Heat transfer, flow friction and thermal performance factor characteristics in a tube fitted with delta-winglet twisted tape, using water as working fluid are investigated experimentally. Influences of the oblique delta-winglet twisted tape (O-DWT) and straight delta-winglet twisted tape (S-DWT) arrangements are also described. The experiments are conducted using the tapes with three twist ratios (y/w = 3, 4 and 5) and three depth of wing cut ratios (DR = d/w = 0.11, 0.21 and 0.32) over a Reynolds number range of 3000–27,000 in a uniform wall heat flux tube. The obtained results show that mean Nusselt number and mean friction factor in the tube with the delta-winglet twisted tape increase with decreasing twisted ratio (y/w) and increasing depth of wing cut ratio (DR). It is also observed that the O-DWT is more effective turbulator giving higher heat transfer coefficient than the S-DWT. Over the range considered, Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in a tube with the O-DWT are, respectively, 1.04–1.64, 1.09–1.95, and 1.05–1.13 times of those in the tube with typical twisted tape (TT). Empirical correlations for predicting Nusselt number and friction factor have been employed. The predicted data are within ±10% for Nusselt number and ±10% for friction factor.  相似文献

The thermophysical properties like thermal conductivity and viscosity of Al2O3 nanofluid is determined through experiments at different volume concentrations and temperatures and validated. Convective heat transfer coefficient and friction factor data at various volume concentrations for flow in a plain tube and with twisted tape insert is determined experimentally for Al2O3 nanofluid. Experiments are conducted in the Reynolds number range of 10,000–22,000 with tapes of different twist ratios in the range of 0 < H/D < 83. The heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of 0.5% volume concentration of Al2O3 nanofluid with twist ratio of five is 33.51% and 1.096 times respectively higher compared to flow of water in a tube. A generalized regression equation is developed for the estimation of Nusselt number and friction factor valid for both water and nanofluid in plain tube and with inserts under turbulent flow conditions.  相似文献

Influence of perforated helical twisted-tapes (P-HTTs) on the heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance characteristics under a uniform heat flux condition is reported. The P-HTTs were obtained by perforating typical helical twisted-tapes (HTTs) with a prospect to reduce the friction loss of fluid flow. The experiments were conducted using P-HTTs' three different diameter ratios (d/w) of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6, and three different perforation pitch ratios (s/w) of 1, 1.5 and 2. The helical pitch ratio and twist ratio were fixed at P/D = 2 and y/w = 3. Tests were performed for Reynolds number between 6000 and 20,000. The experiments using the plain tube and the tubes with HTTs were also carried out for assessment. The experimental results reveal that the use of P-HTTs leads to the reduction of friction loss as compare to that of HTT. Heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance factor increase as d/w decreases and s/w increases. For the present range, the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.28 is obtained by using the P-HTT with d/w = 0.2 and s/w = 2.0 at the Reynolds number of 6000. In addition, the empirical correlations for Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor give accurate predictions within ± 4%, ± 6% and ± 3%, respectively.  相似文献

This work deals with the experimental investigation on Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in a circular tube equipped with perforated twisted tape inserts with four different porosities of Rp = 1.6, 4.5, 8.9 and 14.7%. The experiments were conducted in a turbulent flow regime with Reynolds number ranging from 7200 to 49,800 using air as the working fluid under uniform wall heat flux boundary condition. The experimental results revealed that both heat transfer rate and friction factor of the tube fitted with perforated twisted tapes were significantly higher than those of the plain tube. Over the range investigated, Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in the tube with perforated twisted tape inserts was found to be 110 –340, 110 –360 and 28–59% higher than those of the plain tube values, respectively. In addition, the empirical correlations of Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor were formulated from the experimental results of tape inserts.  相似文献

The present study explored the effects of perforated double counter twisted tapes on heat transfer and fluid friction characteristics in a heat exchanger tube. The twisted tapes with four different porosities of Rp = 1.2, 4.6, 10.4 and 18.6% were used as counter-swirl flow generators in the test section. The experiments were conducted in a circular tube in turbulent flow regime with Reynolds number ranging from 7200 to 50,000 using air as the working fluid under uniform wall heat flux boundary condition. The experimental results demonstrated that the Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal enhancement efficiency were increased with decreasing porosity except porosity of 1.2%. The results also revealed that the heat transfer rate of the tube fitted with tapes were significantly increased with corresponding increase in friction factor. In the range of the present investigation, heat transfer rate and friction factor were obtained to be around 80 to 290% and 111 to 335% higher than those of the plain tube values, respectively. Based on constant blower power, the highest thermal enhancement efficiency of 1.44 was achieved. In addition, the empirical correlations of Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal enhancement efficiency were developed based on the experimental data.  相似文献

Turbulent convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of magnetic Fe3O4 nanofluid flowing through a uniformly heated horizontal circular tube with and without twisted tape inserts are estimated experimentally. Experiments are conducted in the particle volume concentration range of 0 < φ < 0.6%,twisted tape inserts of twist ratio in the range of 0 < H/D < 15and Reynolds number range of 3000 < Re < 22000. Heat transfer and friction factor enhancement of 0.6% volume concentration of Fe3O4 nanofluid in a plain tube with twisted tape insert of twist ratio H/D = 5 is 51.88% and 1.231 times compared to water flowing in a plain tube under same Reynolds number. Generalized regression equation is presented for the estimation of Nusselt number and friction factor for both water and Fe3O4 nanofluid in a plain tube and with twisted tape inserts under turbulent flow condition.  相似文献

In this paper, experimentally determined pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of flow of water in a 75-start spirally grooved tube with twisted tape insert are presented. Laminar to fully turbulent ranges of Reynolds numbers have been considered. The grooves are clockwise with respect to the direction of flow. Compared to smooth tube, the heat transfer enhancement due to spiral grooves is further augmented by inserting twisted tapes having twist ratios Y ? 10.15, 7.95 and 3.4. It is found that the direction of twist (clockwise and anticlockwise) influences the thermo-hydraulic characteristics. Constant pumping power comparisons with smooth tube characteristics show that in spirally grooved tube with and without twisted tape, heat transfer increases considerably in laminar and moderately in turbulent range of Reynolds numbers. However, for the bare spiral tube and for spiral tube with anticlockwise twisted tape (Y = 10.15), reduction in heat transfer is noticed over a transition range of Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

The article presents an experimental investigation on thermal performance enhancement in a constant heat-fluxed square duct fitted with combined twisted-tape and winglet vortex generators. The experiments are carried out for the airflow rate through the tested square duct fitted with both the vortex generators for Reynolds number from 4000 to 30,000. The effect of the combined twisted tape and rectangular winglet inserts on heat transfer and pressure drop presented in terms of respective Nusselt number and friction factor is experimentally investigated. The characteristics of the combined twisted-tape and winglet include two twist ratios (Y = 4 and 5), three winglet- to duct-height ratios, (RB = 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2), four winglet-pitch to tape-width ratios, (RP = 2, 2.5, 4 and 5) and a single attack angle of winglet, α = 30°. The experimental results reveal that the Nusselt number and friction factor for the combined twisted-tape and V-winglet increase with increasing RB but decreasing RP. The inserted duct at RB = 0.2, RP = 2 and Y = 4 provides the highest heat transfer rate and friction factor but the one at RB = 0.1, RP = 2 and Y = 4 yields the highest thermal performance. The application of combined vortex-flow devices gives thermal performance around 17% higher than the twisted tape alone.  相似文献

Convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of water/propylene glycol (70:30% by volume) based CuO nanofluids flowing in a plain tube are investigated experimentally under constant heat flux boundary condition. Glycols are normally used as an anti-freezing heat transfer fluids in cold climatic regions. Nanofluids are prepared by dispersing 50 nm diameter of CuO nanoparticles in the base fluid. Experiments are conducted using CuO nanofluids with 0.025%, 0.1% and 0.5% volume concentration in the Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 < Re < 10000 and considerable heat transfer enhancement in CuO nanofluids is observed. The effect of twisted tape inserts with twist ratios in the range of 0 < H/D < 15 on nanofluids is studied and further heat transfer augmentation is noticed. The increment in the pressure drop in the CuO nanofluids over the base fluid is negligible but the experimental results have shown a significant increment in the convective heat transfer coefficient of CuO nanofluids. The convective heat transfer coefficient increased up to 27.95% in the 0.5% CuO nanofluid in plain tube and with a twisted tape insert of H/D = 5 it is further increased to 76.06% over the base fluid at a particular Reynolds number. The friction factor enhancement of 10.08% is noticed and increased to 26.57% with the same twisted tape, when compared with the base fluid friction factor at the same Reynolds number. Based on the experimental data obtained, generalized regression equations are developed to predict Nusselt number and friction factor.  相似文献

The paper gives the basic results of experimental investigation of boiling heat transfer in heat-absorbing devices of the ITER thermonuclear reactor, which are subjected to one-side heating. The experimental data on heat transfer at nucleate and film boiling and on critical heat fluxes are obtained in the following range of parameters of water flow: pressure p = 0.7–2.0 MPa, mass flux G = 340–25 000 kg/(m2 s), and water temperature at the inlet Tin = 20–60 °C. A twisted tape is inserted in the circular channel in order to form swirling flow of water. The investigations are performed for tapes with different values of flow swirl coefficient, as well for test sections without a tape. Appropriate calculation formulas are derived, which reliably generalize the experimental data.  相似文献

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the effect of twisted tape inserts on heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop in a horizontal tube during swirl flow boiling of R-134a. The test-evaporator was an electrically heated horizontal copper tube and twisted tapes with different twist ratios of 6, 9, 12 and 15 were inserted one by one. The data were acquired at the refrigerant mass velocities of 54, 86, 114 and 136 kg/s m2. The twisted tape inserts increases the boiling heat transfer coefficients and the pressure drop across the test-evaporator. An empirical correlation has also been developed to predict the swirl flow pressure drop in the test-evaporator.  相似文献

Heat transfer performance and pressure drop tests were performed on a circular tube with small pipe inserts. These inserts with different spacer lengths (S = 100, 142.9 and 200 mm) and arc radii (R = 5, 10 and 15 mm) were tested at Reynolds numbers between 4000 and 18,000. Tap water was used as working fluid. The use of pipe inserts allowed for a high heat transfer coefficient with relatively low flow resistance. The Nusselt number and friction factor increase with the decrease in spacer length. Optimal results were obtained for S = 100 mm (R = 10 mm). Heat transfer rates and friction factors were enhanced by 2.09–2.67 and 1.59–1.85 times, respectively, to those in the plain tube. Performance evaluation criterion (PEC) values were approximately 1.79–2.17. The Nusselt number and friction factor increase with the decrease in arc radius. Small pipe inserts with R = 5 mm and S = 100 mm show maximal heat transfer rates of 2.61–3.33 and friction factors of 1.6–1.8 times those of the empty tube. The PEC values were 2.23–2.7. Compared with other inserts, pipe inserts can transfer more heat for the same pumping power for their unique structure.  相似文献

This paper presents an original experimental study on compound heat transfer enhancement in a tube fitted with serrated twisted tape. The serrations on two sides of the twisted tape with twist ratio of 1.56, 1.88, 2.81 or ∞ are the square-sectioned ribs with the identical rib-pitch and rib-height. The local Nusselt number and Fanning friction factor increase as the twist ratio decreases in the tube fitted with smooth or serrated twisted tape. In the Re range of 5000–25 000, heat transfer augmentation attributed to the serrated twisted tape falls in the range of 250–480% of the plain-tube level. That is about 1.25–1.67 times the heat transfer level in the tube fitted with smooth twisted tape. Fanning friction factors are respectively decreased and increased in the tubes fitted with smooth and serrated twisted tapes as Re increases. Based on the same pumping power consumption, the thermal performances of the tubes with smooth and serrated twisted tapes are compared. A set of empirical correlations that permits the evaluation of the Nusselt number and the Fanning friction factor in the developed flow region for the tubes fitted with smooth and serrated twisted tapes is generated for engineering applications.  相似文献

This study experimentally focuses on the effects of a swirl generator on the thermal performance of a heat exchanging tube. The applied swirl generator is a helically twisted tube with a five-lobe cross section. As the main outcome, the thermal performance of the test tube equipped with the swirl generator are evaluated using the heat transfer rate in the form of Nusselt number and pressure drop in the form of friction factor. Water is used as the working fluid in the experiments performed for different Reynolds numbers from 6000 to 30,000. The different values of twist-angle (90  θ  360) and length (2  l  4) are investigated as the main geometrical parameters of the swirl generator. The results show that the swirl generator offers an enhancement up to 85% in the Nusselt number and an increase up to 52% in the friction factor. Therefore, the swirl generator presents a thermal performance up to 1.65. This study presents some correlations to predict the Nusselt number and the friction factor of the test tube equipped with the swirl generator.  相似文献

The paper presents a comparative investigation of enhanced heat transfer and pressure loss by insertion of single twisted tape, full-length dual and regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes as swirl generators, in a round tube under axially uniform wall heat flux (UHF) conditions. The investigation encompassed the Reynolds number based on the inlet tube diameter (D) ranging from 4000 to 19,000. The experiments are performed using single twisted tapes and full-length dual twisted tapes with three different twist ratios (y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) and also regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes with three different space ratios (s/D = 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25). The effects of major parameters on heat transfer and friction factor are discussed and the results from both single and dual twisted tape inserts are compared with those from the plain tube. The result shows that the heat transfer of the tube with dual twisted tapes is higher than that of the plain tube with/without single twisted tape insert. For both single twisted tape and full-length dual twisted tapes, Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) tend to increase with decreasing twist ratio (y/w). The average Nusselt number and friction factor in the tube fitted with the full-length dual twisted tapes at y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0, are respectively 146%, 135% and 128%; and 2.56, 2.17 and 1.95 times of those in the plain tube. For the regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes, the heat transfer rate is decreased with increasing space ratio (s/D). The average Nusselt numbers in the tube fitted with the regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes (s/D) of 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 are respectively, 140%, 137% and 133% of that in the plain tube. With the similar trend mentioned above, all dual twisted tapes with free spacing yield lower heat transfer enhancement in comparison with the full-length dual twisted tapes (s/D = 0.0).  相似文献

Natural convection flows in a square cavity filled with a porous matrix has been studied numerically using penalty finite element method for uniformly and non-uniformly heated bottom wall, and adiabatic top wall maintaining constant temperature of cold vertical walls. Darcy–Forchheimer model is used to simulate the momentum transfer in the porous medium. The numerical procedure is adopted in the present study yields consistent performance over a wide range of parameters (Rayleigh number Ra, 103  Ra  106, Darcy number Da, 10−5  Da  10−3, and Prandtl number Pr, 0.71  Pr  10) with respect to continuous and discontinuous thermal boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented in terms of stream functions, temperature profiles and Nusselt numbers. Non-uniform heating of the bottom wall produces greater heat transfer rate at the center of the bottom wall than uniform heating case for all Rayleigh numbers but average Nusselt number shows overall lower heat transfer rate for non-uniform heating case. It has been found that the heat transfer is primarily due to conduction for Da  10−5 irrespective of Ra and Pr. The conductive heat transfer regime as a function of Ra has also been reported for Da  10−4. Critical Rayleigh numbers for conduction dominant heat transfer cases have been obtained and for convection dominated regimes the power law correlations between average Nusselt number and Rayleigh numbers are presented.  相似文献

This article presents the condensation heat transfer and flow characteristics of R-134a flowing through corrugated tubes experimentally. The test section is a horizontal counter-flow concentric tube-in-tube heat exchanger 2000 mm in length. A smooth copper tube and corrugated copper tubes having inner diameters of 8.7 mm are used as an inner tube. The outer tube is made from smooth copper tube having an inner diameter of 21.2 mm. The corrugation pitches used in this study are 5.08, 6.35, and 8.46 mm. Similarly, the corrugation depths are 1, 1.25, and 1.5 mm, respectively. The test conditions are performed at saturation temperatures of 40–50 °C, heat fluxes of 5–10 kW/m2, mass fluxes of 200–700 kg/m2 s, and equivalent Reynolds numbers of 30000–120000. The Nusselt number and two-phase friction factor obtained from the corrugated tubes are significantly higher than those obtained from the smooth tube. Finally, new correlations are developed based on the present experimental data for predicting the Nusselt number and two-phase friction factor for corrugated tubes.  相似文献

In this paper, mixed convection flow and heat transfer around a long cylinder of square cross-section under the influence of aiding buoyancy are investigated in the vertical unconfined configuration (Reynolds number, Re = 1–40 and Richardson number, Ri = 0–1). The semi-explicit finite volume method implemented on the collocated grid arrangement is used to solve the governing equations along with the appropriate boundary conditions. The onset of flow separation occurs between Re = 1–2, between Re = 2–3 and between Re = 3–4 for Ri = 0, 0.5 and 1, respectively. The flow is found to be steady for the range of conditions studied here. The friction, pressure and total drag coefficients are found to increase with Richardson number, i.e., as the influence of aiding buoyancy increases drag coefficients increase at the constant value of the Reynolds number. The temperature field around the obstacle is presented by isotherm contours at the Prandtl number of 0.7 (air). The local and average Nusselt numbers are calculated to give a detailed study of heat transfer over each surface of the square cylinder and an overall heat transfer rate and it is found that heat transfer increases with increase in Reynolds number and/or Richardson number. The simple expressions for the wake length and average cylinder Nusselt number are obtained for the range of conditions covered in this work.  相似文献

Experimental investigation of heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of circular tube fitted with full-length helical screw element of different twist ratio, and helical screw inserts with spacer length 100, 200, 300, and 400 mm have been studied with uniform heat flux under turbulent flow condition. The experimental data obtained are verified with those obtained from plain tube published data. The effect of spacer length on heat transfer augmentation and friction factor, and the effect of twist ratio on heat transfer augmentation and friction factor have been presented separately. The decrease in Nusselt number for the helical twist with spacer length is within 10% for each subsequent 100 mm increase in spacer length. The friction factor for helical twist insert with spacer length 100 mm is very much close to value of friction factor for full-length helical twist for all Reynolds number and decreases by 5% for each 100 mm increment space length indicating that there is no much reduction in pumping power. Hence the helical screw inserts with spacer can only be used for heat augmentation only in turbulent flow with less reduction in pumping power. Empirical correlation were formed for explaining data and found to fit experimental data within ±10%, and ±20%, respectively, for Nusselt number and friction factor.  相似文献
