Detailed and accurate characteristics of preimplantation embryos are fundamental for a deep understanding of their development. Recent studies indicate that various geometric features of cells, such as size, shape, volume, and position play a significant role in embryo growth. However, a quantitative assessment of these characteristics first needs a segmentation of the individual cells. The manual separation and labeling of cells is extremely inefficient, and an automated approach is highly desirable. This paper presents an automatic method for early stage embryo segmentation into its constituent cells and membranes using three-dimensional (3D) data. The input data consist of two Z-stacks of fluorescence microscope images containing nuclei and membranes. The method uses a 3D level set segmentation algorithm. Its evaluation is based on a dataset composed of 20 mouse embryos, each with 4–32 blastomeres. Segmentation accuracy was evaluated by calculating F-scores with ground truth obtained by manually labeling desired regions. We also compared output of our method with the one acquired with a watershed algorithm. The proposed approach was able to achieve more than \(90\%\) accuracy for embryos with 4 and 8 cells, while for embryos with higher number of cells it was lower, reaching \(75\%\) for 32-cell embryo.  相似文献

A Nom historical document recognition system is being developed for digital archiving that uses image binarization, character segmentation, and character recognition. It incorporates two versions of off-line character recognition: one for automatic recognition of scanned and segmented character patterns (7660 categories) and the other for user handwritten input (32,695 categories). This separation is used since including less frequently appearing categories in automatic recognition increases the misrecognition rate without reliable statistics on the Nom language. Moreover, a user must be able to check the results and identify the correct categories from an extended set of categories, and a user can input characters by hand. Both versions use the same recognition method, but they are trained using different sets of training patterns. Recursive XY cut and Voronoi diagrams are used for segmentation; kd tree and generalized learning vector quantization are used for coarse classification; and the modified quadratic discriminant function is used for fine classification. The system provides an interface through which a user can check the results, change binarization methods, rectify segmentation, and input correct character categories by hand. Evaluation done using a limited number of Nom historical documents after providing ground truths for them showed that the two stages of recognition along with user checking and correction improved the recognition results significantly.  相似文献

A semi-automatic system for segmentation of cardiac M-mode images   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Pixel classifiers are often adopted in pattern recognition as a suitable method for image segmentation. A common approach to the performance evaluation of classifier systems is based on the measurement of the classification errors and, at the same time, on the computational time. In general, multiclassifiers have proven to be more precise in the classification in many applications, but at the cost of a higher computational load. This paper analyzes different classifiers and proposes an evaluation of the classifiers in the case of semi-automatic processes with human interaction. Medical imaging is a typical application, where automatic or semi-automatic segmentation can be a valuable support to the diagnosis. The paper focuses on the segmentation of cardiac images of fruit flies (genetic model for analyzing human heart’s diseases). Analysis is based on M-modes, that are gray-level images derived from mono-dimensional projections of the video frames on a line. Segmentation of the M-mode images is provided by classifiers and integrated in a multiclassifier. A neural network classifier, a Bayesian classifier, and a classifier based on hidden Markov chains are joined by means of a Behavior Knowledge Space fusion rule. The comparative evaluation is discussed in terms of both accuracy and required time, in which the time to correct the classifier errors by means of human intervention is also taken into account.

Accurate grading for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) biopsy images is important to prognosis and treatment planning. In this paper, we propose an automatic system for grading HCC biopsy images. In preprocessing, we use a dual morphological grayscale reconstruction method to remove noise and accentuate nuclear shapes. A marker-controlled watershed transform is applied to obtain the initial contours of nuclei and a snake model is used to segment the shapes of nuclei smoothly and precisely. Fourteen features are then extracted based on six types of characteristics for HCC classification. Finally, we propose a SVM-based decision-graph classifier to classify HCC biopsy images. Experimental results show that 94.54% of classification accuracy can be achieved by using our SVM-based decision-graph classifier while 90.07% and 92.88% of classification accuracy can be achieved by using k-NN and SVM classifiers, respectively.  相似文献

Segmentation of vertebral contours is an essential task in the design of imaging biomarkers for osteoporosis based on vertebra shape or texture. In this paper, we propose a novel automatic segmentation technique which can optionally be constrained by the user. The proposed technique solves the segmentation problem in a hierarchical manner. In the first phase, a coarse estimate of the overall spine alignment and the vertebra locations is computed using a sampling scheme. These samples are used to initialize a second phase of active shape model search, under a nonlinear model of vertebra appearance. The search is constrained by a conditional shape model, based on the variability of the coarse spine location estimates. In supplement, we describe an approach for manual initialization of the segmentation procedure as a simple set of constraints on the fully automatic technique. The technique is evaluated on a data base of 157 manually annotated lumbar radiographs, resulting in a final mean point-to-contour error of $0.81~\pm ~0.98$  mm for automatic segmentation. The results outperform the previous work in automatic vertebra segmentation in terms of both segmentation accuracy and failure rate, offering a both automatic and semi-automatic approach in one unifying framework.  相似文献

In recent years, interactive methods for segmentation are increasing in popularity due to their success in different domains such as medical image processing, photo editing, etc. We present an interactive segmentation algorithm that can segment an object of interest from its background with minimum guidance from the user, who just has to select a single seed pixel inside the object of interest. Due to minimal requirements from the user, we call our algorithm semiautomatic. To obtain a reliable and robust segmentation with such low user guidance, we have to make several assumptions. Our main assumption is that the object to be segmented is of compact shape, or can be approximated by several connected roughly collinear compact pieces. We base our work on the powerful graph cut segmentation algorithm of Boykov and Jolly, which allows straightforward incorporation of the compact shape constraint. In order to make the graph cut approach suitable for our semiautomatic framework, we address several well-known issues of graph cut segmentation technique. In particular, we counteract the bias towards shorter segmentation boundaries and develop a method for automatic selection of parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on the challenging industrial application of transistor gate segmentation in images of integrated chips. Our approach produces highly accurate results in real-time.  相似文献

Classification is a popular machine learning task. Given an example x and a class c, a classifier usually works by estimating the probability of x being member of c (i.e., membership probability). Well calibrated classifiers are those able to provide accurate estimates of class membership probabilities, that is, the estimated probability is close to , which is the true, (unknown) empirical probability of x being member of c given that the probability estimated by the classifier is . Calibration is not a necessary property for producing accurate classifiers, and, thus, most of the research has focused on direct accuracy maximization strategies rather than on calibration. However, non-calibrated classifiers are problematic in applications where the reliability associated with a prediction must be taken into account. In these applications, a sensible use of the classifier must be based on the reliability of its predictions, and, thus, the classifier must be well calibrated. In this paper we show that lazy associative classifiers (LAC) are well calibrated using an MDL-based entropy minimization method. We investigate important applications where such characteristics (i.e., accuracy and calibration) are relevant, and we demonstrate empirically that LAC outperforms other classifiers, such as SVMs, Naive Bayes, and Decision Trees (even after these classifiers are calibrated). Additional highlights of LAC include the ability to incorporate reliable predictions for improving training, and the ability to refrain from doubtful predictions.

Automatic personality perception is the prediction of personality that others attribute to a person in a given situation. The aim of automatic personality perception is to forecast the behaviour of the speaker perceived by the listener from nonverbal behavior. Extroversion, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Openness are the speaker traits used for personality assessment. In this work, a speaker trait prediction approach for automatic personality assessment is proposed. This approach is based on modeling the relationship between speech signal and personality traits using spectral features. The experiments are achieved over the SSPNet Personality Corpus. The Frequency Domain Linear Prediction and Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient features are extracted for the prediction of speaker traits. The classification is done using Instance based k-Nearest neighbor and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. The experimental results show that k-Nearest Neighbor classifier outperforms SVM classifier. The classification accuracy is between 90 and 100%.  相似文献

The early detection of diabetic retinopathy is crucial for preventing blindness. However, it is time-consuming to analyze fundus images manually, especially considering the increasing amount of medical images. In this paper, we propose an automatic diabetic retinopathy screening method using color fundus images. Our approach consists of three main components: edge-guided candidate microaneurysms detection, candidates classification using mixed features, and diabetic retinopathy prediction using fused features of image level and lesion level. We divide a screening task into two sub-classification tasks: 1) verifying candidate microaneurysms by a naive Bayes classifier; 2) predicting diabetic retinopathy using a support vector machine classifier. Our approach can effectively alleviate the imbalanced class distribution problem. We evaluate our method on two public databases: Lariboisìere and Messidor, resulting in an area under the curve of 0.908 on Lariboisìere and 0.832 on Messidor. These scores demonstrate the advantages of our approach over the existing methods.

In this paper, we present a method of Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI) through 3D air-writing. Our proposed method includes a natural way of interaction without pen and paper. The online texts are drawn on air by 3D gestures using fingertip within the field of view of a Leap motion sensor. The texts consist of single stroke only. Hence gaps between adjacent words are usually absent. This makes the system different as compared to the conventional 2D writing using pen and paper. We have collected a dataset that comprises with 320 Latin sentences. We have used a heuristic to segment 3D words from sentences. Subsequently, we present a methodology to segment continuous 3D strokes into lines of texts by finding large gaps between the end and start of the lines. This is followed by segmentation of the text lines into words. In the next phase, a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based classifier is used to recognize 3D sequences of segmented words. We have used dynamic as well as simple features for classification. We have recorded an overall accuracy of 80.3 % in word segmentation. Recognition accuracies of 92.73 % and 90.24 % have been recorded when tested with dynamic and simple features, respectively. The results show that the Leap motion device can be a low-cost but useful solution for inputting text naturally as compared to conventional systems. In future, this may be extended such that the system can successfully work on cluttered gestures.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a new approach for single object segmentation in 3D images. Our method improves the classical geodesic active surface model. It greatly simplifies the model initialization and naturally avoids local minima by incorporating user extra information into the segmentation process. The initialization procedure is reduced to introducing 3D curves into the image. These curves are supposed to belong to the surface to extract and thus, also constitute user given information. Hence, our model finds a surface that has these curves as boundary conditions and that minimizes the integral of a potential function that corresponds to the image features. Our goal is achieved by using globally minimal paths. We approximate the surface to extract by a discrete network of paths. Furthermore, an interpolation method is used to build a mesh or an implicit representation based on the information retrieved from the network of paths. Our paper describes a fast construction obtained by exploiting the Fast Marching algorithm and a fast analytical interpolation method. Moreover, a Level set method can be used to refine the segmentation when higher accuracy is required. The algorithm has been successfully applied to 3D medical images and synthetic images.  相似文献

In this work we describe a new statistically-based methodology to organize and retrieve images of natural scenes by combining feature extraction, automatic clustering, automatic indexing and classification techniques. Our proposal belongs to the content-based image retrieval (CBIR) category. Our goal is to retrieve images from an image database by their content. The methodology combines randomly extracted points for feature extraction. The describing features are the mean, the standard deviation and the homogeneity (from the co-occurrence matrix) of a sub-image extracted from the three color channels (HSI). A K-means algorithm and a 1-NN classifier are used to build an indexed database. Three databases of images of natural scenes are used during the training and testing processes. One of the advantages of our proposal is that the images are not labeled manually for their retrieval. The performance of our framework is shown through several experimental results, including a comparison with several classifiers and comparison with related works, achieving up to 100% good recognition. Additionally, our proposal includes scene retrieval.  相似文献

A software system Gel Analysis System for Epo (GASepo) has been developed within an international WADA project. As recent WADA criteria of rEpo positivity are based on identification of each relevant object (band) in Epo images, development of suitable methods of image segmentation and object classification were needed for the GASepo system. In the paper we address two particular problems: segmentation of disrupted bands and classification of the segmented objects into three or two classes. A novel band projection operator is based on convenient object merging measures and their discrimination analysis using specifically generated training set of segmented objects. A weighted ranks classification method is proposed, which is new in the field of image classification. It is based on ranks of the values of a specific criterial function. The weighted ranks classifiers proposed in our paper have been evaluated on real samples of segmented objects of Epo images and compared to three selected well-known classifiers: Fisher linear classifier, Support Vector Machine, and Multilayer Perceptron.

Our goal is to develop a complete and automatic scanning strategy with minimum prior information about the object shape. We aim to establish a methodology for the automation of the 3D digitization process. The paper presents a novel approach to determine the Next Best View (NBV) for an efficient reconstruction of highly accurate 3D models. Our method is based on the classification of the acquired surfaces into Well Visible and Barely Visible combined with a best view selection algorithm based on mean shift, which avoids unreachable positions. Our approach is applicable to all kinds of range sensors. To prove the efficiency and the robustness of our method, test objects are first scanned manually by experts in 3D digitization from the VECTEO company. The comparison of results between manual and automatic scanning shows that our method is very efficient and faster than trained experts. The 3D models of the different objects are obtained with a strongly reduced number of acquisitions while moving efficiently the ranging device. The obtained results prove the effectiveness and the versatility of our 3D reconstruction approach for industrial applications.  相似文献

In the past years sophisticated automatic segmentation algorithms for various medical image segmentation problems have been developed. However, there are always cases where automatic algorithms fail to provide an acceptable segmentation. In these cases the user needs efficient segmentation editing tools, a problem which has not received much attention in research. We give a comprehensive overview on segmentation editing for three‐dimensional (3D) medical images. For segmentation editing in two‐dimensional (2D) images, we discuss a sketch‐based approach where the user modifies the segmentation in the contour domain. Based on this 2D interface, we present an image‐based as well as an image‐independent method for intuitive and efficient segmentation editing in 3D in the context of tumour segmentation in computed tomography (CT). Our editing tools have been evaluated on a database containing 1226 representative liver metastases, lung nodules and lymph nodes of different shape, size and image quality. In addition, we have performed a qualitative evaluation with radiologists and technical experts, proving the efficiency of our tools.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a method for change detection in high-resolution remote-sensing images by means of level set evolution and support vector machine (SVM) classification, which combined both the pixel-level method and the object-level method. Both pixel-based change features and object-based ones are extracted to improve the discriminability between the changed class and the unchanged class. At the pixel level, the change detection problem is formulated as a segmentation issue using level set evolution in the difference images. At the object level, potential training samples are selected from the segmentation results without manual intervention into the SVM classifier. Thereafter, the final changes are obtained by combining the pixel-based changes and the object-based changes. A chief advantage of our approach is being able to select appropriate samples for SVM classifier training. Furthermore, our proposed method helps improve the accuracy and the degree of automation. We systematically evaluate it with various Satellite Pour l’Observation de la Terre (SPOT) 5 images and aerial images. Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of our proposed method.  相似文献

Due to the presence of complicated topological and residual features, the segmentation of medical imagery is a difficult problem. In this paper, an automated approach to clinical image segmentation is presented. The processing of these images in our approach is divided into learning and segmentation stages to facilitate the application of principal component analysis with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. During the initial learning stage, representative images are chosen to represent typical input images. These images are segmented using a variational level set method driven by a modeled energy functional designed to delineate the pathological characteristics of the images. Then a window-based feature extraction is applied to these segmented images. Principal component analysis is applied to these extracted features and the results are used to train an SVM classifier. After training the SVM, any time a clinical image needs to be segmented, it is simply classified with the trained SVM. By the proposed method, we take the strengths of both machine learning and the variational level set method while limiting their weaknesses to achieve automatic and fast clinical segmentation. To test the proposed system, both chest (thoracic) computed tomography (CT) scans (2D and 3D) and dental X-rays are used. Promising results are demonstrated and analyzed. The proposed method can be used during pre-processing for automatic computer-aided diagnosis.  相似文献
