Diadromus pulchellus, a monophagous parasitoid of the leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella, a specialist of plants in the Allium genus, was raised on four series of chrysalids coming from four diets: leek leaves (LL), an artificial diet with (D + L) or without (D – L) leek powder, and an artificial diet plus 1% methyl-cysteinesulfoxide, a precursor of characteristic sulfur volatiles (D + P). Various behavioral and physiological responses by the parent parasitoids and the progeny were studied. No differences were observed in behavior among the four series. The higher precursor concentration observed in LL and in D + P than in D + L and D – L was responsible for a lower emergence ratio and higher egg production in LL and D + P. The consequences of these variations are discussed in relation to narrowness of the tritrophic system. The fact that sulfur volatiles favorable to behavior arise from nonvolatile sulfur precursors, having negative effects on physiology, can also contribute to the maintenance of the system.  相似文献

To elucidate the identity of the volatile compounds that could be involved in the searching behavior of the parasitoidCotesia rubecula Marshall (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), the volatiles released by cabbage and frass of Lepidoptera feeding on cabbage were collected and analyzed using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. The volatiles emitted by intact cabbage were -pinene, -pinene, myrcene, 1,8-cineole,n-hexyl acetate,cis-3-hexen-1-yl acetate, and dimethyl trisulfide. Mechanical damage on an intact plant induced the release of two more compounds,trans-2-hexenal and 1-methoxy-3-methylene-2-pentanone. Current feeding by larvae ofPieris rapae L. (Pieridae) induced the plant to release all the compounds released after mechanical damage and additionally 4-methyl-3-pentenal and allyl isothiocyanate. Current feeding by larvae ofPlutella xylostella L. (Plutellidae) induced the plant to release all the compounds present after mechanical damage and additionally allyl isothiocyanate. The volatiles emitted after feeding by the lepidopterans had ceased were the same as those emitted by cabbage damaged by mechanical means. The blend of volatiles emitted by frass was comprised of plant chemicals, mainly sulfur compounds. Frass ofP. rapae emitted allyl isothiocyanate, methyl isothiocyanate, methyl propyl sulfide, dimethyl trisulfide,S-methyl methane thiosulfinate, 4-methyl-3-pentenal,trans-2-hexenal, and 2,3-dihydro-4-methyl furan. Frass ofP. xylostella emitted only dimethyl trisulfide andS-methyl methane thiosulfinate. The blend of volatiles emitted by frass is herbivore-species specific.  相似文献

Four major volatile components emitted from flowers ofAbelia grandiflora were identified based on retention time using two capillary columns of different polarities and electron impact mass spectrometry. These are phenylacetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, 2-phenylethanol, and benzyl alcohol. A blend of these compounds was as effective as a cluster of flowers in stimulating upwind flight by maleTrichoplusia ni to the source in a wind-tunnel test. Phenylacetaldehyde or 2-phenylethanol were each as effective as the complete blend in stimulating source location by male moths. Attraction to a source of the synthetic blend was demonstrated in virgin males and females and mated males and females, but virgin moths of both sexes were more likely than mated moths to complete the sequence of behavioral responses necessary to locate the odor source.  相似文献

Olfactory responses of the cereal stemborer parasitoid Cotesia sesamiae to volatiles emitted by gramineous host and nonhost plants of the stemborers were studied in a Y-tube olfactometer. The host plants were maize (Zea mays) and sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor), while the nonhost plant was molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora). In single-choice tests, females of C. sesamiae chose volatiles from infested and uninfested host plants and molasses grass over volatiles from the control (soil). In dual-choice tests, the wasp preferred volatiles from infested host plants to those from uninfested host plants. There was no discrimination between molasses grass volatiles and those of uninfested maize, uninfested sorghum, or infested maize. The wasp preferred sorghum volatiles over maize. Combining uninfested maize or sorghum with molasses grass did not make volatiles from the combination more attractive as compared to only uninfested host plants. Infested maize alone was as attractive as when combined with molasses grass. Infested sorghum was preferred over its combination with molasses grass. Local growth conditions of the molasses grasses influenced attractiveness to the parasitoids. Volatiles from Thika molasses grass were attractive, while those from Mbita molasses grass were not. Growing the Thika molasses grass in Mbita rendered it unattractive and vice versa with the Mbita molasses grass. This is a case of the same genotype expressing different phenotypes due to environmental factors.  相似文献

Apple volatiles from whole Red Delicious and Red Astrachan apples were found to be attractive to sexually mature apple maggot flies,Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), in wind tunnel bioassays. Extracted volatiles elicited directed upwind movement towards the source and significantly increased the number of male and female flies arriving at the source. A behaviorally active fraction was obtained from crude extract by gas-liquid chromatography and assayed in two types of wind tunnels and by electroantennography. The major components in this fraction, identified by chemical derivatization reactions and GLC-mass spectrometry, were hexyl acetate, (E)-2-hexen-1-yl acetate, butyl 2-methylbutanoate, propyl hexanoate, hexyl propanoate, butyl hexanoate, and hexyl butanoate in a 352 81252810 ratio. Synthetics of the identified compounds and the natural extract elicited similar behavioral and EAG responses. Electroantennograms were recorded from an herbivore,Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and a parasitoid,Microplitis demolitor (Wilkinson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), exposed to 5-through 12-carbon aliphatic compounds of several chemical classes. The response of the herbivore was higher for the 6- and/or 7-carbon hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, and ketones. The response of the parasitoid was higher for the 7- and 8-carbon hydrocarbons, aldehydes, and ketones. Responses of the herbivore and the parasitoid to alcohols were similar. Both the herbivore and the parasitoid were most sensitive to aldehydes and ketones, and least sensitive to alcohols and hydrocarbons. Responses of the parasitoid to hydrocarbons, aldehydes, and ketones were numerically higher than those of the herbivore. The adaptive significance of differential olfactory sensitivity between the herbivore and the natural enemy is discussed in relation to tri-trophic interactions among plants, herbivores, and natural enemies.  相似文献

Ethanol, methanol, acetone, and acetaldehyde—chemicals identified in the inner bark of living trees—were used to bait vane traps placed in crowns of oak trees in Connecticut. Ethanol-baited traps caught more cerambycid, scolytid, and clerid beetles than unbaited traps. Buprestidae were not attracted to ethanol. Acetaldehyde and acetone were not attractive to any family. A mixture of ethanol, methanol, and acetaldehyde was no more attractive than ethanol alone. The vane traps were very effective at catching Cerambycidae and Scolytidae, but ineffective compared to sticky panels at catching Buprestidae.  相似文献

Trapping experiments will be described in which standard workplace monitoring devices were used to collect samples over the dynamic mill, Brabender, and single screw laboratory extruder. Additionally, the results of static (unsheared) heating on clear PVC compound and finished goods with collection of emitted organic vapors are compared to the dynamic case. The chemical mediation of host-finding was investigated for the dusky sap beetle,Carpophilus lugubris Murray. GC-MS analysis of the headspace volatiles above whole-wheat bread dough inoculated with baker's yeast, a substrate previously determined to be an effective attractant, revealed seven major components in the following order of decreasing concentration: ethanol, acetaldehyde, 2-methylpropanol, 3-methylbutanol, propanol, 2-methylbutanol, and ethyl acetate. Solutions of these seven compounds blended so as to mimic the odor of whole-wheat bread dough elicited upwind orientation from 1.8 m in a wind tunnel byC. lugubris at a level comparable to that elicited by the bread dough. A series of bioassays investigating the role of individual components from the synthetic blend determined that all seven compounds contributed to behavioral activity; however, the simplest blend evoking attraction comparable to bread dough included acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, 2-methylpropanol, and 3-methylbutanol. Of these compounds, acetaldehyde was essential, ethyl acetate was interchangeable with ethanol or partially replaceable with propanol, and 2-methylpropanol and 3-methylbutanol were partially replaceable with a combination of the other alcohols. Headspace volatiles above aseptic or fungus-inoculated tomato, banana, sweet corn, and strawberry were also qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. This study suggests thatC. lugubris locates its food sources by response to variable blends of common volatile constituents of plants and fungi.  相似文献

Incorporation of certain phytoecdysones (ecdysterone, polypodine B, and ponasterone A) into a semisynthetic artificial diet induces pathophysiological effects in larvae of the leek-moth (Acrolepiopsis assectella Zell., Acrolepiidae). The effects include lethality of the newly hatched, first-instar larvae; special ecdysial failures associated with the appearance of larvae with two head capsules; and developmental anomalies during metamorphosis. The effective range of dietary ecdysteroid, as evaluated by larval mortality, varies from 25 to 250 ppm. The EC50 value is 100 ppm for polypodine B and 130 ppm for ecdysterone. The dietary effects of the phytoecdysones are similar to the previously observed effects caused by the dried flowers, but not leaves, of the leek plant. However, the active compound of the leek flowers is a saponin.  相似文献

Malondialdehyde (MDA) derivatives occur as normal constituents of rat and human urine. In a previous study, it was found that MDA excretion in rats is responsive to MDA intake and to certain factors that increase lipid peroxidation in vivo: vitamin E deficiency, iron administration and a high concentration of cod liver oil (CLO) fatty acids in the tissues. In the present study, the effect on MDA excretion of several additional dietary and endogeneous factors was evaluated. The composition of dietary fatty acids had a major influence on MDA excretion in fed animals, being highest for animals fed n−3 fatty acids (20∶5 and 22∶6) from CLO, intermediate for those fed n−6 (18∶2) acids from corn oil (CO) and lowest for those fed saturated acids from hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO). Diet was the main source of urinary MDA in all groups. Fasting produced a marked increase in urinary MDA, which tended to be higher in rats previously fed CLO. Fasting MDA excretion was not affected by the level of CO in the diet (5, 10 or 15%), indicating that feeding n−6 acids does not increase lipid peroxidation in vivo. Adrenocorticotropic hormone and epinephrine administration increased urinary MDA, further indicating that lipolysis either releases fatty acid peroxides from the tissues or increases the susceptibility of mobilized fatty acids to peroxidation. A decrease in fasting MDA excretion was observed in rats previously fed a high level of antioxidants (vitamin E+BHT+vitamin C) vs a normal level of vitamin E. MDA excretion increased following adriamycin and CCl4 administration. No increase was observed following short-term feeding of a choline-methionine-deficient diet, which has been reported to increase peroxidation of rat liver nuclear lipids. This study provides further evidience that urinary MDA can serve as a useful indicator of lipid peroxidation in vivo when peroxidation of dietary lipids is precluded. Males of the Central American stink bug species,Euschistus obscurus, produce an attractant pheromone composed of a blend of compounds characteristic of North AmericanEuschistus spp. and the South American soybean pest,E. heros. The range ofE. obscurus extends into the southern United States, the species is easy to rear, and males produce an exceptionally large quantity of pheromone (>0.5µg/day/male). These factors madeE. obscurus useful for characterizing the novel pheromone components ofE. heros without importing this pest species into the United States.Euschistus obscurus males produce methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate (61 %) in abundance, which is characteristic of North American species, and methyl 2,6,10-trimethyltridecanoate (27%), the main male-specific ester ofE. heros. The chirality ofEuschistus spp. methyl-branched esters, and field activity of synthetic formulations, remain to be determined.  相似文献

The sex pheromone glands ofPlusia chalcites release, dodecyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate, 11-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-8-tridecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate. A combination of capillary GC, GC-MS, and dimethyl disulfide derivatization enabled a rigorous identification of all these compounds, some of which were previously found in gland extracts. Bioassays in a flight tunnel showed that a ternary blend of (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate elicited directed flights from 85 to 100% of the males tested and elicited copulation attempts, at the end of the flights, from 44 to 74% of the males tested. This blend was equal in activity to the natural gland extract. Addition of the other acetates had only a slight influence on the activity of this mixture. Substitution of either (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate or (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate in this blend by 11-dodecenyl acetate gave two ternary mixtures which also elicited high levels of courtship activity, almost as high as that of the original blend. Feeding leek moths on an artificial diet has shown that dimethyl and dipropyl disulfides and methyl-propyl disulfide found in frass arise from sulfur compounds specific toAllium. The addition of either propyl or methyl disulfide or their precursors to the diet leads to appearance of the three disulfides in the frass. Seven volatile compounds identified from the headspace of whole wheat bread dough were investigated for their role in attractingGlischrochilus quadrisignatus andG. fasciatus in the field. Traps baited with either whole wheat bread dough or a synthetic seven-component bread dough odor caught similar numbers of these beetles, suggesting that the seven-compound combination could simulate the behavioral effect of bread dough. A series of trials using traps baited with various combinations of these chemicals showed that five compounds were significantly active in attractingG. quadrisignatus andG. fasciatus, but not all were essential for maximum response. The simplest blend eliciting a level of response comparable to the seven-component combination included ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and racemic 2-methylbutanol, of which ethyl acetate, ethanol, and acetaldehyde were essential and 2-methylbutanol was replaceable with 2-methylpropanol forG. quadrisignatus attraction. Ethyl acetate and ethanol were essential for comparable attraction ofG. fasciatus. The chemical mediation of food finding in G.quadrisignatus andG. fasciatus is discussed in the context of volatile blends characterized for other nitidulid species.  相似文献

A lure based on the proportional composition of monoterpenes inD. micans larval frass and deployed in Theysohn slot traps was highly attractive toR. grandis released in the field. The relative response to frass and lure was consistent over a range of doses, and behavior close to traps baited with either lure or frass appeared to be similar. The monoterpenes, formulated with antioxidant, appear to be stable over several weeks when released from proprietary reservoir and wick “air fresheners.” The lure may be of value in monitoring predator populations.  相似文献

Volatiles released from corn seedlings on which beet armyworm larvae were feeding were attractive to females of the parasitoid,Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson), in flight tunnel bioassays. Analyses of the collected volatiles revealed the consistent presence of 11 compounds in significant amounts. They were: (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)- 3-hexen-1-yl acetate, linalool, (3E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, indole, -trans-bergamotene, (E)--farnesene, (E)-nerolidol, and (3E,7E)-4,8,12-trimethyl-1, 3,7,ll-tridecatetraene. A synthetic blend of all 11 compounds was slightly less attractive to parasitoid females than an equivalent natural blend. However, preflight experience with the synthetic blend instead of experience with a regular plant-host complex significantly improved the response to the synthetic blend. Our results suggest thatC. marginiventris females, in their search for hosts, use a blend of airborne semiochemicals emitted by plants on which their hosts feed. The response to a particular odor blend dramatically increases after a parasitoid experiences it in association with contacting host by-products.  相似文献

We proved that the leafminer moth Phyllonorycter emberizaepenella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) reproduces by parthenogenesis of the thelytoky type. Despite a complete absence of males, parthenogenetically reproducing females diurnally demonstrated the calling posture normally used for releasing signaling compounds. Two compounds, which we collected from a calling female, were identified as potential sex pheromone components: (8E,10E)-8,10-tetradecadienyl acetate and (8E,10E)-8,10-tetradecadienol, the latter occurring only in trace amounts. In field experiments, no males were attracted to traps baited with either the potential sex pheromone or with virgin females. Both the pattern of behavior and the chemical characteristics of the pheromone of Ph. emberizaepenella species were similar to those known for Lepidoptera with the usual amphimictic mode of reproduction. Theoretical speculations that in thelytoky, where there is no need to find a sexual partner, the individuals would obtain certain advantages due to reduction in their sexual behavior, were, thus, not confirmed for Ph. emberizaepenella.  相似文献

Peroxidation of lipids results in the formation of a number of aldehydic and other carbonyl-containing secondary degradation products. The effect of peroxidative stimuli mediated by vitamin E deficiency, a diet high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (containing cod liver oil), and carbon tetrachloride administration on urinary excretion of a number of lipophilic aldehydes and related carbonyl compounds was examined in rats. These secondary lipid peroxidation products were measured as 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives. All three treatments increased urinary excretion of secondary lipid peroxidation products, although the pattern of excretion of these products varied somewhat among the treatments. Significant increases were found in butanal, hexanal, octanal. butan-2-one, pentan-2-one, hex-2-enal, hepta-2,4-dienal, 4-hydroxyhex-2-enal, 4-hydroxyoct-2-enal, 4-hydroxynon-2-enal, and a number of unidentified carbonyl compounds. These results suggest that urinary excretion of these lipophilic secondary lipid peroxidation products is a useful and noninvasive marker of whole-body lipid peroxidation.  相似文献
