Constructing a new course for undergraduate teaching of general practice

This paper outlines in Part I the method used to analyse and re-define a set of educational objectives on which a new course of teaching of general practice in the later clinical years is based. Part II describes the course, the learning methods, behavioural attainments and the techniques of evaluation to be implemented. A year was spent on the exercise by a group which comprised the professorial head, consultant senior lecturer and a senior registrar tutor from the Department of General Practice, Queen's University, Belfast, and a consultant educationalist, a senior lecturer, Department of Education, of the same University.     

Effect of perceived controllability and performance standards on self-regulation of complex decision making.

Tested the hypothesis that perceived controllability and stringency of performance standards would affect self-regulatory mechanisms governing performance attainments of a simulated organization. Ss who managed the simulated organization under a cognitive set that organizations are not easily controllable displayed low perceived self-efficacy, even when standards were within easy reach, and lowered their organizational goals. Ss who operated under a cognitive set that organizations are controllable maintained a strong sense of self-efficacy, set increasingly challenging goals, and exhibited effective analytic thinking. Divergent changes in these self-regulatory factors were accompanied by differences in organizational attainments. Path analyses revealed that perceived self-efficacy, which was affected by prior accomplishments, influenced subsequent organizational performance through its effects on analytic strategies. After further experience, the performance system was regulated more extensively and intricately by Ss' self-conceptions of efficacy. Perceived self-efficacy affected subsequent organizational attainments both through its influence on personal goal challenges. The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) sponsored the Consensus Conference on Fostering More Human Care Creating a Healing Environment in October 1990 at Snowbird, Utah. The purpose of this conference was to address the challenges of providing sensitive, humane critical care in an increasingly technological and cost-conscious environment. The long-term objective was to develop this document (initially published by SCCM in 1992) as a resource for critical care professionals who are seeking methods by which to foster more humane care of their acutely ill patients.

Les enseignants et les conduites sociales de leurs élèves.

Compared the viewpoints of 45 teachers and 744 students concerning social behaviors in secondary school. Questionnaire data indicate that girls were evaluated by teachers or evaluated themselves more postively than boys and that behaviors found more appropriate for the academic environment were more often observed among Ss with above-average scholastic attainments. The code of the scientist and its relationship to ethics

Scientist's norms (principally honesty, objectivity, tolerance, doubt of certitude, and unselfish engagement) are in danger of serious distortion unless broadened to apply to the relations between scientists and nonscientists. Also needing supplementation is an ethic of development appropriate to a fast-changing society and advanced as an approach to the more effective and humane regulation of cultural and technological development. Because of their genetic relationships the code of the scientist and the ethic of development are probably complementary and together may overcome the shortcomings of each taken separately. Taken together, furthermore, they indicate the possibility of a humane world order based on the cooperation of a community of scientists and its public.
