Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005  相似文献

In order to prepare well-defined pH-sensitive block copolymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD), we synthesized a pH-sensitive block copolymer via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of sulfamethazine methacrylate monomer (SM) and amphiphilic diblock copolymers by the ring-opening polymerization of d,l-lactide/?-caprolactone (LA/CL), and their sol-gel phase transition was investigated. SM, which is a derivative of sulfonamide, was used as a pH responsive moiety, while PCLA-PEG-PCLA was used as a biodegradable, as well as a temperature sensitive one, amphiphilic triblock copolymer. The pentablock copolymer, OSM-PCLA-PEG-PCLA-OSM, was synthesized using Br-PCLA-PEG-PCLA-Br as an ATRP macroinitiator. The number average molecular weights of SM were controlled by adjusting the monomer/initiator feed ratio. The macroinitiator was synthesized by the coupling of 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide with PCLA-PEG-PCLA in the presence of triethyl amine catalyst in dichloromethane. The resultant block copolymer shows a narrow polydispersity. The block copolymer solution shows a sol-gel transition in response to a slight pH change in the range of 7.2-8.0. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and NMR were used for the characterization of the polymers that were synthesized.  相似文献

This article reports on a facile route for the preparation of methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate graft copolymers via a combination of catalytic olefin copolymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The chemistry first involved a transforming process from ethylene/allylbenzene copolymers to a polyolefin multifunctional macroinitiator with pendant sulfonyl chloride groups. The key to the success of the graft copolymerization was ascribed to a fast exchange rate between the dormant species and active radical species by optimization of the various experimental parameters. Polyolefin‐g‐poly(methyl methacrylate) and polyolefin‐g‐poly(methyl acrylate) graft copolymers with controlled architecture and various graft lengths were, thus, successfully prepared under dilute ATRP conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The combination of radical‐promoted cationic polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click chemistry was employed for the efficient preparation of poly(cyclohexene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PCHO‐b‐PSt). Alkyne end‐functionalized poly(cyclohexene oxide) (PCHO‐alkyne) was prepared by radical‐promoted cationic polymerization of cyclohexene oxide monomer in the presence of 1,2‐diphenyl‐2‐(2‐propynyloxy)‐1‐ethanone (B‐alkyne) and an onium salt, namely 1‐ethoxy‐2‐methylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate, as the initiating system. The B‐alkyne compound was synthesized using benzoin photoinitiator and propargyl bromide. Well‐defined bromine‐terminated polystyrene (PSt‐Br) was prepared by ATRP using 2‐oxo‐1,2‐diphenylethyl‐2‐bromopropanoate as initiator. Subsequently, the bromine chain end of PSt‐Br was converted to an azide group to obtain PSt‐N3 by a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction. Then the coupling reaction between the azide end group in PSt‐N3 and PCHO‐alkyne was performed with Cu(I) catalysis in order to obtain the PCHO‐b‐PSt block copolymer. The structures of all polymers were determined. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization in bulk and in various solvents with a difunctional PEO macroinitiator and a Cu(I)X/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system at 85°C where X=Cl or Br. The polymerization proceeded via controlled/living process, and the molecular weights of the obtained block copolymers increased linearly with monomer conversion. In the process, the polydispersity decreased and finally reached a value of less than 1.3. The polymerization followed first‐order kinetics with respect to monomer concentration, and increases in the ethylene oxide repeating units or chain length in the macroinitiator decreased the rate of polymerization. The rate of polymerization of MMA with the PEO chloro macroinitiator and CuCl proceeded at approximately half the rate of bromo analogs. A faster rate of polymerization and controlled molecular weights with lower polydispersities were observed in bulk polymerization compared with polar and nonpolar solvent systems. In the bulk polymerization, the number‐average molecular weight by gel permeation chromatography (Mn,GPC) values were very close to the theoretical line, whereas lower than the theoretical line were observed in solution polymerizations. The macroinitiator and their block copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, thermogravimetry (TG)/differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). TG/DTA studies of the homo and block copolymers showed two‐step and multistep decomposition patterns. The DSC thermograms exhibited two glass‐transition temperatures at ?17.7 and 92°C for the PEO and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blocks, respectively, which indicated that microphase separation between the PEO and PMMA domains. SEM studies indicated a fine dispersion of PEO in the PMMA matrix. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 97: 989–1000, 2005  相似文献

A polystyrene (PS)‐b‐polylactide (PLA) block copolymer was prepared from the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and ring‐opening polymerization with commercially available 2,2,2‐tribromoethanol as a dual initiator in a sequential two‐step procedure. Hydroxyl‐terminated polystyrene (PS‐OH)s with various molecular weights were first prepared with polydispersity indices lower than 1.3; these provided valuable macroinitiators for the polymerization of D,L ‐lactide. A block copolymer with a composition allowing the formation of hexagonally packed PLA cylinders in a PS matrix was then obtained. The PS‐b‐PLA thin films revealed, after vapor solvent annealing, a hexagonally packed organization of the PLA cylinders, which was oriented perpendicularly to the surface of the film. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new graft copolymers poly(aryl ether sulfone)‐graft‐polystyrene (PSF‐g‐PS) and poly(aryl ether sulfone)‐graft‐[polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate)] (PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA)) were successfully prepared via atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) catalyzed by FeCl2/isophthalic acid in N,N‐dimethyl formamide. The products were characterized by GPC, DSC, IR, TGA and NMR. The characterization data indicated that the graft copolymerization was accomplished via conventional ATRP mechanism. The effect of chloride content of the macroinitiator on the graft copolymerization was investigated. Only one glass transition temperature (Tg) was detected by DSC for the graft copolymer PSF‐g‐PS and two glass transition temperatures were observed in the DSC curve of PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA). The presence of PSF in PSF‐b‐PS or PSF‐g‐(PS‐b‐PMMA) was found to improve thermal stabilities. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) monochloro macroinitiators or PEO telechelic macroinitiators (Cl‐PEO‐Cl) were prepared from monohydroxyfunctional or dihydroxyfunctional PEO and 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. These macroinitiators were applied to the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene (S). The polymerization was carried out in bulk at 140°C and catalyzed by Copper(I) chloride (CuCl) in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine (bipy) ligand (CuCl/bipy). The amphiphilic copolymers were either A‐B diblock or A‐B‐A triblock type, where A block is polystyrene (PS) and B block is PEO. The living nature of the polymerizations leads to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (1.072 < Mw/Mn < 1.392) for most of the macroinitiators synthesized. The macroinitiator itself and the corresponding block copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and SEC analysis. By adjusting the content of the PEO blocks it was possible to prepare water‐soluble/dispersible block copolymers. The obtained block copolymers were used to control paper surface characteristics by surface treatment with small amount of chemicals. The printability of the treated paper was evaluated with polarity factors, liquid absorption measurements, and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. From our study, it is observed that the chain length of the hydrophilic block and the amount of hydrophobic block play an important role in modification of the paper surface. Among all of block copolymers synthesized, the PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS containing 10 wt % PS was found to retard water absorption considerably. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface modifier 3‐((4‐hydroxybutoxy)dimethylsilyl)propyl methacrylate (CD), which contains a double bond and a hydroxyl group, was synthesized through a coupling reaction of 1,4‐butanediol and (3‐methacryloxypropyl)dimethylchlorosilane. Subsequently, graphene oxide (GO) was functionalized with different amounts of CD from its edge carboxyl groups. Then, grafting through atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of various amounts of the edge‐functionalized GO was carried out to evaluate the effect of graphene loading along with graft density. A peak at 3.8 ppm in the 1H NMR spectrum of CD associated with the methylene adjacent to the Si–O group indicated a successful coupling reaction. Attachment of CD on the edges of GO was evaluated using X‐ray photoelectron and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. Expansion of GO interlayer spacing by functionalization was evaluated using X‐ray diffraction. The ordered and disordered crystal structure of carbon was studied using Raman spectroscopy. The close ID/IG values for GO and various kinds of functionalized graphenes show the preserved graphitic crystallite size. Relaxation behaviour of polystyrene chains in the presence of graphene nanoplatelets and also the effect of graft content on chain confinement were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. High‐graft‐density nanocomposites show higher glass transition temperatures. Morphology of graphene nanoplatelets was studied using scanning electron and transmission electron microscopies. The flat and smooth morphology of graphene nanoplatelets is disturbed and also the transparency of the nanoplatelets decreases during the oxidation and functionalization processes. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

End-functional polystyrenes with an N,N-diethyldithiocarbamyl group were prepared by the photopolymerization of styrene with novel diethyldithiocarbamate derivatives as photoiniferters. Under ultraviolet light, the end-functional polymers could initiate a second monomer to polymerize and form block copolymers, such as polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene-b-poly(vinyl acetate), and polystyrene-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate). According to end group analysis and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, AB-type block copolymers were produced. The glass transition temperature and thermal stability of the block copolymers were investigated by means of thermal analysis. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. BACKGROUND: The surface of a substrate which comprises a fibrous material is brought into contact with a type of amphiphilic block copolymer which comprises hydrophilic/hydrophobic polymeric blocks. These amphiphilic copolymers have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The atom transfer radical polymerization of poly(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PFS‐b‐PEO) copolymers (di‐ and triblock structures) with various ranges of PEO molecular weights was initiated by a PEO chloro‐telechelic macroinitiator. The polymerization, carried out in bulk and catalysed by copper(I) chloride in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine ligand, led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock and A–B amphiphilic diblock structures. RESULTS: With most of the macroinitiators, the living nature of the polymerizations led to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (1.09 < Mw/Mn < 1.33) and well‐controlled molecular structures. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through adjustment of the PEO block content (>90 wt%). Of all the block copolymers synthesized, PFS‐b‐PEO(10k)‐b‐PFS containing 10 wt% PFS was found to retard water absorption considerably. CONCLUSION: The printability of paper treated with the copolymers was evaluated with contact angle measurements and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. Pentaerythritol (PT) was converted into four‐arm initiator pentaerythritol tetrakis(2‐chloropropionyl) (PT‐Cl) via reaction with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride. Uniform (monodisperse) star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were prepared by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene, using PT‐Cl/CuCl/bpy (bpy is 2,2′‐dipyridyl) as the initiating system. The structures of PT‐Cl and polymer were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The morphology, size and size distribution of the star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and photon correlation spectroscopy. It was found that the average diameters of star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were smaller than 100 nm (30–90 nm) and monodisperse; moreover, the particle size could be controlled by the monomer/initiator ratio and the surfactant concentration. The average hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the nanoparticles increased gradually on increasing the ratio of styrene to PT‐Cl and decreased on enhancing the surfactant concentration or increasing the catalyst concentration. The solution atom‐transfer radical copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate in butyl acetate at 110 °C in the presence of Cu(II) bromide and 2,2′‐bipyride was investigated. Polystyrene was polymerized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization using benzyl bromide as initiator and MMA was then added to the system. Block copolymers were formed when MMA was added at ≤90% styrene conversion. Molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn) of the block copolymers were ≤1.5. The possibility of end‐capping the polystyrene precursor as a means of improving its initiating efficiency towards MMA was also investigated but did not improve the system. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A combination of coordination polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was applied to a novel synthesis of rod–brush block copolymers. The procedure included the following steps: (1) the monoesterification reaction of ethylene glycol with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) yielded the bifunctional initiator monobromobutyryloxy ethylene glycol and (2) a trichlorocyclopentadienyl titanium (CpTiCl3; bifunctional initiator) catalyst was prepared from a mixture of CpTiCl3 and bifunctional initiator. The coordination polymerization of n-butyl isocyanate initiated by such a catalyst provided a well-defined macroinitiator, poly(n-butyl isocyanate)–bromine (PBIC–Br). (3) The ATRP method of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate initiated by PBIC–Br provided rod [poly(n-butyl isocyanate) (PBIC)]–coil [poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)] block copolymers with a CuCl/CuCl2/2,2′-bipyridyl catalyst. (4) The esterfication of PBIC-block-PHEMA with BIBB yielded a block-type macroinitiator, and (5) ATRP of methyl methacrylate with a block-type macroinitiator provided rod–brush block copolymers. We found from the solution properties that such rod–brush block copolymers formed nanostructured macromolecules in solution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene (PEO–PSt) block copolymers were prepared by radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of iodoacetate—terminated PEO (PEO‐I) as a macromolecular chain‐transfer agent. PEO‐I was synthesized by successively converting the OH end‐group of α‐methoxy ω‐hydroxy PEO to chloroacetate and then to the iodoacetate. The chain‐transfer constant of PEO‐I was estimated from the rate of consumption of the transfer agent versus the rate of consumption of the monomer (Ctr, PEO‐I = 0.23). Due to the involvement of degenerative transfer, styrene polymerization in the presence of PEO‐I displayed some of the characteristics of a controlled/‘living’ process, namely an increase in the molecular weight and decrease of polydispersity with monomer conversion. However, because of the slow consumption of PEO‐I due to its low chain‐transfer constant, this process was not a fully controlled one, as indicated by the polydispersity being higher than in a controlled polymerization process (1.65 versus < 1.5). The formation of PEO–PSt block copolymers was confirmed by the use of size‐exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The synthesis of aromatic carboxyl functionalized polymers by atom transfer radical polymerization is described. The α‐bromo‐p‐toluic acid ( 1 ) initiated polymerization of styrene in the presence of copper(I) bromide and 2,2′‐bipyridyl affords quantitative yields of the corresponding aromatic carboxyl functionalized polystyrene ( 2 ). Polymerization proceeded via a controlled free radical process to afford quantitative yields of the corresponding aromatic carboxyl functionalized polymers with predictable molecular weights (Mn = 1600–25 900 g mol−1), narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw /Mn = 1.1–1.40) and an initiator efficiency above 0.87. The polymerization process was monitored by gas chromatographic analysis. The functionalized polymers were characterized by thin layer chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, spectroscopy, potentiometry and elemental analysis. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
