The vital role that electrical engineering departments must play in providing undergraduates with special competence in computer sciences is explored. Three related problem areas are discussed: (1) meeting the needs of students majoring in computer sciences in electrical engineering; (2) balancing the treatment of continuous and discrete systems so that students have a background in discrete systems comparable to that which they now acquire in continuous systems; and (3) realizing wider and more effective use of the digital computer as a tool for analysis and design in all engineering courses. A future scanning/transmission electron microscope is proposed to be a comprehensive machine that is capable of providing picoseconds time-resolved information at sub-nanometer scale and even at picometer scale, spatial resolution. At the same time, physical and chemical properties can be measured in situ from a region as small as a few nanometers by introducing local electric, mechanical, thermal, magnetic and/or optical stimulations/excitations under vacuum or even in a quasi-ambient environment. It is anticipated that nanoscopy and picoscopy will be key tools for studying picoscale science and developing nanoscale technology related to materials science, biology, physics and chemistry. 相似文献

Based on a study of nearly 200 international faculty in the field of computer science and computer engineering, roughly 90 written genres in the computing discipline are identified and organized according to five central aims in the profession: generation, procuration, dissemination, evaluation, and regulation. The importance of writing in the field is discussed, and recommendations for further research follow to encourage greater breadth and depth in the identification and study of generic corpora characteristic of specific professional communities. With the burst of Information Technology (IT) bubble at the beginning of this century, people are looking for the next wave of technology in which to invest. While we believe that biomedical applications and systems are this next stage, unfortunately, the engineering and bioscience communities are unprepared for the many challenges. In order to connect the engineering and the biomedical science communities, we established the LifeScience Systems and Applications (LiSSA) Technical Committee within IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 2005--an initiative supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through a conference grant to enable dialogue between the engineering and biomedical science communities. Henceforth, we have organized several annual workshops with different themes on the NIH campus. After each workshop, a white paper is published in IEEE circuits and systems magazine to present the major challenges in various chosen theme areas. Recently, we chose "Biomarker Development and Applications" as our workshop theme. For the first time, we invited eight IEEE societies and various NIH institutes to send their representatives for face-to-face dialogue. This article presents the major challenges in biomarker development and applications based on the general consensus of the conference. The aim of the article is to serve as a wake-up call for more engineers to participate in crucial life-science application and systems research. 相似文献

A virtual manufacturing approach for designing, programming, testing, verifying and deploying control systems for agile modular manufacturing machinery are proposed in this paper. It introduces the concepts, operations, mechanisms and implementation techniques for integrating simulation environments and distributed control system environments so that the control logic programs that have been programmed and verified in the virtual environment can be seamlessly transferred to the distributed control system environment for controlling the real devices. The approach looks to exploit simulation in a much wider range of applications with great advantages in the design and development of manufacturing machine systems. In particular, it facilitates the verification of the runtime support applications using the simulation model before they are applied to the real system. Mechanisms that allow runtime data to be collected during operation of the real machinery to calibrate the simulation models are also proposed. Statistical tests are developed to provide an operational definition of the term `under control' for application in deciding whether trend charts in semiconductor operations should be implemented as control charts, which often require considerable investment in responding to special cause flags. The decision rules derive from Monte Carlo simulations of traditional special cause flags modified for sample size to provide constant and low probabilities of inappropriate process rejection, to help ensure easy tracing of underlying problems and to help ensure large improvements in process capability from investment in fixes. The tests maintain the high efficiency of time series analysis intrinsic to traditional special cause flags. That uncompensated effects of sample size in control chart setup invite wildly uncontrolled risk of rejecting good processes is shown. A survey of 1000 undergraduate engineering students clearly revealed students' desire for two types of training in oral communication: training in presentation skills and in the skills of professional conversation. This article briefly describes the survey's design and results, and identifies the lack of conversational training for nonnative English speakers (NNS) as a previously unnoticed weakness in our curriculum. It traces curricular development in conversational training initiated in response to survey results, describes specific challenges to NNS posed by dialogue, and suggests exercises that can help NNS engineering students to improve their fluency and confidence in English conversation. 相似文献
