A new method to suppress the cladding-mode coupling loss in fiber Bragg gratings, by independent control of the core refractive index profile and the photosensitive profile, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Across the core and the inner cladding, a uniform step photosensitive profile was introduced by co-doping GeO/sub 2/ and B/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The core refractive index was selectively raised by further doping Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in the core that has negligible photosensitivity at 244 nm. For strong Bragg gratings inscribed on the fiber, the cladding-mode coupling loss was suppressed below 0.3 dB.  相似文献

A new and simple fabrication method of domain-inverted gratings in MgO:LiNbO/sub 3/ is demonstrated. It was found that ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation reduces the voltage for inversion. Domain-inverted gratings of /spl sim/15 /spl mu/m period were fabricated by voltage application at room temperature under irradiation of UV light periodically-patterned using a photomask.  相似文献

Stable single-mode single-lobe operation to high powers is predicted for two-dimensional surface-emitting lasers, if second-order distributed feedback/distributed Bragg reflector (DFB/DBR) gratings are preferentially placed in the elements of a resonant-optical-waveguide array. Beside their usual functions (i.e., feedback and outcoupling), the gratings act as an effective array-mode selector due to different interaction with the gratings of different array modes. The in-phase array mode is strongly favored to lase around its (lateral) resonance due to better field overlap with DFB region and lower interelement absorption loss than for nonresonant array modes. For 20-element arrays with 700/600 /spl mu/m DFB/DBR gratings, emitting at /spl lambda/=0.98 /spl mu/m, high (/spl sim/100 A/cm/sup 2/) intermodal discrimination /spl Delta/J/sub th/ is obtained. /spl Delta/J/sub th/ is enhanced to /spl sim/225 A/cm/sup 2/ by introducing free-carrier absorption in the array-interelement regions.  相似文献

It is shown that thermally fixed photorefractive gratings fabricated for waveguide lasers in Ti:Fe:Er:LiNbO/sub 3/ can be refreshed and stabilised by the upconverted green fluorescence from Er/sup 3+/ ions. Spectral properties of such refreshed gratings are found to be superior and are excellent for a single-frequency laser emission.  相似文献

We investigated stability and phase noise of V-band millimeter-wave generated by using a hybrid integrated reciprocating optical modulator consisting of a pair of fiber Bragg gratings and a LiNbO/sub 3/ optical phase modulator. The amplitude fluctuation of generated millimeter-wave was less than 1% without using feedback stabilization technique. Phase noise of the millimeter-wave was -74.3 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz offset.  相似文献

Wavelength- and angle-multiplexed holographic Bragg gratings are used as a highly sensitive wavelength sensor. An absolute wavelength accuracy as high as 0.3 pm has been demonstrated with gratings recorded in an Fe-doped LiNbO/sub 3/ photorefractive crystals of dimension of 5/spl times/5/spl times/4 (mm/sup 3/). This technique provides a simple and accurate solution to laser wavelength measurement in applications such as wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fiber-optic networks, precision interferometry, Doppler spectroscopy, and others.  相似文献

Previously electroabsorption modulated lasers (EMLs) have been demonstrated using source lasers with grating strengths of two or less (k/sub r/L /spl les/ 2.0). Spatial holeburning was believed to limit the magnitude of the optimal grating strength. However, those standard-grating-strength lasers are sensitive to reflections from modulator output facet, integrated amplifiers, combiners, fiber tip, etc. and are a barrier to making integrated modules for long-span transmission. EMLs having record-strength (K/sub r/L > 6) gratings are fabricated. Output power >9.5 dBm, sidemode suppression ratio beyond 50 dB, single-mode yield >60% at high power, and power penalty <0.3 dB at 10 Gb/s for 75 km of fiber are demonstrated.  相似文献

A design procedure and experimental method is presented for modeling optical periodic waveguides by means of more convenient parallel plate microwave configurations. These models are suitable for verifying the beam-coupling properties of dielectric gratings that operate in the fundamental TE/sub 0/ surface-wave mode. In particular, blazed gratings with high coupling efficiencies have been constructed and their characteristics have been measured. The results have shown that previously developed design criteria, which are based on a simple Bragg-scattering approach, can yield highly efficient broad-band beam couplers that are not subject to critical fabrication tolerances.  相似文献

Planar lightwave circuits based on III-nitride wide-bandgap semiconductors are proposed and the feasibility of developing III-nitride-based novel photonic integrated circuits for applications in fiber-optical communications is discussed. III-nitrides have low attenuation in the near-infrared wavelength region because of their wide bandgaps, while as semiconductors their refractive indexes can be modulated by carrier injection. III-nitrides are also well known for their ability to operate at high temperatures, high power levels and in harsh environments. These characteristics make III-nitrides ideal candidates for tunable optical phased-array (PHASAR) devices for optical communications. We have characterized the optical properties of Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/N epilayers in the 1550-nm wavelength region, including the refractive indexes and the impact of Al concentrations. Single-mode ridged optical waveguide devices using GaN-AlGaN heterostructures have been designed, fabricated and characterized for operation in the 1550-nm wavelength window. The birefringence of wurtzite GaN grown on sapphire substrate has been observed. Refractive indexes were found to be different for signal optical field perpendicular and parallel to the crystal c axis (n/sub /spl perp// /spl ne/ n/sub ///). More importantly, we found an approximately 10% change in the index difference /spl Delta/n=n/sub ///-n/sub /spl perp// with varying the waveguide orientation within the c plane, and a 60/spl deg/ periodicity was clearly observed. This is attributed to the hexagonal structure of the nitride materials. Various functional waveguide devices have been realized, including 2/spl times/2 directional couplers and eight-wavelength array-waveguide gratings. Theoretical predictions of temperature sensitivity and the efficiency of carrier-induced refractive change are provided.  相似文献

Strong photosensitivity responses with the use of above-bandgap 157-nm F/sub 2/-laser radiation are reported for standard germanosilicate fiber. A large 1.3/spl times/10/sup -3/ effective index change at 1.55 /spl mu/m was inferred by trimming strong and weak Bragg gratings in hydrogen-free fiber. The F/sub 2/-laser fluence-processing window of <50 mJ/cm/sup 2/ is much lower than with traditional ultraviolet (UV) lasers. For hydrogen-soaked fiber, highly asymmetric refractive-index profiles were noted by atomic force microscopy and microreflection microscopy, yielding a peak index change of >0.01 across a small 1-/spl mu/m penetration depth at the fiber core. The index asymmetry appears to underlie the large >5/spl times/10/sup -5/ value of laser-induced birefringence.  相似文献

We have realized broad-band distributed Bragg reflectors with photorefractive gratings recorded at 441.6 nm in channel Ti : Cu : LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguides. Proton-assisted copper exchange is used to enable a high level of copper doping and, thereby, achieve an extremely large modulation of refractive index (/spl ges/ 5/sup */10/sup -4/) within a photorefractive grating. Experimental structures demonstrate reflectivities up to 17% with full-width at half-maximum bandwidths in excess of 1.2 nm at center wavelengths around 1.55 /spl mu/m.  相似文献

A novel technique for the fabrication of domain reversed gratings in LiNbO/sub 3/ by means of direct electron beam writing at room temperature without any static bias is reported. The domain grating has been achieved not only at the -c surface of the crystal, but also for the entire region of the crystal. Such a structure should be useful for various nonlinear optic applications. A preliminary study on the second harmonic generation has also been demonstrated under the quasi-phase matched condition with high efficiency.<>  相似文献

The design and operation of InGaAs-GaAs ridge-waveguide distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) single quantum-well lasers with first-order surface gratings fabricated using only a single growth step are presented. Uncoated devices exhibit CW threshold currents as low as 6 mA with slope efficiencies of 0.46 W/A. By varying the period of the first-order DBR grating, a wavelength range of 540 /spl Aring/ (/spl sim/15.2 THz) is obtained with the threshold currents and slope efficiencies remaining below 10 mA and above 0.40 W/A, respectively, over the entire wavelength range. High characteristic temperature, T/sub 0/, values of 450 K, as measured between T=10/spl deg/C and 40/spl deg/C, are obtained for devices with Bragg wavelengths positively detuned from the peak gain wavelength. The spectral linewidth minimum of these devices is below 25 kHz, which is the resolution limit of the self-heterodyning system used to measure the spectral linewidth.  相似文献

A strong and permanent ultraviolet photosensitivity enhancement was locked into standard optical fiber pre-treated with above-bandgap 157-nm F/sub 2/-laser radiation. Below-bandgap 248-nm irradiation of the pre-treated fiber yielded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with an index contrast of 6.5 /spl times/ 10/sup -4/, a value four-fold larger than that available in 16% Ge-doped photosensitive fiber. The F/sub 2/-laser photosensitivity locking was 300 times more effective than with KrF-laser pre-treatment in terms of the accumulated fluence required to lock in a similar refractive index change. Accelerated FBG aging tests equivalent to 25 years at 70/spl deg/C revealed a less than 2% reflectivity decay in both 157- and 248-nm pre-treated fibers, which is sufficient to eliminate the postannealing step typically required in hydrogen-loaded fibers. The large photosensitization and the superior thermal stability of both 248- and 157-nm pre-treated fibers are associated with a new Si-H bond absorption feature at 1387 nm, which appears only during the FBG formation step.  相似文献

Dot lasers with first-, second- and third-order gain coupled distributed feedback (DFB) gratings have been realized by low damage dry etching in combination with wet chemical etching and epitaxial over-growth. This technique allows above room temperature (RT) operation of dot DFB lasers with dot diameters down to 85 nm. The laser spectra show the expected emission of gain coupled DFB lasers. Threshold current densities between 1.1 kA/cm/sup 2/ and 2.6 kA/cm/sup 2/ could be obtained depending on size of the active region. An improvement in T/sub 0/ could be demonstrated comparing 0-D/1-D/2-D lasers on the same wafer. Based on the dot grating geometry improvement of the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) was observed for broad-area dot DFB lasers.  相似文献

The fabrication of Bragg gratings in commercial B-Ge and high-Ge optical fibers using 248-nm 500-fs laser radiation is demonstrated. The underlying photosensitivity process is that of Type IIA, where negative index change gratings are recorded, following a nonmonotonic index change growth. Refractive index evolution curves for both average and modulated index changes are presented. Index changes of the order of 10/sup -3/ are obtained for the fibers exposed, under 2.4 kJ/cm/sup 2/ accumulated energy density. For comparative purposes grating exposures using 248-nm nanosecond excimer laser radiation are also appended. Thermal annealing studies performed revealed that Type IIA negative index gratings fabricated using femtosecond pulses exhibit enhanced thermal stability, enduring temperatures up to 650/spl deg/C.  相似文献

The TE/TM polarization conversion characteristics of dielectric grating composed of left-handed materials for the case of plane wave oblique incidence are carefully investigated by a method which combines the multimode network theory with the rigorous mode matching method. It is indicated that complete polarization conversion between TE and TM modes can be realized using left-handed gratings. This can hardly achieve in the conventional right-handed gratings. Comparisons of polarization conversion properties between right-handed gratings and left-handed gratings are given with physical explanations. This unique merit of left-handed periodic structure is of important significance for accurate design of new millimeter wave TE/TM polarization converters.  相似文献

The accurately approximate formula of effective filling fraction q/sub w/ is obtained for the microstrip line with zero-thickness strip and isotropic substrate. The line capacitance per unit length C/epsilon/sub 0/ for the case with anisotropic substrate can easily be obtained by using the approximate formula of q/sub w/ and C/sub 0//epsilon/sub 0/ tabulated for the wide range of shape ratio w/h. Fiber lasers in the visible spectral range at 603 and 634 nm were demonstrated using upconversion in fluoride Pr/sup 3+/-Yb/sup 3+/-doped fibers and Bragg gratings photoinduced in germanosilicate fibers. Reliable fine tuning of the all-fiber laser over 6.9 at 603 nm has been demonstrated using high strength fiber Bragg gratings.  相似文献
