In this paper we deal with the windy rural postman problem. This problem generalizes several important arc routing problems and has interesting real-life applications. Here, we present several heuristics whose study has lead to the design of a scatter search algorithm for the windy rural postman problem. Extensive computational experiments over different sets of instances, with sizes up to 988 nodes and 3952 edges, are also presented.  相似文献

Path-distance heuristics for the Steiner problem in undirected networks   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
An integrative overview of the algorithmic characteristics of three well-known polynomialtime heuristics for the undirected Steiner minimum tree problem:shortest path heuristic (SPH),distance network heuristic (DNH), andaverage distance heuristic (ADH) is given. The performance of thesesingle-pass heuristics (and some variants) is compared and contrasted with several heuristics based onrepetitive applications of the SPH. It is shown that two of these repetitive SPH variants generate solutions that in general are better than solutions obtained by any single-pass heuristic. The worst-case time complexity of the two new variants isO(pn 3) andO(p 3 n 2), while the worst-case time complexity of the SPH, DNH, and ADH is respectivelyO(pn 2),O(m + n logn), andO(n 3) wherep is the number of vertices to be spanned,n is the total number of vertices, andm is the total number of edges. However, use of few simple tests is shown to provide large reductions of problem instances (both in terms of vertices and in term of edges). As a consequence, a substantial speed-up is obtained so that the repetitive variants are also competitive with respect to running times.  相似文献

The most efficient approximate procedures so far for the flowshop scheduling problem with makespan objective – i.e. the NEH heuristic and the iterated greedy algorithm – are based on constructing a sequence by iteratively inserting, one by one, the non-scheduled jobs into all positions of an existing subsequence, and then, among the so obtained subsequences, selecting the one yielding the lowest (partial) makespan. This procedure usually causes a high number of ties (different subsequences with the same best partial makespan) that must be broken via a tie-breaking mechanism. The particular tie-breaking mechanism employed is known to have a great influence in the performance of the NEH, therefore different procedures have been proposed in the literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, no tie-breaking mechanism has been proposed for the iterated greedy. In our paper, we present a new tie-breaking mechanism based on an estimation of the idle times of the different subsequences in order to pick the one with the lowest value of the estimation. The computational experiments carried out show that this mechanism outperforms the existing ones both for the NEH and the iterated greedy for different CPU times. Furthermore, embedding the proposed tie-breaking mechanism into the iterated greedy provides the most efficient heuristic for the problem so far.  相似文献

In today's economy, manufacturing plants must be able to operate efficiently and respond quickly to changes in product mix and demand. Therefore, this paper considers the problem of arranging and rearranging (when there are changes between the flows of materials between departments) manufacturing facilities such that the sum of the material handling and rearrangement costs is minimized. This problem is known as the dynamic facility layout problem (DFLP). In this paper, two simulated annealing (SA) heuristics are developed for the DFLP. The first SA heuristic (SA I) is a direct adaptation of SA to the DFLP. The second SA heuristic (SA II) is the same as SA I with a look-ahead/look-back strategy added. To test the performance of the heuristics, a data set taken from the literature is used in the analysis. The results obtained show that the proposed heuristics are very effective for the dynamic facility layout problem.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the single machine scheduling problem with weighted quadratic tardiness costs. Several efficient dispatching rules are proposed. These include existing heuristics for the linear problem, as well as procedures suitably adapted to the quadratic objective function. Also, both forward and backward scheduling procedures are considered.The computational results show that the heuristics that specifically take into account the quadratic objective significantly outperform their linear counterparts. Also, the backward scheduling approach proves to be superior, and the difference in performance is even more noticeable for the harder instances.The best of the backward scheduling heuristics is both quite efficient and effective. Indeed, this procedure can quickly generate a schedule even for large instances. Also, its relative deviation from the optimum is usually rather low, and it performs adequately even for the more difficult instances.  相似文献

Although theLongest Common Subsequence (LCS)Problem has been studied by many researchers for years, heuristic methods have not been investigated before. In this paper we present a simple heuristic which guarantees to return a common subsequence of length at least 1/s that of the longest wheres is the number of different symbols in the input strings. Furthermore, we generalize the idea to several classes of heuristic algorithms. Surprisingly, we find that no other heuristic in these classes outperforms this simple algorithm. In other words, we show that any heuristic which uses only global information, such as number of symbol occurrences, might return a common subsequence as short as 1/s of the length of the longest. This paper describes a constructive heuristic for the well-known Undirected Rural Postman Problem. At each iteration, the procedure inserts a connected component of the required edges and performs a local postoptimization. Computational results on a set of benchmark instances with up to 350 vertices show that the proposed procedure is competitive with the classical Frederickson procedure. Its use is recommended when a high-quality solution is needed in a short amount of time (e.g., in laser plotter applications).  相似文献

Since Johnson׳s seminal paper in 1954, scheduling jobs in a permutation flowshop has been receiving the attention of hundreds of practitioners and researchers, being one of the most studied topics in the Operations Research literature. Among the different objectives that can be considered, minimising the total tardiness (i.e. the sum of the surplus of the completion time of each job over its due date) is regarded as a key objective for manufacturing companies, as it entails the fulfilment of the due dates committed to customers. Since this problem is known to be NP-hard, most research has focused on proposing approximate procedures to solve it in reasonable computation times. Particularly, several constructive heuristics have been proposed, with NEHedd being the most efficient one, serving also to provide an initial solution for more elaborate approximate procedures. In this paper, we first analyse in detail the decision problem depending on the generation of the due dates of the jobs, and discuss the similarities with different related decision problems. In addition, for the most characteristic tardiness scenario, the analysis shows that a huge number of ties appear during the construction of the solutions done by the NEHedd heuristic, and that wisely breaking the ties greatly influences the quality of the final solution. Since no tie-breaking mechanism has been designed for this heuristic up to now, we propose several mechanisms that are exhaustively tested. The results show that some of them outperform the original NEHedd by about 25% while keeping the same computational requirements.  相似文献

The recursive Bayesian decision rule has been widely used in pattern classification. This paper presents two heuristics, power of discrimination and power of justification, for arranging the order of feature-extraction operations in the Recursive Bayesian decision rule. The heuristics predict the performance of each operation and select the best one as the next operation. The experimental result shows that these methods are very promising.  相似文献

This paper deals with the two-dimensional bin packing problem with conflicts (BPC-2D). Given a finite set of rectangular items, an unlimited number of rectangular bins and a conflict graph, the goal is to find a conflict-free packing of the items minimizing the number of bins used. In this paper, we propose a new framework based on a tree-decomposition for solving this problem. It proceeds by decomposing a BPC-2D instance into subproblems to be solved independently. Applying this decomposition method is not straightforward, since merging partial solutions is hard. Several heuristic strategies are proposed to make an effective use of the decomposition. Computational experiments show the practical effectiveness of our approach.  相似文献

In this paper we address the problem of scheduling jobs in a permutation flowshop with a just-in-time objective, i.e. the minimisation of the sum of total tardiness and total earliness. Since the problem is NP-hard, there are several approximate procedures available for the problem, although their performance largely depends on the due dates of the specific instance to be solved. After an in-depth analysis of the problem, different cases or sub-problems are identified and, by incorporating this knowledge, four heuristics are proposed: a fast constructive heuristic, and three different local search procedures that use the proposed constructive heuristic as initial solution.The proposed Prod. Type: FLPheuristics have been compared on an extensive set of instances with the best-so-far heuristic for the problem, as well as with adaptations of efficient heuristics for similar scheduling problems. The computational results show the excellent performance of the proposed algorithms. Finally, the positive impact of the efficient heuristics is evaluated by including them as seed sequences for one of the best metaheuristic for the problem.  相似文献

This paper addresses a novel distributed assembly permutation flowshop scheduling problem that has important applications in modern supply chains and manufacturing systems. The problem considers a number of identical factories, each one consisting of a flowshop for part-processing plus an assembly line for product-processing. The objective is to minimize the makespan. To suit the needs of different CPU time and solution quality, we present a mixed integer linear model, three constructive heuristics, two variable neighborhood search methods, and an iterated greedy algorithm. Important problem-specific knowledge is obtained to enhance the effectiveness of the algorithms. Accelerations for evaluating solutions are proposed to save computational efforts. The parameters and operators of the algorithms are calibrated and analyzed using a design of experiments. To prove the algorithms, we present a total of 16 adaptations of other well-known and recent heuristics, variable neighborhood search algorithms, and meta-heuristics for the problem and carry out a comprehensive set of computational and statistical experiments with a total of 810 instances. The results show that the proposed algorithms are very effective and efficient to solve the problem under consideration as they outperform the existing methods by a significant margin.  相似文献

Summary It has been shown that the design of deterministic programs can be formulated as the resolution of relational equations. Because relational calculi are not sufficiently structured, there are no algorithmic solutions to relational equations. In this paper, we formulate some heuristic solutions to these equations.Part of this work was carried out while the first and second author were at Laval University in Québec. We consider the variable cost and size bin packing problem, a generalization of the well-known bin packing problem, where a set of items must be packed into a set of heterogeneous bins characterized by possibly different volumes and fixed selection costs. The objective of the problem is to select bins to pack all items at minimum total bin-selection cost. The paper introduces lower bounds and heuristics for the problem, the latter integrating lower and upper bound techniques. Extensive numerical tests conducted on instances with up to 1000 items show the effectiveness of these methods in terms of computational effort and solution quality. We also provide a systematic numerical analysis of the impact on solution quality of the bin selection costs and the correlations between these and the bin volumes. The results show that these correlations matter and that solution methods that are un-biased toward particular correlation values perform better.  相似文献

To allow rural communities to evaluate possible future landscape scenarios, we have created a portable environment for landscape simulation (envisioning system). The goal of this system is to give communities the opportunity to plan their desired futures. Our system is designed for workshop environments and allows workshop attendees to explore and to interact with representations of virtual landscapes. We are using virtual reality technology to visualise the landscape representations, a geographic information system to allow participants to change the current landscape configuration, and mobile computing devices to allow the attendees to navigate in the virtual landscape, and give feedback and opinions on the landscape changes. Here, we describe the technology that implements the interaction between geographical information systems and real-time rendering needed to achieve real-time visualisation of landscape changes. To achieve this functionality we have programmed two software clients (a renderer and an ESRI ArcMap extension) and a server that handles message flow. The landscape has been divided into management units that each supports one land use type. Using the GIS interface, users can change the land uses associated to the units and the renderer will update the landscape correspondingly in real time.  相似文献

Given a set of timetabled tasks, the multi-depot vehicle scheduling problem consists of determining least-cost schedules for vehicles assigned to several depots such that each task is accomplished exactly once by a vehicle. In this paper, we propose to compare the performance of five different heuristics for this well-known problem, namely, a truncated branch-and-cut method, a Lagrangian heuristic, a truncated column generation method, a large neighborhood search heuristic using truncated column generation for neighborhood evaluation, and a tabu search heuristic. The first three methods are adaptations of existing methods, while the last two are new in the context of this problem. Computational results on randomly generated instances show that the column generation heuristic performs the best when enough computational time is available and stability is required, while the large neighborhood search method is the best alternative when looking for good quality solutions in relatively fast computational times.  相似文献

A family of code coverage-based heuristics for effective fault localization   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Locating faults in a program can be very time-consuming and arduous, and therefore, there is an increased demand for automated techniques that can assist in the fault localization process. In this paper a code coverage-based method with a family of heuristics is proposed in order to prioritize suspicious code according to its likelihood of containing program bugs. Highly suspicious code (i.e., code that is more likely to contain a bug) should be examined before code that is relatively less suspicious; and in this manner programmers can identify and repair faulty code more efficiently and effectively. We also address two important issues: first, how can each additional failed test case aid in locating program faults; and second, how can each additional successful test case help in locating program faults. We propose that with respect to a piece of code, the contribution of the first failed test case that executes it in computing its likelihood of containing a bug is larger than or equal to that of the second failed test case that executes it, which in turn is larger than or equal to that of the third failed test case that executes it, and so on. This principle is also applied to the contribution provided by successful test cases that execute the piece of code. A tool, χDebug, was implemented to automate the computation of the suspiciousness of the code and the subsequent prioritization of suspicious code for locating program faults. To validate our method case studies were performed on six sets of programs: Siemens suite, Unix suite, space, grep, gzip, and make. Data collected from the studies are supportive of the above claim and also suggest Heuristics III(a), (b) and (c) of our method can effectively reduce the effort spent on fault localization.  相似文献

In this work, a review and comprehensive evaluation of heuristics and metaheuristics for the m-machine flowshop scheduling problem with the objective of minimising total tardiness is presented. Published reviews about this objective usually deal with a single machine or parallel machines and no recent methods are compared. Moreover, the existing reviews do not use the same benchmark of instances and the results are difficult to reproduce and generalise. We have implemented a total of 40 different heuristics and metaheuristics and we have analysed their performance under the same benchmark of instances in order to make a global and fair comparison. In this comparison, we study from the classical priority rules to the most recent tabu search, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. In the evaluations we use the experimental design approach and careful statistical analyses to validate the effectiveness of the different methods tested. The results allow us to clearly identify the state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

This paper faces the problem of optimizing the wiring and the connections in a tactile skin for robots. The robotic skin is a device composed of a network of tactile sensors, whose wiring can be very complex: the control of this complexity is a key problem. In the considered robotic skin, skin elements are grouped into skin patches, which output tactile data that have to be read by a micro-controller. The logical connections between the sensors must be defined in order to route signals through the network. A finite set of micro-controllers is given and a set of constraints is imposed on the given assignment and routing. The considered problem has a combinatorial nature and it can be formulated as a Minimum Constrained Spanning Forest problem with costs on arcs that cannot be a priori defined as they are solution-dependent. The problem is NP-hard. The paper introduces a mathematical formulation and then proposes a Multi-Start Heuristic algorithm and an Ant Colony Optimization approach whose effectiveness is evaluated through experimental tests performed on both real and synthetically generated instances.  相似文献

Over the last two decades, evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have become a popular approach for solving water resources optimization problems. However, the issue of low computational efficiency limits their application to large, realistic problems. This paper uses the optimal design of water distribution systems (WDSs) as an example to illustrate how the efficiency of genetic algorithms (GAs) can be improved by using heuristic domain knowledge in the sampling of the initial population. A new heuristic procedure called the Prescreened Heuristic Sampling Method (PHSM) is proposed and tested on seven WDS cases studies of varying size. The EPANet input files for these case studies are provided as supplementary material. The performance of the PHSM is compared with that of another heuristic sampling method and two non-heuristic sampling methods. The results show that PHSM clearly performs best overall, both in terms of computational efficiency and the ability to find near-optimal solutions. In addition, the relative advantage of using the PHSM increases with network size.  相似文献
