Canadian-based QMP Metal Powders will be promoting a high-strength diffusion-bonded molybdenum steel powder at PM2003 in Valencia later this month. ATOMET DB49 is a newly developed grade that allows the manufacture of PM parts with a tensile strength of more than 850MPa using normal sintering conditions in belt furnaces equipped with a rapid cooling zone. There is ample evidence suggesting (e.g., A. Tesser & S. Rosen, 1975) that people are reluctant to transmit bad news. Research on rumors, on the other hand, suggests that people sometimes are less reluctant to transmit bad news. It is argued that differences between the 2 lines of research include the definitiveness of the consequences of the news and the relationship between communicator and recipient. The influence of these 2 factors on news transmission was investigated in 3 experiments. Results showed that bad news with indefinite consequences was transmitted more often than bad news with definite consequences and that both kinds of bad news were transmitted more often if the recipient was a friend rather than a stranger. Differences in feelings of moral responsibility to transmit the news largely accounted for both effects. The 2 factors did not affect the likelihood of good news transmission. Giving bad news is an unpleasant task, and the medical literature provides numerous guidelines for giving bad news well. However, what people mean by "giving bad news well" is less clear. What should be the goal when communicating bad news? The authors suggest that the goal of news-givers should be to guide recipients toward a desired response and the authors propose a theoretical framework, the Bad News Response Model, for delivering bad news that draws from research in health and social psychology. The model is applicable to all forms of bad news and specifies that three characteristics of the news (controllability, likelihood, and severity) influence which response (Watchful Waiting, Active Change, or Acceptance) will most often lead to the best quality of life for the recipient. To determine whether cognitive treatment would enhance the effectiveness of participant modeling (PM) treatment for phobias, 36 subjects phobic to dogs and cats were given either PM alone, PM with self-instructional training, PM with self-verbalizations ("thinking aloud"), or placebo treatment. The three PM treatments produced substantial and equivalent improvement in behavior at posttest, in contrast to the placebo group, which did not change. At follow-up, the combined PM/self instructional training group showed more phobic behavior and lower self-efficacy than the other PM groups. The medial nucleus of the pulvinar complex (PM) has widespread connections with association cortex. We investigated the connections of the PM with the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in macaque monkeys, with tracers placed into the PM and the PFC, respectively. Injections of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) placed into the PM resulted in widespread anterograde terminal labeling in layers III and IV, and retrograde cellular labeling in layer VI of the PFC. Injections of tracers centered on the central/lateral PM resulted in labeling of dorsolateral and orbital regions, whereas injections centered on caudal, medial PM resulted in labeling of dorsomedial and medial PFC. Since injections of the PM included neighboring thalamic nuclei, retrograde tracers were placed into distinct cytoarchitectonic regions of the PFC and retrogradely labeled cells in the posterior thalamus were charted. The results of this series of tracer injections confirmed the results of thalamic injections. Injections placed into areas 8a, 12 (lateral and orbital), 45, 46 and 11, retrogradely labeled neurons in the central/lateral PM, while tracer injections placed into areas 9, 12 (lateral), 10 and 24, labeled medial PM. The connections of the PM with temporal, parietal, insular, and cingulate cortices were also examined. The central/lateral PM has reciprocal connections with posterior parietal areas 7a, 7ip, and 7b, insular cortex, caudal superior temporal sulcus (STS), caudal superior temporal gyrus (STG), and posterior cingulate, whereas medial PM is connected mainly with the anterior STS and STG, as well as the cingulate cortex and the amygdala. These connectional studies suggest that the central/ lateral and medial PM have divergent connections which may be the substrate for distinct functional circuits.  相似文献

Estimating Reference Evapotranspiration Using Limited Weather Data   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The FAO-56 Penman-Monteith combination equation (FAO-56 PM) has been recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as the standard equation for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ET0). The FAO-56 PM equation requires the numerous weather data that are not available in the most of the stations. This paper examines the potential of FAO-56 PM equation in estimating the ET0 under humid conditions from limited weather data. For this study, full weather data sets were collected from six humid weather stations from Serbia, South East Europe. FAO-56 reduced-set PM ET0 estimates were in closest agreement with FAO-56 full set PM ET0 estimates at the most of locations. The difference between FAO-56 full set PM ET0 estimates and FAO-56 PM reduced-set ET0 estimates generally increases by increasing the number of estimated weather parameters. Overall results indicate that FAO-56 reduced-set PM approaches mostly provided better results compared to Turc equation, adjusted Hargreaves equation and temperature-based RBF network. This fact strongly supports using the FAO-56 PM equation even in the absence of the complete weather data set. The minimum and maximum air temperature data and local default wind speed value are the minimum data requirements necessary to successfully use the FAO-56 PM equation under humid conditions.  相似文献

The present study, a secondary analysis of published data (B. Hitsman et al., 1999), assessed (a) the influence of initial positive mood (PM) on smoking cessation and (b) whether smokers low in PM benefited from fluoxetine versus placebo for cessation. Euthymic adult smokers (N = 103) received 10 weeks of cessation treatment. Analyses showed a Time × PM interaction, indicating that higher baseline PM predicted decreased abstinence during treatment but increased abstinence afterward, mediated by time to dropout. Dichotomous initial PM interacted with drug, suggesting a benefit of fluoxetine for low-PM smokers. Results indicate that lower pretreatment PM may inhibit long-term cessation. The sperm plasma membrane is segregated into functionally, biochemically, and structurally distinct domains yet the protein sorting pathways and assembly mechanisms that assemble these domains during spermiogenesis are incompletely understood. We previously characterized two structurally related size-variant, integral membrane proteins of 52 kDa (PM52) and 35 kDa localized to the periacrosomal plasma membrane of guinea pig cauda epididymal spermatozoa (Westbrook-Case et al., 1994). In this study we used light and electron microscopic immunocytochemistry to define the expression pattern and sorting pathway that establishes the domain-specific distribution of PM52 during spermiogenesis. The PM52 is first expressed in acrosome-phase spermatids and it localizes exclusively to the cytoplasmic lobe. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that both cytoplasmic vesicles and the plasma membrane of the cytoplasmic lobe labeled with anti-PM52. During early stages of expression, PM52 appeared to be absent from the head region, but significant PM52 accumulation over the spermatid head was noted in late acrosomal phase spermatids. Throughout spermiogenesis PM52 extended posteriorly to the annulus, which represents a barrier preventing PM52 diffusion into the posterior tail. Following the migration of the annulus to the midpiece-principal piece junction, PM52 began to disappear from the flagellar region and at the completion of spermiogenesis most of the PM52 was restricted to the acrosomal segment. Spermatids and epididymal sperm PM52 exhibited identical sizes by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting, indicating that they are not proteolytically modified during epididymal maturation. The PM52 antibodies were also used to screen a guinea pig testis cDNA library, and sequence determination of full-length PM52 clones demonstrated identity of a sperm membrane protein recently termed "sperad" (Quill and Garbers, 1996). Membrane barriers and potential mechanisms establishing the domain-specific residence of PM52 are discussed.  相似文献
