Possible nuclear decay of bismuth induced by a mechanical impact

It is experimentally shown that the metallic dust after the inertial explosion induced by the impact of a metallic bismuth striker on a fixed steel barrier contains platinum and boron, which were absent before the explosion. The existence of platinum and boron is qualitatively determined. The emission of single 8-MeV α particles is also detected from the metallic dust that forms at the site of the impact interaction of bismuth with steel. Both effects point to possible nuclear decay of bismuth due to the energy of a mechanical impact.

Nonlinear excitation of capillary waves by the Marangoni motion induced with a modulated laser beam

A cross-sectional study was done, focusing on the prevalence of exercise-induced asthma in Jamaica and variables that may account for this rate. No previous study of this nature had been undertaken, and the investigators contend that there is a need to identify children who suffer from this condition but are unaware of it. A sample of 214 students from primary and secondary schools in the Corporate Area were chosen and given questionnaires to complete. Eighty-four of the children reported a history consistent with that of exercise-induced asthma and were further subjected to stress testing for a definitive diagnosis of this condition. A prevalence of 20.8% [C.I. +/- 5.35] was identified which reflected a rate comparable to that recorded in North America. There was a significantly higher prevalence in children of primary school ages, but all other variables considered for significance testing to determine associations between these and the prevalence of EIA proved not significant. A recommendation has been made for opportunity screening by medical practitioners.     

Tissue reactions induced by Schistosoma mansoni in Biomphalaria glabrata

In Biomphalaria glabrata with a strong natural resistance, Schistosoma mansoni sporocysts are rapidly encapsulated by granulocytes and killed, mainly by the strong phagocytic activity of the cells. Irradiated Echinostoma paraensei sporocysts seem able to suppress the function of the granulocytes. Tissue reactions in snails with self-cure demonstrate: involvement of two types of cells, granulocytes and hyalinocyte-like cells; formation of amoeba-fibrous capsules; limited tendency of granulocytes to become attracted to the parasites; a slow process of parasite destruction; and a possible involvement of humoral factors. It seems that there is partial suppression of the granulocyte function in smails with self-cure.
