Computational model of a PEM fuel cell with serpentine gas flow channels   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model of a PEM fuel cell with serpentine flow field channels is presented in this paper. This comprehensive model accounts for the major transport phenomena in a PEM fuel cell: convective and diffusive heat and mass transfer, electrode kinetics, and potential fields. A unique feature of the model is the implementation of a voltage-to-current (VTC) algorithm that solves for the potential fields and allows for the computation of the local activation overpotential. The coupling of the local activation overpotential distribution and reactant concentration makes it possible to predict the local current density distribution more accurately. The simulation results reveal current distribution patterns that are significantly different from those obtained in studies assuming constant surface overpotential. Whereas the predicted distributions at high load show current density maxima under the gas channel area, low load simulations exhibit local current maxima under the collector plate land areas.  相似文献

In a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, local current density can vary drastically in the lateral direction across the land and channel areas. It is essential to know the lateral current density variations in order to optimize flow field design and fuel cell performance. Thus the objective of this work is to directly measure the lateral current density variations in a PEM fuel cell with a serpentine flow field. Five 1 mm-width partially-catalyzed membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), each corresponding to a different location from the center of the gas channel to the center of the land area are used in the experiments. Current densities for fuel cells with each of the partially-catalyzed MEAs are measured and the results provide the lateral current density distribution. The measurement results show that in the high cell voltage region, local current density is the highest under the center of the land area and decreases toward the center of the channel area; while in the low cell voltage region local current density is the highest under the center of the channel area and decreases toward the center of the land area. Besides, the effects of cathode flow rates on the lateral current density distribution have also been studied. Furthermore, comparisons have also been made by using air and oxygen in the cathode and it is found that when oxygen is used the local current density under the land is significantly enhanced, especially in the low cell voltage region.  相似文献

The cathode flow-field design of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) determines its reactant transport rates to the catalyst layer and removal rates of liquid water from the cell. This study optimizes the cathode flow field for a single serpentine PEM fuel cell with 5 channels using the heights of channels 2–5 as search parameters. This work describes an optimization approach that integrates the simplified conjugated-gradient scheme and a three-dimensional, two-phase, non-isothermal fuel cell model. The proposed optimal serpentine design, which is composed of three tapered channels (channels 2–4) and a final diverging channel (channel 5), increases cell output power by 11.9% over that of a cell with straight channels. These tapered channels enhance main channel flow and sub-rib convection, both increasing the local oxygen transport rate and, hence, local electrical current density. A diverging, final channel is preferred, conversely, to minimize reactant leakage to the outlet. The proposed combined approach is effective in optimizing the cathode flow-field design for a single serpentine PEMFC. The role of sub-rib convection on cell performance is demonstrated.  相似文献

In polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells, serpentine flow channels are used conventionally for effective water removal. The reactant flows along the flow channel with pressure decrease due to the frictional and minor losses as well as the reactant depletion because of electrochemical reactions in the cells. Because of the short distance between the adjacent flow channels, often in the order of 1 mm or smaller, the pressure gradient between the adjacent flow channels is very large, driving part of reactant to flow through the porous electrode backing layer (or the so-called gas diffusion layer)—this cross-leakage flow between adjacent flow channels in PEM fuel cells has been largely ignored in previous studies. In this study, the effect of cross-flow in an electrode backing layer has been investigated numerically by considering bipolar plates with single-channel serpentine flow field for both the anode and cathode side. It is found that a significant amount of reactant gas flows through the porous electrode structure, due to the pressure difference, and enters the next flow channel, in addition to a portion entering the catalyst layer for reaction. Therefore, mixing occurs between the relatively high concentration reactant stream following the flow channel and the relatively low reactant concentration stream going through the electrode. It is observed that the cross-leakage flow influences the reactant concentration at the interface between the electrode and the catalyst layer, hence the distribution of reaction rate or current density generated. In practice, this cross-leakage flow in the cathode helps drive the liquid water out of the electrode structure for effective water management, partially responsible for the good PEM fuel cell performance using the serpentine flow channels.  相似文献

In this study, we present a rigorous mathematical model, to treat prediction and analysis of proton exchange membrane fuel cells gas concentration and current density distribution in mass transfer area and chemical reaction area performed in 3‐D geometry. The model is based on the solution of the conservation equations of mass, momentum, species, and electric current in a fully integrated finite‐volume solver using the CFDRC commercial code. The influences of fuel cell performance with two kinds of flow channel pattern design are studied. The gas concentration of the straight flow pattern appears excessively non‐uniform, resulting in a local concentration polarization. On the other hand, the gas concentration is well distributed for the serpentine flow pattern, creating a better mass transfer phenomena. One of the most common types of flow field designs used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is the serpentine flow field. It is used for its simplicity of design, its effectiveness in distributing reactants and its water removal capabilities. The knowledge about where current density is higher, under the land or the channel, is critical for flow field design and optimization. Yet, no direct measurement data are available for serpentine flow fields. In this study a fuel cell with a single channel serpentine flow field is used to separately measure the current density under the land and channel, which is either catalyzed or insulated on the cathode. In this manner, a systematic study is conducted under a wide variety of conditions and a series of comparisons are made between land and channel current density. The results show that under most operating conditions, current density is higher under the land than that under the channel. However, at low voltage, a rapid drop off in current density occurs under the land due to concentration losses. The mechanisms for the direct measurement results and general guidelines for serpentine flow field design and optimizations are provided.  相似文献

The influences of various operating conditions on the current distribution of a direct methanol fuel cell with flow-fields of serpentine channels are investigated by means of a current-mapping method. The current densities generally deviate more from an even distribution when the cell temperature or flow rate of the cathode reactant is lower, or when the current loaded on the cell or the methanol concentration is higher. In addition, uneven current distributions decrease the cell performance. Relevant mass-transfer phenomena such as water flooding and methanol crossover are discussed. The characteristics of the channel configuration also affect the current density profiles. With a five-line serpentine channel, the current densities are lowered periodically where the flow direction is inverted due to the corner flow effect and the subsequent water accumulation. With a single serpentine channel, on the other hand, the current densities peak periodically where the flow direction is inverted due to enhanced air convection through the gas-diffusion layer.  相似文献

The serpentine flow field is the leading type of flow field used today in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and for this reason optimization of serpentine flow field design is extremely important. In this study, a unique technique developed in house is utilized to separately measure current density under the land and channel on a variety of serpentine flow field geometries. Each flow field is tested under a wide variety of operating conditions thereby providing guidance for the optimum design geometry. Experimental results show that generally flow fields with both thinner lands and thinner channels provide better overall performance. However, the optimal flow field designs are highly dependent on fuel cell operating parameters.  相似文献

This work reports on the performance of a single PEM fuel cell using symmetric flow patterns as gas delivery channels. Three flow patterns, two symmetric and one serpentine, are taken from the literature on cooling of electronics and they are implemented in a computational model as gas flow channels in the anode and cathode side of a PEMFC. A commercial CFD code was used to solve the physics involved in a fuel cell namely: the flow field, the mass conservation, the energy conservation, the species transport, and the electric/ionic fields under the assumptions of steady state and single phase. An important feature of the current modeling efforts is the analysis of the main irreversibilities at different current densities showing the main energy dissipation phenomena in each cell design. Also, the hydraulic performance of the flow patterns was studied by evaluating the pressure drop and pumping power. The first part of this work reveals the advantages of using a serpentine pattern over the base symmetric distributors. The second part is an optimization of the symmetric patterns using the entropy minimization criteria. Such an optimization led to the creation of a flow structure that promotes an improved performance from the point of view of power generation, uniformity of current density, and low pumping power.  相似文献

An important function of the gas delivery channels in PEM fuel cells is the evacuation of water at the cathode. The resulting two-phase flow impedes reactant transport and causes parasitic losses. There is a need for research on two-phase flow in channels in which the phase fraction varies along the flow direction as in operating fuel cells. This work studies two-phase flow in 60 cm long channels with distributed water injection through a porous GDL wall to examine the physics of flows relevant to fuel cells. Flow regime maps based on local gas and liquid flow rates are constructed for experimental conditions corresponding to current densities between 0.5 and 2 A cm−2 and stoichiometric coefficients from 1 to 4. Flow structures transition along the length of the channel. Stratified flow occurs at high liquid flow rates, while intermittent slug flow occurs at low liquid flow rates. The prevalence of stratified flow in these serpentine channels is discussed in relation to water removal mechanisms in the cathode channels of PEM fuel cells. Corners facilitate formation of liquid films in the channel, but may reduce the water-evacuation capability. This analysis informs design guidelines for gas delivery microchannels for fuel cells.  相似文献

The existing flow channels like parallel and gird channels have been modified for better fuel distribution in order to boost the performance of direct methanol fuel cell. The main objective of the work is to achieve minimized pressure drop in the flow channel, uniform distribution of methanol, reduced water accumulation, and better oxygen supply. A 3D mathematical model with serpentine channel is simulated for the cell temperature of 80 °C, 0.5 M methanol concentration. The study resulted in 40 mW/cm2 of power density and 190 mA/cm2 of current density at the operating voltage of 0.25 V. Further, the numerical study is carried out for modified flow channels to discuss their merits and demerits on anode and cathode side. The anode serpentine channel is unmatched by the modified zigzag and pin channels by ensuring the better methanol distribution under the ribs and increased the fuel consumption. But the cathode serpentine channel is lacking in water management. The modified channels at anode offered reduced pressure drop, still uniform reactant distribution is found impossible. The modified channels at cathode outperform the serpentine channel by reducing the effect of water accumulation, and uniform oxygen supply. So the serpentine channel is retained for methanol supply, and modified channel is chosen for cathode reactant supply. In comparison to cell with only serpentine channel, the serpentine anode channel combined with cathode zigzag and pin channel enhanced power density by 17.8% and 10.2% respectively. The results revealed that the zigzag and pin channel are very effective in mitigating water accumulation and ensuring better oxygen supply at the cathode.  相似文献

We studied the interaction of a water droplet with a solid wall on a hydrophobic gas diffusion layer (GDL). Of particular interest is the stability of the droplet as a function of plate wetting properties and the potential for liquid entrapment in the GDL/land contact area. Such transport is of relevance to breakthrough dynamics and convective liquid droplet transport in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell cathode gas channels. While a variety of complex coupled transport phenomena are present in the PEM fuel cell gas channel, we utilize a very simplified experimental model of the system where a droplet originally placed on a hydrophobic GDL is translated quasistatically across the GDL surface by a solid surface. Transport and entrapment are imaged using fluorescence microscopy. This work provides new insights into droplet behaviour at the GDL/land interface in a PEM fuel cell and suggests that hydrophobic land areas are preferable for mitigating the accumulation of liquid water under the land area of the gas flow channels.  相似文献

In this paper, a two-phase two-dimensional PEM fuel cell model, which is capable of handling liquid water transport across different porous materials, is employed for parametric studies of liquid water transport and distribution in the cathode of a PEM fuel cell. Attention is paid particularly to the coupled effects of two-phase flow and heat transfer phenomena. The effects of key operation parameters, including the outside cell boundary temperature, the cathode gas humidification condition, and the cell operation current, on the liquid water behaviors and cell performance have been examined in detail. Numerical results elucidate that increasing the fuel cell temperature would not only enhance liquid water evaporation and thus decrease the liquid saturation inside the PEM fuel cell cathode, but also change the location where liquid water is condensed or evaporated. At a cell boundary temperature of 80 °C, liquid water inside the catalyst layer and gas diffusion media under the current-collecting land would flow laterally towards the gas channel and become evaporated along an interface separating the land and channel. As the cell boundary temperature increases, the maximum current density inside the membrane would shift laterally towards the current-collecting land, a phenomenon dictated by membrane hydration. Increasing the gas humidification condition in the cathode gas channel and/or increasing the operating current of the fuel cell could offset the temperature effect on liquid water transport and distribution.  相似文献

In this research a 3D numerical study on a PEM fuel cell model with tubular plates is presented. The study is focused on the performance evaluation of three flow fields with cylindrical geometry (serpentine, interdigitated and straight channels) in a fuel cell. These designs are proposed not only with the aim to reduce the pressure losses that conventional designs exhibit with rectangular flow fields but also to improve the mass transport processes that take place in the fuel cell cathode. A commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was used to solve the numerical model. From the numerical solution of the fluid mechanics equations and the electrochemical model of Butler-Volmer different analysis of pressure losses, species concentration, current density, temperature and ionic conductivity were carried out. The results were obtained at the flow channels and the catalyst layers as well as in the gas diffusion layers and the membrane interfaces. Numerical results showed that cylindrical channel configurations reduced the pressure losses in the cell due to the gradual reduction of the angle at the flow path and the twist of the channel, thus facilitating the expulsion of liquid water from the gas diffusion layers and in turn promoting a high oxygen concentration at the triple phase boundary of the catalyst layers. Moreover, numerical results were compared to polarization curves and the literature data reported for similar designs. These results demonstrated that conventional flow field designs applied to conventional tubular plates have some advantages over the rectangular designs, such as uniform pressure and current density distributions among others, therefore they could be considered for fuel cell designs in portable applications.  相似文献

The focus of this paper is to study the flow crossover between two adjacent flow channels in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell with serpentine flow field design in bipolar plates. The effect of gas diffusion layer (GDL) deformation on the flow crossover due to the compression in a fuel cell assembly process is particularly investigated. A three-dimensional structural mechanics model is created to study the GDL deformation under the assembly compression. A three-dimensional PEM fuel cell numerical model is developed in the aforementioned deformed domain to study the flow crossover between the adjacent channels in the presence of the GDL intrusion. The models are solved in COMSOL Multiphysics—a finite element-based commercial software package. The pressure, velocity, oxygen mass fraction and local current density distribution are presented. A parametric study is conducted to quantitatively investigate the effect of the GDL’s transport related parameters such as porosity and permeability on the flow crossover between the adjacent flow channels. The polarization curves are also examined with and without the assembly compression considered. It is found that the compression effect is evident in the high current density region. Without considering the assembly compression, the fuel cell model tends to over-predict the fuel cell’s performance. The proposed method to simulate the crossover with the deformed computational domain is more accurate in predicting the overall performance.  相似文献

A full three-dimensional, non-isothermal computational fluid dynamics model of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell with straight flow field channels has been developed. This comprehensive model accounts for the major transport phenomena in a PEM fuel cell: convective and diffusive heat and mass transfer, electrode kinetics, and potential fields. The new feature of the algorithm developed in this work is its capability for accurate calculation of the local activation overpotentials, which in turn results in improved prediction of the local current density distribution. The model is shown to be able to understand the many interacting, complex electrochemical, and transport phenomena that cannot be studied experimentally. This model is used to study the effects of several operating, design, and material parameters on fuel cell performance. Detailed analyses of the fuel cell performance under various operating conditions have been conducted and examined. The analysis helped identifying critical parameters and shed insight into the physical mechanisms leading to a fuel cell performance under various operating conditions.  相似文献

Water management in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack has been a challenging issue on the road to commercialization. This paper presents a numerical investigation of air–water flow in parallel serpentine channels on cathode side of a PEM fuel cell stack by use of the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software package FLUENT. Different air–water flow behaviours inside the serpentine flow channels with inlet and outlet manifolds were discussed. The results showed that there were significant variations of water distribution and pressure drop in different cells at different times. The “collecting-and-separating effect” due to the serpentine shape of the gas flow channels, the pressure drop change due to the water distribution inside the inlet and outlet manifolds were observed. Several gas flow problems of this type of parallel serpentine channels were identified and useful suggestions were given through investigating the flow patterns inside the channels and manifolds.  相似文献

Interdigitated flow field is one of the commonly used designs in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The knowledge of how the current density differs under the inlet channel, the land and the outlet channel, is critical for flow field design and optimization. In this study, the current densities under the inlet channel, the land and the outlet channel in PEM fuel cell with an interdigitated flow field are separately measured using the technique of partially-catalyzed membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). The experimental results show that the current density under the outlet channel is significantly lower than that under the inlet channel, and the current density under the land is higher than both channels at typical fuel cell operation voltages. Further experimental results show that the pattern of local current density remains the same with different cathode flow rates.  相似文献

为研究流道结构对质子交换膜燃料电池(PEMFC)反应气体质量传输及输出性能的影响,建立翅脉流道、叶脉流道及蛇形流道的三维PEMFC几何模型,并对比3种流道的反应气体浓度分布、压力分布及电流密度分布,最后对翅脉流道结构参数进行优化。结果表明,与蛇形流道、叶脉流道相比,翅脉流道能明显改善流道和扩散层内反应气体浓度分布的均匀性,有利于强化反应气体向催化层的质量传递;翅脉流道能减小气体压力分布梯度,使反应气体扩散更加充分;翅脉流道的平均膜电流密度更大,有利于促进电化学反应稳定进行;翅脉流道能改善PEMFC的输出性能,翅脉流道峰值功率密度比蛇形流道、叶脉流道分别提高7.72%和6.25%;减小翅脉流道的直流道长度或圆弧流道圆心角,可提升翅脉流道输出性能。  相似文献

A non-isothermal and three-dimensional numerical model of a PEM fuel cell was developed to compute the water and heat management. Transport of water in the polymer membrane, phase change of water in the cathode porous medium and capillary flow to the gas channels were determined. Influences of these phenomena on fuel cells and conditions that may affect their performance have been numerically evaluated. Output variables are velocity, temperature, mass fraction, current density, voltage loss, water content of the polymer membrane, saturation and liquid flow fields. Cell voltage and total current density of PEM fuel cell were computed as well. Results show that there may be severe mass transfer limitations depending either on the design or on the water management of the cell. For the chosen conditions, the polymer membrane can keep and even increase its water content, as long as inlet flows are injected at 100% relative humidity. In case the fuel cell is operated under dehydrating conditions, the decrease of the water content of the polymer electrolyte may affect the performance. The variations of temperature were small. However, temperature plays an important role in the cathode reaction rate of the cell and in the dehydration of the polymer membrane. Numerical results and experimental data were found to be in good agreement.  相似文献
