prepared by ATRP, as the macro‐initiator, a diblock copolymer PMMA‐block‐poly [1‐(butoxy)ethyl methacrylate] (PMMA‐b‐PBEMA) has been synthesized by means of ATRP of BEMA. The amphiphilic diblock copolymer PMMA‐block‐poly(methacrylic acid) can be further obtained very easily by hydrolysis of PMMA‐b‐PBEMA under mild acidic conditions. The molecular weight and the structure of the above‐mentioned polymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. BACKGROUND: The self‐assembly of amphiphilic copolymers has been demonstrated to be a powerful route towards supramolecular objects with novel architectures, functions and physical properties. In this study, the synthesis and morphology of amphiphilic linear polystyrene (PS)‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP) and heteroarm star PS‐star‐P2VP copolymers are studied. The dispersion of silver nanoparticles with the prepared PS‐block‐P2VP and PS‐star‐P2VP copolymers is also discussed. RESULTS: Amphiphilic copolymers with different P2VP chain lengths were successfully synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The copolymers prepared had low polydispersity indices. Various aggregate morphologies, including spheres, vesicles, rods, large compound micelles, two‐dimensional ring‐like and three‐dimensional hollow structures, were formed by varying the hydrophilic coil length and the selective solvent content. Silver nanoparticles showed good dispersion behavior in both types of copolymers. CONCLUSION: Based on this study, it will be possible to prepare metal/copolymer nanocomposites by direct mixing. Further, the PS‐block‐P2VP and PS‐star‐P2VP copolymers prepared can be used in the preparation of nanoporous films as templates and nanoparticles as nanoreactors. They can also be applied in terms of oil recovery, paints and cosmetics formulations, as well as in pharmaceutical and medical applications as rheological agents. Well‐defined poly(vinyl acetate‐b‐methyl methacrylate) block copolymers were successfully synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in p‐xylene with CuBr as a catalyst, 2,2′‐bipyridine as a ligand, and trichloromethyl‐end‐grouped poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc–CCl3) as a macroinitiator that was prepared via the telomerization of vinyl acetate with chloroform as a telogen. The block copolymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H‐NMR. The effects of the solvent and temperature on ATRP of MMA were studied. The control over a large range of molecular weights was investigated with a high [MMA]/[PVAc–CCl3] ratio for potential industry applications. In addition, the mechanism of the polymerization was discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 1089–1094, 2006  相似文献

Background: Radical polymerization is used widely to polymerize more than 70% of vinyl monomers in industry, but the control over molecular weight and end group of the resulting polymers is always a challenging task with this method. To prepare polymers with desired molecular weight and end groups, many controlled radical polymerization (CRP) ideas have been proposed over the last decade. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the successful CRP techniques. Using ATRP, there is no report on the synthesis of polystyrene‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐polystyrene (PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt) tri‐block copolymers. Hence this paper describes the method of synthesizing these tri‐block copolymers. To accomplish this, first telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane was synthesized and used further to synthesize PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt tri‐block copolymers using CuBr as a catalyst and N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a complexing agent. Results: The ‘living’ nature of the initiating system was confirmed by linear increase of number‐average molecular weight and conversion with time. A semi‐logarithmic kinetics plot shows that the concentration of propagating radical is steady. The results from nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry show that the novel PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt tri‐block copolymers were formed through the ATRP mechanism. Conclusion: For the first time, PSt‐b‐PU‐b‐PSt tri‐block copolymers were synthesized through ATRP. The advantage of this method is that the controlled incorporation of polystyrene block in polyurethane can be achieved by simply changing the polymerization time. Mono‐ and bifunctional poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were prepared by esterification of mono‐ and bishydroxy telechelic PPO with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The macroinitiators were used for ATRP of styrene to give block copolymers with PPO and polystyrene (PS) segments, namely PPO‐block‐PS and PS‐block‐PPO‐block‐PS. Various ligands were studied in combination with CuBr as ATRP catalysts. Kinetic investigations revealed controlled polymerization processes for certain ligands and temperature ranges. Thermal analysis of the block copolymers by means of DSC revealed only one glass transition temperature as a result of the compatibility of the PS and PPO chain segments and the formation of a single phase; this glass transition temperature can be adjusted over a wide temperature range (ca 100–199 °C), depending on the composition of the block copolymer. Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) was developed for the controlled preparation of polystyrene (PS)/poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) triblock copolymers. First, PS and P4VP homopolymers were prepared using dibenzyl trithiocarbonate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Then, PS‐b‐P4VP‐b‐PS and P4VP‐b‐PS‐b‐P4VP triblock copolymers were synthesized using as macro‐CTA the obtained homopolymers PS and P4VP, respectively. The synthesized polymers had relatively narrower molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25), and the polymerization was controlled/living. Furthermore, the polymerization rate appeared to be lower when styrene was polymerized using P4VP as the macro‐CTA, compared with polymerizing 4‐vinylpyridine using PS as the macro‐CTA. This was attributed to the different transfer constants of the P4VP and PS macro‐CTAs to the styrene and the 4‐vinylpyridine, respectively. The aggregates of the triblock copolymers with different compositions and chain architectures in water also were investigated, and the results are presented. Reducing the P4VP block length and keeping the PS block constant favored the formation of rod aggregates. Moreover, the chain architecture in which the P4VP block was in the middle of the copolymer chain was rather favorable to the rod assembly because of the entropic penalty associated with the looping of the middle‐block P4VP to form the aggregate corona and tailing of the end‐block PS into the core of the aggregates. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new graft copolymers poly(aryl ether sulfone)‐graft‐polystyrene (PSF‐g‐PS) and poly(aryl ether sulfone)‐graft‐[polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate)] (PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA)) were successfully prepared via atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) catalyzed by FeCl2/isophthalic acid in N,N‐dimethyl formamide. The products were characterized by GPC, DSC, IR, TGA and NMR. The characterization data indicated that the graft copolymerization was accomplished via conventional ATRP mechanism. The effect of chloride content of the macroinitiator on the graft copolymerization was investigated. Only one glass transition temperature (Tg) was detected by DSC for the graft copolymer PSF‐g‐PS and two glass transition temperatures were observed in the DSC curve of PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA). The presence of PSF in PSF‐b‐PS or PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA) was found to improve thermal stabilities. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
