Existing data suggest that iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a risk factor for poor educational performance in schoolchildren. The synergistic effect of IDA in combination with other forms of malnutrition and other risk factors may affect educational performance more strongly. Thus, IDA and its effect on educational performance should be studied in the context of other risk factors.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the effects of iron deficiency on the absorption of pollutant metals, an iron-deficient diet was fed to young rats until their tissue-iron stores were depleted. Prior to the development of anemia, the iron-deficient rats and littermate controls were administered an intragastric gavage of lead-210 or cadmium-109 and were killed 48 hr later. The body burden of lead was approximately 6 times greater, and that of cadmium approximately 7 times greater, in iron-deficient rats than in the controls. No consistent effects were observed on concentrations of serum total lipids or serum proteins nor on protein electrophoretic patterns in rats with a deficit in iron stores.  相似文献

The discovery of iron regulatory proteins (IRPs) has provided a molecular framework from which to more fully understand the coordinate regulation of vertebrate iron metabolism. IRPs bind to iron responsive elements (IREs) in specific mRNAs and regulate their utilization. The targets of IRP action now appear to extend beyond proteins that function in the storage (ferritin) or cellular uptake (transferrin receptor) of iron to include those involved in other aspects of iron metabolism as well as in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. To date, it appears that IRPs modulate the utilization of six mammalian mRNAs. Current studies are aimed at defining the mechanisms responsible for the hierarchical regulation of these mRNAs by IRPs. In addition, much interest continues to focus on the signaling pathways through which IRP function is regulated. Multiple factors modulate the RNA binding activity of IRP1 and/or IRP2 including iron, nitric oxide, phosphorylation by protein kinase C, oxidative stress and hypoxia/reoxygenation. Because IRPs are key modulators of the uptake and metabolic fate of iron in cells, they are focal points for the modulation of cellular iron homeostasis in response to a variety of agents and circumstances.  相似文献

The physical signs of tissue iron deficiency include smooth and red tongue, angular stomatitis, koilonychia, and pica. The incidence of these conditions is unknown in Japan. We evaluated the frequency and development of tissue iron deficiency in 353 patients with iron deficiency anemia. The frequency of tissue iron deficiency was 6.8%; papillary atrophy of the tongue, 5.4%; abnormal nails, 5.4%; angular stomatitis, 1.1%; Plummer-Vinson syndrome, 1.7%; and pica, 0.06%. These findings were compared with the date collected by Wintrobe and Beveridge. The development and incidence of tissue iron deficiency correlated significantly with the severity of iron deficiency anemia.  相似文献

Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are prevalent among pregnant women. The extent to which iron deficiency affects maternal and neonatal health is uncertain. Existing data suggest that maternal iron deficiency anemia may be associated with adverse outcomes, including preterm delivery and higher maternal mortality. Further research is needed on the maternal and neonatal benefits of iron supplementation during pregnancy.  相似文献

Preventing iron deficiency through food fortification   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
One way to prevent iron deficiency anemia in developing countries is through the fortification of food products with iron. In addition to avoiding undesirable color and flavor changes, the main challenge is to protect the fortification iron from potential inhibitors of iron absorption present in commonly fortified foods.  相似文献

It has been suggested that iron plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, primarily by acting as a catalyst for the atherogenic modification of LDL. Although some epidemiological data suggest that high stored iron levels are an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease and that iron has been detected in both early and advanced atherosclerotic lesions, the evidence is often contradictory and inconclusive. We used the New Zealand White rabbit to investigate the effects of iron overload (FeO) and iron deficiency (FeD) on atherosclerosis. Groups of 7 rabbits were either iron loaded by injections of iron dextran (FeO group), iron depleted by phlebotomy (FeD group), or given injections of saline (control group) for a total of 9 weeks. All rabbits were fed a chow diet containing 1% (wt/wt) cholesterol for the last 6 weeks of the study. Iron and antioxidant status and cholesterol levels were assayed in plasma before cholesterol feeding (week 3) and at the time that the rabbits were killed (week 9). In addition, the susceptibility of LDL to oxidation was measured and pathological examination of the aortic arch and thoracic aorta performed at the end of the study. FeD significantly decreased the levels of blood hemoglobin, serum iron, and transferrin saturation compared with controls. Conversely, FeO significantly increased transferrin Fe saturation. FeO but not FeD decreased plasma cholesterol levels compared with control animals both before (P < .05) and after (P = .055) cholesterol feeding. Neither FeO nor FeD had a significant effect on the levels of antioxidants and lipid peroxidation products in plasma and aortic tissue or on the susceptibility of LDL to ex-vivo oxidation. FeO significantly decreased aortic arch lesion formation by 56% compared with controls (P < .05), whereas FeD had no significant effect. These results indicate that in this animal model, FeO decreases rather than increases atherosclerosis, likely because iron dextran exerts a hypocholesterolemic effect. Our data do not support the hypotheses that elevation of Fe stores increases or that a reduction of Fe stores by phlebotomy decreases the risk of coronary artery disease.  相似文献

The relative importance of hemoglobin (Hb) and non-Hb iron for physical work capacity was studied in 45 adult male and female subjects, with a range of Hb and serum iron levels. Maximal work capacity, heart rate, venous blood lactate and serum protein were measured before and after 1 week of treatment with Imferon, i.v. Even though some non-Hb related effects on parameters indicative of maximal work capacity were found, the main factor was Hb related. Subjects with low Hb-high serum iron worked longer than ones with low Hb-low iron. When work performed was similar, the marginal Hb-low iron group had a higher blood lactate concentration than the high Hb-high iron and marginal Hb-high iron groups. The coefficient of correlation between serum iron and post-exercise lactate levels was -0.41 (p less than 0.05). Even though neither of these groups showed a Hb response within 1 week of iron treatment, the initial low serum iron groups had significantly lower heart rates at a given work load relative to subjects with high iron but with a similar Hb level. This occurred both at rest and during light to heavy exercise. These results suggest that a rather rapid benefit of iron treatment is gained in iron-deficient subjects with severe and moderate anemia which cannot be accounted for by Hb changes. Although the primary factor which affects the physical work capacity of iron-deficient anemic subjects seems to be the Hb level, there also seems to be a significant non-Hb related effect of iron treatment as well.  相似文献

The electroretinograms (ERGs) from 14 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy were recorded before and after peripheral retinal ablation by photocoagulation. It was expected that the ERG would be reduced in amplitude in proportion to the area of retina destroyed by the treatment. The ablation treatment, carried out in a standard manner in each patient, resulted in a decrease of ERG amplitude that varied from 10 to 95% among the patients, and caused an increase in ERG latency and implicit time in several patients. This suggests a wide variability in the area of retina affected by the treatment, and the possibility of an effect of the procedure on adjacent untreated retina in some diabetic patients.  相似文献
