An experimental energy storage system has been designed using an horizontal shell and tube heat exchanger incorporating a medium temperature phase change material (PCM) with a melting point of 117.7 °C. Two experimental configurations consisting of a control unit with one heat transfer tube and a multitube unit with four heat transfer tubes were studied. The thermal characteristics in the systems have been analysed using isothermal contour plots and temperature time curves. Temperature gradients along the three directions of the shell and tube systems; axial, radial and angular directions have been analysed and compared. The phase change in the multitube system was dominated by the effect of convective heat transfer compared to conductive heat transfer in the control system. The temperature gradient in the PCM during phase change was greatest in the radial direction for both the control and multitube systems. The temperature gradients recorded in the axial direction for the control and multitube systems during the change of phase were respectively 2.5 and 3.5% that of the radial direction, indicating essentially a two-dimensional heat transfer in the PCM. The onset of natural convection through the formation of multiple convective cells in the multitube system significantly altered the shape of the solid liquid interface fluid flow and indicates the requirement for an in-depth study of multitube arrangements.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage is critical for reducing the discrepancy between energy supply and energy demand, as well as for improving the efficiency of solar thermal energy systems. Among the different types of thermal energy storage, phase-change materials (PCM) thermal energy storage has gained significant attention recently because of its high energy density per unit mass/volume at nearly constant temperature. This study experimentally investigates the using of a triplex tube heat exchanger (TTHX) with PCM in the middle tube as the thermal energy storage to power a liquid desiccant air-conditioning system. Four longitudinal fins were welded to each of the inner and middle tubes as a heat transfer enhancement in the TTHX to improve the thermal performance of the thermal energy storage. The average temperature of the PCM during the melting process in the TTHX with and without fins was compared. The PCM temperature gradients in the angular direction were analyzed to study the effect of the natural convection in the melting process of the thermal storage. The energy storage efficiency of the TTHX was determined. Results indicated that there was a considerable enhancement in the melting rate by using fins in the TTHX thermal storage. The PCM melting time is reduced to 86% by increasing of the inlet heat transfer fluid. The average heat storage efficiency calculated from experimental data for all the PCMs is 71.8%, meaning that 28.2% of the heat actually was lost.  相似文献

The heat transfer characteristics of a low temperature latent heat storage system have been determined for circular finned and unfinned tubes using sodium acetate trihydrate as a phase change material (PCM). In the heat recovery stage, supercooling of PCM in the finned-tube system is larger than that in the unfinned-tube system. The heat-transfer coefficient between the PCM and the heat-transfer tube surface can be predicted from the steady-state heat conduction equation except the beginning of freezing with some degree of supercooling. The heat transfer is significantly reduced by the void cavities upon shrinkage of PCM in the finned-tube system. The enhancement of heat transfer by thin finned-tube over the unfinned-tube is found to be negligible. The heat-transfer coefficient in the thick finned-tube system is approximately two times higher than that in the unfinned-tube system. The heat transfer coefficients for the unfinned-tube and thick finned-tube systems are found to be 45 150 W/m2-K and 90 250 W/m2-K, respectively. The thermal performance for three different tube systems is found to be strongly affected by the inlet temperature but not by the flow rate of the heat transfer fluid. The amount of heat recovered has been correlated in terms of the Fourier, Stefan, and Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

Elevated operating temperatures reduce the solar to electrical conversion efficiency of building integrated photovoltaic devices (BIPV). Phase change materials (PCM) can be used to passively limit this temperature rise although their effectiveness is limited by their low thermal conductivities and crystallisation segregation during solidification. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of the effects of convection and crystalline segregation in a PCM as a function of efficiency of heat transfer within the finned PV/PCM system. The thermal performances of bulk PCM with crystallisation segregation for different internal fin arrangements are presented. It is noted that the addition of internal fins improves the temperature control of the PV in a PV/PCM system.  相似文献

Efficient application of intermittent renewable energy sources, like solar, waste heat recovery, and so forth, depends on a large extent on the thermal energy storage methods. Latent heat energy storage with the use of phase‐change material (PCM) is the most promising one because it stores large energy in the form of latent heat at a constant temperature. The current study investigates melting and solidification of PCM in the triplex tube heat exchanger (TTHX) numerically. The two‐dimensional numerical model has been developed using Ansys Fluent 16.2, which considers the effects of conduction as well as natural convection. To overcome the limitation imposed by the poor thermal conductivity of PCM, use of fins is the better solution. In the current study, longitudinal fins are used for better performance of TTHX, which increases heat‐transfer area between PCM and heat‐transfer fluid. The effects of location of fins, that is, internal, external, and combined internal‐external fins, are observed. All three configurations improve melting as well as solidification process. During the melting process, internal and combined internal‐external fins are equally efficient, in which maximum 59% to 60% reduction in melting time is achieved. For solidification, internal‐external fins combination gives maximum 58% reduction in solidification time.  相似文献

The charging and discharging rates of a phase change material (PCM) in a horizontal latent heat storage unit (LHSU) is largely influenced by the lower thermal conductivity of the PCM. In the present research, four different configurations of longitudinal fins are proposed to augment the heat transfer in horizontal shell and tube type LHSUs. Numerical investigations are reported to establish the thermal performance augmentation with rectangular, triangular, and Y‐shaped (bifurcated) fins. From the results, it has been inferred that all fin configurations provide a faster charging and discharging rate. In the present set of geometric dimensions of LHSU considered, a reduction in charging time of 68.71% is evaluated for case III (three rectangular fins with one fin positioned in the area of the heat transfer fluid [HTF] surface) and case V (two bifurcated fins with one fin positioned in the area of the HTF surface). Moreover, overall cycle (charging + discharging) time is reduced by 58.3% for case III. Employment of fins results in a faster rate of absorption and extraction of energy from the PCM.  相似文献

Numerical investigation of a PCM-based heat sink with internal fins   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The present study explores numerically the process of melting of a phase-change material (PCM) in a heat storage unit with internal fins open to air at its top. Heat is transferred to the unit through its horizontal base, to which vertical fins made of aluminum are attached. The phase-change material is stored between the fins. Its properties used in the simulations, including the melting temperature of 23-25 °C, latent and sensible specific heat, thermal conductivity and density in solid and liquid states, are based on a commercially available paraffin wax.A detailed parametric investigation is performed for melting in a relatively small system, 5-10 mm high, where the fin thickness varies from 0.15 mm to 1.2 mm, and the thickness of the PCM layers between the fins varies from 0.5 mm to 4 mm. The ratio of the PCM layer to fin thickness is held constant. The temperature of the base varies from 6 °C to 24 °C above the mean melting temperature of the PCM.Transient three- and two-dimensional simulations are performed using the Fluent 6.0 software, yielding temperature evolution in the fins and the PCM. The computational results show how the transient phase-change process, expressed in terms of the volume melt fraction of the PCM, depends on the thermal and geometrical parameters of the system, which relate to the temperature difference between the base and the mean melting temperature, and to the thickness and height of the fins.In search for generalization, dimensional analysis of the results is performed and presented as the Nusselt numbers and melt fractions vs. the Fourier and Stefan numbers and fin parameters. In some cases, the effect of Rayleigh number is significant and demonstrated.  相似文献

The enhancement of heat transfer in a thermal storage system consisting of a cylindrical vertical tube with internal longitudinal fin arrangement is discussed in this paper. This configuration that forms a V-shaped enclosure for the phase change material (PCM) gives maximum benefit to the fin arrangement. A theoretical model that also accounts for the circumferential heat flow through the tube wall is developed using enthalpy formulation and is employed in conjunction with the fully implicit finite difference method to solve the solidification in the convectively cooled vertical tube. A generalised enthalpy-temperature (H-T) relationship, developed by Date, is suitable for constant phase change temperature and this is modified in the present work to accommodate materials having either constant or a range of phase change temperatures. The numerical model is validated with experimental data. The instantaneous surface heat flux and the solidified fraction for different number of fins and tube radii, that are of interest for the design of latent heat thermal storage system consisting of an array of vertical cylindrical tubes containing PCM inside it, are also discussed in this article.  相似文献

This paper presents a finite-difference based numerical simulation of steady, laminar heat transfer in circular tubes fitted with four identical longitudinal fins having tapered lateral profiles. The lateral view of the tip of each fin is a circular arc. The tube is exposed to constant heat flux. The temperature dependence of thermal conductivity and viscosity has been taken into account. The flow is assumed to be locally fully developed but thermally undeveloped. The momentum equation for the fluid and energy equations for the fluid and the tube wall with/without fins are solved iteratively and simultaneously. At each axial location, bulk velocity, bulk temperature of the fluid and Effectiveness which is an indicator of the enhancement of heat transfer due to addition of fins are calculated. A parametric study of effectiveness vs. axial distance for various combinations of fin materials and coolants reveals interesting results. The velocity profiles, friction factors and comparisons with respect to constant property solutions have also been discussed.  相似文献

The heat transfer behavior of phase change material fluid (PCM) under laminar flow conditions in circular tubes and internally longitudinal finned tubes was studied. An effective specific heat technique was used to model the phase change process. Heat transfer results for a smooth circular tube with PCM fluid were obtained under hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed conditions. Results for the finned tube were obtained using the H2 and T boundary conditions. It was determined that the Nusselt number was strongly dependent on the Stefan number, fin thermal conductivity value, and height of the fins.  相似文献

Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) utilizing heat pipes or fins is investigated experimentally. Photographic observations, melting and solidification rates, and PCM energy storage quantities are reported. Heat pipe effectiveness is defined and used to quantify the relative performance of heat pipe-assisted and fin-assisted configurations to situations involving neither heat pipes nor fins. For the experimental conditions of this study, inclusion of heat pipes increases PCM melting rates by approximately 60%, while the fins are not as effective. During solidification, the heat pipe-assisted configuration transfers approximately twice the energy between a heat transfer fluid and the PCM, relative to both the fin-assisted LHTES and the non-heat pipe, non-fin configurations.  相似文献

Transient three-dimensional heat transfer numerical simulations were conducted to investigate a hybrid PCM (phase change materials) based multi-fin heat sink. Numerical computation was conducted with different amounts of fins (0 fin, 3 fins and 6 fins), various heating power level (2 W, 3 W and 4 W), different orientation tests (vertical/horizontal/slanted), and charge and discharge modes. Calculating time step (0.03 s, 0.05 s, and 0.07 s) size was discussed for transient accuracy as well. The theoretical model developed is validated by comparing numerical predictions with the available experimental data in the literature. The results showed that the transient surface temperatures are predicted with a maximum discrepancy within 10.2%. The operation temperature can be controlled well by the attendance of phase change material and the longer melting time can be conducted by using a multi-fin hybrid heat sink respectively.  相似文献

This paper addresses a numerical and experimental investigation of a thermal energy storage unit involving phase change process dominated by heat conduction. The thermal energy storage unit involves a triplex concentric tube with phase change material (PCM) filling in the middle channel, with hot heat transfer fluid (HHTF) flowing outer channel during charging process and cold heat transfer fluid (CHTF) flowing inner channel during discharging process. A simple numerical method according to conversation of energy, called temperature & thermal resistance iteration method has been developed for the analysis of PCM solidification and melting in the triplex concentric tube. To test the physical validity of the numerical results, an experimental apparatus has been designed and built by which the effect of the inlet temperature and the flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF, including HHTF and CHTF) on the thermal energy storage has been studied. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data shows good agreement. Graphical results including fluid temperature and interface of solid and liquid phase of PCM versus time and axial position, time-wise variation of energy stored/released by the system were presented and discussed.  相似文献

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed for the simulation of a phase change thermal energy storage process in a 100 l cylindrical tank, horizontally placed. The model is validated with experimental data obtained for the same configuration. The cold storage unit was charged using water as the heat transfer medium, flowing inside a horizontal tube bundle, and the selected phase change material (PCM) was microencapsulated slurry in 45% w/w concentration. The mathematical model is based on the three-dimensional transient Navier–Stokes equations with nonlinear temperature dependent thermo-physical properties of the PCM during the phase change range. These properties were experimentally determined using analytical methods. The governing equations were solved using the ANSYS/FLUENT commercial software package. The mathematical model is validated with experimental data for three different flow rates of the heat transfer fluid during the charging process. Bulk temperature, heat transfer rate and amount of energy stored were used as performance indicators. It was found that the PCM bulk temperatures were predicted within 5% of the experimental data. The results have also shown that the total accumulated energy was within 10% of the observed value, and thus it can be concluded that the model predicts the heat transfer inside the storage system with good accuracy.  相似文献

Heat management during the absorption/desorption process is a key aspect in improving the performance of large-scale hydrogen storage systems. In this article, the absorption and desorption performance of a multi-tubular hydride reactor is numerically investigated and optimized for 60 kg mass of LaNi5 alloy. The 90% absorption with 7, 14, and 19 tubes is achieved in 985, 404, and 317 s with an overall reactor weight of 78.46, 88, and 88.2 kg, respectively. The 14-tube reactor performance is investigated by introducing the longitudinal fins inside the tubes. The reactor performance is enhanced by allocating fins into different pairs of half and full fins constrained by overall fin volume. A thermal resistance network model is presented to investigate the effect of fin distribution and coolant velocity on equivalent resistance of the metal hydride reactor. Storage performance obtained from numerical model validates the thermal resistance analysis from heat transfer viewpoint. With six full fins, 90% hydrogen absorption is achieved in 76 s. However, tubes with 6, 8, and 12 pairs of half and full fins require 74, 58, and 54 s, respectively. The 14-tube reactor with 8 pairs of half and full fins is used for quantifying the augmentation in the absorption performance in response to operating conditions (supply pressure and heat transfer fluid temperature). A design methodology is outlined for the development of a large-scale multi-tubular hydride reactor based on a heat transfer optimization strategy.  相似文献

Flow boiling heat transfer experiments using R134a were carried out for jet impingement on smooth and enhanced surfaces. The enhanced surfaces were circular micro pin fins, hydrofoil micro pin fins, and square micro pin fins. The effects of saturation pressure, heat flux, Reynolds number, pin fin geometry, pin fin array configuration, and surface aging on flow boiling heat transfer characteristics were investigated. Flow boiling experiments were carried out for two different saturation pressures, 820 kPa and 1090 kPa. Four jet exit velocities ranging from 1.1–4.05 m/s were investigated. Flow boiling jet impingement on smooth surfaces was characterized by large temperature overshoots, exhibiting boiling hysteresis. Flow boiling jet impingement on micro pin fins displayed large heat transfer coefficients. Heat transfer coefficients as high as 150,000 W/m2 K were observed at a relatively low velocity of 2.2 m/s with the large (D = 125 μm) circular micro pin fins. Jet velocity, surface aging, and saturation pressure were found to have significant effects on the two-phase heat transfer characteristics. Subcooled nucleate boiling was found to be the dominant heat transfer mechanism.  相似文献

The study aims to find the optimal fin length distribution for improved heat transfer during melting and solidification in a tubular phase change material (PCM) heat exchanger (HE) designed for heat storage. Three types of horizontal PCM tabular HEs, all with five longitudinal fins, were studied numerically. While maintaining a constant heat-transfer area, each model depicts a unique fin length distribution design. The first model, which serves as the reference design, has a uniform fin length distribution and each fi\n is 30 mm long. The second model has shorter upper and side fins and longer lower fins. The third model has long lower fins but shorter than that of the second model, with short side fins and no change in upper fin length with reference design. The findings indicate that the second model exhibits the best heat-transfer performance for the melting process, while the first model is most effective for solidification. Interestingly, the third design emerges as the optimum choice for both melting and solidification processes, where for 1 h of melting operation, results obtained 87%, 92%, and 90% for three models, respectively, from the first uniform model to the third model. While for 2 h of solidification the result obtained 11%, 17%, and 13% liquid fraction for the three models, respectively.  相似文献

In this technical note, the problem concerning the quantification of heat transfer rates from an array of longitudinal radiating fins of rectangular profile in a tube/fin ensemble to a nonzero temperature sink is investigated. Radiating fins constitute essential elements in the thermal control of spacecrafts and satellites. We consider quasi one-dimensional heat conduction in the longitudinal radiating fins and neglect radiative exchange between the fins and the tubes carrying a hot fluid. It is demonstrated that the governing nonlinear differential equation of second order with constant coefficients and nonhomogeneous can be solved in exact, analytical implicit form. The pertinent temperature distributions eventually provide the magnitudes of heat transfer rates and fin efficiencies influenced by the radiation–conduction parameter and the sink temperature.  相似文献

The latent thermal energy storage system of the shell-and-tube type during charging and discharging has been analysed in this paper. An experimental and numerical investigation of transient forced convective heat transfer between the heat transfer fluid (HTF) with moderate Prandtl numbers and the tube wall, heat conduction through the wall and solid–liquid phase change of the phase change material (PCM), based on the enthalpy formulation, has been presented. A fully implicit two-dimensional control volume Fortran computer code, with algorithm for non-isothermal phase transition, has been developed for the solution of the corresponding mathematical model. The comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data shows good agreement for both paraffin non-isothermal melting and isothermal solidification. In order to provide guidelines for system performance and design optimisation, unsteady temperature distributions of the HTF, tube wall and the PCM have been obtained by a series of numerical calculations for various HTF working conditions and various geometric parameters, and the thermal behaviour of the latent thermal energy storage unit during charging and discharging has been simulated.  相似文献
