Use of the Lorenz Curve to Quantify Statistical Nonuniformity of Sediment Transport Rate

The Lorenz curve and the Gini index are statistical tools that have been widely used to quantify nonuniformity in economics, ecology, and medicine, but have apparently not been previously applied in hydraulic engineering. In this work, the Lorenz curve was applied to the analysis of sediment transport data from several experiments with natural and lightweight solid particles. The distributions of instantaneous sediment transport rate data have been analyzed, leading to some interesting observations: (1) the values are quite nonuniformly distributed, with a significant proportion of zero values at the lowest sediment transport rates; and (2) the distributions of the values considering only samples with nonzero values are still quite nonuniform; yet the variability of the Gini index with the average sediment transport rate is much smaller than that obtained for the complete data samples, indicating a major role of intermittency in determining the nonuniformity of sediment transport.

The Effect of Social Comparison Information on the Life Satisfaction of Frail Older Persons.

In this study, the authors examined the effects of social comparison on the life satisfaction of 455 community-dwelling older persons. These older persons were confronted with a fictitious interview with either an upward or a downward target. After downward comparison, older persons felt more satisfied with their lives than after upward comparison, especially those who had higher levels of frailty. These effects were only found with lower levels of identification. Apparently, downward comparison only serves its self-enhancing function on life satisfaction among frail older persons when they perceive the comparison target as different from themselves. The perils of outperformance: Sensitivity about being the target of a threatening upward comparison.

Outperforming others, although privately satisfying, can be a source of interpersonal strain. This article presents the framework of a major form of outperformance-related distress, which we label sensitivity about being the target of a threatening upward comparison (STTUC). To become STTUC, an individual must believe that another person is making an upward comparison against the self and feels threatened by the contrast in status. The outperformer must also experience concern about some facet of the other's response, and this concern may be focused on the other, the self, or the relationship. In addition to offering new predictions about outperformance-related distress, the STTUC framework unites many previously disconnected findings on topics such as fear of success, envy, self-presentation, and self-evaluation maintenance. The role of argumentation and comparison processes in choice shifts: Another assessment.

Recent studies which have explored the role of arguments and comparison processes in group-induced shifts in choice have generally supported the arguments position. The difficulty in completely separating these two processes has, however, precluded a clean-cut test. The present study attempted to effect a complete separation by orthogonally manipulating both the nature of the comparison norm (others' positions) and the number of relevant arguments as part of the same within-subject design. Results strongly supported the role of interpersonal comparison but offered no support for arguments. The overall pattern of the data contradicted assumptions of a more general value theory, from which both comparison and arguments theory were initially derived.
