This paper is mainly concerned about the pool boiling heat transfer behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) suspension in pure water and water containing 9.0% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate anionic surfactant (SDS). Three different concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0% by volume of CNT dispersed with water and water containing 9.0% by weight of sodium lauryl sulphate anionic surfactant (SDS) were prepared and boiling experiments were conducted over a stainless steel flat plate heater of size 30 mm2 and 0.44 mm thickness. The test results exhibit that the addition of carbon nanotubes increases boiling heat transfer coefficients of the base fluids. At a given heat flux of 500 kW/m2, the enhancement of heat transfer coefficient was found to be 1.5, 2.6 and 3.0 times of water corresponding to 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0% concentration of CNT by volume in water, respectively. In water–CNT–surfactant nanofluid, it was found that 0.5% of CNT concentration gives the highest enhancement of 1.7 compared with water. In both water and water–surfactant base fluids, it was observed that the enhancement factor for 0.25% of CNT first increases up to the heat flux of 66 kW/m2 and then decreases for higher heat fluxes. Further, the overall heat transfer coefficient enhancement in the water–CNT nanofluids is approximately two times higher than that in the water–CNT–surfactant nanofluids. With increasing heat flux, however, the enhancement was concealed due to vigorous bubble generation for both water–CNT and water–CNT–surfactant nanofluids. Foaming was also observed over the liquid-free surface in water–CNT–surfactant nanofluids during the investigation. No fouling over the test-section surface was observed after experimentation.  相似文献

Research on pool boiling of nanofluids has shown contradicting trends in the heat transfer coefficient (HTC). Such trends have been attributed, in part, to nanoparticle deposition on the heater surface. An experimental investigation of the transient nature of nanoparticle deposition and its effect on the HTC of pool boiling of nanofluids at various concentrations has been carried out. Pool boiling experiments have been conducted on a horizontal flat copper surface for alumina (40–50 nm) water based nanofluids at concentrations of 0.01, 0.1 and 0.5 vol.%. Nanofluids boiling experiments have been followed by pure water boiling experiments on the same nanoparticle-deposited (NPD) surfaces. This technique has been employed in order to separate the effect of nanoparticle deposition from the effect of nanofluids properties on the HTC. Contrary to what was expected, boiling of pure water on the NPD surface produced using the highest concentration nanofluid resulted in the highest HTC. A closer look at the nature of the NPD surfaces explained such trend. A new approach using a transient surface factor in Rohsenow correlation has been proposed to account for the transient nature of nanoparticle deposition. The applicability of such approach at different concentrations has been investigated.  相似文献

This paper reports an experimental study on convective boiling heat transfer of nanofluids and de-ionized water flowing in a multichannel. The test copper plate contains 50 parallel rectangular minichannels of hydraulic diameter 800 μm. Experiments were performed to characterize the local heat transfer coefficients and surface temperature using copper–water nanofluids with very small nanoparticles concentration. Axial distribution of local heat transfer is estimated using a non-intrusive method. Only responses of thermocouples located inside the wall are used to solve inverse heat conduction problem. It is shown that the distribution of the local heat flux, surface temperature, and local heat transfer coefficient is dependent on the axial location and nanoparticles concentration. The local heat transfer coefficients estimated inversely are close to those determined from the correlation of Kandlikar and Balasubramanian [An extension of the flow boiling correlation to transition, laminar and deep laminar flows in minichannels and microchannels, Heat Transfer Eng. 25 (3) (2004) 86–93.] for boiling water. It is shown that the local heat flux, local vapor quality, and local heat transfer coefficient increase with copper nanoparticles concentration. The surface temperature is high for de-ionized water and it decreases with copper nanoparticles concentration.  相似文献

The pool nucleate boiling heat transfer experiments of water (H2O) based and alcohol (C2H5OH) based nanofluids and nanoparticles-suspensions on the plain heated copper surface were carried out. The study was focused on the sorption and agglutination phenomenon of nanofluids on a heated surface. The nanofluids consisted of the base liquid, the nanoparticles and the surfactant. The nanoparticles-suspensions consisted of the base liquid and nanoparticles. The both liquids of water and alcohol and both nanoparticles of CuO and SiO2 were used. The surfactant was sodium dodecyl benzene sulphate (SDBS). The experimental results show that for nanofluids, the agglutination phenomenon occurred on the heated surface when the wall temperature was over 112 °C and steady nucleated boiling experiment could not be carried out. The reason was that an unsteady porous agglutination layer was formed on the heated surface. However, for nanoparticles-suspensions, no agglutination phenomenon occurred on the heating surface and the steady boiling could be carried out in the whole nucleate boiling region. For the both of alcohol based nanofluids and nano-suspensions, no agglutination phenomenon occurred on the heating surface and steady nucleate boiling experiment could be carried out in the whole nucleate boiling region whose wall temperature did not exceed 112 °C. The boiling heat transfer characteristics of the nanofluids and nanoparticles-suspensions are somewhat poor compared with that of the base fluids, since the decrease of the active nucleate cavities on the heating surface with a very thin nanoparticles sorption layer. The very thin nanoparticles sorption layer also caused a decrease in the solid–liquid contact angle on the heating surface which leaded to an increase of the critical heat flux (CHF).  相似文献

We measured the critical heat flux (CHF) and boiling heat transfer coefficient (BHTC) of water-based Al2O3 (alumina) nanofluids. To elucidate the stabilizer effect on CHF and BHTC of alumina/water nanofluids, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as a stabilizer. The plate copper heater (10 × 10 mm2) is used as the boiling surface and the concentration of alumina nanoparticle varies 0–0.1 vol.%. The results show that the BHTC of the nanofluids becomes lower than that of the base fluid as the concentration of nanoparticles increases while CHF of it becomes higher. It is found that the increase of CHF is directly proportional to the effective boiling surface area and the reduction of BHTC is mainly attributed to the blocking of the active nucleation cavity and the increase of the conduction resistance by the nanoparticle deposition on the boiling surface.  相似文献

This paper deals with a study of enhanced critical heat flux (CHF) and burnout heat flux (BHF) in pool boiling of water with suspended silica nanoparticles using Nichrome wires and ribbons. Previously the current authors and other researchers have reported three-digit percentage increase in critical heat flux in silica nanofluids. This study investigates the effect of various heater surface dimensions, cross-sectional shapes as well as surface modifications on pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of water and water-based nanofluids. Our data suggest that the CHF and BHF decrease as heater surface area increases. For concentrations from 0.1 vol% to 2 vol%, the deposition of the particles on the wire allows high heat transfer through inter-agglomerate pores, resulting in a nearly 3-fold increase in burnout heat flux at very low concentrations. The nanoparticle deposition plays a major role through variation in porosity. The CHF enhancement is non-monotonic with respect to concentration. As the concentration is increased, the CHF and BHF decrease prior to increasing again at higher concentrations. Results show a maximum of 270% CHF enhancement for ribbon-type heaters. The surface morphology of the heater was investigated using SEM and EDS analyses, and it was inferred that the 2 vol% concentration deposition coating had higher porosity and rate of deposition compared with 0.2 vol% case.  相似文献

Nanofluid is a new class of heat transfer fluids engineered by dispersing metallic or non-metallic nanoparticles with a typical size of less than 100 nm in the conventional heat transfer fluids. Their use remarkably augments the heat transfer potential of the base liquids. This article presents the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the TiO2-water nanofluids flowing in a horizontal double tube counter-flow heat exchanger under turbulent flow conditions, experimentally. TiO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 21 nm dispersed in water with volume concentrations of 0.2–2 vol.% are used as the test fluid. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid is higher than that of the base liquid and increased with increasing the Reynolds number and particle concentrations. The heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids was approximately 26% greater than that of pure vol.%, and the results also show that the heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluids at a volume concentration of 2.0 vol.% was approximately 14% lower than that of base fluids for given conditions. For the pressure drop, the results show that the pressure drop of nanofluids was slightly higher than the base fluid and increases with increasing the volume concentrations. Finally, the new correlations were proposed for predicting the Nusselt number and friction factor of the nanofluids, especially.  相似文献

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study effects of surfactant additive on microscale boiling under pulse heating over a Pt microheater (140 × 100 μm2) fabricated in a trapezoidal microchannel (600 μm in width and 150 μm in depth). Experiments are carried out for six different surfactant concentrations of Triton X-100 ranging from 47 ppm to 2103 ppm, for mass flux in the range from 45 kg/m2 s to 225 kg/m2 s, pulse width in the range from 50 μs to 2 ms, and heat flux in the range from 3 MW/m2 to 65 MW/m2. As in existing work on pool boiling under steady heating, it is found that nucleate boiling becomes more vigorous and heat transfer is enhanced greatly with the addition of surfactant with maximum boiling heat transfer occurs at the critical micelle concentration (cmc). Furthermore, these maximum values of boiling heat transfer coefficient increase with decreasing pulse width. When concentration is below cmc, the heat flux needed for nucleation increases with increasing concentration and the nucleation temperature is reduced. When concentration is higher than cmc, the boiling heat transfer coefficient decreases and nucleation temperature is higher than that of pure water.  相似文献

We study the pool boiling heat transfer on the microheater surface with and without nanoparticles by pulse heating. Nanofluids are the mixture of de-ionized water and Al2O3 particles with 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 1.0% weight concentrations. The microheater is a platinum surface by 50 × 20 μm. Three types of bubble dynamics were identified. The first type of bubble dynamics is for the boiling in pure water, referring to a sharp microheater temperature increase once a new pulse cycle begins, followed by a continuous temperature increase during the pulse duration stage. Large bubble is observed on the microheater surface and it does not disappear during the pulse off stage. The second type of bubble dynamics is for the nanofluids with 0.1% and 0.2% weight concentrations. The microheater surface temperature has a sharp increase at the start of a new pulse cycle, followed by a slight decrease during the pulse duration stage. Miniature bubble has oscillation movement along the microheater length direction, and it disappears during the pulse off stage. The third type of bubble dynamics occurs at the nanofluid weight concentration of 0.5% and 1.0%. The bubble behavior is similar to that in pure water, but the microheater temperatures are much lower than that in pure water. A structural disjoining pressure causes the smaller contact area between the dry vapor and the heater surface, decreasing the surface tension effect and resulting in the easy departure of miniature bubbles for the 0.1% and 0.2% nanofluid weight concentrations. For the 0.5% weight concentration of nanofluids, coalescence of nanoparticles to form larger particles is responsible for the large bubble formation on the heater surface. The microlayer evaporation heat transfer and the heat transfer mechanisms during the bubble departure process account for the higher heat transfer coefficients for the 0.1% and 0.2% nanofluid weight concentrations. The shortened dry area between the bubble and the heater surface, and the additional thin nanofluid liquid film evaporation heat transfer, account for the higher heat transfer coefficient for the 0.5% nanofluid weight concentration, compared with the pure water runs.  相似文献

Using TiO2–water nanofluids as the test liquid, pool boiling experiments were carried out to investigate the dependence of the nucleate boiling heat transfer, surface wettability and critical heat flux (CHF) on the boiling time in nanofluids. In the experiments performed at sufficiently high nanoparticle concentrations, the boiling heat transfer first degraded, then improved, and finally reached an equilibrium state. It was hence supposed that the present nanofluids had competing effects to deteriorate and enhance the nucleate boiling heat transfer. As for the surface wettability and CHF, the static contact angle asymptotically decreased whilst the CHF asymptotically increased with an increase in the boiling time. The maximum CHF enhancement measured in the present experiments was 91%, and strong correlation was found between the contact angle and the CHF. Although the boiling time needed to achieve the maximum CHF enhancement was less than a minute at high particle concentrations, a longer time of the order of 1 h was necessary at the lowest particle concentration tested in this work. This experimental result indicated that sufficient attention should be paid to the boiling time effect particularly in industrial applications of nanofluids to emergency cooling.  相似文献

Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of a refrigerant-based-nanofluid was investigated at different nanoparticle concentrations and pressures. TiO2 nanoparticles were mixed with the refrigerant HCFC 141b at 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05 vol%. The experiment was performed using a cylindrical copper tube as a boiling surface. Pool boiling experiments of nanofluid were conducted and compared with that of the base refrigerant. The results indicate that the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer deteriorated with increasing particle concentrations, especially at high heat fluxes. At 0.05 vol%, the boiling heat transfer curves were suppressed. At high pressures of 400 and 500 kPa, the boiling heat transfer coefficient at a specific excess temperature was almost the same.  相似文献

Effect of nanoparticle size on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of refrigerant/oil mixture with nanoparticles was investigated experimentally. For the preparation of the test fluid, refrigerant R113, ester oil VG68, and Cu nanoparticles with three different average diameters of 20, 50 and 80 nm were used. Experimental conditions include a saturation pressure of 101.3 kPa, heat fluxes from 10 to 80 kW m?2, nanoparticle concentrations in the nanoparticles/oil suspension from 0 to 30 wt%, and nanoparticles/oil suspension concentrations from 0 to 5 wt%. The experimental results indicate that the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of R113/oil mixture with Cu nanoparticles is enhanced by a maximum of 23.8% with the decrease of nanoparticle size from 80 to 20 nm under the present experimental conditions, and the enhancement increases with the decrease of nanoparticles/oil suspension concentration or the increase of nanoparticles concentrations in the nanoparticles/oil suspension. A general nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation for refrigerant/oil mixture with nanoparticles is proposed, and it agrees with 93% of the existing experimental data of refrigerant/oil mixture with nanoparticles within a deviation of ±20%.  相似文献

Nanofluid pool boiling experimental studies have shown mixed results. Recent literature is reviewed and compared here. It is demonstrated here that experiments can be fit to the traditional Rohsenow correlation by changing the surface constant, Csf. Therefore, this study suggests surface conditions are responsible for varying results. Some limited new experimental data are reported for Al2O3/H2O nanofluids using the hot wire method. Relative to the baseline of pure water, boiling incipience occurs 2–3 °C earlier, heat transfer is enhanced 25–40%, but sub-cooled boiling deteriorates. The aim of this paper is to present an inverse heat conduction method used for determining the local convective boiling heat transfer coefficient in mini channel for pure water, copper nanofluid with using three different concentrations of nanoparticles: 5 mg/L, 10 mg/L and 50 mg/L. Sequential specification function method is used to solve the IHCP and estimate the space-variable convective heat transfer coefficient. The uncertainties in the estimated in heat transfer coefficient are calculated using Bias and Variance errors. The technique is used in a series of numerical experiments to provide the optimum experimental design for a boiling heat transfer investigation.  相似文献

Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients of ammonia/water mixtures were measured at a pressure of 0.4 MPa on a horizontal heated fine wire having a diameter of 0.3 mm. The nucleate pool boiling aspects were observed, after the addition of a surface-active agent to the mixtures. The effects of the concentrations of ammonia and the surface-active agent on the coefficients were clarified experimentally for the ammonia fraction range 0.1  C  0.9 and surfactant concentration range 0  CS  3500 ppm. The results showed that the coefficients were enhanced at C  0.5 and in low heat flux ranges just after the onset of boiling. It was also found that the enhancement effect caused by the surfactant disappeared at surfactant concentrations of more than 1000 or 1500 ppm.  相似文献

Nucleate pool boiling of Al2O3 based aqueous nanofluid on flat plate heater has been studied experimentally. For boiling of nanofluid (< 0.1 vol.%) on heating surface with ratio of average surface roughness to average diameter of particles much less than unity when boiling continue to CHF, the heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid boiling reduces while critical heat flux (CHF) increases. CHF enhancement increased with volume fraction of nanoparticles. Atomic force microscope (AFM) images from boiling surface showed that after boiling of nanofluid the surface roughness increases or decreases depending on initial condition of heater surface. Changes in boiling surface topology during different regions of boiling, wettability and thermal resistance of heater surface owing to nanoparticles deposition cause to variations in nanofluids boiling performance.  相似文献

The pool boiling behavior of low concentration nanofluids (?1 g/l) was experimentally studied over a flat heater at 1 atm. Boiling of nanofluids produces a thin nanoparticle film, on the heater surface, which in turn is believed to increase the critical heat flux. The present study also indicates that the nanoparticle deposition results in transient characteristics in the nucleate boiling heat transfer. Finally, this study investigates possible causes responsible for the deposition of nanoparticle on the heater surface. Experimental evidence shows that microlayer evaporation, during nanofluid boiling, is responsible for the nanoparticle coating formed on the heater surfaces.  相似文献

In this article, the effect of Carbon Nanotube (CNT) concentration and agitation on the heat transfer rate has been studied during immersion quenching in CNT nanofluids. For this purpose, CNT nanofluids were prepared by suspending chemically treated CNTs (TCNT) at four different concentrations in deionized (D.I) water without using any surfactant. Quench probes with a diameter of 20 mm and a length of 50 mm were machined from 304L stainless steel (SS) and quenched in water and CNT nanofluids with the CNT concentration ranging from 0.25 to 1.0 wt.%. The heat flux and temperature at the quenched surface were estimated based on the Inverse Heat Conduction (IHC) method using the temperature data recorded at 2 mm below the probe surface during quenching. The computation results showed that the peak heat flux increased with an increase in the CNT concentration up to 0.50 wt.% and started decreasing with further increase in the CNT concentration. The enhanced heat transfer performance of CNT nanofluids during quenching at lower concentration of CNTs is attributed to their higher effective thermal conductivity. The reduced heat transfer performance of CNT nanofluids having higher concentration of CNTs is due to the increased viscosity of CNT nanofluids. The effect of agitation on heat transfer rate during quenching has also been studied in this work by stirring the CNT nanofluid prepared with 0.50 wt.% of CNTs which recorded the maximum peak heat flux among the four concentrations. The effect of CNT nanofluid agitation was counter-intuitive and resulted in decreased heat transfer rate with the increase in agitation rate.  相似文献

Nanofluids, suspensions of nanoparticles (less than 100 nm) in a basefluid, have shown enhanced heat transfer characteristics. In this study, thermal performances of nanofluids in industrial type heat exchangers are investigated. Three mass particle concentrations of 2%, 4%, and 6% of silicon dioxide–water (SiO2–water) nanofluids are formulated by dispersing 20 nm diameter nanoparticles in distilled water. Experiments are conducted to compare the overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of water vs. nanofluids in laboratory-scale plate and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Experimental results show both augmentation and deterioration of heat transfer coefficient for nanofluids depending on the flow rate and nanofluid concentration through the heat exchangers. This trend could be explained by the counter effect of the changes in thermo-physical properties of fluids together with the fouling on the contact surfaces in the heat exchangers. The measured pressure drop while using nanofluids show an increase when compared to that of basefluid which could limit the use of nanofluids in industrial applications.  相似文献

In this paper an experimental study of convective boiling heat transfer of R-600a/oil/nanoparticle mixtures is investigated. The experimental setup was prepared with a smooth horizontal tube as a test section with the length and diameter of 9.5 and 103 mm, respectively, and pure R-600a was applied for evaluating the heat transfer enhancement. Six mixtures containing 1% weight fraction of R-600a/oil with different concentrations of CuO nanoparticles including 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 5.0% weight fraction of R-600a/oil/nanoparticle were used in our study.The mass velocity per cross area was considered at the range of 50–700 kg/m2 s for low vapor quality (ϕ < 0.25). The results showed that the convective boiling heat transfer coefficient will be increased by increasing the mass fraction of nanoparticles up to 2%, while by increasing the mass fraction of nanoparticles up to 5% the heat transfer coefficient will be reduced.  相似文献
