Genetic parameters of milk rennet coagulation time (RCT) and curd firmness (a30) among the first 3 lactations in Holstein cows were estimated. The data set included 39,960 test-day records from 5,216 Estonian Holstein cows (the progeny of 306 sires), which were recorded from April 2005 to May 2010 in 98 herds across the country. A multiple-lactation random regression animal model was used. Individual milk samples from each cow were collected during routine milk recording. These samples were analyzed for milk composition and coagulation traits with intervals of 2 to 3 mo in each lactation (7 to 305 DIM) and from first to third lactation. Mean heritabilities were 0.36, 0.32, and 0.28 for log-transformed RCT [ln(RCT)] and 0.47, 0.40, and 0.62 for a30 for parities 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Mean repeatabilities for ln(RCT) were 0.53, 0.55, and 0.56, but 0.59, 0.61, and 0.68 for a30 for parities 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Mean genetic correlations between ln(RCT) and a30 were −0.19, −0.14, and 0.02 for parities 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Mean genetic correlations were 0.91, 0.79, and 0.99 for ln(RCT), and 0.95, 0.94, and 0.94 for a30 between parities 1 and 2, 1 and 3, and 2 and 3, respectively. Due to these high genetic correlations, we concluded that for a proper genetic evaluation of milk coagulation properties it is sufficient to record RCT and a30 only in the first lactation.  相似文献

Genetic (co)variances between body condition score (BCS), body weight (BW), milk yield, and fertility were estimated using a random regression animal model extended to multivariate analysis. The data analyzed included 81,313 BCS observations, 91,937 BW observations, and 100,458 milk test-day yields from 8725 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows. A cubic random regression was sufficient to model the changing genetic variances for BCS, BW, and milk across different days in milk. The genetic correlations between BCS and fertility changed little over the lactation; genetic correlations between BCS and interval to first service and between BCS and pregnancy rate to first service varied from -0.47 to -0.31, and from 0.15 to 0.38, respectively. This suggests that maximum genetic gain in fertility from indirect selection on BCS should be based on measurements taken in midlactation when the genetic variance for BCS is largest. Selection for increased BW resulted in shorter intervals to first service, but more services and poorer pregnancy rates; genetic correlations between BW and pregnancy rate to first service varied from -0.52 to -0.45. Genetic selection for higher lactation milk yield alone through selection on increased milk yield in early lactation is likely to have a more deleterious effect on genetic merit for fertility than selection on higher milk yield in late lactation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test whether genetic components for body condition score (BCS) changed during lactation in first-parity Danish Holsteins. Data were extracted from the national conformation scoring system and consisted of 28,948 records from 3894 herds. Cows were scored once during lactation for BCS on a scale from 1 to 9 with increments of 1. The majority of records were made from d 30 to 150 of lactation. Mean BCS was 4.28 +/- 0.98. Body condition score was lowest in wk 8 to 10 from calving. A multivariate sire model with BCS recordings in six lactation stages treated as different traits was used to analyze the data. In addition, a random regression sire model was used to evaluate the changes in BCS as continuous functions of lactation stage. Estimates of heritability from the multivariate approach ranged from 0.14 to 0.29, and the estimated genetic correlations between BCS at different lactation stages were all higher than 0.82. The random regression model was based on Legendre polynomials (LP) specified on days in milk at scoring. To evaluate the change in mean BCS during lactation, the fixed part of the model included a fifth-order LP on the effect of days in milk at scoring. The highest order of fit used for the sire effect was a third-order LP, but based on likelihood ratio tests this could be reduced to a 0 order, i.e., a model with only the intercept term for the sire effect. This means that the genetic variation is constant over the investigated part of the lactation. Therefore, BCS can be considered the same trait during lactation, and a simple sire model can be used for prediction of breeding values.  相似文献

Body condition score (BCS) data were collected on 169,661 first-parity cows from herds participating in progeny testing schemes and linear type assessment. Genetic and residual variances for BCS estimated across time using a quadratic random regression model were found to be largest at the start of lactation. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.32 to 0.23 from d 1 to 200 of lactation, with a mean of 0.26. Genetic correlations between BCS and other traits were estimated using 2 approaches: 1) a multivariate analysis that included BCS and live weight, both adjusted for stage of lactation; 270-d cumulative yields of milk, fat, and protein; average somatic cell score; and 2 measures of fertility; and 2) a bivariate random regression analysis in which BCS was considered to be a longitudinal trait across time, with the same measurements as in approach 1 for all other traits. Genetic correlations of BCS with the 2 fertility traits were 0.43 and 0.50 using the multivariate analysis; the corresponding random regression estimates between BCS as a longitudinal trait across time and 2 measures of fertility were 0.35 to 0.44 and 0.40 to 0.49, and tended to increase with stage of lactation. Genetic correlations estimated using the random regression model fluctuated around the multivariate estimates for live weight and somatic cell score, which were 0.50 and −0.12, respectively. Genetic correlations estimated using the multivariate analysis of BCS with fat and protein yields were close to zero. With the random regression model, genetic correlations between BCS and fat and protein yields were positive at d 1 of lactation (0.16 and 0.08, respectively) and were negative by d 200 of lactation (−0.25 and −0.20, respectively). In pastoral production systems, such as those typical in New Zealand, there appears to be an advantage in the total lactation yields of fat and protein for cows of higher BCS in early lactation, which is likely to be because these cows have body reserves that are available to be mobilized in later lactation, when feed resources are sometimes limited.  相似文献

Legendre polynomial and cubic spline functions were used in random regression models to model the change in body traits over the course of the first lactation for daughters of 954 sires. Both functions estimated similar genetic variances for d 50 to 250 across lactation for the majority of traits. The heritability of the traits was similar to other studies using univariate models as well as random regression models. There was little difference between the 2 functions in their predictive power for each of the body type traits, as measured by the absolute difference between the predicted and actual type traits and the proportion of the total phenotypic variance explained by the model. Overall, the Legendre polynomial appeared to model these traits slightly better. Plots of the fixed curves and daily sire solutions obtained from the random regression models showed that there were differences in how the traits and sires changed across lactation. The daily sire solutions were then used to predict differences in liveweight of sires’ daughters across first lactation and showed that the daughters of some sires grew faster during first lactation than others. The spatial differences in the body traits that are displayed by this study could be an important indicator of the physical and biological changes that cows are undergoing in their first lactation. Information from these sire profiles could be harnessed to indicate production and functional traits later in life.  相似文献

Body condition score (BCS) records of primiparous Holstein cows were analyzed both as a single measure per animal and as repeated measures per sire of cow. The former resulted in a single, average, genetic evaluation for each sire, and the latter resulted in separate genetic evaluations per day of lactation. Repeated measure analysis yielded genetic correlations of less than unity between days of lactation, suggesting that BCS may not be the same trait across lactation. Differences between daily genetic evaluations on d 10 or 30 and subsequent daily evaluations were used to assess BCS change at different stages of lactation. Genetic evaluations for BCS level or change were used to estimate genetic correlations between BCS measures and fertility traits in order to assess the capacity of BCS to predict fertility. Genetic correlation estimates with calving interval and non-return rate were consistently higher for daily BCS than single measure BCS evaluations, but results were not always statistically different. Genetic correlations between BCS change and fertility traits were not significantly different from zero. The product of the accuracy of BCS evaluations with their genetic correlation with the UK fertility index, comprising calving interval and non-return rate, was consistently higher for daily than for single BCS evaluations, by 28 to 53%. This product is associated with the conceptual correlated response in fertility from BCS selection and was highest for early (d 10 to 75) evaluations.  相似文献

This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for body condition score (BCS), calving interval (CI), somatic cell score (SCS), yield, and linear type traits for the Italian Brown Swiss cattle population. A total of 32,359 records of first-parity lactating cows were collected from 2002 to 2004 in 4,885 dairy herds. The pedigree file included 96,661 animals. Multiple-trait animal models were analyzed using REML to estimate (co)variance components without repeated observations on traits. The estimated heritability was 0.15 for BCS, 0.05 for CI, and 0.06 for SCS, and ranged from 0.09 to 0.14 for test-day yield traits and from 0.07 to 0.32 for linear type traits. The genetic correlations of CI with yield and most linear type traits were positive, whereas the correlation between CI and BCS was negative (−0.35). For type traits, BCS showed, in general, a moderately negative genetic correlation except for strength, pastern, and heel height. The genetic correlation of CI or BCS with SCS was moderately low but favorable (0.19 and −0.26, respectively). The estimated correlations indicated that selection for greater yield and type traits can exert unfavorable effects on the reproductive ability of cows. To counterbalance these effects and to carry out early prediction of breeding values of bulls for fertility, inclusion of BCS in the breeding program is advisable.  相似文献

Genetic parameters of milk, fat, and protein yields were estimated in the first 3 lactations for registered Tunisian Holsteins. Data included 140,187; 97,404; and 62,221 test-day production records collected on 22,538; 15,257; and 9,722 first-, second-, and third-parity cows, respectively. Records were of cows calving from 1992 to 2004 in 96 herds. (Co)variance components were estimated by Bayesian methods and a 3-trait-3-lactation random regression model. Gibbs sampling was used to obtain posterior distributions. The model included herd × test date, age × season of calving × stage of lactation [classes of 25 days in milk (DIM)], production sector × stage of lactation (classes of 5 DIM) as fixed effects, and random regression coefficients for additive genetic, permanent environmental, and herd-year of calving effects, which were defined as modified constant, linear, and quadratic Legendre coefficients. Heritability estimates for 305-d milk, fat and protein yields were moderate (0.12 to 0.18) and in the same range of parameters estimated in management systems with low to medium production levels. Heritabilities of test-day milk and protein yields for selected DIM were higher in the middle than at the beginning or the end of lactation. Inversely, heritabilities of fat yield were high at the peripheries of lactation. Genetic correlations among 305-d yield traits ranged from 0.50 to 0.86. The largest genetic correlation was observed between the first and second lactation, potentially due to the limited expression of genetic potential of superior cows in later lactations. Results suggested a lack of adaptation under the local management and climatic conditions. Results should be useful to implement a BLUP evaluation for the Tunisian cow population; however, results also indicated that further research focused on data quality might be needed.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate the heritability of body condition score (BCS) with data that could be used to generate genetic evaluations for BCS in the US, and to estimate the relationship among BCS, dairy form and selected type traits. Body condition score and linear type trait records were obtained from Holstein Association USA Inc. Because BCS was a new trait for classifiers, scoring distribution and accuracy was not normal. Records from 11 of 29 classifiers were eliminated to generate a data set that should represent BCS data recorded in the future. Edited data included 128,478 records for analysis of first lactation cows and 207,149 records for analysis of all cows. Heritabilities and correlations were estimated with ASREML using sire models. Models included age at calving nested within lactation, 5th order polynomials of DIM, fixed herd-classification visit effects and random sire and error. Genetic correlation estimates were generated between first lactation data that had records from 11 classifiers removed and data with no classifiers removed. Genetic correlation estimates were 0.995 and above between data with and without classifiers removed for scoring distributions, but heritability estimates were higher with the classifiers edited from the data. Heritability estimates for type traits and final score were similar to previously reported estimates. The heritability estimate for BCS was 0.19 for first lactation cows and 0.22 for all cows. The genetic correlation estimate for first lactation cows between BCS and dairy form was -0.73, whereas the genetic correlation estimate between BCS and strength was 0.72. Genetic correlation estimates were nearly identical when cows from all lactations were included in the analyses. Body condition score had a genetic correlation with final score closer to zero (0.08) than correlations of final score with dairy form, stature or strength.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic relationship between body condition score (BCS) and calving traits (including calving ease and calf survival) for Ayrshire second-parity cows in Canada. The use of random regression models allowed assessment of the change of genetic correlation from 100 d before calving to 335 d after calving. Therefore, the influence of BCS in the dry period on subsequent calving could be studied. Body condition scores were collected by field staff several times over the lactation in 101 herds from Québec and calving records were extracted from the official database used for Canadian genetic evaluation of calving ease. Daily heritability of BCS increased from 0.07 on d 100 before calving to 0.25 at 335 d in milk. Genetic correlations between BCS at different stages ranged between 0.59 and 0.99 and indicated that genetic components for BCS did not change much over lactation. With the exception of the genetic correlation between BCS and direct calving ease, which was low and negative, genetic correlations between BCS and calving traits were positive and moderate to high. Correlations were the highest before calving and decreased toward the end of the ensuing lactation. The correlation between BCS 10 d before calving and maternal calving ease was 0.32 and emphasized the relationship between fat cows before calving with dystocia. Standards errors of the genetic correlations estimates were low. Genetic correlations between BCS and calf survival were moderate to high and favorable. This indicates that cows with a genetically high BCS across lactation would have a greater chance of producing a calf that survived (maternal calf survival) and that they would transmit genes that allow the calf to survive (direct calf survival).  相似文献

The objectives of the current study were to investigate the relationship between body condition score (BCS) and dairy form and changes in genetic parameters for BCS and dairy form within and across lactations and age. Body condition score and dairy form were obtained from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Records were edited to include those cows classified between 24 and 60 mo of age and between 0 and 335 d in milk (DIM). A minimum of 20 daughters per sire and 15 cows per herd-classification visit were required. The dataset consisted of 135,178 records from 119,215 cows. Repeatability, multiple trait, and random regression models were used to analyze the data. All models included fixed effects for herd-classification visit, age within lactations 1, 2, and 3 or higher, and 5th-order polynomials for DIM. Random effects included sire and permanent environment for all models. Random regression models included age at classification nested within sire or DIM and lactation number nested within sire. Genetic variance for both BCS and dairy form was lowest in early lactation and highest in midlactation. Genetic correlations within and across lactations were high. The genetic correlation between DIM 0 in lactation 1 and DIM 305 in lactation 3 was estimated to be 0.77 for BCS and 0.60 for dairy form. The genetic correlation estimate between 30 mo of age at classification and 50 mo of age at classification was 0.94 for both dairy form and BCS. The repeatability models appeared to generate accurate evaluations for BCS or dairy form at all ages and stages of lactation.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of production traits in the first 3 parities in Chinese Holsteins. Data were a random sample of complete herds (109,005 test-day records of 9,706 cows from 54 herds) extracted from the original data set, which included 362,304 test-day records of 30,942 Holstein cows from 105 herds. A test-day animal model with multiple-trait random regression and the Gibbs sampling method were used for parameter estimation. Regression curves were modeled using Legendre polynomials of order 4. The multiple-trait analysis included milk, fat, and protein yield, and somatic cell score (SCS). Average daily heritabilities ranged between 0.222 and 0.346 for the yield traits and between 0.092 and 0.187 for SCS. Heritabilities were higher in the third lactation for all traits. Within-parity genetic correlations were very high among the yield traits (>0.806) and were close to zero between SCS and yield traits, especially for first-parity cows. Results were similar to previous literature estimates from studies that used the same model as applied to this study. The estimates found in this study will be used to perform breeding value estimation for national genetic evaluations in Chinese Holsteins.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate variance components for test-day milk, fat, and protein yields and average daily SCS in 3 subsets of Italian Holsteins using a multiple-trait, multiple-lactation random regression test-day animal model and to determine whether a genetic heterogeneous variance adjustment was necessary. Data were test-day yields of milk, fat, and protein and SCS (on a log2 scale) from the first 3 lactations of Italian Holsteins collected from 1992 to 2002. The 3 subsets of data included 1) a random sample of Holsteins from all herds in Italy, 2) a random sample of Holsteins from herds using a minimum of 75% foreign sires, and 3) a random sample of Holsteins from herds using a maximum of 25% foreign sires. Estimations of variances and covariances for this model were achieved by Bayesian methods using the Gibbs sampler. Estimated 305-d genetic, permanent environmental, and residual variance was higher in herds using a minimum of 75% foreign sires compared with herds using a maximum of 25% foreign sires. Estimated average daily heritability of milk, fat, and protein yields did not differ among subsets. Heritability of SCS in the first lactation differed slightly among subsets and was estimated to be the highest in herds with a maximum of 25% foreign sire use (0.19 ± 0.01). Genetic correlations across lactations for milk, fat, and protein yields were similar among subsets. Genetic correlations across lactations for SCS were 0.03 to 0.08 higher in herds using a minimum of 75% or a maximum of 25% foreign sires, compared with herds randomly sampled from the entire population. Results indicate that adjustment for heterogeneous variance at the genetic level based on the percentage of foreign sire use should not be necessary with a multiple-trait random regression test-day animal model in Italy.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic relationship between body condition score (BCS) and reproduction traits for first-parity Canadian Ayrshire and Holstein cows. Body condition scores were collected by field staff several times over the lactation in herds from Québec, and reproduction records (including both fertility and calving traits) were extracted from the official database used for the Canadian genetic evaluation of those herds. For each breed, six 2-trait animal models were run; they included random regressions that allowed the estimation of genetic correlations between BCS over the lactation and reproduction traits that are measured as a single lactation record. Analyses were undertaken on data from 108 Ayrshire herds and 342 Holstein herds. Average daily heritabilities of BCS were close to 0.13 for both breeds; these relatively low estimates might be explained by the high variability among herds and BCS evaluators. Genetic correlations between BCS and interval fertility traits (days from calving to first service, days from first service to conception, and days open) were negative and ranged between −0.77 and −0.58 for Ayrshire and between −0.31 and −0.03 for Holstein. Genetic correlations between BCS and 56-d nonreturn rate at first insemination were positive and moderate. The trends of these genetic correlations over the lactation suggest that a genetically low BCS in early lactation would increase the number of days that the primiparous cow was not pregnant and would decrease the chances of the primiparous cow to conceive at first service. Genetic correlations between BCS and calving traits were generally the strongest at calving and decreased with increasing days in milk. The correlation between BCS at calving and maternal calving ease was 0.21 for Holstein and 0.31 for Ayrshire and emphasized the relationship between fat cows around calving and dystocia. Genetic correlations between calving traits and BCS during the subsequent lactation were moderate and favorable, indicating that primiparous cows with a genetically high BCS over the lactation would have a greater chance of producing a calf that survived (maternal calf survival) and would transmit the genes that allowed the calf to be born more easily (maternal calving ease) and to survive (direct calving ease).  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic and environmental parameters between body condition score (BCS) and 27 conformation and 3 production traits in Swiss Holstein cattle. The dataset consisted of 31,500 first-lactation cows, which were daughters of 545 sires in 1867 herds. Bivariate sire models with relationships among sires were used to estimate parameters. Least squares means for BCS by lactation stage show that cows lose BCS up to 5 mo after calving and gain BCS prior to the next calving. Regression models showed that an increase in age and percentage of Holstein genes results in an increase and decrease in BCS, respectively. Heritability (h2) was 0.24 for BCS score, which indicates good potential for selection. Sire estimated breeding values for BCS ranged from -0.46 to +0.51 units. Heritabilities ranged from 0.08 (heel depth) to 0.46 (rump width) for type traits and 0.23 to 0.29 for yield traits. Genetic correlations of BCS with 8 conformation traits were significant; stature (0.28), heart girth (0.21), strength (0.17), loin (-0.39), body capacity (0.19), dairy character (-0.35), udder quality (-0.42), and teat position rear (-0.33). Milk production and body condition have an unfavorable genetic correlation (-0.12 to -0.17). These results show that selection for good body condition, body conformation, and optimal milk production is possible and their genetic associations reported here will be useful for designing Swiss breeding goals.  相似文献

The dataset used in this analysis contained a total of 341,736 test-day observations of somatic cell scores from 77,110 primiparous daughters of 1965 Norwegian Cattle sires. Initial analyses, using simple random regression models without genetic effects, indicated that use of homogeneous residual variance was appropriate. Further analyses were carried out by use of a repeatability model and 12 random regression sire models. Legendre polynomials of varying order were used to model both permanent environmental and sire effects, as did the Wilmink function, the Lidauer-M?ntysaari function, and the Ali-Schaeffer function. For all these models, heritability estimates were lowest at the beginning (0.05 to 0.07) and higher at the end (0.09 to 0.12) of lactation. Genetic correlations between somatic cell scores early and late in lactation were moderate to high (0.38 to 0.71), whereas genetic correlations for adjacent DIM were near unity. Models were compared based on likelihood ratio tests, Bayesian information criterion, Akaike information criterion, residual variance, and predictive ability. Based on prediction of randomly excluded observations, models with 4 coefficients for permanent environmental effect were preferred over simpler models. More highly parameterized models did not substantially increase predictive ability. Evaluation of the different model selection criteria indicated that a reduced order of fit for sire effects was desireable. Models with zeroth- or first-order of fit for sire effects and higher order of fit for permanent environmental effects probably underestimated sire variance. The chosen model had Legendre polynomials with 3 coefficients for sire, and 4 coefficients for permanent environmental effects. For this model, trajectories of sire variance and heritability were similar assuming either homogeneous or heterogeneous residual variance structure.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prediction performance of the single-step genomic BLUP method using a multi-trait random regression model in genomic evaluation for milk production traits of Chinese Holsteins, and investigate how parameters w, τ, and ω used in the construction of the combined relationship matrix (H) affected prediction accuracy and bias. A total of 2.8 million test-day records from 0.2 million cows were available for milk, protein, and fat yields. Pedigree information included 0.3 million animals and 7,577 of them were genotyped with medium-density single nucleotide polymorphism marker panels. Genotypes were imputed into Geneseek Genomic Profiler HD (GeneSeek, Lincoln, NE) including 77K markers. A reduced data set for evaluating models was extracted from the full data set by removing test-day records from the last 4 yr. Bull and cow validation populations were constructed for each trait. We evaluated the prediction performance of the multiple-trait multiple-lactation random regression single-step genomic BLUP (RR-ssGBLUP) models with different values of parameters w, τ, and ω in the H matrix, taking consideration of inbreeding. We compared RR-ssGBLUP with the multiple-trait multiple-lactation random regression model based on pedigree and genomic BLUP. De-regressed proofs for 305-d milk, protein, and fat yields averaged over 3 lactations, which were calculated from the full data set, were used for posteriori validations. The results showed that RR-ssGBLUP was feasible for implementation in breeding practice, and its prediction performance was superior to the other 2 methods in the comparison, including prediction accuracy and unbiasedness. For bulls, RR-ssGBLUP models with w0.05τ2.0ω1.0,w0.05τ2.5ω1.0, and w0.1τ1.6ω0.4 achieved the best performance for milk, protein, and fat yields, respectively. For cows, the RR-ssGBLUP with w0.2τ1.6ω0.4 performed the best for all 3 traits. The H matrix constructed with larger τ and smaller ω gave better convergence in solving mixed model equations. Among different RR-ssGBLUP models, the differences in validation accuracy were small. However, the regression coefficient indicating prediction bias varied substantially. The increase of w and τ, and decrease of ω, led to an increase in the regression coefficient. The results demonstrated RR-ssGBLUP is a good alternative to the multi-step approach, but the optimal choice of parameters should be found via preliminary validation study to achieve the best performance.  相似文献

Body condition score (BCS) is strongly correlated with energy reserves. The ease, rapidity of scoring, and high intra- and inter-observer repeatability make it a widely used herd management tool in bovine practice and in scientific studies. Loss or gain of BCS, rather than a single BCS measurement, is frequently used to monitor energy balance in dairy cows. It is unknown if the difference between 2 BCS measures taken at different moments (ΔBCS) would demonstrate inter-observer agreement similar to that of a single BCS measurement. The objective of this study was to compare inter-observer agreement of BCS and ΔBCS in dairy cows when multiple observers perform data collection. An observational study was conducted between April and September 2015; 3 observers independently assessed BCS of 73 Holstein cows from 1 commercial dairy herd. Body condition score assessments of the animals were performed between 1 and 20 d in milk (early lactation; exam 1) and again between 41 and 60 d in milk (peak of milk production; exam 2). Quadratic weighted kappa (κw) was computed to quantify agreement between observers for single BCS measurements and ΔBCS. For single BCS measurements, κw of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.85) and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.77, 0.89) were obtained for exam 1 and exam 2, respectively. Such values would be interpreted as strong agreement and are consistent with the available literature on BCS repeatability. When computing agreement for ΔBCS, a κw value of 0.49 (95% CI: 0.32, 0.63) was obtained, suggesting moderate agreement between observers. These findings suggest that studies investigating single BCS measures could use many observers with a high degree of accuracy in the results. When ΔBCS is the parameter of interest, more reliable results would be obtained if one observer conducts all assessments.  相似文献

The objectives of this research were to estimate genetic parameters for body condition score (BCS) and locomotion (LOC), and to assess their relationships with angularity (ANG), milk yield, fat and protein content, and fat to protein content ratio (F:P) in the Italian Holstein Friesian breed. The Italian Holstein Friesian Cattle Breeders Association collects type trait data once on all registered first lactation cows. Body condition score and LOC were introduced in the conformation scoring system in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Variance (and covariance) components among traits were estimated with a Bayesian approach via a Gibbs sampling algorithm and an animal model. Heritability estimates were 0.114 and 0.049 for BCS and LOC, respectively. The genetic correlation between BCS and LOC was weak (−0.084) and not different from zero; therefore, the traits seem to be genetically independent, but further investigation on possible departures from linearity of this relationship is needed. Angularity was strongly negatively correlated with BCS (−0.612), and strongly positively correlated with LOC (0.650). The genetic relationship of milk yield with BCS was moderately negative (−0.386), and was moderately positive (0.238) with LOC. These results indicate that high-producing cows tend to be thinner and tend to have better locomotion than low-producing cows. The genetic correlation of BCS with fat content (0.094) and F:P (−0.014) was very weak and not different from zero, and with protein content (0.173) was weak but different from zero. Locomotion was weakly correlated with fat content (0.071), protein content (0.028), and F:P (0.074), and correlations were not different from zero. Phenotypic correlations were generally weaker than their genetic counterparts, ranging from −0.241 (BCS with ANG) to 0.245 (LOC with ANG). Before including BCS and LOC in the selection index of the Italian Holstein breed, the correlations with other traits currently used to improve type and functionality of animals need to be investigated.  相似文献

The skin has many important roles in dairy cattle, and skinfold thickness could be used as an indicator of body fat deposition. The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters of skinfold thickness and to explore its association with body condition score (BCS) and milk production traits in a Chinese Holstein population. Skinfold thicknesses over the neck (STN) and the last rib (STR), BCS, and test-day records of milk production traits were available for 6,416 lactating Holstein cows in the summers of 2015 and 2016 in Beijing, China. Multi-trait animal models were used to estimate variance and covariance components using the DMU software. The average STN was 7.15 ± 1.28 mm, and the average STR was 11.76 ± 1.95 mm (mean ± standard deviation). Estimated heritability was 0.13 ± 0.03 for STN and 0.26 ± 0.04 for STR. We detected a high genetic correlation (0.79 ± 0.08; heritability ± standard error) between STN and STR. Genetic correlations between skinfold thickness and BCS were low to moderate: 0.18 between STR and BCS, and 0.33 between STN and BCS. Genetic correlations between skinfold thickness and milk yield, milk fat percentage, and milk protein percentage were negligible, ranging from ?0.02 to 0.15. Collectively, skinfold thickness is characterized as a trait with moderate heritability. Skinfold thickness is sensitive to changes in body condition or fat deposition across parities and lactation stages in milking cows, and we confirmed the complementary nature of skinfold thickness and BCS genetically as well as phenotypically by comparing their changing trends throughout lactation and across lactations. The use of skinfold thickness, together with BCS, can assist in the monitoring of changes in body fat deposition to achieve higher management precision.  相似文献
