The excellent mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make them the ideal reinforcements for high performance composites. The misalignment and waviness of CNTs within composites are two major issues that limit the reinforcing efficiency. We report an effective method to increase the strength and stiffness of high volume fraction, aligned CNT composites by reducing CNT waviness using a drawing and stretching approach. Stretching the composites after fabrication improved the ultimate strength by 50%, 150%, and 190% corresponding to stretch ratios of 2%, 4% and 7%, respectively. Improvement of the electrical conductivities exhibited a similar trend. These results demonstrate the importance of straightening and aligning CNTs in improving the composite strength and electrical conductivity.  相似文献

The effective properties and local aggregation effect of CNT/SMP composites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A micromechanics model of the thermomechanical constitutive behavior and micro-structural inhomogeneity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/shape memory polymer (SMP) composites is presented. It is assumed that the CNTs are elastic and the SMP obeys a thermomechanical constitutive law. The effective properties of CNT/SMP composites are examined using a micro-mechanics method. The effect of CNT aggregation in the composite, frequently encountered in real engineering situations, is studied. The degree of aggregation is described by an aggregation coefficient, and the effective properties of SMP composites with aggregated CNTs are calculated using a stepping scheme. It is shown that the degree of CNT aggregation dramatically influences the effective properties of the CNT/SMP composites. A homogeneous microstructure leads to maximum levels of effective composite properties.  相似文献

In this study carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on carbon fibers to enhance the in-plane and out-of-plane properties of fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs). A relatively low temperature synthesis technique was utilized to directly grow CNTs over the carbon fibers. Several composites based on carbon fibers with different surface treatments (e.g. growing CNTs with different lengths and distribution patterns and coating the fibers with a thermal barrier coating (TBC) layer) were fabricated and characterized via on- and off-axis tensile tests. The on-axis tensile strength and ductility of the hybrid FRPs were improved by 11% and 35%, respectively, due to the presence of the TBC and the surface grown CNTs. This configuration also exhibited 16% improvement on the off-axis stiffness. Results suggest that certain CNT growth patterns and lengths are more pertinent than the other surface treatments to achieve superior mechanical properties.  相似文献

High quality multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grown at high density using a low temperature growth method are used as an alternative material to polymer sizing and is utilised in a series of epoxy composites reinforced with carbon fibres to provide improved physical and electrical properties. We report improvements for sizing-sensitive mechanical and physical properties, such as the interfacial adhesion, shear properties and handling of the fibres, whilst retaining resin-infusion capability. Following fibre volume fraction normalisation, the carbon nanotube-modified carbon fibre composite offers improvements of 146% increase in Young’s modulus; 20% increase in ultimate shear stress; 74% increase in shear chord modulus and an 83% improvement in the initial fracture toughness. The addition of CNTs imparts electrical functionalisation to the composite, enhancements in the surface direction are 400%, demonstrating a suitable route to sizing-free composites with enhanced mechanical and electrical functionality.  相似文献

The interest in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcements for aluminium (Al) has been growing considerably. Efforts have been largely focused on investigating their contribution to the enhancement of the mechanical performance of the composites. The uniform dispersion of CNTs in the Al matrix has been identified as being critical to the pursuit of enhanced properties. Ball milling as a mechanical dispersion technique has proved its potential. In this work, we use ball milling to disperse up to 5 wt.% CNT in an Al matrix. The effect of CNT content on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Cold compaction and hot extrusion were used to consolidate the ball-milled Al–CNT mixtures. Enhancements of up to 50% in tensile strength and 23% in stiffness compared to pure aluminium were observed. Some carbide formation was observed in the composite containing 5 wt.% CNT. In spite of the observed overall reinforcing effect, the large aspect ratio CNTs used in the present study were difficult to disperse at CNT wt.% greater than 2, and thus the expected improvements in mechanical properties with increase in CNT weight content were not fully realized.  相似文献

Vibration damping characteristic of nanocomposites and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs) containing multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been studied using the free and forced vibration tests. Several vibration parameters are varied to characterize the damping behavior in different amplitudes, natural frequencies and vibration modes. The damping ratio of the hybrid composites is enhanced with the addition of CNTs, which is attributed to sliding at the CNT-matrix interfaces. The damping ratio is dependent on the amplitude as a result of the random orientation of CNTs in the epoxy matrix. The natural frequency shows negligible influence on the damping properties. The forced vibration test indicates that the damping ratios of the CFRP composites increase with increasing CNT content in both the 1st and 2nd vibration modes. The CNT-epoxy nanocomposites also show similar increasing trends of damping ratio with CNT content, indicating the enhanced damping property of CFRPs arising mainly from the improved damping property of the modified matrix. The dynamic mechanical analysis further confirms that the CNTs have a strong influence on the composites damping properties. Both the dynamic loss modulus and loss factor of the nanocomposites and the corresponding CFRPs show consistent increases with the addition of CNTs, an indication of enhanced damping performance.  相似文献

Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer (HAS) molecules have been covalently linked on the outer surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the so-obtained multi-functional fillers (HAS-f-CNTs) have been compounded with Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) to get composite films. The success of the grafting reaction of the HAS molecules has been confirmed through spectroscopic and thermo-gravimetric analyses. Morphological analyses reveal a segregated microstructure, in which CNT-rich channels surround the polymer domains. This morphology results in improved mechanical properties and appreciable electrical conductive features. More importantly, the addition of only 1 wt.% of HAS-f-CNTs brings about a significant improvement of the photo-oxidation resistance, which neither HAS nor CNTs can provide if used separately. The origin of this synergic effect is discussed. Overall, our results demonstrate the possibility of using properly functionalized CNTs as multi-functional fillers to get high-performance polymer composites.  相似文献

The versatile electrospinning technique was used to successfully align and disperse multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in nylon 6,6 matrix to obtain composite fibers. The morphology of the composite fibers and the dispersion of the CNTs within the fibers were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. TEM analysis revealed that the CNTs were well-dispersed, separated and aligned along the fiber axis. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composite fibers were characterized as a function of weight fraction of the CNTs. Incorporation of the CNTs in the fibers resulted in an increase in glass-transition temperature (Tg) by ∼7 °C, indicating that the addition of CNTs has restricted the mobility of the polymer chains and provided confinement to neighboring molecular chains. Tensile and nanoindentation experiments were performed to investigate the mechanical deformation behavior of the composite fibers. The results suggested that incorporation of high strength and high aspect ratio CNTs into the fiber matrix enhanced significantly the stiffness and strength of nylon 6,6 fibers. An understanding of the structure–property relationships can provide fruitful insights to develop electrospun fibers with superior properties for miniaturized and load-bearing applications.  相似文献

Mechanical and weight properties of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) are measured and modeled at the interlaminar region, predicting the density and elastic modulus of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A simple model of the CNTs density and elastic modulus within the PNC, accounting for fundamental material properties, geometry, and interactions, is developed, capable of predicting CNT contributions in the PNCs. Furthermore, the model is validated with experimental results that demonstrate enhancement of the elastic modulus, while reducing density in the presence of aligned CNTs. By establishing an inverse relation of density and elastic modulus (negative correlation), it is demonstrated the potential of increasing mechanical properties while reducing weight. Therefore, by introducing controlled nanoporosity through suitable CNT distributions within the interlayer of multi-lamina structures, it is possible to simultaneously control effective weight reduction and enhanced modulus, toward bio-inspired carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown from the surface of glass fibers by chemical vapor deposition, and these hybrid fibers were individually dispersed in an epoxy matrix to investigate the local composite structure and properties near the fiber surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the influence of infiltration and curing of a liquid epoxy precursor on the morphology of the CNT “forest” region, or region of high CNT density near the fiber surface. Subsequent image analysis highlighted the importance of spatially dependent volume fractions of CNTs in the matrix as a function of distance from the fiber surface, and nanoindentation was used to probe local mechanical properties in the CNT forest region, showing strong correlations between local stiffness and volume fraction. This work represents the first in situ measurements of local mechanical properties of the nano-structured matrix region in hybrid fiber-reinforced composites, providing a means of quantifying the reinforcement provided by the grafted nanofillers.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grafted on fibres are widely used to reinforce composites in order to improve their mechanical properties. This study concerned the tribological properties of CNTs grafted on carbon fibres by the flame method. The aim of this study was to determine whether CNTs on fibres suffer damage under stress, similar to those applied during composite manufacturing, which can damage composite properties, particularly fibre/matrix adhesion. For this purpose, reciprocating friction tests were performed to examine the resistance of CNTs and highlight a wear mechanism. The results showed that the presence of CNTs increased the coefficient of friction in the first friction cycles and then decreased it to close to the COF of the fibre without CNTs. The wear mechanism showed that after a small number of friction cycles, the CNTs were flattened out and formed a transfer film.  相似文献

Because of their high mechanical strength, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being considered as nanoscale fibres to enhance the performance of polymer composite materials. Novel CNT-based composites have been fabricated using different methods, expecting that the resulting composites would possess enhanced or completely new set of physical properties due to the addition of CNTs. However, the physics of interactions between CNT and its surrounding matrix material in such nano-composites has yet to be elucidated and methods for determining the parameters controlling interfacial characteristics such as interfacial shear stress, is still challenging. An improvement of the physical properties of polymer nanocomposites, based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), is addicted to a good dispersion and strong interactions between the matrix and the filler.  相似文献

Composites have set the standard for high strength materials for several decades. With the discovery of nanotubes, new possibilities for reinforced composites have arisen, with potential mechanical properties superior to those of currently available materials. This paper reports the properties of epoxy matrix reinforced with fibres of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which, in many ways, are similar to standard composites reinforced with commercial fibres. The composites were formed by the back diffusion of the uncured epoxy into an array of aligned fibres of CNTs. The fibre density and volume fraction were measured from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Properties in tension and compression were measured, and the level of fibre–matrix interaction analysed fractographically. The results show the significant potential for this route to CNT reinforcement.  相似文献

Polymer composites with high permittivity and low dielectric loss are highly desirable in electronic and electrical industry. Adding conductive fillers could significantly increase the permittivity of a polymer. However, polymer composites containing conductive fillers often exhibit very high dielectric loss due to their large electrical conduction or leakage currents. In this work, by engineering TiO2-nanorod-decorated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (TD-CNTs), polystyrene (PS) composite with high permittivity and low dielectric loss have been successfully prepared. The composite containing of 17.2 vol.% TD-CNTs has a permittivity of 37 at 1 kHz, which is 13.7 times higher than that of the pure PS (2.7), while the dielectric loss still remains at a low value below 0.11. The dielectric properties of the composites are closely related to the length of CNTs and the loading level of TiO2-nanorods on the CNT surfaces.  相似文献

We report enhanced thermal and mechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites achieved through the use of functionalized CNTs-reactive polymer linkages and three-roll milling. CNTs were functionalized with carboxyl groups and dispersed in a polymer containing an epoxide group resulting in a chemical reaction. To maximize CNT dispersion for practical usage, entangled CNTs are separated and then evenly dispersed within the polymer matrix using three horizontally positioned rotating rolls that apply a strong shear force to the composite. Consequently, accompanying with thermal stability, elastic modulus and storage modulus of such functionalized CNT/polymer composites were increased by 100% and 500% that of the untreated epoxy polymer.  相似文献

Study was made of the effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polymeric compatibilizer on thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The composites were prepared by melt mixing in two steps. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were melt mixed with maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) as polymeric compatibilizer to produce a PEgMA-CNT masterbatch containing 20 wt% of CNTs. The masterbatch was then added to HDPE to prepare HDPE nanocomposites with CNT content of 2 or 6 wt%. The unmodified and modified (hydroxyl or amine groups) CNTs had similar effects on the properties of HDPE-PEgMA indicating that only non-covalent interactions were achieved between CNTs and matrix. According to SEM studies, single nanotubes and CNT agglomerates (size up to 1 μm) were present in all nanocomposites regardless of content or modification of CNTs. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA increased decomposition temperature, but only slight changes were observed in crystallization temperature, crystallinity, melting temperature, and coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE). Young’s modulus and tensile strength of matrix clearly increased, while elongation at break decreased. Measured values of Young’s moduli of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites were between the values of Young’s moduli for longitudinal (E11) and transverse (E22) direction predicted by Mori-Tanaka and Halpin-Tsai composite theories. Addition of CNTs to HDPE-PEgMA did not change the tribological properties of the matrix. Because of its higher crystallinity, PEgMA possessed significantly different properties from HDPE matrix: better mechanical properties, lower friction and wear, and lower CLTE in normal direction. Interestingly, the mechanical and tribological properties and CLTEs of HDPE-PEgMA-CNT composites lie between those of PEgMA and HDPE.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the prime choice nano-filler reinforcement for fibrous polymeric composites. But the stability of the CNT/polymer interface is yet to be ensured for elevated temperature engineering applications. Present study deals with the assessment of elevated temperature durability of glass fiber/epoxy (GE) composite with various level of multi walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) loading. Flexural testing at room temperature revealed that addition of 0.1% MWCNT yielded maximum strength (+32.8% over control GE) and modulus (+11.5% over control GE) amongst all the CNT modified composite systems. Further, MWCNT–GE composites resulted in accelerated degradation of mechanical performance with increasing temperature as compared to GE composite. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) was carried out to study the viscoelastic behavior of all composites over a range of temperature. The design parameters were evaluated by Weibull probability function. Fractographic analysis figured out various failure modes in all composites at various temperatures.  相似文献

Alignment of pristine carbon nanotubes (P-CNTs) and fluorinated carbon nanotubes (F-CNTs) in nylon-6 polymer composite fibers (PCFs) has been achieved using a single-screw extrusion method. CNTs have been used as filler reinforcements to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of nylon-6 composite fibers. The composites were fabricated by dry mixing nylon-6 polymer powder with the CNTs as the first step, then followed by the melt extrusion process of fiber materials in a single-screw extruder. The extruded fibers were stretched to their maxima and stabilized using a godet set-up. Finally, fibers were wound on a Wayne filament winder machine and tested for their tensile and thermal properties. The tests have shown a remarkable change in mechanical and thermal properties of nylon-6 polymer fibers with the addition of 0.5?wt% F-CNTs and 1.0?wt% of P-CNTs. To draw a comparison between the improvements achieved, the same process has been repeated with neat nylon-6 polymer. As a result, tensile strength has been increased by 230% for PCFs made with 0.5% F-CNTs and 1% P-CNTs as additives. These fibers have been further characterized by DSC, Raman spectroscopy and SEM which confirm the alignment of CNTs and interfacial bonding to nylon-6 polymer matrix.  相似文献
