黄土窑居的结构体系完全由挖凿成型的纯原状土拱体作为窑居的自支撑体系,没有栋梁支撑,也没有其他支护,却能够居住百年甚至数百年而不坍塌.通过构造和受力分析,研究了黄土窑洞结构体系的合理性、可靠性和科学性,以期揭示窑居构筑过程中结构和力学奥秘;保障现存窑居的使用安全和新开发窑居的合理建造.

Environmental reporting in Nigerian newspapers: a longitudinal study

Nature has endowed man with many resources that if properly harnessed, would enable him to live comfortably on the earth. Over the centuries, the use and abuse of these resources has led to their depletion. As the 21st century draws near, people have become more sensitive to the effects of a degraded environment on their lives. The main tool for this sensitization is information. This study is devoted to the coverage of environmental information in four nationally distributed newspapers in Nigeria. The newspapers were studied over a 10‐year period to ascertain the level of coverage. Analysis showed that the energy sector is the most reported of all environmental issue and that noise pollution is the least reported environmental category. Suggestions are made on how to improve the level of environmental awareness among Nigerians.     

机器人登陆月球建造建筑——轮廓工艺的潜力

美国南加利福尼弧大学的比洛克·霍什内维斯（BehrokhKhoshnevis）教授发明的轮廓工艺（contourcrafting）是·种由数字控制的建造工艺，通过分层制造技术，可以直接按照计算机模型制造部件。由于无需使用传统混凝土施工中的模板，轮廓工艺可以大大降低成本和建造时间。通过机器人进行建造，最大限度地减少了 劳动力的消耗，使浚技术凸显巨大的潜力，尤其是拒相对危险的环境中，比如充满对人体极具损害的高度辐射的月球。目前，由美国字航局资助的研究正在探索使用轮廓工艺往月球上建造逢筑的潜力，建造所需材料来自月球表面丰厚的风化层。本文对该项研究进行介绍，并对在月球上使用轮廓工艺的优势进行评估。     

Short- and long-term behavior of EPS geofoam in reduction of lateral earth pressure on rigid retaining wall subjected to surcharge loading

Retaining walls are subjected to dead loads from backfill and adjacent structures, live loads and other loads from the vicinity of the structure. Retaining walls need to withstand earth pressure generated from above mentioned loads satisfactorily throughout their service life. Lateral earth thrust on retaining walls can be minimized by placing a compressible inclusion, such as, EPS geofoam, between the backfill and retaining wall. The present study is aimed at understanding both short- and long-term influence of EPS geofoam on surcharge induced lateral earth pressures on retaining walls through 1-g model studies. Four densities of geofoam in the range of 10–25 kg/m³ and three thicknesses of geofoam in the range of 25–75 mm were used in the present study. Lateral earth pressure at several locations along the height of the wall were monitored using earth pressure cells. Geofoam compression and backfill settlements under the surcharge load were also quantified using image analysis. From the series of model tests, it was observed that with the use of geofoam, lateral earth pressure on retaining wall was reduced under both short- and long-term loading conditions. However, higher reduction was observed under long-term loading.

The role of engineering and environmental geology in the reconstruction and development programme for South Africa

A reconstruction and development programme has been accepted by the Government of National Unity of South Africa to address the wrongs of the apartheid era. It is a people driven programme aimed at mobilising all the people and resources of the country to build a better future. The earth sciences can play a major part in this programme through their knowledge of earth resources and geological processes. The basic human rights such as owning a home and having access to safe drinking water and sanitation are all dependant on the identification of safe housing sites as well as the sustainable utilisation of natural resources such as construction materials, mineral deposits and groundwater. Engineering and environmental geologists have an obligation to future generations to find these safe sites for housing but also to ensure that environmental degradation is minimised. The possible input from all the different fields in geology is briefly outlined in this paper.
