Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio is a fast emerging technology with many unique attractive features that promotes major advances in wireless communications, networking, radar, imaging, and positioning systems. Research in UWB is still in its infancy stages, offering limited resources in handling the challenges facing the UWB communications. Understanding the unique properties and challenges of UWB communications as well as its application in competent signal processing techniques are vital in conquering the obstacles towards developing exciting UWB applications. UWB research and development has to cope with the challenges that limit their performance, capacity, throughput, network flexibility, implementation complexity, and cost. This tutorial focuses on UWB wireless communications at the physical layer. It overviews the state-of-the-art UWB in channel modeling, transmitters, and receivers of UWB radios, and outlines the research directions and challenges that needs to be overcome. Since a signal processing expertise is expected to have major impact in research and development of UWB systems, emphasis is placed on the DSP aspects.  相似文献

Ultra-wideband (UWB) communication is a promising enabling technology for future broadband wireless services. A simple, scalable, distributed, efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol is of critical importance to utilize the large bandwidth UWB channels and enable numerous new applications and services cost-effectively. In this paper, by investigating the characteristics of UWB communications, we propose a Distributed, EXclusive region (DEX) based MAC protocol. The proposed DEX protocol capitalizes on the spatial multiplexing gain of UWB networks by reserving exclusive regions (ER) surrounding the sender and receiver for data and acknowledgment (ACK) transmissions, so that users can efficiently and fairly share network resources in a distributed and asynchronous manner. We further quantify the network performance bounds and derive the optimal ER size to maximize the expected network transport throughput for a dense, multi-hop UWB network. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the DEX protocol. This work explores how to effectively utilize the wireless spatial capacity of distributed, multi-hop wireless networks by optimizing protocol parameters, instead of depending on more complicated control messages.  相似文献

This paper presents the design, testing, and validation of a ultra‐wideband (UWB) wireless solution to replace wired intra‐spacecraft communications with wireless communications. The system requirements are provided in the framework of the Eu:CROPIS mission and the wired intra‐spacecraft communication system is replaced with a two‐segment wireless network. As such, distinct sets of UWB gateways and nodes are prototyped to interface with the on‐board entities and properly handle the data transmission in the resulting spacecraft and payload wireless networks. To accomplish these tasks, a custom radio module integrated into the prototypes was designed to provide the appropriate UWB RF front‐end and run a custom‐built communication stack. The viability of the solution was tested in laboratory conditions. For the test scenarios, sensor data are acquired in the payload network and forwarded as SpaceWire packets over the spacecraft network. Experimental test results indicate the suitability of the proposed solution in terms of delay and data integrity for implementing intra‐spacecraft wireless communications.  相似文献

近年来超宽带(UWB)通信技术迅猛发展,在测量、雷达技术、民用和军事无线通信中有着重要的应用,UWB-over-fiber技术已经成为目前研究的热点,其中就包括UWB脉冲信号的产生方法。区别于传统的电子学方法,光子学产生方法不受电子瓶颈制约,可以实现很高的带宽,并且具有抗电磁干扰、重量轻、结构紧凑的优点。通过对比国内外本领域研究成果,讨论及总结了以下三种原理的UWB脉冲信号的光学生成方法:1)相位调制-强度调制转换(PM-IM);2)半导体光放大器(SOA)的非线性效应;3)频谱塑形和色散所致频域-时域映射,然后对各种方案进行了对比分析。  相似文献

Ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission is an emerging wireless communication technology with unique potential merits such as high-rate, low-transmission power, immunity to multipath propagation, and capability in precise positioning. It has received significant interests for future wireless communications from both academia and industry. In UWB wireless networks, medium access control (MAC) is essential to coordinate the channel access among competing devices. The unique UWB characteristics not only pose significant challenges but also offer great opportunities in efficient UWB MAC design. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of UWB MAC development on four important aspects: multiple access, overhead reduction, resource allocation, and quality of service (QoS) provisioning, and identifies some future research issues.  相似文献

Personal communications services (PCS) promise to provide a variety of information exchanges among users with any type of mobility, at any time, in any place, through any available device. To achieve this ambitious goal, two of the major challenges in the system design are: (i) to provide a high-speed wireless subsystem with large capacity and acceptable quality-of-service (QoS) and (ii) to design a network architecture capable of supporting multimedia traffic and various kinds of user mobility. A time-hopping spread-spectrum wireless communication system called ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) radio is used to provide communications that are low power, high data rate, fade resistant, and relatively shadow free in a dense multipath environment. Receiver-signal processing of UWB radio is described, and performance of such communications systems, in terms of multiple-access capability, is estimated under ideal multiple-access channel conditions. A UWB-signal propagation experiment is performed using the bandwidth in excess of 1 GHz in a typical modern office building in order to characterize the UWB-signal propagation channel. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the UWB radio and its robustness in a dense multipath environment. A ATM network is used as the backbone network due to its high bandwidth, fast switching capability, flexibility, and well-developed infrastructure. To minimize the impact caused by user mobility on the system performance, a hierarchical network-control architecture is postulated. A wireless virtual circuit (WVC) concept is proposed to improve the transmission efficiency and simplify the network control in the wireless subsystem. The key advantage of this network architecture and WVC concept is that the handoff can be done locally most of the time, due to the localized behavior of PCS users  相似文献
