康义会长深入地震灾区亲切慰问有色企业

"5·12"汶川特大地震发生以后,灾区有色企业受灾、救灾的情况始终牵动着康义会长的心。5月23日-25日,康义会长一行来到四川德阳、阿坝等地,慰问有色金属工业受灾企业,调研四川有色企业受灾情况,并代表中国有色金属工业协会及所属单位向受灾最严重的四川宏达集团和阿坝铝厂捐款。

Being "Clinical"--Positively.

This column provides comments on David Lynn's letter in the May "American Psychologist" (1956). Most clinicians will agree heartily with Lynn's opinion that caution should be exercised in communicating "clinical" impressions to others. Irresponsible or "wild" interpretation is usually harmful and rarely harmless, in any setting. One gets the impression that Lynn feels that being "clinical" usually involves communication of one's inferences to others and that such inferences are predominantly negative and destructive. "Non-condensed" and "condensed" chromain in transitional cell carcinoma of the human urinary bladder

The area and content of "non-condensed" and "condensed" chromatin in smeared Feulgen-stained malignant urothelial cells were determined by means of scanning-cytophotometry. The results were compared with those from similar measurements of benign human transitional epithelial cells. There was no difference between the relative area and content of "non-condensed" and "condensed" chromatin in cancer nuclei and normal urothelial nuclei as far as nuclei of the same size and ploidy class were considered. Within the same ploidy class the relative area and content of "non-condensed" chromatin increased with increasing nuclear size. As increased nuclear size within the same ploidy class is typical for most cancer cells, cancer specimens therefore contained relatively more "non-condensed" chromatin than normal urothelium. Analogously the relative values of "condensed" chromatin decreased in cancer specimens. Only in high-polyploid cancer cells, which occurred more frequently in undifferentiated tumours, a slight decrease of the relative area and content of "non-condensed" chromatin was observed as compared with well differentiated diploid tumour cells. It was in polyploid tumours that the absolute area and content of "condensed" chromatin was increased as compared with diploid normal urothelium. This means that the changes in "non-condensed" and "condensed" chromatin were primarily dependent on nuclear size and total chromatin content and were not found to be a characteristic of cancer nuclei as compared with control nuclei of the same size and ploidy. These findings differ from the results of biochemical analyses of heterochromatin both in cells during carcinogenesis and also in cancer cells, but are in agreement with qualitative and quantitative morphological studies of smeared cancer nuclei.     

"Survivors" and "victims": long-term HIV positive individuals and the ethos of self-empowerment

Recent research on contemporary processes of self-construction has suggested that the concepts of "self", "health", "morality" and "responsibility" have become inextricably interconnected, to the extent that the "pursuit of health has become the pursuit of moral personhood" [R. Crawford (1994) The boundaries of the self and the unhealthy other: reflections on health, culture and AIDS, Social Science & Medicine 38(10), 1347-1365]. What happens then when a person becomes "diseased"? Are they doomed to the stagnant mire of "illness" and "immorality", to the role of undesirable "other"? What if the disease is HIV infection? Is it the case of HIV = AIDS = DEATH = "OTHER" par excellence? This paper addresses these issues by examining the constructions of "self" and "other" used by HIV positive individuals themselves. By reference to a specific group of people living with long-term HIV positive diagnoses, it demonstrates how unhealthy HIV infected "others", as perceived by "healthy" members of society, create their own conceptions of "self" and "other" which microcosmically mirror typical processes of identity construction. The content, function and potential advantages and disadvantages of these processes are highlighted.

"Lingue di seripi", "serpents' tongues" and "glossopetrae". Highlights from the history of popular "cult" medicine in early modern times

In the 16th, 17th and 18th century "Glossopetrae", popularly known as "Lingue di Serpi", found on the Mediterranean island of Malta, were extensively used for medical purposes as antidotes. These fossil teeth, including specimens of the "Carcharodon Megalodon" (an extinct variant of the great white shark), were ground to powder or used as amulet pendants and "credence" and exported to pharmacies and shops in various cities of Europe. In antiquity, authors like Plinius or Solinus, excluding any religious connotations, had regarded "Glossopetrae" as objects "fallen from heaven on dark moonless nights". However, from the beginning of the 16th century the miraculous antidotic power of the specimens found at Malta was very strongly connected with the Pauline cult there. This cult owed ist origin to the excerpt of the shipwreck of the Apostle of the Gentiles on this island, as recorded in the New Testament. As in so many cases found in medieval and early modern medicine and pharmacy, the renown, collection, distribution and use of the antidote "Glossopetrae" or "Lingue di Serpi" was never limited to its real chemical and pharmaceutical properties. In the period of enlightenment and secular thinking mythic medicine as "Glossopetrae" had lost ist "magical" power. Consequently, with beginning of the late 18th century also the Maltese "Glossopetrae" featured in literature merely as exotic objects of curiosity or symbols of an age bound to medical superstition.     

"Psychotherapy's" Autonomy.

Comments on the article by A. Astin (see record 1962-03183-001) which examined the functional autonomy of psychotherapy. The current author was left with the vague suspicion that Astin had martialed a good deal of scholarly evidence to prove a point that needs no proof. Psychotherapy is autonomous and serious students of it are giving a good deal of thought, time, and energy to a consideration of its functional properties. Certainly many of the "practitioners" are as unhappy as Astin over the uncertainties involved, but fortunately, unlike Astin they have not washed their hands of the "bothersome business" of outcome or process. The first issue that needs attention is his opening sentence. Unfortunately, here he gives no reference to indicate how long we have been about the business of attempting to formulate rigorously any test hypotheses about the therapy relationship within that situation itself and in the laboratory as well. The second and final point the current author makes is that it is unnecessary to answer Astin's article point by point. It would be more fruitful to look at the term "psychotherapy" and see in what way he may not have attended to what is perhaps the most important part of the problem he raises. That is, what does it mean to condemn "psychotherapy" when there are so many meanings attached to it, all applied by men of general good will who do intend to "provide a service to troubled people." Workshop "Radio-oncology and the Law"

From 25 to 27 Sept 1997, a workshop was organized at the Essen Medical School (Universit?tsklinikum Essen), at which radiooncologists and jurists from universities and courts as well as lawyers contributed their views on mutual problems. The following topics were discussed by papers and in round table meetings: "Requirements on the patient's information", "definition of therapeutic guidelines-limits of clinical research and standard treatments", "treatment documentation", "liability of the physician for treatment faults" and "technical standard and preserve of quality". The consensual guidelines to the topics "patient's information", "therapeutic guidelines" and "liability" are presented here.
