The hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films were prepared on AISI 440C steel substrates using a RF magnetron sputtering graphite target in the CH4 and Ar mixture atmosphere. The friction and wear behavior of a-C:H films were comparatively investigated by pin-on-disc tester under dry sliding and simulated sand-dust wear conditions. In addition, the effects of applied load, amount of sand and sand particle sizes on the tribological performance of a-C:H films were systemically studied. Results show that a-C:H films exhibited ultra-high tribological performance with low friction coefficient and ultra-low wear rate under sand-dust environments. It is very interesting to observe that the friction coefficient of a-C:H film under sand-dust conditions was relatively lower when compared with dry sliding condition, and the wear rate under sand-dust conditions kept at the same order of magnitude (×10−19 m3/N m) with the increase of applied load and particle size as a comparison with the dry sliding condition. Based on the formation of “ridge” layer (composite transfer layer), a transfer layer-hardening composite model was established to explain the anti-wear mechanisms and friction-reducing capacity of a-C:H solid lubrication films under sand-dust conditions.  相似文献

Tribological experiments on phenol–formaldehyde composite reinforced with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and glass fibers were performed against 100Cr6 steel and TiC/a-C:H thin film-coated 100Cr6 steel. In both cases, the coefficient of friction increases with increasing sliding distance until a steady-state value is reached. Although the steady-state values of the coefficient of friction are very close and ultralow, the wear rate of the PTFE composite liner at a long sliding distance (1,000 m) is reduced when the steel ball is coated with the TiC/a-C:H coating. This behavior is mainly attributed to the smoother surface after long sliding and the improved wear resistance of TiC/a-C:H coating. PTFE transfer films are evident on the surfaces of the hard counterparts. The average thickness of the transfer film on TiC/a-C:H-coated surfaces is about 3.8 nm. On the surface of uncoated steel ball, a continuous but non-uniform transfer film of around 13.9 nm average thickness was found.  相似文献

Friction and wear behaviors of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) and hydrogen-free amorphous carbon (a-C) films sliding against Si3N4 balls were investigated in different testing environments. The result showed that two films with extreme chemical disparity (one hydrogenated, and the other hydrogen free) showed distinct different friction and wear behaviors, and the friction and wear behaviors of the both films were strongly dependent on the environment. For a-C:H films, much low friction coefficient and wear rate were obtain in dry N2. In the water and/or oxygen containing environments, the friction coefficient and wear rate of a-C:H films were obviously increased. On the contrary, a-C films only provided low friction coefficient and wear rate in the presence of water and/or oxygen in the test chamber. In dry N2, the highest friction coefficient and wear rate were observed for a-C films. By investigating the worn surfaces of the films using XPS, it was proposed that the environment dependence of the friction and wear behaviors of the films was closely related with the friction-induced chemical interactions between the films and water and/or oxygen molecules. The specific roles of hydrogen, water and oxygen molecules and their tribochemical effects on the friction and wear mechanism of the films are discussed.  相似文献

The fretting phenomenon was investigated experimentally in contacts between coated and uncoated steel rod and ball specimens generating a circular Hertzian contact. A fretting wear test rig equipped with a video camera was used to observe the effects of fretting on coated steel surfaces in both grease-lubricated and unlubricated environments. Tungsten carbide reinforced amorphous hydrocarbon (WC/a-C:H) and chromium nitride (Cr2N) coatings were tested and compared. Fretting wear volumes and surface profiles are presented for both grease-lubricated and unlubricated conditions. Videos of a coated ball fretting against a transparent sapphire flat were recorded and screen captures are presented. The role of normal load, lubrication, frequency, and amplitude of motion on the fretting wear of coatings is discussed. The lubricant released from the grease was observed to flow through channels in the stick zone of the fretting contacts. Both coatings were found to reduce fretting wear. WC/a-C:H was more effective at reducing wear under unlubricated conditions. WC/a-C:H decreased fretting wear more than Cr2N when delamination was avoided in grease-lubricated contacts.  相似文献

Influences of environmental humidity on various scanning-scratched wear characteristics, such as long-term stability of wear resistance and load dependence, scratch number dependence and scratch velocity dependence of wear depth, are evaluated by using an atomic force microscope and diamond tips. Amorphous carbon (a-C) films are deposited on silicon substrates by the electron cyclotron resonance plasma (ECR) sputtering method and the RF sputtering method combined with CVD using argon gas containing methane (CH4) as a sputtering gas. In carbon samples with a higher hydrogen content, clear influences of the humidity on various wear characteristics are observed and their wear resistances decrease with increase of the humidity. In the ECR sputtered carbon film with low hydrogen content, wear resistance is stable during long-term exposure to an environment of high temperature and high humidity. In this film, the influences of humidity on the wear resistance and adhesion forces between the films and the substrates are not observed, since it is highly wear resistant and the wear depths are shallow in each test. Thus, amorphous carbon films with low hydrogen content are suitable as wear resistant protective overcoats from the point of view of the wear resistance, in particular the influence of the humidity on the wear resistance including its long-term stability.  相似文献

The nanotribological properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) films of thickness in the range of 5-85 nm sputtered on Si(1 0 0) substrates were investigated with a surface force microscope (SFM), using a Berkovich diamond tip of nominal radius of curvature approximately equal to 200 nm and contact (normal) loads between 10 and 1200 μN. The dependence of the friction and wear behaviors of the a-C films on normal load and film thickness was studied in terms of nanomechanical properties, images of scratched surfaces, and numerical results obtained from a previous analytical friction model. The increase of the contact load caused the coefficient of friction to decrease initially to a minimum value and, subsequently, to increase to a maximum value, after which, it either remained constant or decreased slightly. The dominant friction mechanism in the low-load range was adhesion, while both adhesion and plowing mechanisms contributed to the friction behavior in the intermediate- and high-load ranges. Thinner (thicker) a-C films yielded higher (lower) friction coefficients for normal loads less than 50 μN (low-load range) and lower (higher) friction coefficients for normal loads greater than 150 μN (high-load range). Elastic and plastic deformation, microcracking, and delamination of the a-C films occurred, depending on the contact load and film thickness ranges. The reduced load-carrying capacity, relatively low effective hardness (strength) obtained with thinner films, and dominant friction and wear mechanisms at each load range illustrate the film thickness and contact load dependence of the nanotribological properties of the sputtered a-C films.  相似文献

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have drawn much attention as potential surface coatings for engineering contacts because of their excellent friction and wear resistance properties. However, much less is known about their friction and wear mechanisms, especially at higher contact pressures. In this study, two amorphous carbon DLCs, with (a-C:Si) and without Si (a-C), have been investigated to understand the influence of Si on friction and wear under dry, base oil- and fully formulated oil-lubricated conditions. Si does not affect friction but significantly affects wear. a-C:Si shows lower wear than a-C but imparts higher wear on the steel counterpart. The steel counterpart that forms a hybrid tribolayer (transferred carbon from DLC + additive-derived tribofilm products) exhibits superior wear resistance properties.  相似文献

The tribological performance of halogen-free ionic liquids at steel–steel and diamond-like carbon (DLC)–DLC contacts was investigated. Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) and tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) were used as test specimens. Friction tests were carried out on steel–steel, a-C:H–a-C:H, and ta-C–ta-C contacts by using a reciprocating cylinder-on-disk tribotester lubricated with two different types of halogen-free ionic liquids: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([BMIM][DCN]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ([BMIM][TCC]). From the results of friction tests, the ta-C–ta-C tribopair lubricated with [BMIM][DCN] or [BMIM][TCC] exhibited an ultralow friction coefficient of 0.018–0.03. On the other hand, ultralow friction was not observed at the steel–steel and a-C:H–a-C:H contacts. Measurements obtained with a laser scanning microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM) showed that a chemical reaction film, derived from the ionic liquid lubricant used, was formed on the steel surfaces. However, this chemical reaction film was not observed on either of the DLC surfaces. The AFM results showed that there were high-viscosity products on the ta-C surfaces, that the wear tracks on the ta-C surfaces exhibited low frictional properties, and that the ta-C surfaces were extremely smooth after the friction tests. Based on these results, it was concluded that an ionic liquid–derived adsorbed film formed on the ta-C surface and resulted in the ultralow friction when lubricated with a halogen-free ionic liquid.  相似文献

The mechanical as well as tribological characteristics of coating films as thin as a few nm become more crucial as applications in micro-systems grow. Especially, the amorphous carbon film has a potential to be used as a protective layer for micro-systems. In this work, quantitative evaluation of nano-indentation, scratching, and wear tests were performed on the 7nm thick amorphous carbon film using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). It was shown that AFM-based nano-indentation using a diamond coated tip can be feasibly utilized for mechanical characterization of ultra-thin films. Also, it was found that the critical load where the failure of the carbon film occurred was about 18μN by the ramp load scratch test. Finally, the wear experimental results showed that the quantitative wear rate of the carbon film ranged 10-9~10-8 mm3/N cycle. These experimental methods can be effectively utilized for a better understanding the mechanical and tribological characteristics at the nano-scale.  相似文献

利用脉冲真空弧源沉积技术在Cr17Ni14Cu4不锈钢和Si(100)基体上制备了类金刚石(DLC)薄膜,研究了基体沉积温度对DLC薄膜的性能和结构的影响。研究表明,随着沉积温度由100 ℃提高到400 ℃,DLC薄膜中sp3 键质量分数减少,sp2键质量分数增多,薄膜复合硬度逐渐降低。当DLC薄膜沉积温度达到400 ℃时,薄膜中C原子主要以sp2键形式存在,与沉积温度为100 ℃时制备的DLC薄膜相比,薄膜复合硬度降低50%。DLC薄膜具有优异的耐磨性,摩擦因数低,随着沉积温度由100 ℃提高到400 ℃,Cr17Ni14Cu4不锈钢表面沉积的DLC薄膜耐磨性降低。沉积温度为100 ℃时,Cr17Ni14Cu4不锈钢表面沉积的DLC薄膜后,耐磨性大幅度提高。DLC薄膜与不锈钢基体结合牢固。  相似文献

The use of low friction coatings like amorphous carbon or metal-doped carbon coatings on machine elements is constantly increasing. Most often, a surface treatment, e.g. grinding and polishing or honing, is required for optimal performance of the coated machine element. This can be time consuming and costly.In this study, the effect of surface roughness on friction and sliding wear of two different coatings, one tungsten containing and one chromium containing coating, were examined using a ball-on-disc test. Ball bearing steel plates were grinded to different surface roughnesses and coated with the two different coatings.The friction was found to depend on surface roughness where the rougher surfaces gave higher friction coefficients. The wear rate for the a-C:W coating was found to be independent of the roughness, whereas the roughness had a strong influence on the wear rate for the a-C:Cr coating. This could partly be explained by a difference in wear mechanism, where fatigue wear was observed for the a-C:Cr coating but not for the a-C:W coating.  相似文献

A systematic study was conducted on the effect of plasma-enhanced CVD processing parameters, namely bias voltage, pressure and CH4/Ar flow ratio, on the characteristics and tribological response of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films. Film hardness, intrinsic stress, structure, composition and tribological response were characterized. Variation of processing parameters was found to produce a-C:H films with a range of characteristics with the CH4/Ar ratio exercising a dominant effect. A low ratio produced harder films with more sp3 bonding, low hydrogen content and low wear rate; whereas a high ratio produced softer films, with more sp2 bonding, higher hydrogen content and low friction. Film characteristics were found to affect the wear mechanism with softer films showing a layer-by-layer removal and harder films involving formation of fine debris. These two diverse types of films offer the opportunity to synthesize multilayered films combining desirable properties from each component.  相似文献

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are beginning to be used on machine components parts because of their excellent friction and wear resistance properties. It is hence important to be able to formulate lubricants able to work effectively with these coatings. This requires knowledge of how the various surface-reactive additives generally employed in lubricants behave with DLCs. This paper compares the behaviour of seven types of DLC, a-C, a-C:H, a-C:H:W, a-C:H:WC, Si-DLC, ta-C, ta-C:H, lubricated with molybdenum dialkyldithiocarbamate (MoDTC) solution. It is found that a-C and a-C:H:WC give lower boundary friction than the other types of DLC. MoDTC improves the wear resistance of DLC/DLC contacts but appears to greatly degrade the wear resistance properties of some DLCs in DLC/steel contacts, even though Mo-derived tribofilms form on all DLCs.  相似文献

The relationship between friction, wear, and transfer films of three metal carbide-reinforced amorphous carbon coatings (TiC/a:C, TiC/a:C–H, and WC/a:C–H), sometimes referred to as metal-doped diamond-like carbon coatings, has been investigated. Tribological tests were performed in an in situ tribometer with sapphire or steel hemispheres run against coated flats in dry or ambient air. The sliding contact interface was observed and recorded by optical microscopy during reciprocating sliding tests. The friction and wear behavior during run-in depended on the number of sliding cycles to form a stationary transfer film on the hemisphere. Stationary transfer films formed rapidly (within ten cycles) and the friction coefficient fell to 0.2 (ambient air) or 0.1 (dry air), except with sapphire against WC/a:C–H in dry air; with the latter, a stationary transfer film required nearly 100 cycles to form, during which the friction remained high and the wear rate was from 10 to 100 times higher than the other two coatings. For all coatings, three velocity accommodation modes (VAM) were observed from run-in to steady-state sliding and were correlated with the friction and wear behavior. The delayed adherence of the transfer film to sapphire from WC/a:C–H coatings in dry air is discussed in terms of equilibrium thermochemistry. Friction and wear behavior during run-in, therefore, depended on transfer film adherence to the hemisphere and the VAM between transfer films and the coating.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to study the tribology performances of the aC:H(N) films by using a nanotester under different scratch loads and velocities. From the measurements of the friction coefficient and wear volume, the tribological performances including wear resistance and friction coefficients were evaluated for the hydrogenated amorphous carbon films prepared by differing film thickness and nitrogen volume friction in the gas mixture of (C2H2+N2). Taguchi experimental design and the grey relational analysis were used to investigate the influence of specimen parameters (film’s thickness, nitrogen content in the film), and operating conditions in tribological tests (scratch load and scratch velocity) on the friction coefficients and the wear volume arising in the specimens with different coating films. It is found that the wear volume of thin film is increased by increasing either the nitrogen volume fraction or film thickness. Moreover, the optimal combination of the testing parameters was also determined in the use of the present model.  相似文献

500 nm-thick films are deposited on austenitic stainless steel by neutral (Ar+) or reactive (N+) ion beam sputtering of Ni or NiTi targets, with (or without) high energy 160 keV-Ar+ ion beam assistance. Most of the time the coatings are nanocrystalline and induce a large (excellent in some conditions) increase of the wear resistance. Only Ar+ ion beam sputtering of a NiTi target gives an amorphous deposit which does not improve the substrate tribological properties. The hardness and wear resistance of ion beam assisted films are larger than those obtained with non-ion beam assisted coatings. The presence of a hard TiN phase inside a ductile Ni phase, of grains with preferential orientation beneficial to slip, as well as film densification are the main factors which increase the wear resistance. The best results are obtained when the structure is composed of two phases, Ni and TiN. The TiN phase strengthens the already good tribological Ni properties and the Ni ductility induces mechanical accommodation during the friction process.  相似文献

Low-friction coatings are used more and more frequently, particularly in situations and applications with insufficient or no lubrication. A good example of such coatings is amorphous carbon, which is produced both in pure form (a-C:H) and doped with metal (Me-C:H). The knowledge of what actually occurs when one metal in a Me-C:H coating is exchanged with another has so far been rather limited. Also, when producing these films hydrogen is incorporated in the substrate as well as in the film, which can be detrimental to the overall properties.Here, a newly adopted co-sputtering technique, utilizing a carbon target partly covered by metal-foil strips, was used to deposit non-hydrogenated carbon coatings alloyed with Ta, W and Zr on ball-bearing steel (BBS) substrates. The metal content varied between 0 and 41 at.%, and the resulting films were analyzed with respect to phase composition and textures, chemical composition, microstructural morphology, as well as mechanical and tribological properties. All alloyed coatings displayed a nanocomposite microstructure, with 3-6 nm metal-carbide crystallites embedded in a matrix of amorphous carbon. The amount of metal-carbide phase increased with increasing amounts of metal which led to a large increase in hardness and elastic modulus. An increased metal content did however not affect the carbide size to any notable extent. Ball-on-disk tests show that metal additions cause a sharp drop in friction coefficient from 0.21 to about 0.05, depending on the metal used. This is however accompanied by an increase in wear rate. The coating best combining low friction and low wear rate was alloyed with 20 at.% Ta. Best possible protection of the counter surface was offered by coatings containing 30 at.% Ta or more.  相似文献

In the present study, the tribological performance and compatibility of hydrogenated amorphous carbon coating (a-C:H) and metal-doped diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating (Me-C:H) with formulated oils under the boundary lubrication regime was investigated. The investigation employed ball-on-flat contact geometry in reciprocating sliding motion and six formulated oils (manual gearbox oil, automatic gearbox oil, hydraulic oil, compressor oil, and normal and high performance motor oil), with pure poly-alpha-olefin (PAO) oil used as a reference. In addition, DLC coatings behavior in diesel and gasoline fuel was evaluated.Compared with the uncoated steel surfaces a-C:H coatings give improved wear resistance in base PAO as well as in fully formulated oils and fuels. On the other hand, W-doped DLC coatings show the lowest steady-state friction under boundary lubrication, especially when using oils with high additive contents.  相似文献

The mechanical and tribological properties of amorphous carbon films have been studied in more detail in recent years because these films (a) can be deposited near room temperature, thus allowing film deposition on common engineering alloys (i.e., aluminum and steel) without altering their mechanical properties, and (b) are smooth and conform to surface roughness of the substrate, thus requiring no post deposition processing. In addition, amorphous carbon films exhibit low unlubricated sliding friction in contact with steel and ceramics which is comparable to that of steel against steel in a lubricated contact. The wear resistance of these films is also better than Ti‐based hard coatings. Further improvement in film tribological properties can be achieved by modifying film chemical composition. Because of these attractive features, amorphous carbon films have been evaluated in several applications including automotive, electronic and biomedical engineering. However, environmental factors such as oxygen and humidity have been found to influence tribological properties significantly. This paper reviews the current understanding of the tribological properties of both hydrogenated and non‐hydrogenated amorphous carbon films, the mechanisms responsible for low friction coefficient and identifies areas that require further research.
