Self-report scales assessing relationship-specific incentive and threat sensitivity were created. Initial tests of factor structure and associations with relationship quality were conducted in a sample of persons in intimate relationships (Study 1). Associations with conceptually related measures were examined to determine convergent and discriminant validity in a sample of dating couples (Study 2). Cross-validation of the factor structure was established in engaged couples (Study 3) and in newlywed couples (Study 4). In Study 4, couples also engaged in a laboratory-based threat task (discussion about a significant marital problem) and incentive task (discussion about loving aspects of the partner/marriage). Relationship incentive sensitivity predicted higher positive affect after the incentive task for both husbands and wives. Relationship threat sensitivity predicted greater anxiety in response to the threat laboratory task for wives only. Implications of approach and avoidance motivations in close relationship processes and outcomes are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Prevention of intimate partner violence on college campuses includes programs designed to change attitudes, and hence, a scale that assesses such attitudes is needed. Study 1 (N = 859) cross validates the factor structure of the Intimate Partner Violence Attitude Scale-Revised using exploratory factor analysis and presents initial validity data on the scale. In Study 2 (N = 687), the obtained three-factor structure (Abuse, Control, Violence) is tested using confirmatory factor analysis, and it is shown to be concurrently related to assault in romantic relationships and to predict psychological aggression 14 weeks later. The findings are discussed in the context of how understanding and modifying attitudes assessed by the Intimate Partner Violence Attitude Scale-Revised may improve interventions aimed at reducing intimate partner violence. Anxiety sensitivity (i.e., the disposition to react to autonomic arousal with fear) has taken a central role in recent conceptualizations of anxiety. However, questions regarding the dimensional nature of anxiety sensitivity remain. In particular, the factor structure of anxiety sensitivity is unexplored in nonadult populations. The factor structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index for Children (ASIC) was examined in three studies. Study 1 (N = 95) used a sample of school children in Grades 4-8 to investigate the reliability of items and factor structure. Items with weak psychometric properties were eliminated, and subsequent analyses revealed that the ASIC was best viewed as a hierarchical scale with a higher order factor (Anxiety Sensitivity) and two first-order factors (Fear of Physiological Arousal and Fear of Mental Catastrophe). Study 2 (N = 112) and Study 3 (N = 144) used more distressed samples of youngsters, and they also found the ASIC to be a hierarchical scale. These findings add a developmental perspective to the Anxiety Sensitivity Index factor analytic discussion and are highly consistent with emergent thinking in the adult anxiety sensitivity literature.  相似文献

Identified and developed a scale to assess problematic interpersonal situations among urban adolescents. In Study 1, problematic situations were identified by focus groups of 6th graders (N = 43). Their relevance was verified in Study 2 by assessing their reported frequency and difficulty in a sample of 6th graders (N = 457) that included mostly African American youth from low-income families. Scales representing 3 dimensions, peer provocation, perceived injustice, and environmental stressors were verified by confirmatory factor analyses. In Study 3, the internal consistency and structure of these scales were cross-validated in a sample of 7th graders (N = 459). All 3 scales were correlated with self-reported violent behavior, drug use, and anxiety and uniquely accounted for 11% to 19% of the variance. These findings have implications for identifying youth at risk for emotional and behavioral problems and for designing more relevant interventions.  相似文献

This article reports on 2 studies designed to develop and validate a set of measures for use in evaluating processes of child and family interventions. In Study 1 responses from 187 families attending an outpatient clinic for child behavior problems were factor analyzed to identify scales, consistent across sources: Alliance (Satisfactory Relationship with Interventionist and Program Satisfaction), Parenting Skill Attainment, Child Cooperation During Session, Child Prosocial Behavior, and Child Aggressive Behavior. Study 2 focused on patterns of scale scores among 78 families taking part in a 22-week preventive intervention designed to affect family relationships, parenting, and child antisocial and prosocial behaviors. The factor structure identified in Study 1 was replicated. Scale construct validity was demonstrated through across-source convergence, sensitivity to intervention change, and ability to discriminate individual differences. Path analysis validated the scales' utility in explaining key aspects of the intervention process. Implications for evaluating processes in family interventions are discussed. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationships between plasma L-arginine concentrations and the severity of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) or systemic blood pressure in premature infants. DESIGN: Prospective, observational study. SETTING: Neonatal intensive care, tertiary referral hospital. SUBJECTS: Fifty-three premature infants. INTERVENTIONS: We measured arginine and nutritional intake, plasma arginine concentration, total amino acid concentrations, and blood pressure on days 3, 7, 14, and 21 of life. In 33 infants who received assisted ventilation, oxygenation index could be calculated to reflect the severity of RDS. The relationships between plasma arginine and oxygenation index or blood pressure were analyzed using multiple linear regression. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: On day 3, plasma arginine concentrations were decreased compared with normal published values. Arginine concentrations increased with the day of life of measurement (p < .001) and with arginine intake (p < .001). After adjusting for arginine intake and day of life, an inverse relationship was found between oxygenation index and plasma arginine concentrations: (p = .025). No similar relationship was found between oxygenation index and the concentration of total amino acids. A weak positive relationship was found between plasma arginine concentration and systemic blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: Increments in the oxygenation index, reflective of an increased severity of RDS, are associated with a decrease in plasma arginine concentration. This finding may reflect arginine consumption by the nitric oxide synthase pathway in the lungs of premature infants with RDS, or may be explained by increased arginine catabolism. The lack of a similar relationship between total plasma amino acids and oxygenation index supports the first interpretation.  相似文献

In 2 studies, the present research tested the phenomenology and content of autobiographical memory as distinct mediators between attachment avoidance and anxiety and depressive symptoms. In Study 1, participants (N = 454) completed measures of attachment and depressive symptoms in 1 session and retrieved and rated 2 self-defining memories of romantic relationships in a separate session. In Study 2, participants (N = 534) were primed with attachment security, attachment insecurity, or a control prime and then retrieved and rated a self-defining relationship memory. Memory phenomenology, specifically memory coherence and emotional intensity, mediated the association between attachment avoidance and depressive symptoms, whereas the negative affective content of the memory mediated the association between attachment anxiety and depressive symptoms. Priming attachment security led to retrieval of a more coherent relationship memory, whereas insecurity led to the retrieval of a more incoherent relationship memory. Discussion focuses on the construction and recollection of memories as underlying mechanisms of adult attachment and psychological distress, the importance of memory coherence, and the implications for counseling research and practice. This study explored marital status, social support processes, and psychological distress among women at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer who were anticipating genetic testing. In addition to substantive findings, it presents a means of using nonsense coding (J. Cohen & P. Cohen, 1983) to include unmarried persons in regression analyses examining the importance of marital support. These women had mobilized high levels of social support. Married and unmarried women did not differ in distress, but women had to have more satisfying marriages than average to be equivalent to unmarried women. For the married women, husbands were more involved and more influential in decision making than female relatives, even in distressed marriages. Negativity from close relationships, particularly the spouse, had more influence on these women's well-being than did positive involvement. The authors' findings suggest that counseling and education programs need to accommodate the key role that husbands have in decision making concerning genetic testing for risk of breast cancer. Four studies were conducted to develop and validate the Coping With Discrimination Scale (CDS). In Study 1, an exploratory factor analysis (N = 328) identified 5 factors: Education/Advocacy, Internalization, Drug and Alcohol Use, Resistance, and Detachment, with internal consistency reliability estimates ranging from .72 to .90. In Study 2, a confirmatory factor analysis (N = 328) provided cross-validation of the 5-factor model as well as evidence for validity of the scale. The validity evidence was similar across racial groups and for males and females. In Study 3, the estimated 2-week test–retest reliabilities (N = 53) were between .48 and .85 for the 5 factors. Education/Advocacy, Internalization, Drug and Alcohol Use, and Detachment were positively associated with active coping, self-blame, substance use, and behavioral disengagement, respectively, providing further support for validity of the CDS. Finally, incremental validity evidence was obtained in Study 4 (N = 220), where it was shown that the CDS explained variance in outcome variables (i.e., depression, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and ethnic identity) that could not be explained by general coping strategies. Although perceived health risk plays a prominent role in theories of health behavior, its empirical role in risk taking is less clear. In Study 1 (N = 129), 2 measures of drivers' risk-taking behavior were found to be unrelated to self-estimates of accident concern but to be related to self-ratings of driving skill and the perceived thrill of driving. In Study 2 (N = 405), out of a wide range of potential influences, accident concern had the weakest relationship with risk taking. The authors concluded that although health risk is a key feature in many theories of health behavior and a central focus for researchers and policy makers, it may not be such a prominent factor for those actually taking the risk. Adults who report having had high-quality relationships with their parents during childhood have better overall mental health and are at decreased risk for mental disorders compared with those who report low parental relationship quality. Researchers have predominantly focused on the relationship with the mother, oftentimes excluding the unique role that fathers may play in the long-term development of their offspring. The current study examined the unique associations of recalled childhood experiences of mother–child and father–child relationship quality with daily emotional experiences and stress processes in adulthood. Men and women (N = 912, ages 25–74) retrospectively reported the quality of their childhood relationships with their mother and father. Later, they reported their daily psychological distress and stressor exposure every night over 8 consecutive evenings. Results indicate that mother–child relationship quality was related to lower levels of daily psychological distress. The quality of both mother–child and father–child relationships was related to stressor exposure, but only father–son relationship quality was related to lower levels of emotional reactivity to stressors during adulthood. Psychosocial risks in the workplace have the potential for causing psychological and social harm that contributes toward the mental health disability burden. Psychosocial risks are influenced by macrolevel factors such as the psychosocial safety climate within the organization. This paper concerns the development and evaluation of a short instrument to measure psychosocial safety climate (PSC). PSC is conceived as an up-stream resource, and concerns senior management values and attitudes toward care and practices in relation to employee psychosocial well being. In a pilot sample (N = 78) we used an iterative procedure incorporating regression analysis to reduce 26 items down to a parsimonious 12 item, four-factor scale (PSC-12). The PSC-12 was then assessed using confirmatory factor analysis and the scale validated in a second representative sample of Australian workers (N = 398). The PSC-12 showed expected relationships with psychosocial risk factors (e.g., job demands, job resources), worker engagement and health, and work related outcomes (e.g., job satisfaction). We further confirmed the invariance of the factor coefficients and factor covariance across the two multioccupational samples using multigroup analysis. In a third organizational study (N = 16 teams, 106 health care workers) we found that PSC showed group like psychometric properties, and team level PSC was associated with individual level psychological distress and work engagement. PSC showed incremental value beyond a physical safety measure. The results provide initial indications that the PSC-12 can be used across a range of occupations, and within organizations. The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule for Children (PANAS-C) is a 27-item youth-report measure of positive affectivity and negative affectivity. Using 2 large school-age youth samples (clinic-referred sample: N = 662; school-based sample: N = 911), in the present study, we thoroughly examined the structure of the PANAS-C NA and PA scales and fit a bifactor model to the PANAS-C NA items. Our exploratory factor analytic results demonstrated that negative affectivity is comprised of 2 main components—NA: Fear and NA: Distress—specifically among older youth. A bifactor model also evidenced the best model fit relative to a unidimensional and second-order factor structure of the PANAS-C NA items. The NA: Fear group factor evidenced significant correspondence with external criterion measures of anxiety. However, the original PANAS-C NA scale evidenced equal (and in some cases greater) correspondence with criterion measures of anxiety. We thus recommend continued usage and interpretation of the full PANAS-C NA scale despite the identification of the fear and distress group factors underlying general negative affectivity. The identification of these fear and distress group factors nonetheless suggest that negative affectivity may be comprised largely of a fear and distress component among older youth. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to better understanding the structure of psychopathology across childhood development and informing the development of future treatments of negative emotions. The marital relationship rarely exists in isolation and yet few studies have examined the multiple relationships experienced by most married people. This study used the Convoy Model of Social Relations to examine patterns of multiple relationships and well-being among men and women ages 22 to 79 years (N = 654). Cluster analyses identified profiles of relationship quality among people with spouse, family (children, mother, father), and a best friend (N = 451) and those married with family but no best friend (N = 202). Relationship profiles differed in quality and by gender, race, and age. Among people with best friends, having at least 2 high quality relations, not necessarily with a spouse, is associated with greater well-being. In contrast, among people without best friends, the spousal relation appears to be particularly important for well-being. Although family relationships (e.g., spouse) are important for well-being, interventions should consider the composition and quality of social networks to determine which relationships may need improvement. The factor structure of the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18; L. R. Derogatis, 2000) was investigated in a sample of adult survivors of childhood cancer enrolled in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS; N = 8,945). An exploratory factor analysis with a randomly chosen subsample supported a 3-factor structure closely corresponding to the 3 BSI-18 subscales: Depression, Anxiety, and Somatization. Confirmatory factor analysis with structural equation modeling validated this 3-dimensional structure in a separate subsample, though an alternative 4-factor model also fit the data. Analysis of the 3-factor model showed consistent fit in male and female participants. Compared with available community-based norms, survivors reported fewer symptoms of psychological distress. Together, results support the hypothesized 3-dimensional structure of the BSI-18 and indicate the measure may be useful in assessing psychological distress in this growing population of cancer survivors. The clinical importance of relationship discord was examined through evaluating the association between relationship discord and multiple measures of impairment and psychological distress in a population-based sample of married and cohabiting adults (N = 2,677). In comparison to people that were not in discordant relationships, individuals in discordant relationships reported greater social role impairment with relatives and friends and greater work role impairment. They also reported higher levels of general distress and poorer perceived health and were more likely to report suicide ideation. With the exception of suicide ideation, the associations between relationship discord and impairment and psychological distress remained significant when controlling for current mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders, suggesting that relationship discord is incrementally related to impairment and psychological distress over and above the effects of psychiatric disorders. Objective: Relationship maintenance strategies help to ensure the continuation of valued relationships by keeping them at a certain level of intimacy. This study evaluated how lung cancer patients' and spouses' efforts to maintain their relationships affected their psychological and marital adjustment over time. Design: Psychosocial questionnaires were administered within 1 month of lung cancer treatment initiation (baseline) and 3 and 6 months later to 158 lung cancer patients and their spouses. Main Outcome Measures: Study outcomes were global severity index scores on the Brief Symptom Inventory, and total scores on the Dyadic Adjustment Scale. Results: Multilevel modeling analyses using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model showed that, regardless of gender or social role (i.e., patient or spouse), individuals who engaged in the strategies of positivity, networks, and shared tasks reported less distress at baseline than other participants. Over time, the effects of providing more assurances and experiencing a partner's increased reliance on social networks differed: patient distress was exacerbated, and spouse distress was alleviated. Couples where both partners engaged in more frequent maintenance behaviors reported greater dyadic adjustment at baseline and over time. Conclusion: For couples coping with lung cancer, the initial treatment period may be an important time that sets the tone for future spousal interactions. Engaging in relationship maintenance during this stressful time may help mold more resilient relationships and facilitate adjustment as the disease progresses. BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) due to surfactant deficiency remains a cause of considerable mortality in the neonatal period. METHODS: In a retrospective study we analysed the records of 1109 premature newborns with a birth weight below 1500 g that were treated on our unit. RDS was assumed if the infants needed mechanical ventilation with oxygen supplementation and the typical radiological signs were present on chest x-ray. RESULTS: No changes in the incidence of RDS were found during the period of observation. Below 29 weeks gestational age 90% of infants suffered from RDS (55% severe RDS grade III or IV). The incidence was 75% (grade III or IV: 32%) for infants born at 29 and 30 weeks, 48% (grade III or IV: 15%) at 31 and 32 weeks and 33% (grade III or IV: 6%) for neonates born at 33 weeks of gestation. Using a logistic regression analysis model the following parameters were found to increase the risk for RDS significantly (p < 0.05): no prenatal steroid treatment, Cesarean section, male gender, APGAR at 5 min < 7, metabolic acidosis (base excess < or = -6 mval) and rectal temperature < 36 degrees C on admission. Following gestosis, insufficiency of the placenta and premature rupture of membranes a decrease in the incidence of RDS was observed. CONCLUSION: We conclude that although some risk factors for RDS will be difficult to exclude (e.g. maternal disease, gender) the incidence and severity of RDS can be reduced by measures like maternal antenatal steroid treatment. Perinatal asphyxia (low APGAR values and/or acidosis) and hypothermia should be avoided, as these conditions increase the relative risk for developing RDS.  相似文献

The authors examined the differential effects of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)—a condition associated with elevated risk for neonatal hypoxia-ischemia—on the cognitive development of the two sexes. The authors also attempted toe establish whether the severity of respiratory distress is linked to cognitive outcome. Findings revealed an appreciable female advantage in cognitive recovery from RDS, yet the association between severity of RDS and outcome did not reach conventional statistical significance level. The sex effect on intelligence test performance was significantly greater for nonverbal subtests than for verbal ones. These results augment earlier findings of sex differences in cognitive recovery from perinatal intracranial hemorrhage. The current investigation also extends these results to a population of children at neonatal hypoxic risk for whom early brain injury was excluded on the basis of neonatal cranial ultrasound findings. We developed a model of the relationships among aggressive norms, abusive supervision, psychological distress, family undermining, and supervisor-directed deviance. We tested the model in 2 studies using multisource data: a 3-wave investigation of 184 full-time employees (Study 1) and a 2-wave investigation of 188 restaurant workers (Study 2). Results revealed that (a) abusive supervision mediated the relationship between aggressive norms and psychological distress, (b) psychological distress mediated the effects of abusive supervision on spouse undermining, (c) abusive supervision had a direct positive relationship with supervisor-directed deviance, (d) the positive relationship between psychological distress and spouse undermining was stronger for men as opposed to women, and (e) employees engaged in relationship-oriented occupations reported greater levels of abusive supervision and psychological distress. Implications for theory and practice are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
