Highest injury rates within the New Zealand forest sector are reported for the logging operation, with up to 30% of logging injuries occurring during the felling task. This paper reports findings from a detailed task and job safety analysis of the motor-manual (chainsaw) felling task, and an analysis of New Zealand Accident Reporting Scheme data for logging injuries for the five-year period, 1996-2000. Key safety factors, including physical hazards and potential errors and violations associated with the felling task, were determined from the task and job safety analysis, along with possible adverse consequences and potential solutions for reducing injury risk. The potential for injury among inexperienced fellers was noted, as felling safety was dependent upon appropriate assessment of hazards and good judgement in respect of decisions regarding the felling of trees. The analysis of some 351 reported felling injury cases allowed identification of high-risk task elements, common injury initiating events and temporal and logger population injury patterns. Findings from the two methods of analysis were triangulated where possible to produce a better understanding of key risk areas. The potential risk associated with inexperienced employees, who incurred a high proportion of felling injuries, and the need for good judgement and decision making for different aspects of the felling task were particularly noted.  相似文献

Falls precipitated by slipping are listed among the leading causes of occupational injuries. Several factors may influence the risk of slips and falls, including perception of surface conditions. The current research examined the relationship between perceptions of slipperiness and slip distance at heel strike. The investigation compared objective and subjective measures for 31 participants ranging in age from 19 to 67 years old. Subjective slipperiness ratings for several floor surface and walking velocity conditions were obtained. Small slips were not generally perceived, but a uniform slip distance threshold could not be identified due to the large variability in ratings. The Pearson correlation coefficient between slip distance and subjective ratings for slides (30-100mm) was r=-0.17. Results indicate that subjective ratings should be used cautiously as a measure of slipperiness, partially due to possible underestimation of slipperiness and the variability in perceptions.  相似文献

Many studies have identified personal factors associated with occupational sitting time, but none of them focused on the longest episode of occupational sitting (hereby referred to as continuous occupational sitting time) nor considered whether workplace support for health moderates the associations between these factors and continuous occupational sitting time. This study aimed to identify personal factors predicting continuous occupational sitting time and ascertained whether workplace support for health moderates the associations between these factors and continuous occupational sitting time. A cross-sectional design and an adapted hierarchical linear regression analysis was employed. The participants were 991 employees of public and private organizations in Accra, Ghana. Results were presented with hierarchical linear regression analysis. The ultimate predictors of continuous occupational sitting time at a minimum of p < 0.05 include age, job type, and job income. Workplace support for health significantly moderated the primary associations, which means that workplace support for health altered the strength of the associations between all predictors (except tenure) and continuous occupational sitting time. This study concludes that there are inequalities in continuous occupational sitting time between employee groups that can be modified by workplace support for health.  相似文献

The primary aims of this study were to establish a client injury baseline for the New Zealand adventure tourism and adventure sport sector, and to examine patterns and trends in claims for injury during participation in adventure activities. Content analysis of narrative text data for compensated injuries occurring in a place for recreation and sport over a 12-month period produced over 15,000 cases involving adventure tourism and adventure sport. As found in previous studies in New Zealand, highest claim counts were observed for activities that are often undertaken independently, rather than commercially. Horse riding, tramping, surfing and mountain biking were found to have highest claim counts, while hang gliding/paragliding/parasailing and jet boating injuries had highest claim costs, suggesting greatest injury severity. Highest claim incidence was observed for horse riding, with female claimants over-represented for this activity. Younger male claimants comprised the largest proportion of adventure injuries, and falls were the most common injury mechanism.  相似文献

This paper presents a critical review and analysis of issues in implementing electronic data and information sharing frameworks for organisations involved in response activities during disaster. An implementation focused approach is used to understand end‐user needs and develop tools that meet their operational requirements. A case study of New Zealand roading organisations examines how information is currently shared both within and between organisations to support crisis decision‐making, and the potential benefits and implications of enhanced data and information sharing frameworks. Preliminary results show that considerable performance gains in response activities during disasters can be achieved provided technology is designed to work with and enhance existing operating structures.  相似文献

Occupational driving has often been associated with a high prevalence of back pain. The factors that contribute to cause the pain are diverse and might include prolonged sitting, poor postures, exposure to whole-body vibration and other non-driving factors such as heavy lifting, poor diet or other psychosocial factors. In Europe, truck drivers are likely to be considered an 'at risk' group according to the Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive and therefore risks will need to be reduced. This questionnaire-based study set out to examine the relationship between musculoskeletal problems and possible risk factors for HGV truck drivers to help prioritize action aimed at risk reduction. Truck drivers (n = 192) completed an occupational questionnaire with two measures of vibration exposure (weekly hours and distance driven). Items on manual handling, relevant ergonomics factors and musculoskeletal problems were also included. Reported exposures to vibration ranged from 12 to 85 h per week, with a mean of 43.8 h. Distances driven ranged from 256 to 6400 km (mean 2469 km). Most of the respondents (81%) reported some musculoskeletal pain during the previous 12 months and 60% reported low back pain. Contrary to expectations, vibration exposures were significantly lower among those who suffered musculoskeletal symptoms when distance was used as an exposure measure. Manual handling and subjective ratings of seat discomfort were associated with reported musculoskeletal problems.  相似文献

Musculoskeletal disorders are one of leading causes of work related ill health and sickness absence. Those drive as part of their job may be at particular risk, with evidence suggesting that prolonged exposure to driving is associated with increased absence from work due to low back pain. Business drivers often work away from a traditional office environment. Such mobile working may pose greater risks to occupational health due to increased ergonomic risks, for example working from the car, longer working hours and a lack of concern amongst drivers about health and safety. It has been suggested that occupational health practices have not adapted to meet the needs of peripatetic workers. The current study explored how occupational health services are delivered to business drivers. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with a sample of 31 stakeholders in 4 organisations. Respondents included, health and safety professionals, occupational health nurses, fleet managers and high mileage business drivers. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using ‘Template Analysis’. The data revealed that, within these organisations, the provision of occupational health services was often fragmented and drivers and other key stakeholders were often unaware of the existing systems within their organisations. The peripatetic nature of business drivers meant that they were difficult for occupational health teams to reach. The paper concludes by presenting recommendations for occupational health professionals and researchers engaged with improving the health of peripatetic workers, namely that occupational health policies should be integrated in company strategy and widely disseminated to drivers and those with responsibility for managing their occupational health provision.  相似文献

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Health and safety hazards and risk factors in the workplace are associated with occupational CVD, though inconsistent evidence of causal associations represents a knowledge gap. The assessment of physical load on the cardiovascular system in relation to work different risk factors and occupational groups is necessary, if preventative measures for occupational CVD are to be better tailored to workers’ needs. The pertinent literature reports the use of different objective and subjective metrics to evaluate the cardiovascular load (CVL). We aimed to identify how cardiovascular stress is assessed in the workplace and to bring together related evidence-based recommendations for preventative measures. Hence, we systematically searched the Google Scholar database for corresponding publications to a) gather metrics used to assess CVL, b) summarize the related risk factors investigated, c) report the occupational groups and activities targeted in these studies, and d) compile recommendations resulting from these studies. The majority of studies reported objective measures, mostly Relative Heart Rate. The identified risk factors included work environment factors, general job features (such as the number of working hours), task-related factors and individual characteristics of the worker. Most studies focused on the industrial sector, namely, the manufacturing industry and construction were the two most frequent occupational groups, due to high exposure to risk factors. Few evidence-based recommendations were identified, though guidelines to promote safety and productivity were proposed. Our results encourage further research on CVL, occupational risk and CVD.  相似文献

Although musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) are common worldwide, little is known about its prevalence amongst the working population in relation to gender, age, and occupational/industrial group. This paper describes the prevalence of MSS in a sample of 3003 men and women aged 20-64 randomly selected from the New Zealand Electoral Roll. MSS experienced during the previous 12 months in 10 body regions was assessed in telephone interviews using a modified version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). MSS prevalence was 92% (for any body region). The highest prevalence was for low back (54%), neck (43%), and shoulders (42%). Females reported a statistically significantly higher prevalence of MSS in the neck, shoulders, wrist/hands, upper back and hips/thighs/buttocks regions compared to males while males reported more symptoms of the elbows, low back and knees. There were no statistically significant differences in prevalence among age groups. In general, participants with heavy physical workloads had significantly higher prevalence of symptoms in most body regions than those with light physical workloads although women with light physical workloads reported more neck symptoms. The study indicates that the New Zealand working population has a high prevalence of MSS and that exposure in the workplace plays a role.

Relevance to industry

The findings of this study imply that efforts to reduce MSS in the workplace should focus on females and employees with high physical workloads.  相似文献

This study investigated risk factors associated with back pain in 245 New Zealand intermediate school children aged 11-14 years in a cross-sectional survey, using a self-completion questionnaire for demographic details, pain prevalence, psychosocial parameters, school and leisure activities and family characteristics. The strongest relationships were between back pain and common childhood complaints (stomach ache, headache and sore throats) (p < 0.01) and psychosocial factors (conduct and hyperactivity) (p < 0.01). For physical factors, there was a significant relationship between neck and low back pain and attributes of chairs. Low back pain was significantly related to low desk height (as reported by students) (p < 0.05). School bag weight was not significantly related to low back pain but carrying the bag on one shoulder was (p < 0.05). It is concluded that, amongst these intermediate school children, psychological, social and emotional factors had a stronger relationship with back pain than physical factors. STATEMENT OF RELEVANCE: This study investigated risk factors associated with back pain amongst New Zealand intermediate school children. It showed that psychological, social and emotional factors may have a stronger relationship with back pain than physical factors.  相似文献

This study evaluates the reliability of self-assessment as a measure of computer competence. This evaluation is carried out in response to recent research which has employed self-reported ratings as the sole indicator of students’ computer competence. To evaluate the reliability of self-assessed computer competence, the scores achieved by students in self-assessed computer competence tests are compared with scores achieved in objective tests. The results reveal a statistically significantly over-estimation of computer competence among the students surveyed. Furthermore, reported pre-university computer experience in terms of home and school use and formal IT education does not affect this result. The findings call into question the validity of using self-assessment as a measure of computer competence. More generally, the study also provides an up-to-date picture of self-reported computer usage and IT experience among pre-university students from New Zealand and South-east Asia and contrasts these findings with those from previous research.  相似文献

Abstract

Two thousand observations on 47 radar sectors in Boston and New York were used to determine the principal behavioural stressors in the air traffic control environment. Predictor variables included peak traffic. mean airspeed, sector area, sector type, radio-communication time, and theoretically derived control load factors.

Expert observers rated the degree of activity and behavioural arousal of ATCs working the 47 radar sectors at the same time the objective measures were made. These ‘pace’ ratings were significantly related to peak traffic count and duration of radio-communications.

The control load factors were not related to behavioural responses. Statistical analyses indicated several refinements for the definition and measurement of the control load factors, For example, airspace control load was reliably estimated by sector type and number of transitioning planes, while co-ordination control load was most appropriately estimated by duration of radio-communications

These results suggested that estimations of workload may be made by a relatively few objective measures, and that at least one estimate of individual's behavioural responses, i.e.. pace ratings, can be predicted by peak traffic counts.  相似文献

Multiple linear regression models of leaf nitrogen concentrations were developed from measured leaf values of selected native New Zealand plant species and spectral absorption obtained from laboratory NIR spectrometry (NIRS 6500). Two sets of equations were produced from samples that were from either dried and ground or fresh and intact foliage. Canopy nitrogen was predicted from these laboratory-derived equations and applied to GER 2600 spectroradiometer data collected above small plant canopies (r2 = 0.65 to 0.77). Reflectance data from the NIRS 6500 and GER 2600 were not directly comparable, therefore calibration of predicted canopy nitrogen values was necessary to place the predicted nitrogen in the observed range of values. Highest accuracy occurred where wavelengths selected in the laboratory analysis were not 'attributable' to nitrogen bonds rather to complex carbohydrate compounds (e.g. 2160 nm). In addition, as laboratory equations were derived from small sample sizes, canopy nitrogen was predicted with greatest accuracy when only a single 'attributable' wavelength was utilised.  相似文献

This paper looks at the ICT (information and communication technology) curriculum in New Zealand secondary schools and gendered participation patterns in different specialist ICT subjects. New Zealand has a permissive ICT curriculum, comprising a variety of subjects and characterised by choice and variation in the curriculum in practice at the local level. The data that are reported include results of (i) a national questionnaire survey of secondary schools, and (ii) a qualitative case study conducted in a large, co-educational New Zealand secondary school and involving classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students. It is suggested that the permissiveness of the curriculum, which ostensibly caters for the needs of students by providing choices, may, in some circumstances, effectively reinforce gender stereotypes relating to computer interests and practices. This is a paradox of choice. Questions are raised about the nature of the ICT curriculum in New Zealand and how it may contribute to or challenge gender stereotypes, future curriculum developments and, more broadly, how we can account for persistent gendered participation patterns in ICT subjects in schools.  相似文献

Slip, trip and fall (STF) incidents, particularly falls from a height, are a leading cause of injury in the New Zealand residential construction industry. The most common origins of falls from a height in this sector are ladders, scaffolding and roofs, while slipping is the most frequent fall initiating event category. The study aimed to provide detailed information on construction industry STF risk factors for high-risk tasks, work equipment and environments, as identified from an earlier analysis of STF claims data, together with information to be used in the development of interventions to reduce STF risk in New Zealand residential construction. The study involved the use of both incident-centred and incident-independent methods of investigation, including detailed follow-up investigations of incidents and observations and interviews with workers on construction sites, to provide data on a wide range of risk factors. A large number of risk factors for residential construction STFs were identified, including factors related to the work environment, tasks and the use and availability of appropriate height work equipment. The different methods of investigation produced complementary information on factors related to equipment design and work organization, which underlie some of the site conditions and work practices identified as key risk factors for residential construction STFs. A conceptual systems model of residential construction STF risk is presented.  相似文献

This study tries to shed some light on what happens to usability and occupational health issues in a bespoke software development project. Usability is an essential quality in software, in particular in a work context where poor usability and other risk factors related to the software and computers may cause health problems. We have interviewed a number of software developers, usability people and users about their attitudes to and practices for integrating usability and users' health concerns in software development. The interviews were conducted in two Swedish organisations with in-house development of bespoke software. Our main conclusion is that several factors combine to push usability and occupational health matters aside, some of which are attitudes to usability and users' health issues, unclear responsibilities, poor support for user-centeredness and usability in software development models, ineffective user participation and usability and users' health being ignored or forgotten in decisions about the software, its use and its design.  相似文献
