As a result of the analysis of Odén, it is possible to apply the sedimentation method quantitatively to the determination of particle distribution of clays in the dispersed state. An experimental procedure is described by which a number of points on the curve may be determined without the aid of any special apparatus. Sedimentation without the aid of a deflocculating agent gives valuable information as to the condition of the clay. Flocculated clays behave like jellies and the method of particle analysis cannot be applied in this case. Data concerning the usual physical properties are presented and these are found consistent with the results of the sedimentation tests as confirmed by microscope observations. The dispersed and fine grained clays are characterized by high dry strength, and the effect of deflocculating a clay is to increase its dry strength.  相似文献

Some possible ceramic applications of the Toepler mercury pump as employed in determination of gases in various materials are discussed. The procedure followed in measuring the gases given off by a clay slip at reduced pressures is described. It was found that 4.65% of gases by volume are removed from a sample of clay slip by reducing the pressure on the sample to boiling (25 mm.). An additional 0.18% of gases was cvolved between the boiling pressure and 1.8 mm. at which pressure the sample was dry.  相似文献

A critical study of the apparatus has been carried on to reduce variations in results due to manipulation. Specimens were made by squeeze molding in saturated plaster molds instead of forming in the hands. The loading device was changed so that the stress could be increased continuously instead of intermittently as heretofore. The specimens were designed so that the ratio of the maximum stress in the outer fibers of the circular section was to that of the square section as 3.8 is to 1. Clays having the same water content were compared by studying the slopes of the stress-strain curve sup to the proportional limit.  相似文献

Chemiluminescence (CL) is a powerful analytical tool for trace gas measurements. In this mini-review, we present reactions and spectra of ozone-induced CL for various compounds and techniques for detecting such CL. Next discussed are CL applications where real gas samples were successfully measured. Chemiluminescence monitoring has been used as universal nitrogen and sulfur detectors for gas chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Chemiluminescence detection can be used as the basis of compact, affordable, and sensitive analyzers for real-sample analysis. Isoprene and sulfur compounds in breath and atmospheric samples have been successfully measured by coupling with a small collection system. Short-term (5 min) sorbent collection enhances the CL signal and considerably reduces interference. For sulfur gas analysis, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulfide can be separated on the same column that is used for collection. Waterborne arsenic is measured by automated arsine generation and CL reaction of arsine and ozone. In addition to gas-phase CL, more recent efforts towards the determination of gases by CL generated at solid/gas and liquid/gas interfaces are also discussed.  相似文献

A simple laboratory test is described wherein successive shipments of feldspar are checked against preceding shipments. This method gives a very accurate idea of variation of feldspar shipments. The molten flux is poured into the bore of a steel cylinder that is resting on an iron plate. A tightly fitting plunger is inserted into the bore and rapped smartly with a hammer. An apparatus for measuring the resistance to abrasion, or scratching, of glazes and possibly other materials is described. It provides, essentially, for the wearing away of the surface by means of standard cement sand, which is allowed to run through a funnel adjusted to deliver a definite amount of sand for a given time interval, and to strike the inclined surface of the test piece after falling a fixed distance. The loss in weight under this treatment is assumed to bear a definite relation to the resistance to abrasion.  相似文献

An apparatus is described by means of which annealing data on glass may be rapidly and accurately obtained. Essentially, the apparatus consists of a mechanical means straining the glass, an optical means of measuring the stresses, and a means of heating the sample uniformly while making the measurement. The results are consistent and expressed in definite terms. The specimens for test may be quite small. The differential thermal analysis apparatus described consists of an important improvement. This is the arrangement of the sample and standard holder so that the thermocouples become both the holder and the differential temperature measuring device. A data acquisition system has been developed to collect, analyze and store large volumes of rapid kinetic data measured from a stopped-flow spectrophotometer. A digital minicomputer, with an A/D converter, tape drive unit and formatter, analog recorder, oscilloscope, and input/output terminal interfaced to the stopped-flow spectrophotometer provides the complete system. Timing for actual data collection is generated through internal computer software with inclusion of A/D conversion time. After a simple initialization from the computer console, software programming provides complete interaction between a user and the terminal. The user is directed through the initialization by a series of decision steps. The first step is to choose a data file, either existing or new. Once the desired file is selected, several options including data collection, analysis, storage, and printing are selectable.

Ozone decomposition and the rapid reaction between ozone and cyclohexene in neutral solutions were studied using the data acquisition system. At 25°C, the ozonation reaction was found to have a second order rate constant of 2.19 × 106 l/mole-sec (less than 10-3 sec. half life).  相似文献
