The low velocity impact behavior of three layer thermoplastic laminates consisting of woven glass fiber and polypropylene has been investigated for two different fiber volume configurations. Panels with configurations of 50/50 and 20/80 in the warp and fill directions were subjected to low velocity impact energies between 4 and 16 J using an instrumented dropping weight impact tower. Load vs. displacement plots showed the excellent energy absorbing capabilities exhibited by the woven composites. Both configurations dissipated approximately 75% of the 16 J incident impact energy. An energy-balance model was used to successfully predict the impact response of the woven thermoplastic composites. The impact damaged plates were tested under four point bend (4 PB) loading conditions. Results showed a reduction in flexural strength and modulus as the impact energy increased. A simple compression molding damage repair process was applied to the 16 J impacted composite plates. 4 PB testing of the repaired samples revealed a significant recovery in the flexural strength and modulus of the thermoplastic woven composite with both fiber configurations.  相似文献

The demand for protective measures for structures is on the rise due to the increasing possibility of structural damage due to threats such as natural disasters, collision of vehicles, and blast and ballistic impacts. Application of an elastomer as a composite material with other base materials such as aluminium, steel and concrete has been considered as one of the measures to mitigate such threats. However, very limited work has been conducted in this area, especially on the feasibility of polyurea (elastomer) as a composite material against low velocity impacts. The focus of this research is to investigate the behaviour of polyurea coated composite aluminium plates subjected to rigid blunt-nosed projectile impact. AA5083-H116 aluminium alloy plates with polyurea coatings of 6 mm and 12 mm thickness were investigated. A blunt cylindrical projectile of high strength steel travelling in the velocity range of 5–15 m/s impacted at the centre of the 300 mm × 300 mm square plates. A polyurea coating was used to absorb part of the impact energy and provide protection to the plates as an energy damping material through application on the impact side of the plates. In addition, uncoated aluminium plates of the same thickness were used in the test program. A gas gun mechanism was used to fire a 5 kg projectile, and laser displacement monitoring equipment was used to record the out-of-plane deformation history of the plate during the impact. The complete test setup has been modelled numerically using the advanced finite element (FE) code LS-DYNA. The models were validated with the experimental results. Deformation time histories obtained from both the experimental and numerical studies for the plates were used to compare the ability of polyurea to effectively mitigate the damage resulting from low velocity impact. The polyurea coated plates showed a considerable reduction in out-of-plane deformation when compared to the uncoated plates. These findings indicate that polyurea can be utilised as an efficient energy absorbing/damping material against low velocity impact damage.  相似文献

Knitted composites have higher failure deformation and energy absorption capacity under impact than other textile structural composites because of the yarn loop structures in knitted performs. Here we report the transverse impact behavior of a new kind of 3-D multi-structured knitted composite both in experimental and finite element simulation. The knitted composite is composed of two knitted fabrics: biaxial warp knitted fabric and interlock knitted fabric. The transverse impact behaviors of the 3-D knitted composite were tested with a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus. The load–displacement curves and damage morphologies were obtained to analyze the energy absorptions and impact damage mechanisms of the composite under different impact velocities. A unit-cell model based on the microstructure of the 3-D knitted composite was established to determine the composite deformation and damage when the composite impacted by a hemisphere-ended steel rod. Incorporated with the unit-cell model, a elasto-plastic constitute equation of the 3-D knitted composite and the critical damage area (CDA) failure theory of composites have been implemented as a vectorized user defined material law (VUMAT) for ABAQUS/Explicit. The load–displacement curves, impact deformations and damages obtained from FEM are compared with those in experimental. The good agreements of the comparisons prove the validity of the unit-cell model and user-defined subroutine VUMAT. This manifests the applicability of the VUMAT to characterization and design of the 3-D multi-structured knitted composite structures under other impulsive loading conditions.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to present an experimental study of impact and compression after impact (CAI) tests performed on composite laminate covered with a cork thermal shield (TS) intended for launchers fairing. Drop weight impact tests have been performed on composite laminate sheets with and without TS in order to study its effect on the impact damage. The results show the TS is a good mechanical protection towards impact as well as a good impact revealing material. Nevertheless, totally different damage morphology is obtained during the impact test with or without TS, and in particular at high impact energy, the delaminated area is larger with TS. Afterwards, CAI tests have been performed in order to evaluate the TS effect on the residual strength. The TS appears to increase the residual strength for a same impact energy, but at the same time, it presents a decrease in residual strength before observing delamination. In fact, during the impact tests with TS, invisible fibres’ breakages appear before delamination damage contrary to the impacts on the unshielded sheets.  相似文献

The damages of 3D orthogonal woven composite circular plate under quasi-static indentation and transverse impact were tested with Materials Test System (MTS) and modified split Hopkinson bar (SHPB) apparatus. The load vs. displacement curves during quasi-static penetration and impact were obtained to study the energy absorption of the composite plate. The fluctuation of the impact stress waves has been unveiled. Differences of the load-displacement curves between the quasi-static and impact loading are discussed. This work also aims at establishing a unit-cell model to analyze the damage of composites. A user material subroutine which named VUMAT for characterizing the constitutive relationship of the 3-D orthogonal woven composite and the damage evolution is incorporated with a finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit to simulate the impact damage process of the composite plates. From the comparison of the load-displacement curves and energy absorption curves of the composite plate between experimental and FEM simulation, it is shown that the unit-cell model of the 3D woven composite and the VUMAT combined with the ABAQUS/Explicit can calculate the impact responses of the circular plate precisely. Furthermore, the model can also be extended to simulate the impact behavior of the 3D woven composite structures.  相似文献

Simply supported, rectangular, composite plates subjected to in-plane compressive load have been investigated for ultimate strength. An efficient, semi-analytical method has been established based on large deflection theory and first order shear deformation theory. After damage initiation, linear degradation of the material properties has been applied to the affected region of a failed ply. Two different displacement fields have been examined for their influence on the strength predictions. The approach is validated against earlier advanced finite element calculations, and can be readily applied in specific design situations or to generate parametric design curves.  相似文献

This paper presents two modelling strategies for the simulation of low velocity impact induced damage onset and evolution in composite plates. Both the strategies use a global–local technique to refine the mesh in the impact zone in order to increase the accuracy in predicting the impact phenomena without affecting the computational cost. Cohesive elements are used to simulate the inter-lamina damage behaviour (delaminations) and Hashin’s failure criteria are adopted to predict the intra-lamina failure mechanisms. The two modelling strategies differ in terms of input parameters for the inter-lamina and intra-lamina damage evolution laws and in terms of modelling solutions in the impacted area. Comparisons between numerical and experimental results on composite plates subjected to different impact energies, according to the ASTM D7136 requirements, have been used to assess the peculiarities and the fields of application for the two proposed modelling strategies. Both the strategies have been tested by adopting the finite element code ABAQUS®. The different approaches to set the parameters of cohesive elements’ constitutive laws and Hashin’s criteria and the different choices made in quantifying the dependence of failure criteria on the finite elements’ average size have been taken into account.  相似文献

A plastic micro buckling approach is investigated in order to see whether it can be used to analytically predict the residual strength of carbon fiber sandwich structures.

A parametric study on impact damage resistance and residual strength of sandwich panels with carbon fiber-vinylester faces and PVC foam core is conducted. Two sandwich configurations are studied. The first configuration consists of thin faces and an intermediate density core, representative of a panel from a superstructure. The second configuration consists of thick faces and a high density core, representative of a panel from a hull. Two different impactor geometries are used. One spherical impactor and one pyramid shaped impactor are used in a drop weight rig to inflict low velocity impact damage of different energy levels in the face of the sandwich.

The damages achieved ranges from barely visible damages to penetration of one face. Residual strength is tested using in-plane compression of the sandwich plates either instrumented with strain gauges or monitored with digital speckle photography.  相似文献

This paper presents finite element analyses (FEA) on the transverse impact responses of 3-D circular braided composite tubes with the braiding angles of 15°, 30° and 45°. A finite element model of the braided composite tube was established at microstructure level to analyze the transverse impact behaviors. From the FEA results, the impact damage, deformation and stress distribution were obtained to analyze the damage mechanism. Stress propagation in lower braiding angle tubes was faster than that of the higher braiding angle. The impact responses of the braided composite tubes were also tested to obtain load–displacement curves and energy absorption for the comparisons with the FEA results. The impact damage and fracture morphology obtained from the FEA were in good agreement with the experimental results, which demonstrated the feasibility of the FEA model for the design of the braided tube.  相似文献

The present work focuses on vibration characteristics of damaged laminated composite plates. Damage is considered as a local reduction of anisotropic plate stiffness, and three damage factors (representing the damage severity, damage anisotropy, and damage location/area, respectively) are defined to describe damage status in the laminated composite plates. The analytical solutions are obtained by the perturbation method. A numerical analysis is conducted on the vibration of damaged laminated composited plates, and the effect of damage factors on the vibration characteristics is discussed. Results indicate that three damage factors have different influences on the vibration characteristics. Also, the modal curvatures and strain energy show higher damage sensitivity than the natural frequencies and displacement mode shapes. The perturbation-based vibration analysis developed in this study can be used to effectively evaluate the effect of damage on the vibration behavior of anisotropic plates and potentially identify the damage in the laminated plates.  相似文献

Abstract: This paper evaluates the transverse impact damage of a 3‐D biaxial spacer weft‐knitted composite using experimental results and complimentary finite element analysis. The load–displacement curves and damage morphologies during impact loading were obtained to analyse energy absorption and impact damage mechanisms of the knitted composite. A unit‐cell model based on the microstructure of the 3‐D knitted composite was established to calculate the deformation and damage evolution when the composite is impacted by a hemisphere‐ended steel rod. An elastoplastic constitutive equation is incorporated into the unit‐cell model and the critical damage area failure theory developed by Hahn and Tsai has been implemented as a user‐defined material law (VUMAT) for commercial available finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. The load–displacement curves, impact damages and impact energy absorption obtained from ABAQUS/Explicit are compared with those FROM experiments. The good agreement of the comparisons supports the validity of the unit‐cell model and user‐defined subroutine VUMAT. Low velocity barely visible impact damage (BVID) in laminated carbon composite structures has a major importance for aeronautical industries. This contribution leads with the development of finite element models to simulate the initiation and the propagation of internal damage inside a carbon composite structure due by a low velocity impact. Composite plates made from liquid resin infusion process (LRI) have been subjected to low energy impacts (around 25 J) using a drop weight machine. In the experimental procedure, the internal damage is evaluated using an infrared thermographic camera while the indentation depth of the face is measured by optical measurement technique. In a first time we developed a robust model using homogenised shells based on degenerated tri-dimensional brick elements and in a second time we decided to modelize the whole stacking sequence of homogeneous layers and cohesive interlaminar interfaces in order to compare and validate the obtained results. Both layer and interface damage initiation and propagation models based on the Hashin and the Benzeggagh-Kenane criteria have been used for the numerical simulations. Comparison of numerical results and experiments has shown the accuracy of the proposed models.  相似文献

In this paper fatigue crack growth in steel plates reinforced by using carbon fiber reinforced (CFRP) strips is investigated from the experimental, numerical and analytical point of view. Single edge notched tension (SENT) specimens were strengthened with different reinforcement configurations and tested at a stress ratio R of 0.4. Different initial damage levels were considered and the experimental results showed that the reinforcement application can effectively reduce the crack growth rate and significantly extend the fatigue life. Numerical models (finite elements) were also developed to evaluate the stress intensity factor (SIF) and the crack opening displacement (COD) profile. Based on the numerical results, an analytical model was proposed to predict the fatigue crack growth rate and the fatigue crack growth curves. The analytical results are validated by comparing the fatigue crack growth curves to the experimental ones.  相似文献

This paper presents a material model suitable for simulating the behavior of dry fabrics subjected to ballistic impact. The developed material model is implemented in a commercial explicit finite element (FE) software LS-DYNA through a user defined material subroutine (UMAT). The constitutive model is developed using data from uniaxial quasi-static and high strain rate tension tests, picture frame tests and friction tests. Different finite element modeling schemes using shell finite elements are used to study efficiency and accuracy issues. First, single FE layer (SL) and multiple FE layers (ML) were used to simulate the ballistic tests conducted at NASA Glenn Research Center (NASA-GRC). Second, in the multiple layer configuration, a new modeling approach called Spiral Modeling Scheme (SMS) was tried and compared to the existing Concentric Modeling Scheme (CMS). Regression analyses were used to fill missing experimental data – the shear properties of the fabric, damping coefficient and the parameters used in Cowper-Symonds (CS) model which account for strain rate effect on material properties, in order to achieve close match between FE simulations and experimental data. The difference in absorbed energy by the fabric after impact, displacement of fabric near point of impact, and extent of damage were used as metrics for evaluating the material model. In addition, the ballistic limits of the multi-layer fabrics for various configurations were also determined.  相似文献

为开展纤维金属层板(FML)低速冲击有限元数值仿真研究,改进了传统的连续损伤力学(CDM)模型,然后对FML落锤低速冲击试验进行数值仿真,并与实验结果进行对比验证。分别采用5.11 J 和10.33 J冲击能量对FML进行落锤低速冲击试验,得到冲击载荷、位移和能量时程曲线,分析FML的动态响应和失效模式。建立了考虑塑性应变、压缩刚度衰减特征和纤维拉伸断裂损伤的新CDM模型,描述S2-玻璃纤维/环氧树脂(S2-galss/epoxy)复合材料的损伤本构,并编写VUMAT子程序,通过ABAQUS/Explicit求解器对FML落锤冲击试验进行数值仿真。研究结果表明:低能量冲击条件下,FML背面主要为鼓包和裂纹等失效模式,位移峰值随冲击能量的提高而增加,冲击载荷峰值在穿透前也随冲击能量的提高而增加;采用改进的CDM模型描述FML中S2-galss/epoxy复合材料铺层后,有限元数值计算可以较好地预测FML低速冲击载荷下的动态响应;有限元数值仿真结果表明,FML中第2层复合材料铺层发生的纤维断裂损伤比第1层的更严重。  相似文献

The impact behavior of warp-knitted spacer fabrics (WKSFs) impregnated with shear thickening fluid (STF) under low-velocity impact loadings have been investigated from experimental and finite element analyses (FEA) approaches. From the experimental approach, the impact load–displacement curves have been obtained. It was observed that the WKSF impregnated with the STF composite material (the WKSF/STF composite) shows a higher stiffness and lower peak force than those of the WKSF under the same impact loadings. In FEA approach, the geometrical models of the WKSF and the WKSF/STF composite material were established based on the WKSF fabric architectures. The dynamic responses including the impact load–displacement curves and impact deformation of the samples were predicted based on finite element analyses at the microstructure level. It was found that the STF and the coupling effect between the STF fluid and fiber tows are the key factors which influence the cushioning behaviors of the composite. The energy absorption mechanisms include the buckling of the spacer finer tows and the thickening effect of the STF under impact loading. The WKSF/STF composite could be expected as a damping or energy-absorptive materials under impact loading.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of hypervelocity impact tests conducted on graphite/PEEK laminates. Both flat plate and circular cylinders were tested using aluminum spheres of varying size, travelling at velocities from 2–7 km/s. The experiments were conducted at several facilities using light gas guns. Normal and oblique angle impacts were investigated to determine the effect of impact angle, particle energy and laminate configuration on the material damage and ejecta plumes. Correlations were established between an energy parameter and the impact crater size, spallation damage and debris cone angle. Secondary damage resulting from the debris plume on adjacent composite structures was studied using high-speed photography and witness plates. It was observed that for hypervelocity impacts, the debris plume particles have sufficient energy to penetrate adjacent structures and cause major structural damage as well.  相似文献

Most spacecraft rely intensively on sandwich construction for external structures with multi layer thermal insulation where appropriate. Experience gained in ESA with various spacecraft (ROSETTA, METOP, ATV,…) covers a substantial range of materials and configurations. In this work, the applicability of simple damage equations (e.g. those presently used for single or Whipple shield ballistic limits) to more complex configurations (e.g. sandwich plates with and without MLI) is analyzed. The different sandwich configurations which were submitted to testing are reviewed, impact test results are presented and compared with impact reference data on single plates and Whipple shields. It has been found that sandwich panels have a better tolerance to hypervelocity impacts than monolithic structures. MLI placed in front of the sandwich panels contributes significantly to the overall protection performance in the range of the projectile diameters tested. The complexity of the sandwich structure is responsible for a considerable scatter in the test results. The predictors for Whipple shields applied to sandwich panels with and without MLI can only be considered on a case by case basis for risk assessment analysis.  相似文献

This work investigates damage caused by low velocity impact and quasi-static indentation loading in four different particle-toughened composite systems, and one untoughened system. For impact tests, a range of energies were used between 25 and 50 J. For QSI, coupons were interrupted at increasing loading point displacement levels from 2 to 5 mm to allow for monitoring of damage initiation and propagation. In both loading cases, non-destructive inspection techniques were used, consisting of ultrasonic C-scan and X-ray micro-focus computed tomography. These techniques are complemented with instrumentation to capture force–displacement data, whereby load-drops are associated with observed damage modes. Key results from this work highlight particular issues regarding strain-rate sensitivity of delamination development and an earlier onset of fibre fracture associated with particle-toughened systems. These issues, in addition to observations on the role of micro-scale events on damage morphology, are discussed with a focus on material development and material testing practices.  相似文献
