The practical implementation of a trial large-scale asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching system and its packaging technologies are described. The architecture of the ATM switching system is discussed with an emphasis on system scalability. A building block architecture in which switching capacity can be expanded in a modular fashion is introduced. The design of the ATM switching system, including the ATM switch element, is described. The implementation of the VLSIs for the ATM switch which realize a highly modular system is explained. Bit-slice techniques are effectively used to realize a high-speed switch element as a CMOS VLSI chipset. An edge-to-edge orthogonal packaging technique is also presented  相似文献

The architecture of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching system for prototype applications is presented. The general concept to upgrade the existing ISDN switch with an ATM module is introduced, and the building blocks of this ATM module are described in detail. Switching of ATM cells is performed in a single application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). ASICs can be cascaded to form large switching modules. Peripheral modules interface the ATM switch to external transmission systems and perform all ATM-related functions, including means for redundancy of the switching network. The redundancy scheme tolerates single failures without affecting the user information. A switching network architecture is shown to be capable of fulfilling varying demands in terms of the number of ports for ATM switches and cross connects, concentrators, and multiplexers  相似文献

Legacy local area network (LAN) technologies based on shared media concepts are not adequate for the growth of a large-scale picture archiving and communication system (PACS) in a client-server architecture. First, an asymmetric network load, due to the requests of a large number of PACS clients for only a few main servers, should be compensated by communication links to the servers with a higher bandwidth compared to the clients. Secondly, as the number of PACS nodes increases, the network throughput should not measurably cut production. These requirements can easily be fulfilled using switching technologies. Here asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is clearly one of the hottest topics in networking because the ATM architecture provides integrated support for a variety of communication services, and it supports virtual networking. On the other hand, most of the imaging modalities are not yet ready for integration into a native ATM network. For a lot of nodes already joining an Ethernet, a cost-effective and pragmatic way to benefit from the switching concept would be a combined ATM/Ethernet switching environment. This incorporates an incremental migration strategy with the immediate benefits of high-speed, high-capacity ATM (for servers and high-sophisticated display workstations), while preserving elements of the existing network technologies. In addition, Ethernet switching instead of shared media Ethernet improves the performance considerably. The LAN emulation (LANE) specification by the ATM forum defines mechanisms that allow ATM networks to coexist with legacy systems using any data networking protocol. Generally, the limitations of optical delay line and link capacity limit the switching efficiency in the photonic asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch. Under the constraints, a smart photonic ATM switch designed for high-speed optical backbone network should have some fast switching strategies so that the congestion can be avoided or reduced. In this paper, we mill propose a novel smart photonic ATM switch architecture with a novel compression strategy. In the smart architecture, while more than two frames are destined for the same destination, the losers will be queued and compressed to reduce the degree of congestion. Therefore, not only the total switching time (TST) can be reduced but also the scarce buffer is able to store more incoming cells. To meet the high-speed switching performance, a simple and efficient compression decision algorithm (CDA) is proposed. The timing of employing compression strategy and the saturated performance of proposed strategy are analyzed. Simulation results show that compared to the conventional photonic ATM switch without compression strategy, the proposed strategy offers a much better performance in terms of queueing delay  相似文献
