This study examined the impact of night shift on six dimensions of mood. The efficacy of a range of personality, behavioural, and social/organizational predictors of these responses was also examined. Thirty-five female student nurses were studied during their first period of night work. ANOVAs indicated that only fatigue-inertia and vigour-activity were significantly affected by night work. Multivariate profile analyses revealed that significant changes were predominantly confined to the interval between the preceding rest day (B) and the first night (N1), although vigour-activity dropped significantly between Nl and N2 and rose significantly by N5 for one group of subjects. Multiple regression analyses revealed that morningness, neuroticism, work-non-work conflict, and sleep quality between shifts predicted fatigue-inertia. Extroversion and social support from both co-workers and family predicted vigour-activity. Extroversion and social support from co-workers appeared to predict the positive affect component of vigour-activity, rather than the vigour and energy component.  相似文献

Claims are frequently made that changing from morning to afternoon to night shift at about two- to three-day intervals (rapid rotation) is the best way of organizing 24h staffing. A critical analysis is made of the grounds for these assertion, followed by a review of evidence bearing upon the issue of whether longer periods of rotation are to be preferred. The conclusion is that permanent (zero rotation), fixed-night systems are superior on most counts, and should be implemented for night work, leaving the option of rapid rotation to cover the two (morning and afternoon) day shifts. This said, the multiplicity of shift systems and settings means that this will not always be the method of choice. Furthermore the recommendation should be regarded as provisional pending a search for more data directly comparing the two systems.  相似文献

It is important for an occupational health service to plan health supervision and measures for shift and night workers considering the biorhythmic and psychosocial desynchronisation, as well as the frequent prevalence of combined effects of adverse environmental and working conditions. The measures taken should be preventive to reduce the expected health risks rather than being rehabilitative. Both a medical surveillance and a counselling service are recommended before and during engagement in shift and night work. Sleep, digestive, metabolic and cardiovascular troubles should be noted and followed up. Medical counselling is especially necessary in the first months of shift and night work exposure and then after long-term exposure. The postulate for timed surveillance and intervention is supported by data of our epidemiologic investigations. The importance of the single health measures is underlined by direct reference to the relevant literature. Recommendations that should be applied in all countries and enterprises are in accordance with the ILO Night Work Convention 1990a and include: (1) appropriate occupational health services provided for night and shift workers, including counselling; (2) first aid facilities during all shift hours; (3) the option of transfer to day work when certified unfit for night work for reasons of health; and (4) measures for women on night shifts, in particular special maternity protection (transfer to day work, social security benefits or an extension of maternity leave). Examples of occupational health services already installed in some states for shift and night workers, and information on future developments are given. Up to now the medical service has been implemented mostly on the basis of collective agreements rather than on the basis of legal provisions. The Austrian Night Shift/Heavy Work Law Regulations of 1981, revised 1993, are cited: workers exposed to night shifts under defined single or combined additional heavy workloads are entitled to a special health assessment, additional rest pauses, additional free time and early retirement depending on years of exposure.  相似文献

Shift work, in particular night work, can have a negative impact on health and well-being of workers as it can cause: (a) disturbances of the normal circadian rhythms of the psychophysiological functions, beginning with the sleep/wake cycle; (b) interferences with work performance and efficiency over the 24 hour span, with consequent errors and accidents; (c) difficulties in maintaining the usual relationships both at family and social level, with consequent negative influences on marital relations, care of children and social contacts; (d) deterioration of health that can be manifested in disturbances of sleeping and eating habits and, in the long run, in more severe disorders that deal prevalently with the gastrointestinal (colitis, gastroduodenitis and peptic ulcer), neuro-psychic (chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression) and, probably, cardiovascular (hypertension, ischemic heart diseases) functions. Besides, shift and night work may have more specific adverse effects on women's health both in relation to their particular hormonal and reproductive function, and their family roles. It has been estimated that about 20% of all workers have to leave shift work in a very short time because of serious disturbances; those remaining in shift work show different levels of (mal)adaptation and (in)tolerance, that can become more or less manifest in different times, and with different intensity. In fact, the effects of such stress condition can vary widely among the shift workers in relation to many 'intervening variables' concerning both individual factors (e.g. age, personality traits, physiological characteristics), as well as working situations (e.g. work loads, shift schedules) and social conditions (e.g. number and age of children, housing, commuting).  相似文献

In order to test the possible long-term effects of the implementation of a short nap during night shifts, an experiment was conducted over a period of 1 year with 12 volunteer shiftworkers operating in an industrial plant. They were authorized, under certain conditions, to use individual sleeping areas, for a maximum of 1 hour, between 23h30 and 3h30. The participants were asked to fill in a short questionnaire every day during the entire study. The questions concerned the schedule of the main sleep period, the afternoon nap and the night-time nap, if any, as well as the evaluation of mood and the quality of work. This daily questionnaire was supplemented by an extensive questionnaire applied every 2 months in order to assess the main changes introduced in the life of the participants by this new working schedule. Results showed that this new organization introduced a general satisfaction about the quality and the easiness of the work at night. The vigilance level was considered to be higher during the hours following the nap. The efficacy of the nap time progressively increased for most subjects. The general quality of life improved for most subjects. While a few of them considered that falling asleep was less easy on the following morning at home, the statistical analysis did not show any detrimental effect of the short rest period on the length of the immediately consecutive main sleep period. However, different statistical analyses allow us to reveal significant differences between the main sleep durations following the night shift compared with those following both the afternoon shift and the resting period. The main sleep duration following the night shift was not statistically different from that of the morning shift. These results are very encouraging. A short nap during the night shift can be considered as a positive way to counteract the low level of vigilance that normally occurs during the late part of the night.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether anesthesia residents (physicians in training) performed clinical duties in the operating room differently during the day versus at night. BACKGROUND: Fatigue from sleep deprivation and working through the night is common for physicians, particularly during residency training. METHODS: Using a repeated-measures design, we studied 13 pairs of day-night matched anesthesia cases. Dependent measures included task times, workload ratings, response to an alarm light latency task, and mood. RESULTS: Residents spent significantly less time on manual tasks and more time on monitoring tasks during the maintenance phase at night than during the day. Residents reported more negative mood at night than during the day, both pre- and postoperation. However, time of day had no effect on the mood change between pre- and postoperation. Workload ratings and the response time to an alarm light latency task were not significantly different between night and day cases. CONCLUSIONS: Because night shift residents had been awake and working for more than 16 hr, the observed differences in task performance and mood may be attributed to fatigue. The changes in task distribution during night shift work may represent compensatory strategies to maintain patient care quality while keeping perceived workload at a manageable level. APPLICATIONS: Fatigue effects during night shifts should be considered when designing work-rest schedules for clinicians. This matched-case control scheme can also be applied to study other phenomena associated with patient safety in the actual clinical environment.  相似文献

The results of some intervention studies on the effects of the change from weekly rotating to quicker rotating shift systems are presented. Consequently, the following recommendations for the design of shift systems according to physiological, psychological and social criteria are discussed: (1) Nightwork should be reduced as much as possible. If this is not possible, quickly rotating shift systems are preferable to slowly rotating ones. Permanent nightwork does not seem to be recommendable for the majority of shiftworkers. (2) Extended workdays (9-12 hours) should only be contemplated when the nature of work and the workload are suitable for extended working hours, and the shift system is designed to minimize the accumulation of fatigue and toxic exposure is limited. (3) An early start for the morning shift should be avoided. Flexible working time arrangements can be achieved in all shift systems. The highest flexibility is possible in the so-called 'time autonomous groups'. (4) Quick changeovers (e.g. from night shift to afternoon shift on the same day) should be avoided. The number of consecutive working days should be limited to five-seven. Every shift system should include some free weekends with at least two consecutive days off. (5) The forward rotation (phase delay, clockwise rotation: morning/evening/night shift) would seem to be most preferred.  相似文献

All shift systems have advantages and drawbacks. There is no single ‘optimum shift system’ which can be used in industry or commerce at all work places. However, there are shift systems which are more favourable, and others which are less favourable, in the context of physiological, psychological, and social recommendations for the design of shift systems. This article discusses the following recommendations:

(1) Nightwork should be reduced as much as possible. If this is not possible, quickly rotating shift systems are preferable to slowly rotating ones. Permanent nightwork does not seem to be advisable for the majority of shiftworkers.

(2) Extended workdays (9-12 h) should only be contemplated, if the nature of work and the workload are suitable; the shift system is designed to minimize the accumulation of fatigue; there are adequate arrangements for cover of absentees; overtime will not be added; toxic exposure is limited; and if it is likely that a complete recovery after work and a high acceptance of the working time arrangement are possible.

(3) An early start for the morning shift should be avoided. In all shiftsystems flexible working time arrangements- are realizable. The highest flexibility is possible in ‘time autonomous groups’.

(4) Quick changeovers (e.g., from night to afternoon shift at the same day or from afternoon to morning shift) must be avoided. The number of consecutive working days should be limited to 5-7 days. Every shift system should include some free weekends with at least two successive full days off.

(5) The forward rotation of shifts (phase delay, clockwise rotation) would seem to be recommendable at least in continuous shift systems.

Besides the design of a shift system, implementation strategy is of particular importance for the acceptance of the shift system.  相似文献

The argument for greater use of permanent night shift does not match the three times greater use of rotating three-shift systems in Britain. Studies of industrial production show very slight differences between output on different shifts, unlike laboratory studies, suggesting that it is almost impossible to reproduce the practice, motivation, and real consequences of work in laboratory settings. People who prefer permanent night shift often prefer to avoid management, and few managements welcome this; or have important tasks to perform at home in the day-time. Some studies of adaptation have defined inversion of temperature curves poorly, and most night-workers never completely adapt. Social flexibility, which has been the main attraction of rapidly rotating shifts, can be reproduced on permanent night shifts, but then loses the possibility of adaptation.  相似文献

The Mars exploration rover mission has conducted continuous Mars surface operations for over 24 months to date. The operations processes and tools put in place before landing have continued to develop throughout the surface mission, evolving from a capability intended to operate for less than four months to one capable of continuing indefinitely. The MER operations design has been accepted as baseline for the Mars Science Laboratory mission, scheduled for launch in 2009. Our experiences during MER's exciting and unexpectedly extensive surface exploration phase may provide useful insights for other future long duration surface missions.  相似文献

Abstract

Car and road designs are considered to be better when they require less driver attention and allow drivers to behave more as a supervisory controller in coping with normal, multi-task driving. In this paper an example is presented with respect to road design and, more specifically, with respect to various configurations of delineation on wet roads at night. The criteria for supervisory control are focused on drivers' observation strategy in terms of ‘free times’ available for tasks beyond lateral vehicle control, on drivers' control strategy in terms of amplitudes and frequencies of steering-wheel movements, and on the overall driving performance in terms of variations in lateral position and yaw rate.

The research findings on straight and curved roads recommend the necessity of using delineation devices at both sides of the traffic lane by the implementation of profiled stripes, raised pavement markers at the location of the centre and/or lane boundaries, or post-mounted delineators just beside the boundary. Post-mounted delineators on larger cross distances are less effective. The longitudinal spacing between the raised pavement markers has to be restricted up to 12 m for curves with radii for 200 m and up to 24 m for straight roads.  相似文献

Two hundred and sixty-one shiftworkers from a range of UK industrial and service organizations, took part in a study to determine the impact of the direction of shift rotation on the health and well-being of the individuals concerned. All the systems were continuous, rotating over three shifts. Systems were classified according to whether they delayed (i.e., rotated in a forward direction) or advanced (i.e., rotated in a backward direction). In addition, advancing systems were divided into those which incorporated a quick return (i.e., a break of only 8 h when changing from one shift to another) and those which did not. The results add some support for the use of delaying as opposed to advancing systems, and highlight the detrimental effects of incorporating a quick return into an advancing system.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to analyze some connections between experience, health and work, especially in the field of night work. As a result of the baby boom, the proportion of elderly workers is steadily increasing, while at the same time many workers are reaching retirement age and being replaced by younger people. And, in the same time, there is an overall gradual increase in shift work and night work. To our knowledge, worker experience has not been extensively studied in this context. This was our focus in studying work activity in two very different situations, in a hospital and in a steel industry.In these two studies we observed that the experienced workers endeavor to plan ahead, especially at night. They do this to limit fatigue and to avoid emergencies and ensure that work is stress-free and as far as possible under control. But experience not only brings workers to plan ahead, it also enables them to do so, thanks to the resources it confers: gaining familiarity with tasks and acquiring the ability to identify critical situations, gaining knowledge about themselves and awareness of situations that cause difficulty; and gaining a better overview of the collective aspects of their work and of ways to share tasks or obtain assistance.They are able to undertake these strategies thanks to specific skills and capacities they have built along their professional career, which notably leads them to find the best trade-off between several goals, possibly contradictory.Such experience is especially valuable at night, when the worker is tired, and when there are fewer supervisors present. This experience can only be gained, however, if the work environment fosters its acquisition and provides an opportunity to make use of it, especially during the night shift and especially with respect to planning tasks ahead of time.  相似文献

To examine the effects of shift schedules on fatigue and physiological functions among firefighters a 17-day field study at a fire station was carried out. Eleven firefighters, who were engaged in firefighting emergency services, participated in this study. At the fire station, night duty (22:00-07:00) was divided into 5 periods (P1: 22:00-00:00; P2: 23:45-01:45; P3: 01:30-03:30; P4: 03:15-05:15; P5: 05:00-07:00). The participants were assigned to one of these 5 periods and awakened to answer calls from the city's central information centre. They took naps in individual rooms during night duty, except when on night shift or when called out on an emergency. Subjective complaints of fatigue, critical flicker fusion frequencies, 3-choice reaction times, and oral temperature were measured before and after work and following breaks during their 24 working hours. Heart rate variability was also recorded to evaluate autonomic nerve activity. The results show that during P3 and P4, participants who had to wake up at midnight took shorter naps. The rates of subjective complaints regarding P3 and P4 tended to be higher than those for P1, P2, and P5. The ratios of the low frequency component of heart rate variability to the high frequency component during P4 were significantly lower than those during P5. It is assumed that such an irregular sleeping pattern causes many complaints of subjective fatigue, and adversely affects physiological functions. A night-duty shift schedule ensuring undisturbed naps should be considered.  相似文献

Shiftworkers differ as to scheduling their day sleep between night shifts. An experimental study was carried out to compare the effects of morning and afternoon sleep behaviour on sleep quality within and after a period of seven night shifts. Twelve young males participated in a repeated–measures design, six sleeping in the morning and six in the afternoon after night shifts. Sleep quality was evaluated by polysomnographic and subjective measures. Morning and afternoon sleepers showed some differences in the trend of sleep changes over successive sleep periods. However, at the end of the night shift week, there were no marked differences in sleep quality. Both morning and afternoon sleep were characterized by deep sleep, and short sleep onset latencies.  相似文献

Certain Laguerre and Kautz shift-induced, finite-dimensional approximations of an important class of delay systems are studied. A substantially complete set of lower and upper H infinity and H2/L2 error bounds is given. Furthermore, exact asymptotic H infinity error formulas are provided. The Laguerre formula provides surprisingly good finite-dimensional models of delay systems in the most transparent manner possible.  相似文献
