Easy-to-use audio/video authoring tools play a crucial role in moving multimedia software from research curiosity to mainstream applications. However, research in multimedia authoring systems has rarely been documented in the literature. This paper describes the design and implementation of an interactive video authoring system called Zodiac, which employs an innovative edit history abstraction to support several unique editing features not found in existing commercial and research video editing systems. Zodiac provides users a conceptually clean and semantically powerful branching history model of edit operations to organize the authoring process, and to navigate among versions of authored documents. In addition, by analyzing the edit history, Zodiac is able to reliably detect a composed video stream's shot and scene boundaries, which facilitates interactive video browsing. Zodiac also features a video object annotation capability that allows users to associate annotations to moving objects in a video sequence. The annotations themselves could be text, image, audio, or video. Zodiac is built on top of MMFS, a file system specifically designed for interactive multimedia development environments, and implements an internal buffer manager that supports transparent lossless compression/decompression. Shot/scene detection, video object annotation, and buffer management all exploit the edit history information for performance optimization.  相似文献

This paper discusses multimedia and hypermedia modeling, authoring and formatting tools, presenting the proposals of the HyperProp system and comparing them to related work. It also highlights several research challenges that still need to be addressed. Moreover, it stresses the importance of document logical structuring and considers the use of compositions in order to represent context relations, synchronization relations, derivation relations and task relations in hypermedia systems. It discusses temporal and spatial synchronization among multimedia objects and briefly presents the HyperProp graphical authoring and formatting tools. This paper describes the progress to date on the development of a medical diagnostic system for veterinary medicine. The system is being designed to compare and combine methodologies ranging from an implementation of the doctor's decision making protocols to classical statistical, machine learning and evidence combination schemes. Abstract Multimedia authoring software has a number of features that, given teacher support, should provide conditions that help pupils create material that genuinely reflects their understanding. This paper reviews the ways in which use of this technology may also support improvements in assessment. Drawing on research findings it describes how pupil-produced multimedia documents can reveal aspects of performance that traditional tests may not recognise. If such assessment is to be accepted at the policy level, a shared set of criteria for achievement must be developed in terms of technical manipulation and content exposition. Lines of enquiry for further investigation of multimedia authoring, pupil learning and assessment are proposed.  相似文献

Although the distributed multimedia information system is getting popular nowadays, existing database systems do not offer adequate support to structural nor behavioral extension of multimedia objects. Moreover, the multifaceted nature of multimedia data has seldom been investigated. Besides the flexibility for multimedia authoring tools, dynamic extension and multifacet modeling can in general ease the task on integrating the multimedia information of heterogeneous formats over a distributed network. This paper presents the support of dynamic extension and multifacet modeling of multimedia objects in a client-server, object-role database system called DOOR. The resultant system, with multimedia functionalities, is named as DOOR/MM (DOOR with multimedia extensions). First, the underlying data model for DOOR is summarized. We then present the extension of the data model, by means of meta-object protocol (MOP), to implement the metaclasses for multimedia objects. In DOOR, objects are structured as a tree of roles. Each role may carry different properties and interact with other roles cooperatively. An object may acquire or drop multiple roles during its lifetime. Structural and behavioral extensions of multimedia objects are achieved by dynamic role playing. Multifaceted interfaces of an multimedia object are modeled by means of views on roles. In particular, we discuss different ways of using views to model different abstraction levels of the heterogeneous multimedia resources. Throughout the paper, examples such as text, bitmap, MIDI, and 3D graphic objects are used to demonstrate the significance of our approach.  相似文献

The relatively unexciting issue of screen design has often been neglected in CAL or CAT. Changing technology and user requirements may make it more important. Authoring systems (languages, methodologies, software tools) need to satisfy certain requirements at different stages of the authoring process. Such requirements, relating to screen management, aesthetics, specification and documentation, implementation, maintenance and portability, are considered. Some can be met by adopting certain standards and techniques, and by the provision of software tools. Certain solutions are suggested, in particular, the software tools for screen design provided by a particular authoring system. COMBAT are described. These directly correspond to specification and documentation techniques, assist in implementation and maintenance, and help in the adoption of good design standards.  相似文献

This paper describes architecture and implementation of a multimedia authoring environment which features content-based management of video.The goal of our work is to provide multimedia application developers with a useful video database, where they gather video materials from various sources, store them in a organized format, and use them in multimedia applications. The principal design concepts are that (1) it should have a flexible means to store video materials in a organized format so that video clips can be retrieved easily, and that (2) it should have a view to each application so that various applications can share the video materials.To meet these requirements we designed a multimedia authoring system based on a video object model. The video object model features (1) a method to attach annotations not only to scenes but also to things shot in the video, and (2) a method to define video clips independently from physical video data.Our experiences in using the system to develop a multimedia CAI application are also described to show the advantages of our system.  相似文献

With growing bandwidths in the Internet and seemingly unlimited storage capacities on web servers, media became more and more important in the daily use of the World Wide Web. While about ten years ago only text and images with small file sizes (and as a result small resolutions) could be used, it is possible to watch high quality multimedia presentations nowadays. But those rarely exist because of tedious to learn authoring tools. A specialization to one main medium, in our case video, allows creating efficient authoring tools using well known paradigms. This work introduces an authoring tool called SIVA Producer. An iterative process for improving the usability of the authoring tool is described. Furthermore, a distinction of the terms “interactive video”, “annotated video”, “non-linear video” and “hypervideo” is given.  相似文献

Earlier approaches to execute generalized alternative/repetitive commands of Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) attempt the selection of guards in a sequential order. Also, these implementations are based on either shared memory or message passing multiprocessor systems. In contrast, we propose an implementation of generalized guarded commands using the data-driven model of computation. A significant feature of our implementation is that it attempts the selection of the guards of a process in parallel. We prove that our implementation is faithful to the semantics of the generalized guarded commands. Further, we have simulated the implementation using discrete-event simulation and measured various performance parameters. The measured parameters are helpful in establishing the fairness of our implementation and its superiority, in terms of efficiency and the parallelism exploited, over other implementations. The simulation study is also helpful in identifying various issues that affect the performance of our implementation. Based on this study, we have proposed an adaptive algorithm which dynamically tunes the extent of parallelism in the implementation to achieve an optimum level of performance.The first author's work was supported by a MICRONET, Network Centers of Excellence, research grant. With the diversity of usage conditions affecting the consumption of multimedia content, the adaptation of dynamic and interactive multimedia presentations is essential. The challenge consists in allowing a multimedia presentation to adapt in all its dimensions: spatially, temporally and interactively, without lessening its attractiveness and still giving the author the control over adapted versions. Additionally, the authoring of adaptable content should not increase the complexity of authoring. To address this challenge, we propose to transpose the concept of scalability to the world of multimedia documents by introducing the so-called Scalable MSTI model. In this paper, we show the properties of this model and how, from an authoring point of view, scalable multimedia documents can be created to address a wide range of usage conditions.  相似文献

Recently maturing technologies for digital multimedia and the Internet exhibit a powerful synergy with the potential to provide a whole range of new applications and tools. Not only do multimedia and Internet technologies offer enhancements to one another, but their combination suggests entirely new communication paradigms. This paper reviews the state of the art in Internet multimedia from the perspectives of the developer, the network administrator, the content provider and the user, and then investigates some of the up-and-coming application areas: participatory publishing, enriched multimedia databases, integration of the WWW with broadcast media, and universal messaging systems. Remaining challenges, such as missing authoring features, multimedia information management, network latency, and browsing issues, are then discussed.  相似文献

组合性是形式描述研究的基本问题,便于大型程序的设计、分析、测试和复用.为了方便用户编制大型多媒体系统的时序描述,组合模型是必须的.目前,这样的模型有基于语言的、基于图形的、基于时间区间的和面向对象的等等.但是,这些模型描述层次过低,很难支持两个多媒体节目之间的时序描述.通过引入单位流的概念和扩展两种时序关系,研究一种多媒体节目时序描述的结构化技术,使复杂的多媒体节目易于理解,以方便用户运用组合方法把一些可以复用于不同多媒体节目的节目模块进行组合设计.  相似文献
