Evaporation heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a horizontal tube are experimentally investigated. The test tube has an inner diameter of 6.0 mm, a wall thickness of 1.0 mm, and a length of 1.4 m. Experiments are conducted at saturation temperatures of 5 and 10 °C, mass fluxes from 170 to 320 kg/m2 s and heat fluxes from 10 to 20 kW/m2. Partial dryout of CO2 occurs at a lower quality as compared to the conventional refrigerants due to a higher bubble growth within the liquid film and a higher liquid droplet entrainment, resulting a rapid decrease of heat transfer coefficients. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and evaporating temperature are explained by introducing unique properties of CO2, flow patterns, and dryout phenomenon. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient of CO2 is on average 47% higher than that of R134a at the same operating conditions. The Gungor and Winterton correlation shows poor prediction of the boiling heat transfer coefficient of CO2 at low mass flux, while it yields good estimation at high mass flux.  相似文献

The dryout for flow boiling carbon dioxide (CO2) in horizontal small diameter tubes is investigated through experiment and theoretical modeling. Tests are conducted in conditions where the saturation temperature is 0, 5, and 10 °C, heat flux is 7.2-48.1 kW/m2 and mass flux is 500-3000 kg/m2 s. The dryout phenomena of CO2 are similar with those of water in many respects, while the effects of mass flux on dryout show differences among them. The dryout of CO2 is predicted by a theoretical dryout model, which is developed and verified with steam-water data. Two entrainment mechanisms of interface deformation and bubble bursting are considered in the model and dryout is determined when the liquid film thickness is less than the critical liquid film thickness, the criteria film thickness of dryout. The present model well predicts the experimental critical qualities except when mass flux is relatively high, at which the deposition of liquid droplet on the liquid film and the occurrence of dryout patches become very significant.  相似文献

Two-phase pressure drops of CO2 are investigated in mini tubes with inner diameters of 2.0 and 0.98 mm and in microchannels with hydraulic diameters from 1.08 to 1.54 mm. For the mini tubes, the tests were conducted with a variation of mass flux from 500 to 3570 kg/m2s, heat flux from 7 to 48 kW/m2, while maintaining saturation temperatures at 0, 5, and 10°C. For the microchannels, mass flux was varied from 100 to 400 kg/m2s and heat flux was altered from 5 to 20 kW/m2. A direct heating method was used to provide heat flux into the refrigerant. The pressure drop of CO2 in the mini tubes shows very similar trends with those in large diameter tubes. Although the microchannel has a small hydraulic diameter, it shows a larger Chisholm parameter in two-phase multiplier. Based on the experimental data in this study, the Chisholm parameter in the Lockhart and Martinelli correlation is modified by considering diameter effects on the two-phase multiplier.  相似文献

A new flow boiling heat transfer model and a new flow pattern map based on the flow boiling heat transfer mechanisms for horizontal tubes have been developed specifically for CO2. Firstly, a nucleate boiling heat transfer correlation incorporating the effects of reduced pressure and heat flux at low vapor qualities has been proposed for CO2. Secondly, a nucleate boiling heat transfer suppression factor correlation incorporating liquid film thickness and tube diameters has been proposed based on the flow boiling heat transfer mechanisms so as to capture the trends in the flow boiling heat transfer data. In addition, a dryout inception correlation has been developed. Accordingly, the heat transfer correlation in the dryout region has been modified. In the new flow pattern map, an intermittent flow to annular flow transition criterion and an annular flow to dryout region transition criterion have been proposed based on the changes in the flow boiling heat transfer trends. The flow boiling heat transfer model predicts 75.5% of all the CO2 database within ±30%. The flow boiling heat transfer model and the flow pattern map are applicable to a wide range of conditions: tube diameters (equivalent diameters for non-circular channels) from 0.8 to 10 mm, mass velocities from 170 to 570 kg/m2 s, heat fluxes from 5 to 32 kW/m2 and saturation temperatures from −28 to 25 °C (reduced pressures from 0.21 to 0.87).  相似文献

In this study, the local characteristics of pressure drop and heat transfer were investigated experimentally for carbon dioxide condensation in a multi-port extruded aluminum test section, which had 10 circular channels each with 1.31 mm inner diameter. The CO2 was cooled with cooling water flow inside the copper blocks that were attached at both sides of the test section. The temperatures at the outer surface of the test section were measured with 24 K-type thermocouples embedded in the upper and lower surfaces along the length. Local heat fluxes were measured with 12 heat flux sensors to estimate the local enthalpies, temperatures and heat transfer coefficients. Bulk mean temperatures of CO2 at the inlet and outlet of the test section were measured with 2 K-type thermocouples. The measurements were performed for the pressure ranged from 6.48 to 7.3 MPa, inlet temperature of CO2 from 21.63 to 31.33℃, heat flux from 1.10 to 8.12 kW/m2, mass velocity from 123.2 to 315.2 kg/m2s, and vapor quality from 0 to 1. The results indicate that pressure drop is very small along the test section, heat transfer coefficient in the two-phase region is higher than that in the single-phase, and mass velocity has important effect on condensation heat transfer characteristics. In addition, experimental data were compared with previous correlations and large discrepancies were observed.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical investigations on forced convection heat transfer of carbon dioxide at supercritical pressures in a prototypic printed circuit heat exchanger under both cooling and heating conditions have been performed in this present study. The experiment test section has nine semi-circular channels with a hydraulic diameter of 1.16 mm and a length of 0.5 m. Primary operational parameters include inlet pressure of 7.5–10 MPa, mass fluxes of 326 kg/m2 s and 762 kg/m2 s, inlet temperatures from 10 °C to 90 °C and the average heat flux was 30 kW/m2. Beyond reproducing the regular experimental cases, numerical modeling also implemented higher heat fluxes of 60 kW/m2 and 90 kW/m2 in order to investigate the effect of heat flux. Good agreement was found between the experiments and FLUENT simulations using an SST kw model with the near-wall region being completely resolved. The distinctive behavior of convection heat transfer at supercritical pressures between heating and cooling modes was systematically analyzed. A more physically reasonable property-averaging technique, Probability Density Function (PDF)-based time-averaged property, was developed to account for the effect of nonlinear dependency of properties on instantaneous local temperature. Furthermore, experimental and computational data were compared to empirical predictions by the Dittus–Boelter and Jackson correlations. The results showed that Dittus–Boelter correlation has better precision for the average value of the predicted heat transfer coefficient but cannot take account of the effect of heat flux. In contrast, the Jackson correlation, with property ratio correction terms to account for the distribution of the properties in the radial direction, could predict the distinction of heat transfer characteristics under heating and cooling conditions. However, it overestimates the average value of heat transfer coefficient in the whole range of the experiment conditions. Finally, a new correlation evaluated by PDF-based time-averaged properties for forced convection heat transfer of CO2 in both heating and cooling mode at supercritical pressures was developed. Comparison of experimental and computational data with the prediction results by the new developed correlation reveals that it works quite well; i.e., more than 90% data in either heating or cooling mode with various heat fluxes are predicted within an accuracy of ±25%.  相似文献

New correlations of the two-phase multiplier and heat transfer coefficient of R134a during evaporation in a multiport minichannel at low mass flux are proposed. The experimental results were obtained from a test using a counter-flow tube-in-tube heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and hot water in the gap between the outer and inner tubes. Test section is composed of the extruded multiport aluminium inner tube with an internal hydraulic diameter of 1.2 mm and an acrylic outer tube with an internal hydraulic diameter of 25.4 mm. The experiments were performed at heat fluxes between 10 and 35 kW/m2, and a refrigerant mass flux between 45 and 155 kg/(m2 s). Some physical parameters that influenced the frictional pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient are examined and discussed in detail. The pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient results are also compared with existing correlations. Finally, new correlations for predicting the frictional pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient at low mass fluxes are proposed.  相似文献

Analysis of various existing correlations including a three-zone evaporation model is made using a comparison with recent experimental results obtained in this study. Flow boiling heat transfer experiments were conducted with two stainless steel tubes of internal diameter 4.26 mm and 2.01 mm. The working fluid was R134a and parameters were varied in the range: mass flux 100–500 kg/m2s; pressure 8–12 bar; quality up to 0.9; heat flux 13–150 kW/m2. The local heat transfer coefficient was independent of vapour quality when this was less than about 40–50% in the 4.26 mm tube and 20–30% in the 2.01 mm tube. Local transient dryout was deduced when the quality was above these values. Furthermore, at high heat flux values the heat transfer coefficient decreased with vapour quality for the entire quality range indicating early occurrence of dryout.Existing correlations, which are based on large tube boiling processes, do not predict the present small diameter data to a satisfactory degree. A better agreement is observed with the recent, state-of-the-art, three-zone evaporation model. However, the model does not predict the effect of diameter and the partial dryout. Nevertheless, the observation suggests that the flow pattern based modelling approach performs at least as well as empirical correlations that are based on macroscale modelling. Aspects of the model that need further consideration are also proposed in this study.  相似文献

The two-phase heat transfer coefficients of pure HFC-134a condensing inside a smooth tube-in-tube heat exchanger are experimentally investigated. The test section is a 0.5 m long double tube with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and cooling water flowing in the annulus. The inner tube is constructed from smooth copper tubing of 9.52 mm outer diameter and 8.1 mm inner diameter. The test runs are performed at average saturation condensing temperatures between 40–50 °C. The mass fluxes are between 260 and 515 kg m− 2s− 1 and the heat fluxes are between 11.3 and 55.3 kW m− 2. The quality of the refrigerant in the test section is calculated using the temperature and pressure obtained from the experiment. The average heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant is determined by applying an energy balance based on the energy transferred from the test section. The effects of heat flux, mass flux and condensation temperature on the heat transfer coefficients are also discussed. Eleven well-known correlations for annular flow are compared to each other using a large amount of data obtained from various experimental conditions. A new correlation for the condensation heat transfer coefficient is proposed for practical applications.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool has been used for investigation of convective heat transfer of CO2 in two porous tubes. Effects of some important parameters such as pressure, inlet temperature, mass flow rate, wall heat flux and porosity on temperature distribution and local heat transfer coefficients have been studied numerically. Near the supercritical conditions, these parameters are very effective on temperature gradient and local heat transfer coefficients. For example at p = 9.5 MPa, under the same conditions, the heat transfer coefficient in a tube with particle diameters of 0.1–0.12 mm is about 20–30% higher than when the particle diameter of 0.2–0.28 mm were used. The heat transfer coefficient increases with decreasing pressure and increasing mass flow rate. Also the porosity of the bed has the important role on the heat transfer. The CFD predictions have been compared to the experimental data and showed pretty good agreement.  相似文献

An innovative cooling system based on evaporative CO2 two-phase flow is under investigation for the tracker detectors upgrade at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). The radiation hardness and the excellent thermodynamic properties emphasize carbon dioxide as a cooling agent in the foreseen minichannels. A circular stainless steel tube in horizontal orientation with an inner diameter of 1.42 mm and a length of 0.3 m has been used as a test section to perform the step-wise scanning of the vapor quality in the entire two-phase region. To characterize the heat transfer and the pressure drop depending on the vapor quality in the tube, measurements have been performed by varying the mass flux from 300 to 600 kg/m2 s, the heat flux from 7.5 to 29.8 kW/m2 and the saturation temperature from ?40 to 0 °C (reduced pressures from 0.136 to 0.472). Heat transfer coefficients between 4 kW/m2 K and 28 kW/m2 K and pressure gradients up to 75 kPa/m were registered. The measured data was analyzed corresponding to the dependencies on heat flux, mass flux and saturation temperature. A database has been established containing about 2000 measurement points. The experimental data was compared with common models recently developed by Cheng et al. [1], [2] to cross check their applicability. The overall trends and experimental data were reproduced as predicted by the models before the dryout onset, and deviations have been analyzed. A modified friction factor for the pressure drop model [1] in mist flow has been proposed based on the experimental data.  相似文献

An experimental study of tube side boiling heat transfer of HFC-134a has been conducted in a single-pass, counter-current flow heat exchanger under an electric field. By applying 0–8 kV to a concentric inner electrode, the mechanics of EHD induced flow and heat transfer augmentation/suppression have been investigated for flow conditions with inlet qualities of 0% to 60%, mass fluxes from 100 kg/m2 s to 500 kg/m2 s, and heat flux levels between 10 kW/m2 and 20 kW/m2. A theoretical Steiner type two-phase flow pattern map for flow boiling in the annular channel under applied DC high voltage is also developed. The flow regimes encountered in the convective boiling process have been reconstructed experimentally and compared with the proposed EHD flow regime map. The results show that when the proposed dimensionless criterion Md Re2 is satisfied, EHD interfacial forces have a strong influence on the flow pattern which is considered to be the primary mechanism affecting the increase in pressure drop and the augmentation or even suppression of heat transfer.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effect of surface wettability on the pool boiling heat transfer, nucleate pool boiling experiments were conducted with deionized water and silica based nanofluid. A higher surface roughness value in the range of 3.9 ~ 6.0μm was tested. The contact angle was from 4.7° to 153°, and heat flux was from 30kW/m2 to 300kW/m2. Experimental results showed that hydrophilicity diminish the boiling heat transfer of silica nanofluid on the surfaces with higher roughness. As the increment of nanofluid mass concentration from 0.025% to 0.1%, a further reduction of heat transfer coefficient was observed. For the super hydrophobic surface with higher roughness (contact angle 153.0°), boiling heat transfer was enhanced at heat flux less than 93 kW/m2, and then the heat transfer degraded at higher heat flux.  相似文献

A detailed comparison of flow boiling heat transfer results in a stainless steel tube of 1.1 mm internal diameter with results of a three-zone flow model are presented in this paper. The working fluid is R134a. Other parameters were varied in the range: mass flux 100–600 kg/m2 s; heat flux 16–150 kW/m2 and pressure 6–12 bar.The experimental results demonstrate that the heat transfer coefficient increases with heat flux and system pressure, but does not change with vapour quality when the quality is less than about 50% for low heat and mass flux values. The effect of mass flux is observed to be insignificant. For vapour quality values greater than 50% and at high heat flux values, the heat transfer coefficient does not depend on heat flux and decreases with vapour quality. This could be caused by dryout. The three-zone evaporation model predicts the experimental results fairly well, especially at relatively low pressure. However, the dryout region observed at high quality is highly over-predicted by the model. The sensitivity of the performance of the model to the three optimised parameters (confined bubble frequency, initial film thickness and end film thickness) and some preliminary investigation relating the critical film thickness for dryout to measured tube roughness are also discussed.  相似文献

Corresponding to the updated flow pattern map presented in Part I of this study, an updated general flow pattern based flow boiling heat transfer model was developed for CO2 using the Cheng–Ribatski–Wojtan–Thome [L. Cheng, G. Ribatski, L. Wojtan, J.R. Thome, New flow boiling heat transfer model and flow pattern map for carbon dioxide evaporating inside horizontal tubes, Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer 49 (2006) 4082–4094; L. Cheng, G. Ribatski, L. Wojtan, J.R. Thome, Erratum to: “New flow boiling heat transfer model and flow pattern map for carbon dioxide evaporating inside tubes” [Heat Mass Transfer 49 (21–22) (2006) 4082–4094], Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer 50 (2007) 391] flow boiling heat transfer model as the starting basis. The flow boiling heat transfer correlation in the dryout region was updated. In addition, a new mist flow heat transfer correlation for CO2 was developed based on the CO2 data and a heat transfer method for bubbly flow was proposed for completeness sake. The updated general flow boiling heat transfer model for CO2 covers all flow regimes and is applicable to a wider range of conditions for horizontal tubes: tube diameters from 0.6 to 10 mm, mass velocities from 50 to 1500 kg/m2 s, heat fluxes from 1.8 to 46 kW/m2 and saturation temperatures from ?28 to 25 °C (reduced pressures from 0.21 to 0.87). The updated general flow boiling heat transfer model was compared to a new experimental database which contains 1124 data points (790 more than that in the previous model [Cheng et al., 2006, 2007]) in this study. Good agreement between the predicted and experimental data was found in general with 71.4% of the entire database and 83.2% of the database without the dryout and mist flow data predicted within ±30%. However, the predictions for the dryout and mist flow regions were less satisfactory due to the limited number of data points, the higher inaccuracy in such data, scatter in some data sets ranging up to 40%, significant discrepancies from one experimental study to another and the difficulties associated with predicting the inception and completion of dryout around the perimeter of the horizontal tubes.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 /R-744) is receiving renewed interest as a refrigerant, in many cases for systems with microchannel heat exchangers that have high pressure capability, efficient heat transfer, and compact design. A good understanding of two-phase flow of evaporating CO 2 in microchannels is needed to analyze and predict heat transfer. A special test rig was built in order to observe two-phase flow patterns using a horizontal glass tube with ID 0.98 mm. Flow visualization experiments were conducted for temperatures 20°C and 0°C and for mass flux ranging from 100 to 580 kg m?2 s?1 . The observations showed a dominance of intermittent (slug) flow at low x and wavy annular flow with entrainment of droplets at higher x. The aggravated dryout problem reported from heat transfer experiments at high mass flux could be explained by increased entrainment. The flow pattern observations did not fit generalized maps or transition lines showed in the literature.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide is gaining renewed interest as an environmentally safe refrigerant. In order to improve the energy efficiency of R744 systems, an accurate knowledge of heat transfer coefficients is fundamental. In this paper experimental heat transfer coefficients during flow boiling of R744 in a smooth, horizontal, circular, 6.00 mm inner diameter tube are presented. We obtained 217 experimental points in 18 operating conditions commonly encountered in dry-expansion evaporators investigating the effect of the mass flux within the range from 200 to 349 kg/m2 s, the saturation temperature within the range from ?7.8 to 5.8 °C, the heat flux within the range from 10.0 to 20.6 kW/m2 and the vapor quality within the range from 0.02 to 0.98.An interpretation of the experimental trends based on the local circumferential distribution of heat transfer coefficients, the flow regimes and the thermophysical properties is proposed.Besides the measured data are compared with those predicted by the Cheng et al. [L. Cheng, G. Ribatski, J.R. Grooved surfaces are widely used to enhance heat transfer. In this study, micro-grooves are applied to miniature channels to improve the evaporative heat transfer of CO2. To evaluate the effect of micro-grooves in miniature channels, heat transfer characteristics are investigated for the smooth multichannel tube with 0.8 mm channel diameter and the grooved multi-channel tube with the same diameter and 8 micro-grooves. The tests were carried out at the evaporation temperatures of 0, 5 and 10°C; mass flux between 400 and 800 kg/m2s; and heat flux of 12–18 kW/m2. At lower qualities (less than about 0.3), heat transfer was considerably enhanced by the grooves, however, the micro-grooves showed negative effect in heat transfer at higher qualities. A significant heat transfer enhancement was obtained at high evaporating temperature. Also, heat transfer was enhanced at lower heat and mass flux. The evaporative heat transfer coefficients measured were compared with several correlations. A new correlation was developed to predict the dry-out quality in miniature channel tubes more accurately.  相似文献

This study investigated the direct relationship between the measured condensation pressure drop and convective heat transfer coefficient of R134a flowing downward inside a vertical smooth copper tube having an inner diameter of 8.1 mm and a length of 500 mm during annular flow. R134a and water were used as working fluids on the tube side and annular side of a double tube heat exchanger, respectively. Condensation experiments were performed at mass fluxes of 260, 300, 340, 400, 456 and 515 kg m−2 s−1 in the high mass flux region of R134a. The condensing temperatures were around 40 and 50 °C; the heat fluxes were between 10.16 and 66.61 kW m−2. Paliwoda’s analysis, which focused mainly on the determination of the two-phase flow factor and two-phase length of evaporators and condensers, was adapted to the in-tube condensation phenomena in the test section to determine the condensation heat transfer coefficient, heat flux, two-phase length and pressure drop experimentally by means of a large number of data points obtained under various experimental conditions.  相似文献
