The potential impact of zebra mussel infestation on the dynamics of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Hudson River was determined by investigating the biodeposition and bioconcentration of PCBs, using algal food contaminated with 2,5,2'- and 2,4,2',4'-chlorobiphenyls (CBPs) in the laboratory. Approximately 46-90% of the total food was ingested depending on the supply rate. The highest proportion of ingested congeners was found in biodeposits (64+/-11% for 2,5,2'-CBP, and 52+/-6% for 2,4,2',4'-CBP), followed by tissues (17+/-3% for 2,5,2'-CBP, and 23+/-5% for 2,4,2',4'-CBP), and the lowest in shells. The clearance rate decreased with increasing food concentration, but increased with dilution rate. On the other hand, ingestion rate (IR) increased with food concentration and dilution rate. IR also increased with food supply rate (food concentrationxdilution rate) following the same linear function whether the supply rate was varied through food concentration or dilution rate. Therefore, the dilution rate- or food concentration-dependent variation in IR was due to the change in the food supply rate. IR was independent of the kind of PCB congeners. The trend of bioaccumulation in mussel tissues from food ingestion was similar to that of IR; bioaccumulation increased linearly with food supply rate, whether the supply rate was varied through the dilution rate or the food concentration. The bioaccumulation of 2,4,2',4'-CBP was significantly higher than that of 2,5,2'-CBP (p<0.05). The bioaccumulation was linearly related to the IR or to the total amount of food ingested. Assimilation efficiency, PCB incorporated in the tissue per total ingested PCB, was higher for 2,4,2',4'-CBP than for 2,5,2'-CBP (p<0.05). The congener concentration in biodeposits increased with food supply rate. However, the concentration of 2,5,2'-CBP was significantly greater than that of 2,4,2',4'-CBP in a mirror image of bioaccumulation. These results indicate that zebra mussels may significantly alter PCB dynamics in the Hudson River through redeposition from the water column and through bioconcentration. 相似文献

In the Flix Reservoir (Ebro River, Spain), ca. 300,000 tons of industrial waste were dumped because of the activity of a factory plant in Flix. Within the recovery program implemented, this exceptional situation provides a unique opportunity to test the value of zebra mussel as sentinel organism. Ten metal concentrations were measured in mussels from different sites to assess spatial redistribution of metals and bioavailability to the food web. Our results showed an important metal uptake by mussels; metal concentrations (except As) measured in impacted sites were up to 10 times higher than in control sites, and Mn and Hg exceeded several times the levels previously reported for polluted waters. Concentrations increased downstream showing the metal mobilization from polluted sediments in Flix Reservoir. The higher metal concentrations measured in zebra mussel individuals clearly indicated their bioavailability to the food web, allowing the toxics transfer to predators and occasionally to humans. Thus, zebra mussel is a valuable sentinel organism to identify highly polluted waters, transport routes and trophic transfer. 相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have positive effects on the toxin-producing cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, at low phosphorus (P) concentrations, but negative effects on M. aeruginosa at high P, with a large-scale enclosure experiment in an oligotrophic lake. After three weeks, mussels had a significantly positive effect on M. aeruginosa at ambient P (total phosphorus, TP ∼10 μg L−1), and a significantly negative effect at high P (simulating a TP of ∼40 μg L−1 in lakes). Positive and negative effects were strong and very similar in magnitude. Thus, we were able to ameliorate a negative effect of Dreissena invasion on water quality (i.e., promotion of Microcystis) by adding P to water from an oligotrophic lake. Our results are congruent with many field observations of Microcystis response to Dreissena invasion across ecosystems of varying P availability. 相似文献

The waterfront of historic Kingston, Ontario (pop: 113,000) has been used for industrial activities for over a century. More than 40 industries have existed within the inner harbour, and while many of these industries are no longer present, the properties that they operated on remain as potential sources of persistent contamination to the present day, including mercury. To assess the extent and distribution of total mercury (THg) contamination, 21 sediment cores as well as pore water samples were collected within the inner harbour of Kingston. The spatial distribution of THg in the surface sediment is not homogenous; with concentrations in the surface sediment along the southwestern shoreline, adjacent to the former industrial properties, are significantly greater (p < 0.01) than the rest of the inner harbour, and were above the Federal severe effect limit (> 2000 ug/kg;) guideline for sediment. MeHg was detected in some sediment cores, and was found to have a significant, positive correlation with [THg] in the surface sediment (0-5 cm). THg was not found in storm sewer discharges, but was detected in terrestrial soil near the Kingston Rowing Club at a concentration of more than 4000 ug/kg. Significant [THg] was detected in runoff draining from contaminated shoreline soils, indicating that erosion from terrestrial sources may be an ongoing source of Hg to the sediment. It can be concluded that there is an increased risk over time to surrounding ecosystems where properties with historical contamination are not remediated until they are developed. 相似文献

This study evaluated the impact of biocides (tributyltin, chlorthalonil and Irgarol 1051) and of pollutants (copper, inorganic and methyl mercury and 4-nonylphenol) occurring in Ebro River (NE Spain) on early developmental stages of native Spanish freshwater and invasive zebra mussels. Toxicity tests were conducted with embryos and glochidia of zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) and the naiad species Unio elongatulus, respectively. Toxicity was quantified in terms of median effective concentration (EC50) impairing embryogenesis and glochidia viability in single and combined mixture exposures. Irgarol 1051 was not toxic at concentrations below 40 × 103 nM. Zebra mussel embryos were on average 50 fold more sensitive to the studied pollutants than glochidia. Tributyltin was the most toxic compound with EC50s for zebra mussel embryos and glochidia, respectively, of 1.24 and 47.93 nM, followed by chlorothalonil (3.65, 176.58 nM), methyl mercury (7.06, 156.4 nM), inorganic mercury (3.64, 518.28 nM), copper (19.73, 1358.55 nM) and 4-nonylphenol (33.99, 1221.48 nM). Combined toxicity of Ebro River pollutants (copper, inorganic and methyl mercury and 4-nonylphenol) was greater than additive in zebra mussel embryos and additive in glochidia. These results indicated that contaminant levels that affect zebra mussel embryos are not toxic to early life stages of the naiad mussel species U. elongatulus. 相似文献

The distribution of chlorophyll and phytoplankton communities were compared to nutrient concentrations and hydrological parameters along the main stretch of the river Ebro. A progressive increase in planktonic chlorophyll was observed from the upper reaches to the middle section of the river. Chlorophyll reached a maximum (60-80 microg L(-1)) in the meandering section (downstream of the city of Zaragoza), where nutrient inputs (both N and P) and the residence time of the water are very high. In this meandering section phytoplankton assemblages consisted of large centric diatoms and Scenedesmus sp.pl. These longitudinal patterns were interrupted by the presence of three large reservoirs in the lower section of the river. In the section below the reservoirs, the shorter residence water time, the presence of the invasive zebra mussel, and the massive macrophyte development may explain the historical decrease in chlorophyll-a (from 20-45 microg L(-1) in the 1990s to the present 2-5 microg L(-1)). Phytoplankton densities were extremely poor in this section of the river, where large colonial Coelastrum sp.pl. and Pediastrum sp.pl. were the most characteristic taxa. 相似文献

Exploratory data analysis such as hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis were applied to water quality dataset of the Kaduna River, obtained during 3 years (2008–2010), monthly monitoring of eight key different sampling sites for 19 parameters to extract correlations and similarities between variables and to classify river sampling sites in groups of similar quality. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped eight sampling sites into three statistically significant clusters of similar water composition. Six varifactors were obtained after varimax rotation of initial principal components using principal component analysis. These techniques gave an insight into the sources of pollution. Anthropogenic influence (municipal, industrial wastewater and agricultural run‐off) was the major source of river water pollution. 相似文献

Knowing the water resources in a river basin is a key aspect to appropriate water planning, and they can be estimated by lumped water balance models. The possibility to transfer the calibrated parameters of a contrasted model to non‐gauged ones improves this knowledge with no need for direct measurements. This work studies the transferability of the parameters of the lumped models in five catchments in the southeast of Spain, testing the influence of the snow and the effect of serial autocorrelation in the goodness of fit. The results are also compared with those of the distributed model of reference in Spain (SIMPA). As principal results, the abcd model is the selected one, the snow effect is negligible, the transferability of parameters for this case is not totally possible, and serial autocorrelation must be included for this kind of modelling. 相似文献

The MERSADE Project (LIFE — European Union) tested the Las Cuevas decommissioned mining complex (Almadén mercury district, Spain) as a potential site for the installation of a future European prototype safe deposit of surplus mercury from industrial activities. We here present the results of a baseline study on the distribution of mercury in soils and air in the Las Cuevas complex and surrounding areas, and show the results of a plume contamination model using the ISC-AERMOD software. Despite restoration works carried out in 2004, the Las Cuevas complex can still be regarded as hotspot of mercury contamination, with large anomalies above 800 μg g− 1 Hg (soils) and 300 ng Hg m− 3 (air). In the case of soils, high, and persistent concentrations above 26 μg g− 1 Hg extend well beyond the complex perimeter for more than 2 km. These concentrations are about three orders of magnitude above world baselines. The same applies to mercury in air, with high concentrations above 300 ng Hg m− 3 inside the perimeter, which nonetheless fade away in a few hundred meters. Air contamination modelling (Hg gas) predicts formation of a NW-SE oriented narrow plume extending for a few hundred meters from the complex perimeter. The geographic isolation of Las Cuevas and its mining past make the complex an ideal site for mercury stocking. The only potential environmental hazards are the raising of livestock only a few hundred meters away from the complex and flash floods. 相似文献

This paper presents an assessment of water quality of the River Khan, which passes through Indore and is subjected to sewage and industrial pollution. The analysis of various pollution parameters showed an increase when the sewage and industrial channels joined the river. Changes in the biotic communities, such as phytoplankton, zooplankton and macrozoobenthos, have been explained numerically with the help of a diversity index and showed a decrease in diversity values with an increase in pollution, along with a correlation with physico‐chemical aspects. Genera tolerant to various degree of pollution has also been identified. The extend of pollution by certain heavy metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd and Hg has also been studied. 相似文献

This paper presents results of testing models for the radioactive contamination of river water and bottom sediments by 90Sr, 137Cs and 239,240Pu. The scenario for the model testing was based on data from the Techa River (Southern Urals, Russia), which was contaminated as a result of discharges of liquid radioactive waste into the river. The endpoints of the scenario were model predictions of the activity concentrations of 90Sr, 137Cs and 239,240Pu in water and bottom sediments along the Techa River in 1996. Calculations for the Techa scenario were performed by six participant teams from France (model CASTEAUR), Italy (model MARTE), Russia (models TRANSFER-2, CASSANDRA, GIDRO-W) and Ukraine (model RIVTOX), all using different models. As a whole, the radionuclide predictions for 90Sr in water for all considered models, 137Cs for MARTE and TRANSFER-2, and 239,240Pu for TRANSFER-2 and CASSANDRA can be considered sufficiently reliable, whereas the prediction for sediments should be considered cautiously. At the same time the CASTEAUR and RIVTOX models estimate the activity concentrations of 137Cs and 239,240Pu in water more reliably than in bottom sediments. The models MARTE (239,240Pu) and CASSANDRA (137Cs) evaluated the activity concentrations of radionuclides in sediments with about the same agreement with observations as for water. For 90Sr and 137Cs the agreement between empirical data and model predictions was good, but not for all the observations of 239,240Pu in the river water-bottom sediment system. The modelling of 239,240Pu distribution proved difficult because, in contrast to 137Cs and 90Sr, most of models have not been previously tested or validated for plutonium. 相似文献
