A tree t-spanner T in a graph G is a spanning tree of G such that the distance between every pair of vertices in T is at most t times their distance in G. The tree t-spanner problem asks whether a graph admits a tree t-spanner, given t. We first substantially strengthen the known results for bipartite graphs. We prove that the tree t-spanner problem is NP-complete even for chordal bipartite graphs for t ≥ 5, and every bipartite ATE-free graph has a tree 3-spanner, which can be found in linear time. The previous best known results were NP-completeness for general bipartite graphs, and that every convex graph has a tree 3-spanner. We next focus on the tree t-spanner problem for probe interval graphs and related graph classes. The graph classes were introduced to deal with the physical mapping of DNA. From a graph theoretical point of view, the classes are natural generalizations of interval graphs. We show that these classes are tree 7-spanner admissible, and a tree 7-spanner can be constructed in (m log n) time.  相似文献

Let (V,δ) be a finite metric space, where V is a set of n points and δ is a distance function defined for these points. Assume that (V,δ) has a doubling dimension d and assume that each point pV has a disk of radius r(p) around it. The disk graph that corresponds to V and r(?) is a directed graph I(V,E,r), whose vertices are the points of V and whose edge set includes a directed edge from p to q if δ(p,q)≤r(p). In Peleg and Roditty (Proc. 7th Int. Conf. on Ad-Hoc Networks and Wireless (AdHoc-NOW), pp. 622–633, 2008) we presented an algorithm for constructing a (1+?)-spanner of size O(n? ?d logM), where M is the maximal radius r(p). The current paper presents two results. The first shows that the spanner of Peleg and Roditty (in Proc. 7th Int. Conf. on Ad-Hoc Networks and Wireless (AdHoc-NOW), pp. 622–633, 2008) is essentially optimal, i.e., for metrics of constant doubling dimension it is not possible to guarantee a spanner whose size is independent of M. The second result shows that by slightly relaxing the requirements and allowing a small augmentation of the radius assignment, considerably better spanners can be constructed. In particular, we show that if it is allowed to use edges of the disk graph I(V,E,r 1+? ), where r 1+? (p)=(1+?)?r(p) for every pV, then it is possible to get a (1+?)-spanner of size O(n/? d ) for I(V,E,r). Our algorithm is simple and can be implemented efficiently.  相似文献

A tree t-spanner T of a graph G is a spanning tree of G whose max-stretch is t, i.e., the distance between any two vertices in T is at most t times their distance in G. If G has a tree t-spanner but not a tree (t−1)-spanner, then G is said to have max-stretch of t. In this paper, we study the Max-Stretch Reduction Problem: for an unweighted graph G=(V,E), find a set of edges not in E originally whose insertion into G can decrease the max-stretch of G. Our results are as follows: (i) For a ring graph, we give a linear-time algorithm which inserts k edges improving the max-stretch optimally. (ii) For a grid graph, we give a nearly optimal max-stretch reduction algorithm which preserves the structure of the grid. (iii) In the general case, we show that it is -hard to decide, for a given graph G and its spanning tree of max-stretch t, whether or not one-edge insertion can decrease the max-stretch to t−1. (iv) Finally, we show that the max-stretch of an arbitrary graph on n vertices can be reduced to s′≥2 by inserting O(n/s′) edges, which can be determined in linear time, and observe that this number of edges is optimal up to a constant.

Constructing Plane Spanners of Bounded Degree and Low Weight   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Given a set S of n points in the plane, we give an O(n log n)-time algorithm that constructs a plane t-spanner for S, with t ≈ 10, such that the degree of each point of S is bounded from above by 27, and the total edge length is proportional to the weight of a minimum spanning tree of S. Previously, no algorithms were known for constructing plane t-spanners of bounded degree.  相似文献

We further develop the study of testing graph properties as initiated by Goldreich, Goldwasser and Ron. Loosely speaking, given an oracle access to a graph, we wish to distinguish the case when the graph has a pre-determined property from the case when it is ``far'' from having this property. Whereas they view graphs as represented by their adjacency matrix and measure the distance between graphs as a fraction of all possible vertex pairs, we view graphs as represented by bounded-length incidence lists and measure the distance between graphs as a fraction of the maximum possible number of edges. Thus, while the previous model is most appropriate for the study of dense graphs, our model is most appropriate for the study of bounded-degree graphs. In particular, we present randomized algorithms for testing whether an unknown bounded-degree graph is connected, k -connected (for k>1 ), cycle-free and Eulerian. Our algorithms work in time polynomial in 1/? , always accept the graph when it has the tested property, and reject with high probability if the graph is ? -far from having the property. For example, the 2-connectivity algorithm rejects (with high probability) any N -vertex d -degree graph for which more than ? dN edges need to be added in order to make the graph 2-edge-connected. In addition we prove lower bounds of Ω(\sqrt N ) on the query complexity of testing algorithms for the bipartite and expander properties.  相似文献

Abstract. We further develop the study of testing graph properties as initiated by Goldreich, Goldwasser and Ron. Loosely speaking, given an oracle access to a graph, we wish to distinguish the case when the graph has a pre-determined property from the case when it is ``far' from having this property. Our algorithms work in time polynomial in 1/ɛ , always accept the graph when it has the tested property, and reject with high probability if the graph is ɛ -far from having the property. For example, the 2-connectivity algorithm rejects (with high probability) any N -vertex d -degree graph for which more than ɛ dN edges need to be added in order to make the graph 2-edge-connected. In addition we prove lower bounds of Ω(\sqrt N ) on the query complexity of testing algorithms for the bipartite and expander properties.  相似文献

We consider the Chromatic Sum Problem on bipartite graphs which appears to be much harder than the classical Chromatic Number Problem. We prove that the Chromatic Sum Problem is NP-complete on planar bipartite graphs with $\Delta \leq 5$, but polynomial on bipartite graphs with $\Delta \leq 3$, for which we construct an $O(n^{2})$-time algorithm. Hence, we tighten the borderline of intractability for this problem on bipartite graphs with bounded degree, namely: the case $\Delta =3$ is easy, $% \Delta =5$ is hard. Moreover, we construct a $27/26$-approximation algorithm for this problem thus improving the best known approximation ratio of $10/9$.  相似文献

δ-Hyperbolic metric spaces have been defined by M. Gromov in 1987 via a simple 4-point condition: for any four points u,v,w,x, the two larger of the distance sums d(u,v)+d(w,x),d(u,w)+d(v,x),d(u,x)+d(v,w) differ by at most?2δ. They play an important role in geometric group theory, geometry of negatively curved spaces, and have recently become of interest in several domains of computer science, including algorithms and networking. In this paper, we study unweighted δ-hyperbolic graphs. Using the Layering Partition technique, we show that every n-vertex δ-hyperbolic graph with δ≥1/2 has an additive O(δlog?n)-spanner with at most O(δn) edges and provide a simpler, in our opinion, and faster construction of distance approximating trees of δ-hyperbolic graphs with an additive error O(δlog?n). The construction of our tree takes only linear time in the size of the input graph. As a consequence, we show that the family of n-vertex δ-hyperbolic graphs with δ≥1/2 admits a routing labeling scheme with O(δlog?2 n) bit labels, O(δlog?n) additive stretch and O(log?2(4δ)) time routing protocol, and a distance labeling scheme with O(log?2 n) bit labels, O(δlog?n) additive error and constant time distance decoder.  相似文献

In this paper we study the GRAPH ISOMORPHISM problem on graphs of bounded treewidth, bounded degree, or bounded bandwidth. GRAPH ISOMORPHISM can be solved in polynomial time for graphs of bounded treewidth, pathwidth, or bandwidth, but the exponent depends on the treewidth, pathwidth, or bandwidth. Thus, we look for special cases where ``fixed parameter tractable' polynomial time algorithms can be established. We introduce some new and natural graph parameters: the (rooted) path distance width, which is a restriction of bandwidth, and the (rooted) tree distance width, which is a restriction of treewidth. We give algorithms that solve GRAPH ISOMORPHISM in O(n 2 ) time for graphs with bounded rooted path distance width, and in O(n 3 ) time for graphs with bounded rooted tree distance width. Additionally, we show that computing the path distance width of a graph is NP-hard, but both path and tree distance width can be computed in O(n k+1 ) time, when they are bounded by a constant k; the rooted path or tree distance width can be computed in O(ne) time. Finally, we study the relationships between the newly introduced parameters and other existing graph parameters. Received February 18, 1997; revised February 23, 1998.  相似文献

We consider the Partition Into Triangles problem on bounded degree graphs. We show that this problem is polynomial-time solvable on graphs of maximum degree three by giving a linear-time algorithm. We also show that this problem becomes $\mathcal{NP}$ -complete on graphs of maximum degree four. Moreover, we show that there is no subexponential-time algorithm for this problem on graphs of maximum degree four unless the Exponential-Time Hypothesis fails. However, the Partition Into Triangles problem on graphs of maximum degree at most four is in many cases practically solvable as we give an algorithm for this problem that runs in $\mathcal{O}(1.02220^{n})$ time and linear space.  相似文献

The formalism of monadic second-order (MS) logic has been very successful in unifying a large number of algorithms for graphs of bounded treewidth. We extend the elegant framework of MS logic from static problems to dynamic problems, in which queries about MS properties of a graph of bounded treewidth are interspersed with updates of vertex and edge labels. This allows us to unify and occasionally strengthen a number of scattered previous results obtained in an ad hoc manner and to enable solutions to a wide range of additional problems to be derived automatically. As an auxiliary result of independent interest, we dynamize a data structure of Chazelle for answering queries about products of labels along paths in a tree with edges labeled by elements of a semigroup.  相似文献

Given a graph G we consider the problem of preprocessing it so that given two vertices x,y and a set X of vertices, we can efficiently report the shortest path (or just its length) between x,y that avoids X. We attach labels to vertices in such a way that this length can be determined from the labels of x,y and the vertices X. For a graph with n vertices of tree-width or clique-width k, we construct labels of size O(k 2log 2 n). The constructions extend to directed graphs. The problem is motivated by routing in networks in case of failures or of routing policies which forbid certain paths.  相似文献

We show that the following fundamental edge-colouring problem can be solved in polynomial time for any given constant B: given a simple graph G, find an edge-colouring of G where each colour is assigned to at most B edges and which, subject to this condition, has the fewest number of colour classes.  相似文献

We study ways to expedite Yates’s algorithm for computing the zeta and Moebius transforms of a function defined on the subset lattice. We develop a trimmed variant of Moebius inversion that proceeds point by point, finishing the calculation at a subset before considering its supersets. For an n-element universe U and a family ? of its subsets, trimmed Moebius inversion allows us to compute the number of packings, coverings, and partitions of U with k sets from ? in time within a polynomial factor (in n) of the number of supersets of the members of ?. Relying on an projection theorem of Chung et al. (J. Comb. Theory Ser. A 43:23–37, 1986) to bound the sizes of set families, we apply these ideas to well-studied combinatorial optimisation problems on graphs with maximum degree Δ. In particular, we show how to compute the domatic number in time within a polynomial factor of (2Δ+1?2) n/(Δ+1) and the chromatic number in time within a polynomial factor of (2Δ+1?Δ?1) n/(Δ+1). For any constant Δ, these bounds are O((2?ε) n ) for ε>0 independent of the number of vertices n.  相似文献

A t-spanner of a graph G is a spanning subgraph S in which the distance between every pair of vertices is at most t times their distance in G. If S is required to be a tree then S is called a tree t-spanner of G. In 1998, Fekete and Kremer showed that on unweighted planar graphs deciding whether G admits a tree t-spanner is polynomial time solvable for t?3 and is NP-complete when t is part of the input. They also left as an open problem if the problem is polynomial time solvable for every fixed t?4. In this work we resolve the open question of Fekete and Kremer by proving much more general results:
  • •
The problem of finding a t-spanner of treewidth at most k in a given planar graph G is fixed parameter tractable parameterized by k and t. Moreover, for every fixed t and k, the running time of our algorithm is linear.
  • •
Our technique allows to extend the result from planar graphs to much more general classes of graphs. An apex graph is a graph that can be made planar by the removal of a single vertex. We prove that the problem of finding a t-spanner of treewidth k is fixed parameter tractable on graphs that do not contain some fixed apex graph as a minor, i.e. on apex-minor-free graphs. The class of apex-minor-free graphs contains planar graphs and graphs of bounded genus.
  • •
Finally, we show that the tractability border of the t-spanner problem cannot be extended beyond the class of apex-minor-free graphs and in this sense our results are tight. In particular, for every t?4, the problem of finding a tree t-spanner is NP-complete on K6-minor-free graphs.
