Most numerical and experimental studies of the performance of vertical‐axis wind turbines have been conducted with the rotors in steady, and thus somewhat artificial, wind conditions—with the result that turbine aerodynamics, under varying wind conditions, are still poorly understood. The vorticity transport model has been used to investigate the aerodynamic performance and wake dynamics, both in steady and unsteady wind conditions, of three different vertical‐axis wind turbines: one with a straight‐bladed configuration, another with a curved‐bladed configuration and another with a helically twisted configuration. The turbines with non‐twisted blades are shown to be somewhat less efficient than the turbine with helically twisted blades when the rotors are operated at constant rotational speed in unsteady wind conditions. In steady wind conditions, the power coefficients that are produced by both the straight‐bladed and curved‐bladed turbines vary considerably within one rotor revolution because of the continuously varying angle of attack on the blades and, thus, the inherent unsteadiness in the blade aerodynamic loading. These variations are much larger, and thus far more significant, than those that are induced by the unsteadiness in the wind conditions. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Wind tunnel and numerical study of a small vertical axis wind turbine   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper presents a combined experimental and computational study into the aerodynamics and performance of a small scale vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). Wind tunnel tests were carried out to ascertain overall performance of the turbine and two- and three-dimensional unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were generated to help understand the aerodynamics of this performance.Wind tunnel performance results are presented for cases of different wind velocity, tip-speed ratio and solidity as well as rotor blade surface finish. It is shown experimentally that the surface roughness on the turbine rotor blades has a significant effect on performance. Below a critical wind speed (Reynolds number of 30,000) the performance of the turbine is degraded by a smooth rotor surface finish but above it, the turbine performance is enhanced by a smooth surface finish. Both two bladed and three bladed rotors were tested and a significant increase in performance coefficient is observed for the higher solidity rotors (three bladed rotors) over most of the operating range. Dynamic stalling behaviour and the resulting large and rapid changes in force coefficients and the rotor torque are shown to be the likely cause of changes to rotor pitch angle that occurred during early testing. This small change in pitch angle caused significant decreases in performance. The performance coefficient predicted by the two dimensional computational model is significantly higher than that of the experimental and the three-dimensional CFD model. The predictions show that the presence of the over tip vortices in the 3D simulations is responsible for producing the large difference in efficiency compared to the 2D predictions. The dynamic behaviour of the over tip vortex as a rotor blade rotates through each revolution is also explored in the paper.  相似文献

The performance of the thermoelectric-based waste heat recovery (WHR) system in an automobile greatly depends on the amount of heat extracted by the exhaust heat exchanger (EHE). In the present study, the thermohydraulic performance of the EHE having twisted ribs and the pressure drop across the entire heat exchanger have been experimentally investigated. The experiments were repeated for the various geometric parameters such as twist ratio (4-8), angle of attack (30°-90°), and pitch ratio (6-10) on the Reynolds number within the range of 2300 to 25,000. The heat transport and fluid flow characteristics were compared with an internally smooth EHE using the thermohydraulic performance parameter. The maximum heat transfer rate was improved at 164.22%. However, the specification of the twisted rib for superior performance has been obtained at twist ratio of 4 and pitch ratio of 8 with 60° angle of attack. The highest thermohydraulic performance parameter value revealed as 1.93 at the same configuration. With the change in twist ratio, the pitch ratio, angle of attack, and the heat transfer rate increased by 39.52%, 60.85%, and 40.70%, respectively. Thus, the efficient heat transfer with the twisted rib would improve the extent of WHR in automobiles.  相似文献

Forced convective heat transfer on the impinged plate associated with swirling impinging jets (SIJ) issuing from nozzles inserted by twisted tapes has been investigated. Swirling impingement jets with several swirl rates were generated by twisted tapes at different twist ratios (y/W = 3, 4, 5, and 6). The experiments were performed by locating nozzle at 4 different jet-to-plate spacings of L/D = 2, 4, 6 and 8. A jet Reynolds number varied between 4000 and 16000. Attributing to a high momentum transfer rate, an efficient heat transfer was obtained by using the jet with a small jet-to-plate spacing and the twist tape with a large twist ratio at high Reynolds number. At small jet-to-plate spacings (L/D = 2 and 4), swirling impinging jets gave higher heat transfer rate than conventional impinging jets while at large jet-to-plate spacings (L/D = 6 and 8), the opposed result was obtained. Over the range examined, only SIJ induced by the twisted tape at a twist ratio of 6 consistently provided higher average Nusselt numbers than CIJ.  相似文献

The performance characteristics and the near wake of a model wind turbine were investigated experimentally. The model tested is a three‐bladed horizontal axis type wind turbine with an upstream rotor of 0.90 m diameter. The performance measurements were conducted at various yaw angles, a freestream speed of about 10 m s ?1, and the tip speed ratio was varied from 0.5 to 12. The time‐averaged streamwise velocity field in the near wake of the turbine was measured at different tip speed ratios and downstream locations. As expected, it was found that power and thrust coefficients decrease with increasing yaw angle. The power loss is about 3% when the yaw angle is less than 10° and increases to more than 30% when the yaw angle is greater than 30°. The velocity distribution in the near wake was found to be strongly influenced by the tip speed ratio and the yaw angle. At the optimum tip speed ratio, the axial velocity was almost uniform within the midsection of the rotor wake, whereas two strong peaks are observed for high tip speed ratios when the yaw angle is 0°. As the yaw angle increases, the wake width was found to be reduced and skewed towards the yawed direction. With increasing downstream distance, the wake velocity field was observed to depend on the tip speed ratio and more pronounced at high tip speed ratio. Experimental investigation of heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance of twisted tape solar water heater with various twist ratios has been conducted and the results are compared with plain tube collector for the same operating conditions with Reynolds number varied from 3000 to 23,000. Experimental data from plain tube collector is validated with the fundamental equations and found that the discrepancy is less than ±5.35% and ±8.80% for Nusselt number and friction factor, respectively. Correlations have been developed for Nusselt number and friction factor with various twist ratios (Y = 3, 4, 5, 6) and are compared with the experimental values. Results conclude that, heat transfer and pressure drop are higher in twisted tape collector compared to the plain one. Among the various twist ratios, the minimum twist ratio 3 is found to enhance the heat transfer and pressure drop due to swirl generation. As the twist ratio increases, the swirl generation decreases and minimizes the heat transfer and friction factor.  相似文献

Experimental investigation on heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of micro-finned tube fitted with full-length twisted tape and left–right twisted tape inserts of twist ratio 7.44, 8.27 and 11.17 has been presented. The experimental data obtained were compared with those obtained from plain tube published data. The heat transfer coefficient enhancement for left–right twisted inserts is higher than that for full-length twisted tape inserts for a given twist ratio. The empirical correlation for Nusselt number, friction relating Reynolds number and twist ratio was formed for both twisted tape inserts and left–right inserts and found to fit the experimental data within ±3.6% and ±2.5% for Nusselt number and ±7% and ±8.5% friction factor, respectively. Performance evaluation analysis was made and the maximum performance ratio was obtained for left–right twisted tape inserts.  相似文献

Experimental investigation of heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance of thermosyphon solar water heater system fitted with helical twisted tape of various twist ratios has been performed and presented. The helical twisted tape induces swirl flow inside the riser tubes, which increases the heat transfer and pressure drop. The empirical correlations developed for Nusselt number and friction factor with various twist ratios (Y = 3, 4, 5, 6) are fitted with the experimental data with a discrepancy of less than ±4.54% and ±6.13% respectively. The results are compared with a plain tube collector at the same operating conditions. Conclusions made from the results show that heat transfer enhancement in twisted tape collector is higher than the plain tube collector with minimum twist ratio and gradually decreases with increase in twist ratio. The overall thermal performance of twisted tape collector is found to increase with increase in solar intensity.  相似文献

This article presents the computational fluid dynamic simulation of the heat transfer characteristics induced by a swap swirl air‐jet generator on the impingement surface. The study was carried out for conventional and swap twist tape inserts of twisted ratio y = 2.93 with various swap angles (α = 30°, 60°, 90°) at a constant distance of nozzle diameter impingement plate (L = 2D). The results show that the Nusselt number of the swirl impingement air‐jet depends on the twisted tape swap angles and airflow rate. The results also showed that the swap angle of 90° gave notable uniform local heat transfer distribution compared with the typical twist tape and other swap twist tapes (α = 30°, 60°). In addition, the predicted results of the local heat transfer coefficient help explain the local turbulence intensity and generation to assist the industrial applications of swirl impingement air‐cooling jet.  相似文献

Downwind force angles are small for current turbines systems (1–5 MW) such that they may be readily accommodated by conventional upwind configurations. However, analysis indicates that extreme‐scale systems (10–20 MW) will have larger angles that may benefit from downwind‐aligned configurations. To examine potential rotor mass reduction, the pre‐alignment concept was investigated a two‐bladed configuration by keeping the structural and aerodynamic characteristics of each blade fixed (to avoids a complete blade re‐design). Simulations for a 13.2 MW rated rotor at steady‐state conditions show that this concept‐level two‐bladed design may yield 25% rotor mass savings while also reducing average blade stress over all wind speeds. These results employed a pre‐alignment on the basis of a wind speed of 1.25 times the rated wind speed. The downwind pre‐aligned concept may also reduce damage equivalent loads on the blades by 60% for steady rated wind conditions. Even higher mass and damage equivalent load savings (relative to conventional upwind designs) may be possible for larger systems (15–20 MW) for which load‐alignment angles become even larger. However, much more work is needed to determine whether this concept can be translated into a practical design that must meet a wide myriad of other criteria. This paper presents the results of field tests using linear individual pitch control (LIPC) on the two‐bladed Controls Advanced Research Turbine 2 (CART2) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). LIPC has recently been introduced as an alternative to the conventional individual pitch control (IPC) strategy for two‐bladed wind turbines. The main advantage of LIPC over conventional IPC is that it requires, at most, only two feedback loops to potentially reduce the periodic blade loads. In previous work, LIPC was designed to implement blade pitch angles at a fixed frequency [e.g., the once‐per‐revolution (1P) frequency], which made it only applicable in above‐rated wind turbine operating conditions. In this study, LIPC is extended to below‐rated operating conditions by gain scheduling the controller on the rotor speed. With this extension, LIPC and conventional IPC are successfully applied to the NREL CART2 wind turbine. The field‐test results obtained during the measurement campaign indicate that LIPC significantly reduces the wind turbine loads for both below‐rated and above‐rated operation. The article presents an experimental study of turbulent heat transfer and flow friction characteristics in a circular tube equipped with two types of twisted tapes: (1) typical twisted tapes and (2) alternate clockwise and counterclockwise twisted tapes (C–CC twisted tapes). Nine different C–CC twisted tapes are tested in the current work; they included the tapes with three twist ratios, y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0, each with three twist angles, θ = 30o, 60o and 90o. The experiments have been performed over a Reynolds number range of 3000–27,000 under uniform heat flux conditions, using water as working fluid. The obtained results reveal that the C–CC twisted-tapes provide higher heat transfer rate, friction factor and heat transfer enhancement index than the typical twisted-tapes at similar operating conditions. The results also show that the heat transfer rate of the C–CC tapes increases with the decrease of twist ratio and the increase of twist angle values. Depending on Reynolds number, twist ratio and twist angle values, the mean Nusselt numbers in the tube fitted with the C–CC twisted tapes are higher than those with the typical ones and the plain tube around 12.8–41.9% and 27.3–90.5%, respectively. The maximum heat transfer enhancement indexes of the C–CC twisted tapes with θ = 90o for y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0, are 1.4, 1.34 and 1.3, respectively. In addition, correlations of the Nusselt number and the friction factor for using the C–CC twisted tapes are also determined. Both predicted Nusselt number and friction factor are within ±15% and ±15% deviation compared to the experimental data.  相似文献

Twisted oval tube heat exchanger is a type of heat exchanger aims at decreasing the pressure drop of the shell side. In the present study, heat transfer and pressure drop performances of twisted oval tube have been studied experimentally and numerically. The experimental study of the twisted oval tube shows that heat transfer process can be enhanced but also with an increasing of pressure drop when compared with the smooth round tube. The effects of geometrical parameters on the performance of the twisted oval tube have been analyzed numerically. The result reveals that the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor both increase with the increasing of axis ratio a/b, while both decrease with the increasing of twist pitch length P. The influence of a/b and P on the overall performance of the twisted oval tubes are also studied. Aiming at obtaining the heat transfer enhancement mechanism of the twisted oval tube, secondary flow, total velocity and temperature distributions of flow section are given. From the analysis it can be concluded that the emergence of twist in the twisted oval tube results in secondary flow. It exists in the form of spiral flow when a/b is big, but in the form of up and down when a/b is small. It is this secondary flow that changes the total velocity and temperature distributions of the twisted oval tube when compared with a smooth oval tube with the same sectional geometric parameters. Then the synergy angle between velocity vector and temperature gradient is reduced and the heat transfer process is enhanced.  相似文献

The chord and twist angle radial profiles of a fixed-pitch fixed-speed (FPFS) horizontal-axis wind turbine blade are based on a particular design wind speed and design tip speed ratio. Because the tip speed ratio varies with wind speed, the originally optimized chord and twist angle radial profiles for a preliminary blade design through optimum rotor theory do not necessarily provide the highest annual energy production (AEP) for the wind turbine on a specific site with known wind resources. This paper aims to demonstrate a novel optimal blade design method for an FPFS wind turbine through adopting linear radial profiles of the blade chord and twist angle and optimizing the slope of these two lines. The radial profiles of the blade chord and twist angle are linearized on a heuristic basis with fixed values at the blade tip and floating values at the blade root based on the preliminary blade design, and the best solution is determined using the highest AEP for a particular wind speed Weibull distribution as the optimization criteria with constraints of the top limit power output of the wind turbine. The outcomes demonstrate clearly that the proposed blade design optimization method offers a good opportunity for FPFS wind turbine blade design to achieve a better power performance and low manufacturing cost. This approach can be used for any practice of FPFS wind turbine blade design and refurbishment.  相似文献

A comprehensive experimental investigation is conducted on the augmentation of heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop during condensation of HFC-134a in a horizontal tube at the presence of different twisted tape inserts. The test section is a 1.04 m long double-tube counter-flow heat exchanger. The refrigerant flows in the inner copper and the cooling water flows in annulus. The experiments are performed for a plain tube and four tubes with twisted tapes inserts of 6, 9, 12 and 15 twist ratios. The pressure drop is directly measured by a differential pressure transducer. It is found that the twisted tape with twist ratio of 6 gives the highest enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient and the maximum pressure drop compared to the plain tube on a nominal area basis. For this case the enhancement in heat transfer and the pressure drop are increased by 40 and 240% in comparison with to the plain tube. It is observed that the twisted tape with the twist ratio of 9 has the best performance enhancing the heat transfer with the minimum pressure drop. Also empirical correlations are developed to predict smooth tube and swirl flow pressure drop. Predicted results are compared to experimental data and it is found that these correlations are reliable for pressure drop estimation.  相似文献

To alleviate the mass‐scaling issues associated with conventional upwind rotors of extreme‐scale wind turbines (≥10 MW), a morphing downwind‐aligned rotor (MoDaR) concept is proposed herein. The concept employs a downwind rotor with blades whose elements are stiff (no intentional flexibility) but with hub‐joints that can be unlocked to allow for moment‐free downwind alignment. Aligning the combination of gravitational, centrifugal and thrust forces along the blade path reduces downwind cantilever loads, resulting in primarily tensile loading. For control simplicity, the blade curvature can be fixed with a single morphing degree of freedom using a near‐hub joint for coning angle: 22° at rated conditions. The conventional baseline was set as the 13.2‐MW Sandia 100‐m all glass blade in a three‐bladed upwind configuration. To quantify potential mass savings, a downwind load‐aligning, two‐bladed rotor was designed. Because of the reduced number of blades, the MoDaR concept had a favorable 33% mass reduction. The blade reduction and coning led to a reduction in rated power, but morphing increased energy capture at lower speeds such that both the MoDaR and conventional rotors have the same average power: 5.4 MW. A finite element analysis showed that quasi‐steady structural stresses could be reduced, over a range of operating wind speeds and azimuthal angles, despite the increases in loading per blade. However, the concept feasibility requires additional investigation of the mass, cost and complexity of the morphing hinge, the impact of unsteady aeroelastic influence because of turbulence and off‐design conditions, along with system‐level Levelized Cost of Energy analysis. Experimental investigation of heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance of thermosyphon solar water heater system fitted with helical and Left–Right twist of twist ratio 3 has been performed and presented. The helical twisted tape induces swirl flow inside the riser tubes unidirectional over the length. But, in Left–Right system the swirl flow is bidirectional which increases the heat transfer and pressure drop when compared to the helical system. The experimental heat transfer and friction factors characteristics are validated with theoretical equations and the deviation falls with in the acceptable limits. The results show that heat transfer enhancement in twisted tape collector is higher than the plain tube collector. Compared to helical and Left–Right twisted tape system of same twist ratio 3, maximum thermal performance is obtained for Left–Right twisted tape collector with increase in solar intensity.  相似文献

Extreme‐scale wind turbines (rated powers greater than 10 MW) with large rotor diameters and conventional upwind designs must resist extreme downwind and gravity loads. This can lead to significant structural design challenges and high blade masses that can impede the reduction of levelized cost of wind energy. Herein, the theoretical basis for downwind load alignment is developed. This alignment can be addressed with active downwind coning to reduce/eliminate flapwise bending loads by balancing the transverse components of thrust, centrifugal, and gravitational force. Equations are developed herein that estimates the optimal coning angle that reduces flapwise loads by a specified amount. This analysis is then applied to a 13.2‐MW scale with 100‐m‐level wind turbine blades, where it is found that a load alignment coning schedule can substantially reduce the root flapwise bending moments. This moment reduction in this example can allow the rotor mass to be decreased significantly when compared with a conventional upwind three‐bladed rotor while maintaining structural performance and annual energy output.  相似文献

Conventional Savonius rotors have high coefficient of static torque at certain rotor angles and a negative coefficient of static torque from 135° to 165° and from 315° to 345° in one cycle of 360°. In order to decrease this variation in static torque from 0° to 360°, a helical Savonius rotor with a twist of 90° is proposed. In this study, tests on helical Savonius rotors are conducted in an open jet wind tunnel. Coefficient of static torque, coefficient of torque and coefficient of power for each helical Savonius rotor are measured. The performance of helical rotor with shaft between the end plates and helical rotor without shaft between the end plates at different overlap ratios namely 0.0, 0.1 and 0.16 is compared. Helical Savonius rotor without shaft is also compared with the performance of the conventional Savonius rotor. The results indicate that all the helical Savonius rotors have positive coefficient of static torque at all the rotor angles. The helical rotors with shaft have lower coefficient of power than the helical rotors without shaft. Helical rotor without shaft at an overlap ratio of 0.0 and an aspect ratio of 0.88 is found to have almost the same coefficient of power when compared with the conventional Savonius rotor. Correlation for coefficient of torque and power is developed for helical Savonius rotor for a range of Reynolds numbers studied.  相似文献

Shell and tube heat exchanger with single twisted tube bundle in five different twist angles, are studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and compared to the conventional shell and tube heat exchanger with single segmental baffles. Effect of shell-side nozzles configurations on heat exchanger performance is studied as well. Heat transfer rate and pressure drop are the main issues investigated in the paper. The results show that, for the same shell-side flow rate, the heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger with twisted tube bundle is lower than that of the heat exchanger with segmental baffles while shell-side pressure drop of the former is even much lower than that of the latter. The comparison of heat transfer rate per unit pressure drop versus shell-side mass flow rate shows that heat exchanger with twisted tube bundle in both cases of perpendicular and tangential shell-side nozzles, has significant performance advantages over the segmental baffled heat exchanger. Optimum bundle twist angles for such exchangers are found to be 65 and 55° for all shell side flow rates.  相似文献
