The two key moments of Rationalism in Italy - the Gruppo 7 of the 1930s and the Tendenza of the 1960s - stand in counterpoint. The Tendenza espoused a very different ideology to its predecessor and thus remained ambivalent to the earlier legacy. Andrew Peckham reveals how this led to a history of discontinuity and, ultimately, recognition of Rationalism's limitations despite the involvement of influential figures such as Giuseppe Terragni, Aldo Rossi and Giorgio Grassi. Rationalism remains at the sidelines of contemporary architecture in Italy – a latent current rather than a leading force. Andrew Peckham and Lucia Tozzi reveal how this stubborn but rich seam is manifesting itself: in Cino Zucchi's substantial housing scheme on the outskirts of Milan; Werner Tscholl's insertion into Schloss Sigmundskron/Castel Firmiano; Beniamino Servino's continued work on the Nursery School in Formicola, Caserta; and C+S Associati's Nursery School at Covolo di Pederobba in Treviso. Architects are sometimes criticised for prioritising aesthetics over functionality; but attempts to involve end users in building design all too often encounter apathy. Is a successful participatory design process possible? Carlo Ratti and Matthew Claudel of MIT's Senseable City Lab have been researching ways to make it so. Their solutions include an adaptation of the A/B testing method used in software development, together with means from questionnaires to immersive virtual systems that can draw both conscious and unconscious public feedback while maintaining architects' central role.  相似文献

Diego Caramma describes Stefano Boeri's pervasive influence on architectural thought in recent years as editor of Domus, exhibition curator and founder of the Multiplicity urban research platform. As he explains, Boeri's significance lies in his ability to confront contemporary conditions for architecture rather than just the dissemination of current trends and ideas. Currently one of the most active offices in Rome, Arlotti-Beccu-Desideri-Raimondo (ABDR) has seven major projects under way or at the point of completion. Massimo Locci explains why, despite being theoretically and methodologically rigorous, the practice's work cannot be readily categorised. Unique in its combination of a purist Modernist language with an aptitude for expressive informality, the office is also proactive in its adoption of bioclimatic technologies and its understanding of new communication models.
