The wide viewing angle technologies for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are reviewed. The most promising liquid crystal modes for wide view technologies, such as in-plane switching, multidomain vertical alignment, patterned vertical alignment, and advanced-super-view are compared. By optimizing the phase-compensation films and their device configurations, the ultrawide-view LCDs with a contrast ratio higher than 100:1 at /spl plusmn/85/spl deg/ viewing cone are demonstrated. 相似文献

Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are commonly found in portable equipment. The main criticisms aimed at these displays are their asymmetric angle of view and dull grey appearance, which is particularly acute in low ambient lighting. Nematic liquid crystals are being used in a variety of display devices that capitalize on unique characteristics of these organic fluids. This paper discusses the purification and preparation of nematic liquid crystals, their operating temperature ranges, and the extent to which their properties meet the requirements of current dynamic-scattering and field-effect displays. In a fast-scan mode of addressing a matrix of m rows and n columns, in which the columns are scanned, contrast is optimized by maximizing the ratio of the rms voltage at a selected intersection to that at a nonselected one. We have developed a high-transmittance in-plane switching (HT-IPS) liquid crystal display (LCD) using special electrode design on the same substrate. The featured electrode configuration generates substantial horizontal electric fields between the electrode groups, and fringe fields with rich horizontal components within the regions of electrode groups. The former is similar to the IPS mode and the latter is similar to the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode. The HT-IPS mode exhibits a high transmittance (> 90 % of twisted nematic (TN) mode), as well as wide viewing angle for cells using both positive and negative dielectric anisotropy LC materials. In addition, we also compare the electro-optical performance of the HT-IPS with IPS and FFS cells under the same conditions. 相似文献

The uniaxial-film-compensated wide-view liquid crystal displays, with initially homogeneous alignment and vertical alignment, are analyzed. For each compensation scheme, the analytical solutions with the illustration of Poincare sphere representation are derived. Unlike transmissive liquid crystal display (LCD), spectral reflectance of reflective LCD along normal direction was observed to be different for left and right rotation of LC molecules or different domains. Characteristics of spectral reflectance distribution were analyzed. The electro-optic properties of a multi-domain in-plane switching liquid crystal display (IPS LCD) are investigated through a three-dimensional (3-D) simulator, which combines the finite element and finite difference methods for fast solutions. The bending angle between the chevron-shaped electrodes makes an important contribution to the operating voltage and response time, and suppresses the color shift. Using optimized uniaxial compensation films, the viewing cone of the multi-domain IPS LCD is widened to /spl plusmn/80/spl deg/ at 100:1 contrast ratio. A high-contrast, fast-response, and polarizer-free reflective display using a dye-doped dual-frequency liquid crystal gel is demonstrated. The high contrast ratio originates from the combination of light scattering from the microdomain polymer gel and absorption from the black dyes. In this paper, we studied the optics of transmissive bistable nematic liquid crystal displays by using the Poincare sphere approach. We derived analytical solutions of the polarization state of the outcoming light for the two bistable states. We have found the optimum modes of film compensated bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal displays. Our results show that the number of optimized modes at a fixed wavelength of film-compensated bistable twisted nematic (BTN) is infinite. We identified the optimized modes for displays operated in the whole visible light wavelength region. We calculated the transmission spectra of the two bistable states of the optimized modes. 相似文献

The spontaneous formation of self-aligned multidomains is used for fabricating wideviewing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) based on dielectric surface patterns (DSPs). The periodic DSPs can be produced on substrates through either the curing of photopolymers or the replica molding of dielectric polymers. Due to the symmetric multidomain structure associated with the initial liquid crystal (LC) director distribution, the LC cells with the periodic DSPs are found to show high contrast and wideviewing characteristics. 相似文献
