Neuroscientists have used a wireless receiver and electrodes implanted in a rat's brain to steer the rodent anywhere they want it to go. Suppose you want to guide a small robotic system through collapsed buildings to search for survivors. In pure robotics, this is a tough job. But remotely guided rats carrying wireless video cameras fit the bill nicely. The brain implant enables a trained rat to be instructed to turn right, turn left, or move forward according to keystrokes from a laptop as far as 500 meters away. Electrodes are implanted in three areas of the brain: one in the medial forebrain bundle (MFB), which is associated with feelings of pleasure, and one each in the left and right somatosensory cortex, part of the brain that handles the sense of touch. In particular, the electrodes are implanted in the parts of the cortex that sense the rat' s whiskers.  相似文献

As an experiment in protocol optimizations, the authors undertook to improve the performance of a stateless protocol, namely the user datagram protocol (UDP) in the 4.3 BSD Unix kernel. The authors describe the successful optimizations that were done, along with measurements that shows a UDP performance improvement of between 25-35% on CISC and RISC systems, and overall kernal improvement of between 12% and 18%  相似文献

The application of an object-oriented approach to modeling the application and presentation layer of the human-machine interfaces in a telecommunications management network architecture is described. It is argued that a significant simplification in information interchange between human and machine occurs when the machine has a model of the user to which it can conform. Mobile computers, such as cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs), have dramatically increased in sophistication. At the same time, the desire of consumers for portability limits batters size. As a result, many researchers have targeted hardware and software energy optimization. However, most of these techniques focus on compute-intensive applications rather than interactive applications, which are dominant in mobile computers. These systems frequently use graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to handle human-computer interaction. This paper is the first to explore how GUIs can be designed to improve system energy efficiency. We investigate how GUI design approaches should be changed to improve system. Energy efficiency and provide specific suggestions to mobile computer designers to enable them to develop more energy-efficient systems. We demonstrate that energy-efficient GUI (E/sup 2/GUI) design techniques can improve the average system energy of three benchmarks (text-viewer, personnel viewer, and calculator) by 26.9, 45.2, and 16.4 percent, respectively. Average performance is simultaneously improved by 23.7, 34.6, and 19.3 percent, respectively.  相似文献

The derivation of electromagnetic boundary conditions at an interface by applying Gauss' divergence theorem to a flat pillbox or Stokes' curl theorem to a narrow contour is considered for two types of unusual boundary condition. One is an electric field discontinuity and the other is a double layer of current. Ultrasound imaging allows the evaluation of the degree of emergency of a patient. However, in some instances, a well-trained sonographer is unavailable to perform such echography. To cope with this issue, the Mobile Tele-Echography Using an Ultralight Robot (OTELO) project aims to develop a fully integrated end-to-end mobile tele-echography system using an ultralight remote-controlled robot for population groups that are not served locally by medical experts. This paper focuses on the user interface of the OTELO system, consisting of the following parts: an ultrasound video transmission system providing real-time images of the scanned area, an audio/video conference to communicate with the paramedical assistant and with the patient, and a virtual-reality environment, providing visual and haptic feedback to the expert, while capturing the expert's hand movements. These movements are reproduced by the robot at the patient site while holding the ultrasound probe against the patient skin. In addition, the user interface includes an image processing facility for enhancing the received images and the possibility to include them into a database.  相似文献

This article focuses on recent progress in physical compressive sampling under the Defense Advanced Research Agency's Analog-to-Information (A-to-I) and Multiple Optical Non-Redundant Aperture Generalized Sensors (MONTAGE) programs. A-to-I and MONTAGE focus on aggressive forms of generalized sampling under which measurements consist of transformations, projections, or encodings of the signal onto discrete digital data. The central system design challenge is to select features, sampling strategies and hardware that enable high fidelity signal estimation from these features. The A-to-I and MONTAGE projects differ in application and implementation A-to-I seeks to revolutionize very high temporal bandwidth analog to digital signal conversion whereas MONTAGE seeks to revolutionize very high spatial bandwidth analog to digital signal conversion.  相似文献
