Thirteen lactating Holstein cows were assigned randomly to either a control or beta-carotene (600 mg/d) treatment group to determine the effect of long-term beta-carotene supplementation on releasable luteinizing hormone in response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone challenge. The experimental period was 28 wk. Milking was terminated at wk 16, ovariectomy performed at wk 20, and response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone determined at wk 27. Serum beta-carotene concentrations reflected dietary intake and were higher in the cows fed beta-carotene after 2 wk of supplementation and remained higher for the duration of the trial. Feeding supplemental beta-carotene had no effect on circulating progesterone concentration, corpora lutea size or corpora lutea progesterone concentration, or basal concentrations of luteinizing hormone, frequency, and amplitude of luteinizing hormone pulses, or the release of luteinizing hormone in response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Thus, pituitary responsiveness to exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone was not affected by feeding supplemental beta-carotene.  相似文献

Thirty-six mature Holstein cows were assigned at parturition to isocaloric diets of either 14.4 or 19.0% crude protein from highly soluble or insoluble nitrogen sources. The objective was to determine if elevated dietary crude protein affected milk production or serum metabolites. Cows individually were fed blended rations. Hourly blood samples were taken for a 12-h period during wk 1, 4, 7, and 10 postpartum. Rumen fluid samples were taken during wk 2, 4, and 6 postpartum. Cows fed diets containing 19% crude protein of high nitrogen solubility had larger dry matter intakes and tended to produce more milk than cows fed 14.4% crude protein. High crude protein intakes elevated rumen ammonia and blood urea nitrogen. Cows fed high crude protein, low nitrogen solubility diets had increased acetate to propionate ratio in rumen fluid. Serum insulin was increased in cows consuming high crude protein diets, regardless of the protein source. Serum nonesterified fatty acids decreased and albumin and glucose increased with week postpartum. Body weight change and fat-corrected milk production were not affected significantly by protein intake. Protein intakes in excess of requirements have no adverse effect on the production of early postpartum cows.  相似文献

Sixty-two multiparous and 35 primiparous Holstein cows were assigned randomly at 10 days postpartum to receive a ration with or without 300 mg beta-carotene/cow per day. Multiparous and primiparous cows were grouped separately and group-fed complete rations once daily. Incidence of ovarian cysts (26% by rectal palpation) was not affected by beta-carotene fed. Multiparous cows had greater incidence (39%) of ovarian cysts than primiparous cows (11%). Fifty-seven percent of cysts were classified follicular by rectal palpation. Progesterone concentration of milk also was used for diagnosis of type of cyst. Cows with ovarian cysts and with progesterone concentrations in milk less than 1 ng/ml were classified follicular, and those having concentration greater than 1 ng/ml were classified luteal. As determined by milk progesterone, rectal palpation was more accurate for diagnosis of luteal cysts than for diagnosis of follicular cysts. Progesterone concentrations of milk for animals with luteal and follicular cysts were 10.66 +/- 1.29 and .37 +/- .07 ng/ml. beta-Carotene did not affect response or days to respond to treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin or gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Supplemental beta-carotene was not beneficial for reducing incidence of ovarian cysts in cows receiving an adequate supply of beta-carotene in their diet.  相似文献

Sixty-three Holstein cows were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effects of dietary protein and exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone on performance postpartum and on circulating concentrations of progesterone. The experimental diets, 14 or 20% CP (dry basis), were fed from parturition to 14 wk postpartum. Blood serum urea N was elevated in the cows fed the 20% versus 14% CP diet. Feed intake was increased, but yield and composition of milk were not affected by the higher protein diet. Circulating concentrations of progesterone were lower in cows fed 20% than 14% protein on d 12 of both the synchronized and subsequent estrous cycles. Exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone administered on d 12 of the preceding estrous cycle did not increase the concentration of progesterone on d 12 of the subsequent estrous cycle. Luteal phase concentrations of progesterone were reduced by high dietary protein, but were not affected by gonadotropin-releasing hormone given on d 12 of the preceding cycle.  相似文献

Effects of prepartum dietary crude protein on growth hormone, insulin in blood plasma, and subsequent reproduction and lactation were investigated in 30 Holsteins. Cows were fed either 80 or 100% of the crude protein recommended by National Research Council starting about 60 days precalving. Postcalving all animals were fed according to recommendations. Blood was sampled on days 220 (start of experiment), 250, 270, and 280 of gestation and on days 10 and 30 postpartum. Cows fed 80% crude protein prepartum showed decreased intake of dry matter and urea nitrogen in blood plasma prepartum, and yields of milk and total solids decreased by about 15%. Body weight changes through 30 days postpartum were not significantly different between treatments. There were no significant differences for growth hormone and insulin except growth hormone tended to be higher on day 270 of gestation for cows fed 80% crude protein. Insulin was negatively correlated with lactation number -5.1 to -5.6. Reproductive efficiency was similar between treatment groups. Lower crude protein intake during the dry period decreased dry matter intake and yields of milk and total solids.  相似文献

Effects of dietary crude proteins on constituents of plasma and uterine secretions were examined at various stages of the estrous cycle of high producing Holstein cows. Eighteen cows were assigned randomly to isocaloric diets (74% total digestible nutrients) containing either 12 or 23% crude protein (dry matter) on day 40 postpartum. Uterine secretion and coccygeal blood samples were collected at estrus, days 5 and 15 of the first estrous cycle after day 50 postpartum, and at the subsequent estrus. The 23% crude protein diet resulted in higher concentrations of ammonia in blood, urea in blood plasma and uterine secretion, and phosphorus and potassium in plasma. Zinc increased during the estrous cycle in plasma of cows fed 23% crude protein and decreased in cows fed 12% crude protein. Magnesium concentrations in uterine secretions were lower in cows on 23% crude protein. Potassium and phosphorus also were lower in uterine secretions of cows fed 23% crude protein but only during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. Zinc concentrations in uterine secretions decreased faster during the estrous cycle in cows fed 12% crude protein than in cows fed 23% crude protein. Thus, the crude protein content of the diet altered concentrations in blood of ammonia and concentrations in plasma of urea, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. Crude protein content of the diet altered concentrations in uterine secretion of urea, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of dietary starch source and content in the immediate postpartum period on plasma metabolites and hormones and ovarian follicular development. One of 3 diets was fed in a randomized block design to 40 cows from calving until 70 d in milk. The diets contained 45% alfalfa silage (AS), 45% barley silage (BS), or 41% barley silage and 4% supplemental starch (SS) on a dry matter basis. All diets contained 45% barley-based concentrate and 10% alfalfa hay. Resulting starch levels were 25.2, 23.3, and 26.7% for AS, BS, and SS, respectively. Body condition was scored every other week and dry matter intake and milk yield were recorded daily. Milk samples were obtained weekly and blood samples were taken at calving and then every other week to determine concentrations of glucose, insulin, insulin-like growth factor-1, β-hydroxybutyrate, and nonesterified fatty acids. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed twice per week from 7 d after calving until first ovulation or 62 d in milk in all cows. For a subset of 7 AS-, 8 BS-, and 9 SS-fed cows, a complete estrous cycle was monitored for ovarian dynamics, and blood samples were collected every second day for progesterone and estradiol. Luteinizing hormone pulsatility was also determined (5 cows/treatment) approximately 15 d postcalving. Treatment had no effect on body condition score, dry matter intake, blood metabolites, milk yield, or milk fat and protein contents, but BS-fed cows had significantly higher levels of milk urea nitrogen compared with SS cows. Cows fed SS (31 d) tended to have a shorter interval from calving to first ovulation than cows fed AS (43 d) or BS (38 d). The incidence of double first ovulations was higher in cows fed SS (46%) compared with those fed BS (0%). Treatment had no effect on LH pulse frequency or amplitude, ovarian dynamics, or progesterone and estradiol concentrations during the observed estrous cycle. Energy balance did not differ among cows fed the 3 diets. Overall, dietary starch source and concentration had little effect on productivity or metabolic status of postpartum cows.  相似文献

Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows averaging 566 +/- 43 kg of body weight and 83 +/- 49 d in lactation were assigned to treatments stratified by age, days in milk, and milk yield to evaluate the effects of feeding increasing levels of wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) on lactational performance and milk composition. Complete diets containing 0, 15, 30, or 45% of the total ration dry matter (DM) as WCGF were formulated to be 17.2% crude protein and 1.72 Mcal of NE(L) per kilogram of DM, and fed twice daily to individual cows in Calan gates for 15 wk. All diets had a positive metabolizable protein balance. WCGF did not alter DM intake, but feed intake variance tended to be more consistent among cows fed 15 and 30% WCGF (DM basis). Weight gain was numerically greatest for those cows receiving 45% WCGF. Efficiency of energy and protein utilization was not different among treatments. Milk components of fat, protein, and casein were not different among treatments. Milk urea nitrogen was greater for cows on WCGF. Serum urea nitrogen was greatest in cows fed diets containing 15 and 45% WCGF. Serum insulin was lowest in the groups receiving 30 and 45% WCGF, but serum glucose and total protein were unaffected. The concentration of the ruminal volatile fatty acid, valerate, was greater in cows on the WCGF diet and highest in cows fed 30% WCGF. Ruminal ammonia was greatest in cows receiving 30% WCGF. It was estimated that 18.6% of the dietary DM fed as WCGF as a replacement for both portions of the concentrate and the forage in similar diets would have maximized milk yield without negatively affecting milk composition or feed efficiency.  相似文献

Eight intact multiparous cows and four ruminally and duodenally cannulated primiparous cows were fed four diets in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design: 1) 17% forage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) with brown midrib corn silage (BMRCS), 2) 21% forage NDF with BMRCS, 3) 17% forage NDF with conventional corn silage (CCS), and 4) 21% forage NDF with CCS. Diets contained 17.4% crude protein and 38.5% NDF. Each period consisted of 4 wk for intact cows and 2 wk for cannulated cows. For intact cows, DM intake was higher for BMRCS than CCS, and milk urea N was higher for 21 than 17% forage NDF. Milk protein yield tended to be higher and milk urea N lower for cows fed BMRCS than those fed CCS. Milk yield and milk protein percentage were similar among treatments. For the cannulated cows, ruminal mat consistency was similar among treatments. Based on a 72 h in situ incubation, BMRCS was lower in indigestible NDF than CCS. The BMRCS resulted in a higher proportion of ruminal propionate than CCS. Cows fed 21% forage NDF had a higher proportion of acetate and a lower proportion of propionate than cows fed 17% forage NDF. The total tract digestibility of nutrients and efficiency of bacterial N synthesis were similar among treatments, except that BMRCS resulted in lower intestinal fatty acid digestibility than CCS, and 17% forage NDF tended to result in higher total tract fatty acid digestibility than 21% forage NDF. Ruminal NDF digestibility was similar among dietary treatments. The increased milk production observed from feeding BMRCS in some studies may be explained by higher DM intake rather than increased total tract digestibility of the diets.  相似文献

In the cow, inadequate concentrations of progesterone during gestation may lead to an abrupt termination of pregnancy. The primary organ involved in progesterone catabolism is the liver, which contains an abundance of cytochrome P450 isozymes (EC 1.14.14.1; mixed-function monooxygenases). The objectives of the current experiment were to determine the effect of feeding 2 isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets, formulated to cause divergent insulin secretion, on hepatic cytochrome P450 2C (CYP2C) and 3A (CYP3A) activity as well as the resulting biological half-life of progesterone. Twenty-two Holstein cows averaging 80 ± 7 d in milk were randomly assigned to either a high cornstarch diet or a high fiber diet in a crossover experimental design consisting of two 14-d periods. Dry matter intake, milk yield, milk lactose yield, and milk lactose percentage were similar between the 2 diets. Milk fat yield and milk fat percentage were higher in cows fed the high fiber diet, whereas milk protein yield tended to be higher and milk protein percentage was higher in cows fed the high cornstarch diet. Energy balance tended to be improved by 57% in cows consuming the high cornstarch diet. Insulin concentrations at the time of liver biopsy (3.16 ± 0.04 h post-feeding) were increased by 44% in cows consuming the high cornstarch diet compared with cows consuming the high fiber diet. Cytochrome P450 2C activity was decreased by 45%, whereas CYP3A activity tended to be lowered by 34% in cows consuming the high cornstarch diet. Cytochrome P450 2C mRNA expression tended to be decreased by 21% in cows fed the high cornstarch diet, whereas CYP3A mRNA expression was not different between the dietary treatments. The fractional rate constant of progesterone decay was not different between the 2 diets; however, the half-life of progesterone tended to be longer in cows fed the high cornstarch diet compared with cows fed the high fiber diet (85 vs. 64 min, respectively). In summary, cows consuming the high cornstarch diet had increased insulin concentrations and lower hepatic CYP2C and CYP3A activity and tended to have a longer progesterone half-life compared with cows consuming the high fiber diet. Feeding diets that stimulate insulin secretion could alter progesterone clearance during lactation, when dairy cows have increased rates of progesterone inactivation because of high energy demands and increased DMI.  相似文献

Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 18) were fed a total mixed ration containing corn silage, corn grain, whole cottonseed, soybean meal, dried distillers grains, and chopped bermudagrass hay (control) or same diet plus Ca salts of long-chain fatty acids (2.2% of diet DM) for the first 60 d postpartum. Predicted energy balance was calculated from DM intake, milk yield and composition, and BW. On d 25 postpartum, cows were injected with 25 mg of prostaglandin F2 alpha and treated for 15 d with an intravaginal device containing 1.9 g progesterone. Profiles of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-prostaglandin F2 alpha (d 1 to 21) and plasma triglycerides (d 7 to 60) were similar between groups. Average number of follicles, determined by ultrasonography prior to d 25, tended to differ between groups; controls had more 3- to 5-mm and fewer 6- to 9-mm follicles than the group of fat-fed cows. Basal, smoothed mean concentration, and average luteinizing hormone amplitude, determined by 10-min samples for 8 h on d 10, were not significantly different between groups. Increasing predicted energy balance was associated with increased pulse amplitude and diameter of the largest follicle on d 10. During the progesterone treatment period and the postprogesterone treatment estrous cycle, cows fed fat had greater numbers of 3- to 5-mm and greater than 15-mm follicles. In conclusion, feeding fat did not influence 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-prostaglandin F2 alpha or luteinizing hormone dynamics but did alter the average number of follicles within different size classes and the diameter of largest and second largest follicle after progesterone treatment.  相似文献

Plasma lipoproteins from lactating dairy cows fed 0 or 7% supplemental fat were examined for their composition and ability to stimulate luteal cell progesterone production in vitro. Ultracentrifugation was utilized to isolate blood lipoproteins, and heparin affinity chromatography allowed separation of lipoprotein fractions based on the presence (low density lipoproteins) or absence of apolipoprotein B (high density lipoproteins). A portion of high density lipoproteins was fractionated by size, utilizing gel filtration chromatography. Slaughterhouse corpora lutea were dissociated, and plasma lipoproteins were added to the luteal cells on d 3 of culture and incubated for 48 h. In Experiment 1, blood was collected from heifers fed a diet that was not supplemented with fat. The addition of cholesterol from large, high density lipoproteins with a high cholesterol to protein ratio to luteal cultures increased progesterone production by an average of 17% compared with the addition of cholesterol from small, high density lipoproteins with a low cholesterol to protein ratio. In Experiment 2, electrophoretic mobility, apolipoprotein composition, and size of lipoproteins from control and fat-supplemented cows were similar. Lipoproteins from cows assigned to either a control or fat-supplemented diet showed no difference in their ability to stimulate progesterone production. Increased plasma progesterone concentration in lactating dairy cows fed supplemental fat does not appear to be mediated by alterations in lipoprotein composition.  相似文献

The effects of whole cottonseed (WCS) in the diet and the administration of bovine somatotropin (bST) on ovarian follicular dynamics and plasma progesterone (P4) concentrations were examined in cows during a period of synchronized follicular growth. Lactating Holstein cows (n = 28) were randomly assigned to treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Diets consisted of WCS (15% of dry matter) or no WCS, and bST at a dose of 0 or 208 mg/14 d. Dietary treatments began within 24 h of calving and bST treatments began within 7 d postpartum. Cows received GnRH at 65 +/- 3 d postpartum (d 0), PGF2alpha, (d 7), a second dose of GnRH (d 9), and were inseminated 16 h later (d 10). Ovarian changes were monitored daily by ultrasonography from d 0 to 9. On d 9,93% of cows had a preovulatory follicle and 86% ovulated. For Class 2 (6 to 9 mm) follicles, a diet x bST interaction was detected, with bST stimulating Class 2 follicles in cows fed WCS, but not in cows on the control diet. Neither diet nor bST affected numbers of Class 1 (2 to 5 mm) or Class 3 (> or = 10 mm) follicles or sizes of the subordinate and dominant follicles. During the luteal phase of the cycle, lactating cows fed WCS tended to have elevated concentrations of plasma P4, whereas bST was without effect. Plasma concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were increased in cows fed WCS. Number and diameter of corpora lutea did not differ among treatments.  相似文献

In six cows, twice daily administration of 100 IU corticotropin for 3.5 days during the follicular phase delayed the preovulatory luteinizing hormone surge and onset of behavioral estrus. Corticotropin increased progesterone and decreased estradiol and basal luteinizing hormone concentrations of blood. Following corticotropin withdrawal, a shortened period of behavioral estrus (50% of control) was accompanied by an apparent luteinizing hormone surge and ovulation. To ascertain if these effects were caused by the elevated corticosteroid concentrations induced by corticotropin, we infused intravenously four heifers with cortisol sodium succinate. During this infusion, luteinizing hormone surge and estrous behavior were inhibited; however, estradiol and basal luteinizing hormone concentrations were not affected. Furthermore, there was no luteinizing hormone surge, ovulation, or behavioral estrus after cessation of cortisol treatment. These results are consistent with a role for corticosteroids in mediating inhibitory effects on reproduction produced by corticotropin administration.  相似文献

Forty-eight Holstein cows were fed one of four diets containing 12.5% crude protein (negative control); 15.5% crude protein with untreated soybean meal; 15.5% crude protein with formaldehyde (.3%)-treated soybean meal; or 18% crude protein (positive control). Diets were 60% concentrate, 22% corn silage, 14% alfalfa hay, and 4% beet pulp (dry matter). Data were collected during the first 200 d of lactation. Dry matter intake, milk, and milk component yields did not differ among cows fed the untreated soybean meal, treated soybean meal, and positive control diets. Cows fed negative control diet consumed less dry matter and produced less milk than cows fed the other diets. Milk protein yield was lower for cows fed the negative control diet compared with the other diets. Nonprotein nitrogen content of milk increased as dietary protein increased.  相似文献

Seventy-eight Holstein cows alternately were assigned at calving to receive beta-carotene supplementation or act as controls to determine effects of beta-carotene on reproduction and carotene, luteinizing hormone, progesterone, insulin, glucose, and glucagon concentrations in blood plasma. Cows were fed a corn silage-based complete ration. Biweekly jugular blood samples were collected beginning the week after parturition through 90 days. At day 30, supplemented cows received 600 mg synthetic beta-carotene daily for 60 days. Plasma carotene reached a peak of 2.45 micrograms/ml compared to 1.50 micrograms/ml in controls. Supplementation significantly increased plasma carotene but had no effect on luteinizing hormone, progesterone, insulin, glucose, glucagon, or reproductive measures. Days to first heat, days to first breeding, days open, and services per conception averaged 74, 74, 95, and 1.7 for supplemented cows and 64, 76, 102, and 1.9 for control cows. Progesterone increased as lactation progressed. Somatic cells were not different between supplemented and control cows. Supplementation of beta-carotene did not improve reproductive efficiency or alter luteinizing hormone, progesterone, insulin, glucose, or glucagon in blood plasma or affect somatic cells in milk.  相似文献

Two experiments evaluated the influence of altering the concentrations of progesterone during the development of the ovulatory follicle on the composition of the follicular fluid, circulating LH and PGF metabolite (PGFM), and expression of endometrial progesterone receptor and estrogen receptor-α. In both experiments, the estrous cycles were presynchronized (GnRH and progesterone insert followed by insert removal and PGF 7 d later, and GnRH after 48 h) and cows were then enrolled in 1 of 2 treatments 7 d later (study d −16): high progesterone (HP) or low progesterone (LP). In experiment 1 (n = 19), cows had their estrous cycle synchronized starting on study d −9 (GnRH and progesterone insert on d −9, and insert removal and PGF on d −2). In experiment 2 (n = 25), cows were submitted to the same synchronization protocol as in experiment 1, but had ovulation induced with GnRH on study d 0. In experiment 1, plasma was sampled on d −4 and analyzed for concentrations of LH; the dominant follicle was aspirated on d 0 and the fluid analyzed for concentrations of progesterone, estradiol, and free and total IGF-1. In experiment 2, follicular development and concentrations of progesterone and estradiol in plasma were evaluated until study d 16. Uterine biopsies were collected on d 12 and 16 for progesterone receptor and estrogen receptor-α protein abundance. An estradiol/oxytocin challenge for PGFM measurements in plasma was performed on d 16. In experiments 1 and 2, LP cows had lower plasma concentrations of progesterone and greater concentrations of estradiol, and had larger ovulatory follicle diameter (20.4 vs. 17.2 mm) at the end of the synchronization protocol than HP cows. Concentration of LH tended to be greater for LP than HP cows (0.98 vs. 0.84 ng/mL). The dominant follicle of LP cows had greater concentration of estradiol (387.5 vs. 330.9 ng/mL) and a lower concentration of total IGF-1 (40.9 vs. 51.7 ng/mL) than that of HP cows. In experiment 2, estradiol and progesterone concentrations did not differ between treatments from d 0 to 16; however, the proportion of cows with a short luteal phase tended to increase in LP than HP (25 vs. 0%). Concentrations of PGFM were greater for LP than HP. Uterine biopsies had a greater abundance of progesterone receptor, and tended to have less estrogen receptor-α abundance on d 12 compared with d 16. An interaction between treatment and day of collection was detected for estrogen receptor-α because of an earlier increase in protein abundance on d 12. Reduced concentrations of progesterone during the development of the ovulatory follicle altered follicular dynamics and follicular fluid composition, increased basal LH concentrations, and prematurely increased estrogen receptor-α abundance and exacerbated PGF release in the subsequent estrous cycle.  相似文献

Prolonged dietary energy restriction has been shown to influence the secretion of ovarian hormones and follicular development. Energy balance affects the ability of the cow to support a functional reproductive system during early lactation. Follicular aspiration is a tool that can be used to assess the impact of dietary energy and stage of lactation on follicle development in dairy cattle. Follicular aspiration was conducted twice weekly from d 30 to 100 postpartum in cows fed either 104 or 80% of NRC energy requirements. Oocyte numbers recovered increased linearly from d 30 to 100 postpartum. Cows on high energy diets produced more high quality oocytes, but also produced more poor quality oocytes than cows fed the lower energy diet. Follicles < 5 mm predominated throughout. Cows in early (d 28) and mid (d 117) lactation were used to assess stage of lactation effects on serum and follicular fluid hormones, and quality of oocytes recovered by follicular aspiration procedures for 10 wk. Serum IGF-1 decreased in early lactation cows, but increased in midlactation cows. Follicular fluid progesterone in early lactation cows decreased from 275 to 235 ng/ml, whereas in midlactation cows it increased from 65 to 550 ng/ml at aspiration wk 10. The percentage of high quality ova was higher in early lactation cows (11%) than midlactation cows (6%), but fell to 1% by aspiration wk 7 and increased to 10% by wk 10, whereas percentage of high quality ova in midlactation cows steadily declined to 2% by wk 10. Milk yield and energy balance affect patterns of folliculogenesis in lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

A total of 117 Holstein cows were in two trials to determine how reduction in concentration of dietary protein influences early lactation. Treatments were feeding 17% crude protein for 3 mo or reducing dietary crude protein from 17 to 13.5% after 1st or 2nd mo postpartum. Results were similar in both trials. Reducing concentration of dietary crude protein to 13.5% at 1 mo postpartum tended to decrease intake of dry matter during the 2nd and 3rd mo of lactation. Milk production of multiparous, but not primiparous cows, was decreased. Dry matter intake and milk production did not decrease following a drop in concentration of dietary protein at 2 mo postpartum. Returns over feed costs were reduced by feeding the diet with 17% crude protein to primiparous cows longer than 1 mo or to multiparous cows longer than 2 mo postpartum. Milk composition, body weight change, and reproductive performance were not affected by treatment.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to characterize the estrous cycle of cows with similar proportions of Holstein genetics, similar genetic merit for milk production traits, but with good (Fert+) or poor (Fert-) genetic merit for fertility traits. In total, 37 lactating cows were enrolled on a protocol to synchronize estrus. Nineteen Fert+ and 12 Fert- cows that successfully ovulated a dominant follicle and established a corpus luteum underwent daily transrectal ultrasonography. Blood sampling was carried out at 8-h intervals from d 0 to 6 and from d 15 to ovulation, and once daily from d 7 to 15. Blood samples were analyzed for progesterone, estradiol, follicle stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. Estrus behavior was recorded using neck activity collars and mounting pads. The Fert+ cows tended to have fewer follicular waves (2.2 vs. 2.7) and had a shorter estrous cycle (21.0 vs. 25.1 d) than Fert- cows. We observed no effect of genotype on day of first-wave emergence or day of first-wave dominant follicle peak diameter, but the peak diameter of the first-wave dominant follicle tended to be larger in Fert- cows. During the first 13 d of the cycle, Fert+ cows developed a corpus luteum that was 16% larger than that in Fert- cows. Circulating progesterone concentrations were 34% greater in Fert+ than in Fert- cows (5.15 vs. 3.84ng/mL, respectively) from d 5 to 13. During the final follicular wave, the interval from preovulatory follicle emergence to ovulation and the interval from preovulatory follicle dominance to ovulation were similar in both genotypes. Maximum preovulatory follicle diameter was larger in Fert+ than Fert- cows (17.9 vs. 16.8mm, respectively); however, circulating concentrations of estradiol were not different between genotypes. A greater proportion of Fert- cows ovulated to a silent heat than Fert+ cows (22 vs. 2%, respectively). Of cows that showed behavioral estrus, Fert+ cows had 41% greater mean activity count; however, no difference was seen in mounting behavior between genotypes. These results demonstrate, for the first time, that genetic merit for fertility has pronounced effects on corpus luteum development, progesterone concentration, preovulatory follicle diameter, and behavioral estrus.  相似文献
