The field responses ofHylobius abietis (L.) andH. pinastri (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to various combinations of two host monoterpenes and ethanol were studied using baited pitfall traps. Both species were attracted to -pinene, and when ethanol was added the attraction increased by 5–16 times. Limonene completely inhibited the attraction to -pinene, even when the release rate of limonene was only about 1/50 that of -pinene. The catches in traps with -pinene and limonene as well as with limonene alone were similar in size to catches in empty control traps, i.e., no true repellent effect was demonstrated. When limonene was added to the combination of -pinene and ethanol on old clear-cuttings, the catch ofH. pinastri was completely inhibited while that ofH. abietis was reduced by two thirds. On fresh clear-cuttings the inhibitory effect of limonene on the attraction to the -pinene-ethanol combination was small or absent. Some aspects of host interactions are discussed as are practical implications regarding the choice of seedling material for planting and prospects of finding deterrents for protecting seedlings from pine weevil damage.  相似文献

Pine weevils (Hylobius abietis) fed less on bark of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) than on bark of Scots pine (P. sylvestris). Two pine weevil antifeedants, ethyl trans-cinnamate and ethyl 2,3-dibromo-3-phenyl-propanoate, were isolated from bark of lodgepole pine. These two compounds significantly reduced pine weevil feeding in a laboratory bioassay. In field assays, the second compound significantly decreased pine weevil damage on planted seedlings. Ethyl 2,3-dibromo-3-phenylpropanoate has not previously been reported as a natural product.  相似文献

Field trapping of the American palm weevil (APW),Rhynchophorus palmarum, showed that the combination of caged male APWs and palm stem was much more attractive to APWs of both sexes than palm stem alone. Caged female APWs did not enhance the attractiveness of the palm. Caged APWs without palm stem were not attractive. Virgin laboratory-bred males were highly attractive to APWs of both sexes in a two-choice pitfall olfactometer, whereas virgin laboratory-bred females were not. Adsorbenttrapped volatiles from virgin laboratory-bred males reproduced the effect of living males, giving evidence for a male-produced aggregation pheromone in this species. Wild-mated APWs of both sexes were as responsive to the aggregation pheromone as virgin laboratory-bred APWs. This is the first record of chemical communication in this species. These results have prompted investigations into the chemical identification of the aggregation pheromone.  相似文献

The attraction ofS. lineatus to live baits comprisingS. lineatus feeding onVicia faba (L.) was studied in a field experiment in the early spring. There was clear evidence that maleS. lineatus produced an aggregation pheromone which attracted approximately equal numbers of both sexes from overwintering sites. No evidence was obtained for the production, in the spring, of any semiochemical by female weevils.Coleoptera: Curculionidae.  相似文献

Extracts of Amphimallon solstitiale (L.), a well known, widely distributed and rather common European scarab beetle, were analyzed by GC-MS and GC-EAD. Acetoin -(R):(S) < 9:1 - as well as 2,3-butanediol -(2R,3R):(2S,3S) :meso = 1:1:9 - were present in extracts of both males and females. Although (2S,3S)-butanediol did not show any EAD activity, the other compounds elicited strong responses exclusively with male antennae. In contrast, several EAD active green leaf volatiles were detected equally well by male and female antennae. During preliminary field bioassays, (R)-acetoin was highly attractive to swarming males, whereas neither rac-acetoin nor the 2,3-butanediols showed activity. Therefore, (R)-acetoin is the female sex pheromone of A. solstitiale.  相似文献

Spring and fall adults of the white pine weevil,Pissodes strobi (Peck), were exposed in no-choice and two-choice tests to bark from water-stressed and non-water-stressed white pine (Pinus strobus L.), which had also been exposed or not exposed to weevil attack. This experiment demonstrated that the weevils could discriminate between bark from water-stressed white pine and preferred bark from the nonstressed plants. The weevils also preferred bark from nonstressed plants that were previously exposed to weevil damage. Spring and fall adults displayed the same feeding preferences. No sex differences were found in feeding preferences. Less nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were found in bark from the nonstressed plants, and the potassium level was higher in damaged plants. We expect that the biological performance of the weevil should be favored by vigorously growing plants rather than by stressed plants.  相似文献

TheNp mutant of pea (Pisum sativum L.) is characterized by two physiological responses: growth of callus under pea weevil (Bruchus pisorum L., Coleoptera: Bruchidae) oviposition on pods, and formation of neoplastic callus on pods of indoor-grown plants. Although these two responses are conditioned byNp, they are anatomically and physiologically distinguishable, based on sites of origin, distribution pattern, and sensitivity to plant hormones. Further characterization of the response to extracts of pea weevil showed that response of excised pods, measured by callus formation, was log-linear, and treatment with as little as 10–4 weevil equivalents produced a detectable response. Mated and unmated females contained similar amounts of callus-inducing compound(s), and immature females contained significantly less of the compound(s). Female vetch bruchids (Bruchus brachialis F., Coleoptera: Bruchidae), a related species, contained callus-inducing compound(s), but usually less than pea weevils on a per weevil basis. Males of both species contained less than 10% of the activity of the mature females. Extracts of female black vine weevils, a nonbruchid species, did not stimulate callus formation. Based on partitioning and TLC analysis, the biologically active constitutent(s) was stable and nonpolar. Thus, theNp allele probably conditions sensitivity to a nonpolar component of pea weevil oviposition as a mechanism of resistance to the weevil.  相似文献

Laboratory and field assays were conducted to determine if palmetto weevil,Rhynchophorus cruentatus (F.), adults produce an aggregation pheromone. Attraction of females in a Y-tube olfactometer to conspecific males was greater than to clean air. Male and female attraction to conspecific male volatiles combined with host-palm,Sabal palmetto (Walter), volatiles was greater than to host-palm volatiles alone. Similarly, more weevils were caught in the field in traps baited with conspecific males plus host-palm tissue than in similar traps baited with only males, or palm tissue, or females, or females plus palm tissue. These results suggest thatR. cruentatus males produce an aggregation pheromone(s) that is highly attractive to conspecific adults of both sexes when combined with host-palm volatiles. This study is an important step towards understanding the chemical ecology ofR. cruentatus.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the effects of sex pheromone dosage and lure age on movement of male sweetpotato weevils (SPW),Cylas formicarius elegantulus (Summers), using mark-release-recapture techniques. SPW trap counts from various downwind distances were compared for dosages ranging from 0.01 to 10.0 g and lure ages ranging from fresh (0 days old) to 64 days old. The percentages of male SPW recaptured decreased with an increase in release distance and decreased with a decrease in dosage at each corresponding distance. Most SPW were caught within the first 16-hr period. Slopes of percent recapture vs. release distance for the two higher dosages (10 g and 1.0 g) differed from those of the two lower dosages (0.1 and 0.01 g) but did not differ from each other. Intercepts were similar among the three higher dosages. Slopes did not differ among the five lure ages examined. Intercepts differed between fresh (0 days old) and 24-day-old septa at 16 hr and between fresh (0 days old) and 34-day-old septa at 40 hr. Previous exposure to pheromone (conditioning) did not increase percentages of SPW recaptured. Results indicate that male SPW are capable of traversing distances of at least 280 m in 16 hr. The pheromone tested in this study appears to be effective at dosages lower than any other coleopteran sex-pheromone system. Incorporation of this pheromone into a SPW management system may effectively reduce the use of insecticides.  相似文献

The responses ofCeutorhynchus assimilis Payk. (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) to the odor of overwintered and new generation weevils were studied using an olfactometer, choice tests in a laboratory cage, field tests using sticky traps baited with live weevils, and by electroantennograms (EAG's). Unmated male weevils and, to a lesser extent, female weevils of the overwintered generation were attracted to the odor of live unmated over-wintered female weevils. New generation weevils exhibited no behavioral response to conspecific odor. Male and female weevils of the overwintered generation exhibited positive EAGs to hexane extracts of overwintered female weevils, whereas EAGs of new-generation weevils of either sex were unresponsive to these extracts. This suggests that the unmated female weevils from the overwintered generation produce a volatile chemical or chemicals that attracts unmated male and female weevils. The new generation of female weevils does not produce this attractive chemical before overwintering, and male and female weevils of this generation can not detect the chemical(s) via their antennal chemoreceptors until they have undergone their overwintering period.  相似文献

The cuticular lipids of male and femaleFannia femoralis were similar for recently emerged insects but soon began to develop chromatographic patterns characteristic of each sex. Mature females contained more C31 and C33 monoolefin in the cuticular lipid than males. Also, the double bonds in the monoolefins of the female lipid were situated predominantly at the eleventh and thirteenth carbons, while most of those from the males were centrally located in the molecule or at the ninth carbon. The female C31 monoolefin stimulated copulation by the males, but more mating activity occurred when the saturated hydrocarbons present in the female cuticular lipids were added. The synthetic monoolefin most active as a mating stimulant pheromone was (Z)-11-hentriacontene, but the addition of female alkanes or of syntheticn-alkanes to (Z)-11-hentriacontene increased the activity of the synthetic pheromone.A portion of a dissertation intended for submission by the first author to the Graduate School of the University of Maryland in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree.Mention of a proprietary or commercial product in this paper does not constitute an endorsement of this product by the U.S. Department of Agriculture or the University of Maryland.  相似文献

Chromatograms of the cuticular lipids washed from newly emerged male and femaleFannia pusio were nearly identical. By the time the flies were 1 day old, the chromatographic profiles for the sexes were different. Mature females contained more C31- and C33-hydrocarbons than the males. The double bonds of the female monoolefins were mostly at the eleventh and thirteenth carbons, but those of the males were predominantly at the ninth carbon. Most active in stimulating copulation by males were the unbranched monoolefins with 31 and 33 carbons from the females. When they were synthesized and tested, the most active compound was (Z)-11-hentriacontene.A portion of a dissertation intended for submission by the first author to the Graduate School of the University of Maryland in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree.Mention of a proprietary or commercial product in this paper does not constitute an endorsement of this product by the U.S. Department of Agriculture or the University of Maryland.  相似文献

The chirality of the pheromone of the rice weevil,Sitophilus oryzae (L.), and the maize weevil,S. zeamais (Motschulsky), 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone, was determined using an acetyl lactate derivatization procedure. Maize weevils were shown to produce >98% 4S,5R. Determination was more difficult with rice weevils due to a smaller quantity of insect extract, but they were shown to produce at least 92% 4S, 5R.The attractancy of the four synthetic stereoisomers of 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone was tested using rice and maize weevils. As expected, both species were most strongly attracted to the 4S, 5R enantiomer. Maize weevils also showed low but significant responses (P < 0.05) to both 4R, 5R and 4S,5S. Rice weevils showed a highly significant (P < 0.01) response to 4R, 5S, although it was only about one third the response to 4S, 5R. Thus, (4S,5R)-5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone is clearly the major component of the pheromone of bothS. zeamais andS. oryzae. This article reports the results of research only. 5-Methyl-4-octanol is the major aggregation pheromone of the palmetto weevil,Rhynchophorus cruentatus (F.). The pheromone (cruentol) was identified by coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic (GC-EAD) analysis of male-produced volatiles, coupled GC-mass spectrometry (MS) in electron impact and chemical ionization mode, and coupled GC-high resolution MS. In laboratory and field assays, a diastereomeric mixture of synthetic cruentol greatly enhanced attraction of weevils to cabbage palmetto,Sabal palmetto (Walter), stem tissue, indicating that cruentol and host volatiles are synergistically attractive. An attractive lure in combination with efficient traps should facilitate development of semiochemical-based management forR. cruentatus.  相似文献

Preliminary bioassays with the horn fly,Haematobia irritans (L.), suggested that a mating stimulant pheromone was involved in horn fly courtship behavior. Virgin males readily courted live or dead females but rarely courted live males, dead males, or females thoroughly washed with hexane. The bioassay used was the response of virgin males to treated male horn flies. Results indicated that female cuticular hydrocarbons induced male courtship behavior. Specifically, the female paraffin and monoolefin fractions were biologically active when bioassayed alone or in combination. Three synthetic monoolefins previously shown to be the major components in the female monoolefin fraction were active in bioassays. The compoundsZ-5-tricosene,Z-9-pentacosene, andZ-9-heptacosene were each active, but greater male courtship behavior was observed when these three compounds were bioassayed in combination.Diptera: Muscidae.A portion of a dissertation by the first author to the graduate school of the University of Florida in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the PhD degree.Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No. 2078.Mention of a proprietary or commercial product does not constitute an endorsement by either the University of Florida or the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  相似文献

Linden (Tilia cordata) bark was shown to contain an antifeedant effective against the large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis. Soxhlet extraction of inner and outer bark resulted in an extract that showed antifeedant activity in a microfeeding assay. The extract was fractionated by chromatography on silica gel using gradient elution with solvents of increasing polarity. The content of the fractions obtained was monitored by thin layer- and gas chromatography. Fractions of similar chemical composition were merged. Two of the 17 fractions showed antifeedant activity in the microfeeding assay. Nonanoic acid was identified in both of these fractions. Subsequent testing in the microfeeding assay showed that nonanoic acid possessed strong antifeedant activity against H. abietis adults.  相似文献

Evidence for a male-produced aggregation pheromone inSitophilus granarius is reported. Hexane extracts of Tenax®-trapped volatiles from males held on wheat were attractive to both sexes in a multiple-choice olfactometer and pitfall bioassay chamber. A quantitative relationship existed between days of insect exposure on disks and degree of responsiveness. The maximum response was to 35 insect-day-equivalents. Diel-related activity showed both sexes responsive during photophase and nonresponsive during scotophase.Coleoptera: Curculionidae.Contribution to Regional Research Project NC151, Marketing and Delivery of Quality Cereals and Oilseeds in Domestic and Foreign Markets.Mention of a commercial or proprietary product does not constitute an endorsement by the USDA.  相似文献

Since several species of predatory ants show some kind of repulsion towards the first-instar larvae (FIL) ofDiaprepes abbreviatus L., the predatory behavior ofSolenopsis geminata (F.), a common ant in the citrus groves in Guadeloupe, was studied. Different extracts of larvae were disposed on egg masses ofD. abbreviatus and presented as prey to the ants, both in the field and in the laboratory. The ants are repelled by the FIL extracts. The allelochemicals involved are produced in large amounts, from 5 to 20 ng per larva. Physiochemical analyses have led to the identification of two sesquiterpenes of molecular weight 218 and 234, secreted in the respective proportions of 65 and 35%.  相似文献

Production of 4-methyl-5-nonanol, and 4-methyl-5-nonanone by two sympatric Asian palm weevils,Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Oliv.) andR. vulneratus (Panz.) suggested that enantiospecificity of either compound could impart species specificity of pheromone communication. Weevil-produced, racemic 4-methyl-5-nonanol and 4-methyl-5-nonanone and their stereoselectively synthesized optical isomers were subjected to gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS) on a chiral Cyclodex-B column. Only theS,S stereoisomer of 4-methyl-5-nonanol was EAD active and was produced by bothR. ferrugineus andR. vulneratus. Production and EAD activity of (S)-4-methyl-5-nonanone exceeded that of its antipode in both weevils. In field experiments in Java. (4S, 5S)-4-methyl-5-nonanol and the stereoisomeric mixture were equally attractive. The 4R,5R stereoisomer was inactive. The corresponding ketone enantiomers neither enhanced nor reduced attraction to (4S,5S)-4-methyl-5-nonanol. Lack of apparent differences betweenR. ferrugineus andR. vulneratus pheromones suggests that synonomy of both weevils should be considered unless other pre- or postzygotic reproductive isolating mechanisms are disclosed in future studies.  相似文献

Detection of weakened hosts from a distance by bark beetles through olfaction was investigated in field experiments. No significant numbers of Scolytidae were attracted to anaerobically treated pine bolts, stem disks, or sugar and ponderosa pine bark including phloem. Treatment of living trees with cacodylic acid induced attacks byDendroctonus brevicomis, D. ponderosae, Ips latidens, Gnathotrichus retusus, andPityophthorus scalptor, beginning two weeks after treatment. There was no significant difference between landing rates ofD. brevicomis andD. ponderosae on screened treated trees and screened controls. There was a significant increase in landing rates ofG. retusus andI. latidens, because both species had penetrated the screen and produced pheromones. Tree frilling alone did not increase the landing rate of bark beetles. Freezing of the lower trunk with dry ice did not increase significantly the landing rate ofD. brevicomis, D. ponderosae, G. retusus, orI. latidens on screened trees, whereas unscreened frozen trees were attacked by all four species. There was no significantly higher landing rate byD. brevicomis, D. ponderosae, I. paraconfusus, I. latidens, G. retusus, orHylurgops subcostulatus on screened trees evidencing symptoms of severe infection by the root pathogenVerticicladiella wagenerii, than on symptornless trees. These experiments show thatD. brevicomis, D. ponderosae, I. paraconfusus, I. latidens, andG. retusus land, apparently indiscriminately, on healthy and stressed hosts. Thus, in these species host discrimination must occur after landing and prior to sustained feeding. These studies were supported in part by the U.S.D.A.
