The objectives of this study were to examine the behavioral effects of providing limit-fed dairy heifers an increased amount of feed bunk space compared with recommended feed bunk allowance, and to determine if the effects of provision of extra bunk space would be comparable to those seen when limit-fed heifers are provided a low-nutritive feedstuff. Twelve Holstein dairy heifers (381.1 ± 44.8 d of age, 417.3 ± 47.9 kg), divided into groups of 4, were exposed to each of 3 treatments using a 3 × 3 Latin square design with 7-d periods. The treatments were (1) 0.68 m of feed bunk space/heifer (TMR-0.68), (2) 0.34 m of feed bunk space/heifer (TMR-0.34), and (3) 0.34 m of feed bunk space/heifer with an additional 0.34 m of feed bunk space available for free-choice straw (TMR-S). The total mixed ration was fed once daily at a restricted level (1.83% of body weight) and contained (dry matter basis) 19.9% alfalfa/grass haylage, 20.1% corn silage, 49.6% high-moisture corn, and 10.4% protein supplement. Group dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded daily. Behavior at the feed bunk was recorded for the last 4 d of each treatment period. Due to the provision of straw, DMI was highest on the TMR-S treatment compared with the other treatments (9.4 vs. 7.8 kg/d). Heifers spent the most time feeding when on the TMR-S treatment (147.7 min/d), with no difference in feeding time between the limit-fed TMR treatments (64.5 min/d). Within the TMR-S treatment, feeding time on the straw was 76.9 min/d; thus, the rate of consumption of only the TMR was similar across all treatments. Unrewarded time at the feed bunk (when no feed was present) did not differ between treatments. Heifers did not differ in competitive behavior when on the limit-fed TMR treatments (13.1 displacements/heifer per day). However, while on the TMR-S treatment, heifers displaced each other more frequently (23.8 displacements/heifer per day) than while on the other 2 treatments. Overall, results suggest that neither increased feed bunk space nor provision of straw will reduce competition for, or slow consumption rates of, a limit-fed TMR. The provision of straw alongside a limit-fed TMR did increase DMI, which would contribute to further rumen fill, and allowed heifers to increase their time spent feeding throughout the day.  相似文献

Four dairy farms were used to determine the effects of water addition to diets and sample collection location on the particle size distribution and chemical composition of total mixed rations (TMR). Samples were collected weekly from the mixing wagon and from 3 locations in the feed bunk (top, middle, and bottom) for 5 mo (April, May, July, August, and October). Samples were partially dried to determine the effect of moisture on particle size distribution. Particle size distribution was measured using the Penn State Particle Size Separator. Crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber contents were also analyzed. Particle fractions 19 to 8, 8 to 1.18, and <1.18 mm were judged adequate in all TMR for rumen function and milk yield; however, the percentage of material >19 mm was greater than recommended for TMR, according to the guidelines of Cooperative Extension of Pennsylvania State University. The particle size distribution in April differed from that in October, but intermediate months (May, July, and August) had similar particle size distributions. Samples from the bottom of the feed bunk had the highest percentage of particles retained on the 19-mm sieve. Samples from the top and middle of the feed bunk were similar to that from the mixing wagon. Higher percentages of particles were retained on >19, 19 to 8, and 8 to 1.18 mm sieves for wet than dried samples. The reverse was found for particles passing the 1.18-mm sieve. Mean particle size was higher for wet than dried samples. The crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber contents of TMR varied with month of sampling (18-21, 40-57, and 21-34%, respectively) but were within recommended ranges for high-yielding dairy cows. Analyses of TMR particle size distributions are useful for proper feed bunk management and formulation of diets that maintain rumen function and maximize milk production and quality. Water addition may help reduce dust associated with feeding TMR.  相似文献

Many dairy cows succumb to disease after calving. Disease risk may be affected by the cows' social environment and ability to perform maternal behaviors. In nature, cattle isolate from others and find seclusion to give birth; these behaviors may be limited in indoor group pens and could potentially affect the cows' ability to cope. The aim was to determine whether stocking density and a physical blind in prepartum bedded-pack group pens affected physiological biomarkers, disease risk, and hygiene of peripartum dairy cows. A randomized complete block designed with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used. Approximately 3 wk before calving, 374 cows (primiparous = 127; multiparous = 247) were assigned randomly to 1 of 4 treatment pens with the following 2 factors: (1) high versus low stocking density (7.7 to 12.9 m2 vs. 15.4 to 25.8 m2 lying space per cow), and (2) presence or absence of a blind. The blind was created using plastic road barriers and plywood, a steel gate, and shade cloth. After calving, cows were moved into a freestall pen and milked 3 times per day. Blood was sampled on the day of enrollment (baseline; ?24 d) and approximately ?14, ?7, 3, 7, 10, and 14 d relative to calving, to measure inflammatory (haptoglobin) and metabolic (nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate) biomarkers. β-Hydroxybutyrate (≥1.2 mmol/L) was used to diagnose subclinical ketosis. Vaginal discharge was scored 3, 7, 10, and 14 d after calving, to diagnose metritis (none, mild, or severe). Hygiene was scored on ?24, ?14, and ?7 d before calving. Before calving, haptoglobin was lower in pens with a blind. After calving, cows in pens with low stocking density before calving tended to be at greater odds of being diagnosed with metritis. Cows were more likely to have poorer hygiene scores in high stocking density pens. No treatment effects were detected for pre- and postpartum nonesterified fatty acids, β-hydroxybutyrate, postpartum haptoglobin, or subclinical ketosis. Results suggest that the provision of a blind and lower stocking density may be beneficial for reducing inflammation before calving. However, low prepartum stocking density might increase the odds of metritis after calving. Although the reason for this paradox is unclear, the effects of prepartum stocking density may require further exploration.  相似文献

Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of pen-stocking density and straw processing on the growth performance, feed-bunk sorting behaviors, and hygiene of Holstein dairy heifers. Two corn silage-alfalfa haylage diets diluted with wheat straw were offered; diet composition was identical, except that one diet contained short (well-processed) straw (SS; 46.0% neutral detergent fiber, 12.9% crude protein, 60.7% total digestible nutrients, TDN), and the other long (poorly processed) straw (LS; 46.5% neutral detergent fiber, 12.6% crude protein, 60.0% TDN; % of dry matter basis). A 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of straw-processing (SS or LS) and pen-stocking-density [100, 125, or 150% of capacity] treatments was evaluated with 240 Holstein dairy heifers (410 ± 56.3 kg) that were blocked by weight, and then assigned to 24 pens with 4 pens/interactive treatment. For 91 d, diets were dispersed at 1100 h daily, and bunks were sampled subsequently at 1300, 1600, 1900, 2200, 0100, and 0600 h during 3 evaluation periods throughout the trial. Diets were offered for ad libitum intake, but with minimal orts (<3%); as such, particle-size concentration factors were calculated as bunk concentration/initial concentration. For the LS diet, particle-size concentration factors for large (>19 mm) particles increased linearly from 1.26 to 2.82 across sampling times, differing from the SS diet at 2200, 0100, 0600, and 0900 h (orts). Similar factors calculated for the SS diet also increased linearly across sampling times, but these responses were less severe (1.27 to 1.97). Overall, particle-size concentration factors for physically effective fiber exhibited responses similar to those observed for large particles, except they were limited to narrower ranges for both the SS (1.04 to 1.14) and LS (1.03 to 1.26) diets. Despite these differences, daily dry matter intake was not affected by treatment (mean = 9.65 kg of dry matter/d), nor was daily intake of TDN (mean = 5.92 kg of TDN/d). For SS, heifers housed within overstocked pens exhibited reduced average daily gain (ADG) compared with the 100% stocking rate (0.93 vs. 0.99 kg/d). With LS processing, ADG differed between the 125 and 150% stocking rates (0.96 vs. 0.88 kg/d), as did the within-pen coefficient of variation for ADG (10.7 vs. 18.6%). Hygiene scores (1 = clean, 4 = caked-on manure) for legs (range = 2.1 to 2.3) and flanks (range = 1.6 to 1.9) indicated heifers stayed acceptably clean, but the within-pen coefficient of variation for legs (14.4 vs. 9.0%) and flanks (34.2 vs. 23.8%) was greater for overstocked pens compared with the 100% stocking density, thereby suggesting hygiene scores were more variable without a free stall for each heifer.  相似文献

A study was conducted on 4 dairy farms in the Cannonsville Reservoir Basin (Delaware County, NY) to identify feeding strategies in commercial dairy herds that will reduce manure phosphorus and mass farm phosphorus balance. Lactating cow diets on all 4 farms were evaluated monthly for 28 mo using the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System. Milk production and herd reproductive performance were measured monthly. Manure phosphorus content was measured every 6 mo. Reduced phosphorus diets (precision feeding) were implemented in 2 of the herds. Mean herd phosphorus intakes in the 4 herds ranged from 107 to 165% of requirement. Dietary phosphorus intakes in the 2 herds where diets were modified were reduced from 153% of requirement to 111%, an average reduction of 25%. Predicted phosphorus intakes and manure excretions were reduced 11.8 kg/yr per cow. After dietary adjustments in the 2 herds, fecal phosphorus concentrations decreased 33%. Milk production was not adversely affected by reduced phosphorus diets. Whole farm mass phosphorus balances (amount of phosphorus remaining on the farm) on the 2 farms were reduced 49%, with the percentage of imported phosphorus remaining on the farm reduced to less than 45%. Achieving feed phosphorus reductions similar to those of this study on all of the estimated 7000 to 8000 mature dairy cattle in the Cannonsville Basin could reduce feed phosphorus imports and manure phosphorus excretions more than 64,000 kg/yr. This would slow the rate of phosphorus accumulation in agricultural soils in the Cannonsville Basin, which over time could reduce the 50,000 kg/yr average total phosphorus loading of the Cannonsville Reservoir.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to develop and validate a computerized system to monitor feeding behavior and feed intake of loose-housed dairy cattle. The system consisted of 28 scales located in front of each self-locking place of a regular feedbunk. All cows had access to all scales indifferently. Each visit to the feedbunk was monitored by a transponder in the ear of each cow that was detected by a proximity reader located at the top right corner of each headlock. The data from the scales and the proximity readers were continuously recorded by a computer with an average scanning time of 3.5 s. The monitoring system was validated using all 28 feeding places and 51 lactating cows in a series of 4-h observations during 5 different d. During the observation periods, for each feeder, 2 observers recorded the cow number and the exact time of the visit. The observed data were then compared with the computer records. To validate the ability of the system to monitor feed consumption, on separate days, the amount of feed consumed by a cow during a visit was also measured manually with an external scale, and the feed that disappeared from each scale in 2 different 24-h periods was compared with the sum of feed consumed in each scale during these 2 periods. The average time spent in a given scale by each cow determined by direct observations was similar to that determined by the computer. The system was accurate and showed a high specificity (98.8%) and sensitivity (99.6%) for cow detections. Feed weights determined by the computer system were similar to those measured manually with an external scale, implying that the system was also accurate in measuring individual intake weights. In conclusion, the system provided a reasonable estimate of the number of visits per animal, length of each visit, amount of feed consumed per visit and animal, the total amount of feed consumed daily by each animal, and the rate at which animals consume feed.  相似文献

Individualized, precision feeding of dairy cattle may contribute to profitable and sustainable dairy production. Feeding strategies targeted at optimizing efficiency of individual cows, rather than groups of animals with similar characteristics, is a logical goal of individualized precision feeding. However, algorithms designed to make feeding recommendations for specific animals are scarce. The objective of this study was to develop and test 2 algorithms designed to improve feed efficiency of individual cows by supplementing total mixed rations (TMR) with varying types and amounts of top-dressed feedstuffs. Twenty-four Holstein dairy cows were assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups as follows: a control group fed a common TMR ad libitum, a group fed individually according to algorithm 1, and a group fed individually according to algorithm 2. Algorithm 1 used a mixed-model approach with feed efficiency as the response variable and automated measurements of production parameters and top-dress type as dependent variables. Cow was treated as a random effect, and cow by top-dress interactions were included if significant. Algorithm 2 grouped cows based on top-dress response efficiency structure using a principal components and k-means clustering. Both algorithms were trained over a 36-d experimental period immediately before testing, and were updated weekly during the 35-d testing period. Production performance responses for dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, milk fat percentage and yield, milk protein percentage and yield, and feed efficiency were analyzed using a mixed-effects model with fixed effects for feeding algorithm, top dress, week, and the 2- and 3-way interactions among these variables. Milk protein percentage and feed efficiency were significantly affected by the 3-way interaction of top dress, algorithm, and week, and DMI tended to be affected by this 3-way interaction. Feeding algorithm did not affect milk yield, milk fat yield, or milk protein yield. However, feeding costs were reduced, and hence milk revenue increased on the algorithm-fed cows. The efficacy of feeding algorithms differed by top dress and time, and largely relied on DMI shifts to modulate feed efficiency. The net result, for the cumulative feeding groups, was that cows in the algorithm 1 and 2 groups earned over $0.45 and $0.70 more per head per day in comparison to cows on the TMR control, respectively. This study yielded 2 candidate approaches for efficiency-focused, individualized feeding recommendations. Refinement of algorithm selection, development, and training approaches are needed to maximize production parameters through individualized feeding.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate how meal patterns of recently weaned and group-housed dairy calves are subject to effects of previous dietary experience and associated with competition for feed. During the preweaning period, Holstein heifer and bull calves were provided diets differing in provision and presentation of forage as follows: (1) pelleted starter only (n = 12), (2) starter and chopped coastal bermudagrass provided in separate buckets (n = 13), (3) starter and chopped coastal bermudagrass mixed together in the same bucket (n = 15), or (4) starter, chopped coastal bermudagrass, and liquid molasses mixed together in 1 bucket (n = 13). At 58 ± 2 (mean ± standard deviation) days of age, following weaning, calves were mingled between treatments and moved into group housing in weekly age-based cohorts (7 ± 2 calves/group; 8 groups total), and all were provided the mixed diet (without molasses). Within group pens, calves were fed individually using the Calan Broadbent feeding system (American Calan Inc.). Calves were monitored for 1 wk following introduction to the group pen. Feed intake was measured daily. Behavioral data, describing feeding times and competition for feed, were recorded continuously for 48 h beginning after a 5-d adaptation to the group pen. Calves previously provided starter only had longer, less frequent meals than calves previously provided forage in any form, and they tended to consume less feed compared with those previously provided starter and hay separately, with calves previously provided mixed diets having intermediate intakes. We observed occurrences of displacements at bins, which were followed by replacements and feed stealing on some occasions, where 34% of calves consumed feed from a bin assigned to another calf on at least 1 occurrence, and 64% of calves were stolen from at least once. Competition at feed bins was not affected by previous dietary treatments, but was associated with meal patterns. Actor displacement rate was negatively associated with meal frequency and duration, but calves that were displaced more often were those that spent more time feeding. These results suggested a possible carryover effect of previous exposure to forage on postweaning meal patterns following a dietary change. Further, we found that competitive behavior varied considerably between individuals, occurring frequently despite feeding calves using individually-assigned feeding bins, and was associated with meal characteristics. These results highlighted the importance of considering both previous dietary experience and social factors when evaluating feeding behavior.  相似文献

Various forms of overcrowding are common in heifer-rearing operations. Our objectives for this study were to evaluate the effects of overstocking at the feedbunk (100, 133, 160, or 200% of capacity) on the growth performance, feedbunk sorting behaviors, and hygiene of 128 gravid Holstein heifers (475 ± 55.3 kg) consuming an alfalfa haylage and corn silage diet diluted with processed wheat straw at an inclusion rate of 25.2% (DM basis). In this study, heifers were overstocked only at the feedbunk, and not with respect to available freestalls or pen area. Heifers were blocked by weight, and subsequently assigned to 1 of 16 identical research pens. A total mixed ration was distributed at 1000 h daily for 91 d via a drive-through feed alley, with heifers allowed access to the feedbunk through head-locking feeding gates. Mean weights for the 4 blocks (32 heifers/block) were 406 ± 14.9, 453 ± 15.3, 493 ± 17.6, and 548 ± 21.9 kg. Generally, nutrient intakes were not affected by stocking rate at the feedbunk; mean intakes of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, and total digestible nutrients across all feedbunk stocking rates were 10.63, 5.19, and 6.29 kg/d, respectively. Overall, the effects of competition at the feedbunk on heifer growth performance were minor, with a collective average daily gain of 1.02 kg/d across all treatments. Only trends for linear increases in total weight gain and BCS were observed with overstocking at the feedbunk. Collectively, overstocked rates also exhibited a trend for better feed-to-gain ratio than pens stocked at 100% of feedbunk capacity (10.3 vs. 11.0 kg:kg). We observed solid evidence that heifers collectively sorted against large (>19 mm) particles, and also exhibited preference for short (>1.18 and <8 mm) and fine (<1.18 mm) feed particles; however, these responses were not affected by feedbunk stocking rate. Additionally, heifers sorted against neutral detergent fiber as the concentration of neutral detergent fiber remaining in the feedbunk increased during the 24-h period following feeding; conversely, they preferred crude protein, as indicated by a decreasing concentration of this nutrient over time. Heifer hygiene was not affected by competition at the feedbunk. Under the experimental conditions established for this trial, overstocking at the feedbunk did not affect heifer growth performance, but it should not be practiced blindly without attention to other critical components of animal welfare.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to assess if cows preferred pasture or indoor housing, and how diurnal and environmental factors affected this preference. Lactating dairy cows (n = 5 groups, each containing 5 cows) were sequentially housed either in a free-stall barn on pasture, or given the choice between the 2 environments. Each group was tested 3 times under each condition, for a total of 21 d, to assess the effects of varying climatic conditions (outdoor temperature ranged from 9.9 to 28.2°C and daily rainfall from 0 to 65 mm/d over the course of the experiment). When provided the choice, cows spent on average (± SD) 13.0 ± 0.6 h/d on pasture, mainly at night. The time cows spent on pasture during the day decreased with the temperature-humidity index (R2 = 0.55); time on pasture at night decreased with rainfall (R2 = 0.12). When provided a choice, cows spent more of their lying time on pasture (69.4 ± 0.02% of the total lying time/d) than indoors in the free-stalls. Cows also spent more time in total lying down when provided a choice than when confined to pasture [0.6 h/d more lying time; standard error of the difference (SED) = 0.21 h/d] and spent even more time lying down when confined indoors (1.1 h/d more time; SED = 0.21 h/d). Cows used the indoor housing especially for feeding; feeder use peaked when cows returned from morning and afternoon milkings. However, cows with free access to pasture spent 1.0 h/d (SED = 0.09 h/d) less time eating the TMR available indoors, resulting in a decline in intake of 2.9 kg of dry matter/d (SED = 0.36 kg of dry matter/d). How cows used the indoor housing differed when cows were provided a choice; for example, cows spent a greater percentage of their time indoors at the feed alley both during the day (47% of the total time spent indoors, versus 41% for cows confined indoors, SED = 0.02%) and at night (22 vs. 5%, SED = 0.04%). In conclusion, under the housing and environmental conditions tested, cows showed a strong preference for access to pasture at night and for access to indoor housing during the day when temperature and humidity increased.  相似文献

Most free-stall housing systems in the Netherlands are equipped with slatted or solid concrete floors with manure scrapers. A slipping incident occurs when the required coefficient of friction (RCOF) exceeds the coefficient of friction (COF) at the claw-floor interface. An experiment was conducted to measure ground reaction forces (GRF) of dairy cows (n = 9) performing various locomotory behaviors on a nonslippery rubber-covered concrete floor. The RCOF was determined as the ratio of the horizontal and vertical components of the GRF. It was shown that during straight walking and walking-a-curve, the RCOF reached values up to the COF, whereas for sudden stop-and-start responses, the RCOF reached values beyond the maximum COF that concrete floors can provide. Our results indicate that concrete floors do not provide enough friction to allow natural locomotory behavior and suggest that tractional properties of floors should be main design criteria in the development of better flooring surfaces for cattle.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine how competition for feed influences the feeding behavior of young, growing dairy heifers. Thirty-six prepubertal Holstein heifers (231.5 ± 12.1 d old, weighing 234.7 ± 24.0 kg), consuming a total mixed ration ad libitum, were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: noncompetitive (1 heifer/feed bin), or competitive (2 heifers/feed bin). After 7 d of treatment adaptation, dry matter intake and feeding behavior were monitored for 7 d for each animal. Fresh feed and orts were sampled on the last 3 d of the treatment period from each bin and were subjected to particle size analysis. The particle size separator consisted of 3 screens (18, 9, and 1.18 mm) and a bottom pan resulting in 4 fractions (long, medium, short, and fine). Sorting activity for each fraction was calculated as the actual intake expressed as a percentage of the predicted intake. There was no difference in sorting behavior or dry matter intake between the treatments. Overall, the heifers sorted against long particles (94%), and sorted for medium (102%) and short (103%) particles. The competitively fed heifers tended to have 10% shorter feeding times, particularly at peak feeding periods. The competitively fed heifers also consumed 9% fewer meals per day, although the duration of these meals were 10% longer, and tended to be 13% larger. Competition for feed also tended to increase the day-to-day variation in feeding time, meal duration, and meal size. It can be concluded that competition for feed for growing dairy heifers alters feeding patterns, reduces access to feed, particularly during periods of peak feeding activity, and tends to increase day-to-day variation in feeding behavior.  相似文献

During the preparation of cooked foods acrylamide is formed from asparagine and reducing sugars at high temperatures. By-products of oil, starch and sugar production, which may be found in animal feed, partially result from processing steps using heat treatment that are similarly likely to form acrylamide. Possibly, pelletizing during the processing of mixed concentrates may also be involved in acrylamide formation. Thus the occurrence of acrylamide in animal feed and the potential for carry-over into animal products should be tested. Independently of the feed matrix, 1.5 g per day of acrylamide was fed to a cow for ten days resulting in a mean concentration of 175 µg/kg of acrylamide in the milk. From the data obtained the mean carry-over was found to be 0.24%, and a mean half-life time of 2.8 h was estimated. This means acrylamide was rapidly transformed in the cow. The acrylamide concentrations in three commercial mixed concentrates were respectively 180, 145 and 140 µg/kg feed. To test the possible effect of pelletizing, the peripheral zones were separately analysed. No difference in concentration was observed. Based on the carry-over rate estimated in this study, a maximum concentration of approx. 0.2 µg/kg of acrylamide would be expected in milk from cows fed with such feeds.  相似文献

There is increased interest in automated methods for lameness detection, such as measures of weight distribution. Still, practical use of such methods depends on knowing the conditions that affect how cows distribute their weight. In 3 experiments, 10, 18, and 12 Holstein cows were trained to stand on a platform that measured the weight placed on each of their legs. The objectives were to evaluate how cows change their weight distribution after milking, after calving, and when standing with the front legs elevated and to evaluate the effect of the udder fill and fetus weight on the gait score. Comparisons before and after milking and before and after calving showed that the weight of milk was carried mainly on the back legs, whereas the weight of the fetus was distributed between front (52%) and back legs (48%). The percentage of weight distributed between front and back legs was not affected by elevation of the front legs. Weight shifting between contralateral legs was greater before calving than after; the weight variability over time decreased by 30% after calving. A full udder increased gait score by 0.3 ± 0.1 and particularly abduction/adduction of the back legs (increased by 83%). Gait score did not change after calving, although the back arch increased by 25%. Therefore, time since milking and state of late pregnancy need consideration when using gait score and measures of weight distribution to detect lameness.  相似文献

The Welfare Quality (WQ) protocol for on-farm dairy cattle welfare assessment describes 27 measures and a stepwise method for integrating values for these measures into 11 criteria scores, grouped further into 4 principle scores and finally into an overall welfare categorization with 4 levels. We conducted an online survey to examine whether trained users' opinions of the WQ protocol for dairy cattle correspond with the integrated scores (criteria, principles, and overall categorization) calculated according to the WQ protocol. First, the trained users' scores (n = 8–15) for reliability and validity and their ranking of the importance of all measures for herd welfare were compared with the degree of actual effect of these measures on the WQ integrated scores. Logistic regression was applied to identify the measures that affected the WQ overall welfare categorization into the “not classified” or “enhanced” categories for a database of 491 European herds. The smallest multivariate model maintaining the highest percentage of both sensitivity and specificity for the “enhanced” category contained 6 measures, whereas the model for “not classified” contained 4 measures. Some of the measures that were ranked as least important by trained users (e.g., measures relating to drinkers) had the highest influence on the WQ overall welfare categorization. Conversely, measures rated as most important by the trained users (e.g., lameness and mortality) had a lower effect on the WQ overall category. In addition, trained users were asked to allocate criterion and overall welfare scores to 7 focal herds selected from the database (n = 491 herds). Data on all WQ measures for these focal herds relative to all other herds in the database were provided. The degree to which expert scores corresponded to each other, the systematic difference, and the correspondence between median trained-user opinion and the WQ criterion scores were then tested. The level of correspondence between expert scoring and WQ scoring for 6 of the 12 criteria and for the overall welfare score was low. The WQ scores of the protocol for dairy cattle thus lacked correspondence with trained users on the importance of several welfare measures.  相似文献

Partial budgeting was used to compare income over feed costs of high-yielding Holstein cows based on data from an experiment with 4 dietary treatments arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial. The factors were low (25 kg DM/cow per day) and high (40 kg DM/cow per day) pasture allowance (PA) and supplemental grain fed at 1 kg/4 kg of milk or no supplemental grain fed. The 4 treatments were low PA unsupplemented (LPAU), low PA concentrate supplementation (LPAC), high PA unsupplemented (HPAU), and high PA concentrate supplementation (HPAC). Two management systems were modeled. The first, a fixed herd size flexible rotation length model, and the second, a flexible herd size model where rotation length was fixed. The LPAC treatment yielded the highest income over feed costs, followed by the HPAC treatment. The treatment generating the lowest income was the HPAU system. The low PA systems generated more income than did the high PA systems for equivalent supplemental feeding strategies. The results also showed that feeding supplemental grain increased the income-over-feed costs compared with systems that did not feed supplemental grain. In most treatments, comparing the fixed herd against the flexible herd models, the flexible herd size model generated higher income due to the substitution of relatively low income per hectare of hay production for higher income from milk production. There were also differences in feed conversion efficiencies for milk production due to concentrate supplementation (1.04 unsupplemented vs. 1.21 supplemented), but PA did not affect the efficiency of milk production. Neither supplementation nor PA affected the feed conversion efficiency of milk fat yield. However, the efficiency of milk protein yield was affected by concentrate supplementation (0.028 unsupplemented vs. 0.034 supplemented) but not by pasture allowance.  相似文献

In 2 experiments we assessed how preferences, time budgets, and feeding behavior of dairy cows change in response to flooring surfaces in front of the feed bunk. In Experiment 1, 12 nonlactating dairy cattle were individually housed with access to 2 standing platforms filled with either concrete or sawdust. In Experiment 2, 24 nonlactating dairy cattle were given access to either concrete or Animat rubber flooring in front of the feed bunk. In Experiment 1, cows preferred the sawdust to the concrete flooring. In both experiments, cows provided with a softer floor in front of the feed bunk spent more time standing near the feed bunk without eating (Experiment 1: 67 vs. 40 min/d on sawdust vs. concrete, respectively, SEM = 5.6 min/d; Experiment 2: 176 vs. 115 min/d on Animat vs. concrete, respectively, SEM = 20.5 min/d) compared with when they were kept on concrete. The increased time spent at the feed bunk was due to a combination of more frequent eating and standing bouts, indicating that cows were more willing to move on nonconcrete flooring. Total time spent eating was significantly greater on the softer floor in Experiment 2, but not in Experiment 1 (Exp. 1: 289 vs. 275 min/d on sawdust and concrete, respectively, SEM = 7.3 min/d; Exp. 2: 330 vs. 289 min/d on Animat and concrete, respectively, SEM = 15.4), although feed intake was increased on the sawdust treatment in Experiment 1. Cows spent significantly more time lying in the feed alley when the flooring was rubber (219 vs. 53 min/d on Animat and concrete, SEM = 53.6 min/d), perhaps because the lying area in Experiment 2 was inadequate. In conclusion, cows prefer to stand on softer flooring in front of the feed bunk, and are more willing to move on and spend more time standing in front of the feed bunk when provided with softer flooring. These results indicate that cows find softer flooring surfaces more comfortable to stand on than concrete, and highlight the importance of evaluating the comfort of the entire facility.  相似文献

Many dairy farmers in North America disbud or dehorn their cattle to improve human and animal safety. The Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM v. 4.0) program requires that disbudding be performed before 8 wk of age with pain-control medication. The objective of this observational cross-sectional study was to quantify disbudding and dehorning practices of Wisconsin dairy producers to target future extension programming. Responses from 217 Wisconsin dairy producers and calf raisers were collected via digital surveys distributed at extension events and through industry contacts. Of the 217 respondents, 188 performed on-farm disbudding themselves. Most respondents (61%) used caustic paste as their primary method, which was most commonly applied on the day the calf was born (53%). Hot iron was used by 32% of respondents, and surgical methods (gouge, scoop, or wire saw) were used by 6% of respondents. Hot-iron disbudding was most commonly performed at 4 to 8 wk of age (41%) and 1 to 4 wk of age (33%), whereas surgical methods were most commonly performed at 8 wk or older (73%). Pain-control medication was used by 43% of respondents. Specifically, 35% used an anti-inflammatory, and 21% used a local nerve block. Veterinary involvement in creating the disbudding protocol was associated with increased odds of using pain control. Respondents with a target weaning age of ≥10 wk had greater odds of complying with FARM disbudding requirements and were also more likely to use polled genetics. Respondents aged 18 to 34 and respondents with >60 calves were more likely to have made changes to their disbudding or dehorning protocol in the last decade. Although use of pain control was higher than in previous US studies, full adoption of pain management requires further extension efforts. Veterinarians appeared influential on adoption of pain control, and their involvement may encourage adoption of pain management. Further research should investigate how the implementation of new FARM v. 4.0 standards will change the disbudding and dehorning practices of American dairy producers.  相似文献

Lameness represents a significant management challenge in the dairy industry worldwide. In addition to farmers, many advisors are involved in lameness management, including veterinarians, hoof trimmers, and nutritionists. These advisors support farmers through lameness prevention practices, treatments, and advice, but little is known about how advisors view others' roles and the extent to which they work together. This study used qualitative participatory methods to facilitate the formation of lameness advisory groups among 13 advisors (4 veterinarians, 5 hoof trimmers, and 4 nutritionists), with the aims of promoting advisors' engagement with one another and documenting their perceptions of the benefits and challenges of the research activities through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Participants shared predominantly positive views toward the project and voiced appreciation about the quality of discussions and the opportunity to connect and build relationships with other advisors. Participants reported improved communication with others via sharing reports and farm information, as well as increased confidence in reaching out to other advisors. Reported challenges included time constraints and discomfort in leading the lameness advisory group meetings. Difficulties were also found in bringing issues to farmers' attention when they might not align with the farmers' goals or priorities, as well as participants' questioning other advisors' knowledge and intentions. This study describes a promising avenue of facilitating advisor engagement, although more work is needed to determine whether such engagement translates to a reduction of lameness on farms.  相似文献
