Summary Creeping axisymmetric slip flow past a spheroid whose shape deviates slightly from that of a sphere is investigated. An exact solution is obtained to the first order in the small parameter characterizing the deformation. As an application, the case of flow past an oblate spheroid is considered and the drag experienced by it is evaluated. Special well-known cases are deduced and some observations made.Notation A n, Bn, Cn, Dn, En, Fn, b2, d2 Constants - a, b radii of spheres - coefficient of sliding fraction - D drag - , m parameters characterizing the deformation of the sphere - c a(1+) - viscosity coefficient - - dimensionless coordinate - I n Gegenbauer function - P n Legendre function - Stream function - U stream velocity at infinity

We examine the applicability of the standard McMillan inversion of Eliashberg's equations for superconductors with a nonconstant electronic density of statesN(). We do this usign simple models forN() and a realistically shapedN() taken from recent band structure work for Nb3Sn. It turns out that peak structure inN() near F may lead to gross errors in the derived Eliashberg function 2F() when the energy dependence ofN() is omitted in the inversion procedure. For Nb3Sn, this leads to a 40% overestimate of when 2F() is evaluated via the standard McMillan program.

The microstructure and phase transformations occurring in-iron-carbonitrides have been studied by means of X-ray and electron diffraction, electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectrometry. Ordering of the interstitial atoms, N or C, results in a hexagonal unit cell for Fe3(C, N) with parametersa=a3 andc=c wherea andc are the lattice parameters of the hexagonal close-packed (h c p) iron unit cell. Stacking faults on (0001) planes and partial dislocations with Burgers vector b=1/31 0 ¯1 0 are observed in quenched-Fe4 (C, N). After quench-aging, the carbonitrides show a structural hardening due to the precipitation of a metastable phase. Slow cooling of-carbonitrides with less than 25 at% interstitials leads to the precipitation of-carbonitride and ferrite in-phase grains which allows the orientation relationships between the-,- and-phases to be defined and a model of the-phase--phase transformation to be proposed.

Comparison of room-temperature x-ray diffraction data and temperature-dependent (190–220 K) permittivity data for different polytypes of monoclinic TlInS2 demonstrates that the anomalies in (T) at the phase transition correlate with the c cell parameter of the polytypes. The (T) curve of single-phase crystals with c 15 Å shows a single, sharp peak at about 205 K. The peaks in the of the polytypes with c 30 and 60 Å occur at other temperatures, indicating that permittivity data near the phase transition can be used to identify the polytypes present in TlInS2 crystals.Translated from Neorganicheskie Materialy, Vol. 40, No. 12, 2004, pp. 1423–1426.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Alekperov, Nadjafov

A four-ring, toroidal cross capacitor was used to measure accurately the relative dielectric permittivity (p,T) of He, Ar, N2, O2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, and CO2. ( is often called the dielectric constant.) The data are in the range from 0 to 50°C and, in many cases, extend up to 7 MPa. The accurate measurement of (p,T) required a good understanding of the deformation of the gas-filled capacitors with applied pressure. This understanding was tested in two ways. First, the experimental values of (p,T) for helium were compared with theoretical values. The average difference was within the noise, expt theory=(–0.05±0.21)×10–6, demonstrating that the four-ring cross capacitor deformed as predicted. Second, (p,T) of argon was measured simultaneously on three isotherms using two capacitors: the four-ring capacitor, and a 16-rod cross capacitor made using different materials and a different geometry. The results for the two capacitors are completely consistent, within the specifications of the capacitance bridge. There was a small inconsistency that was equivalent to 1×10–6 of the measured capacitances, or, for argon, 3×10–5 A , where A is the zero-density limit of the molar polarizability (–1)/[(+2)].

The dielectric properties of some glass-ceramic-on-metal substrates have been determined over the frequency range 500 Hz to 5 MHz using a.c. bridge techniques. The substrates consisted of cordierite-based glass-ceramics screen printed on molybdenum. For glass layers of thickness greater than 100 m both the permittivity, and the dielectric loss, , are frequency independent over this frequency range at room temperature giving the value of =6.5 and tan =8×10–3; the room-temperature data are consistent with the universal law of dielectric response. The variation of permittivity with temperature has also been examined and, below 120 °C, the temperature coefficient [(–1) (+2)]–1 (/T)p, was found to be 1.3×10–5 K–1. The results are compared with those previously reported for Al2O3 and AIN substrates.

We performed experimental investigation of the opening displacements of the contours of stress concentrators (notches and cracks) for various amplitudes of cyclic loading. On the basis of experimental results, we propose a new deformation parameter t which is a function of the notch (crack) tip opening displacement , namely, t /(+d*), where is the radius of the tip of the notch andd* is the characteristic size of the prefracture zone. It is shown that this parameter uniquely determines the number of cyclesN l to the initiation of a fatigue macrocrack independently of the geometry of the specimens and stress concentrators in elastic and elastoplastic materials, i.e., the dependence of t onN 1 is a characteristic of the material. It is experimentally demonstrated that this dependence enables one to quantitatively describe the process of fatigue fracture both in the stage of initiation of macrocracks and their propagation.Karpenko Physicomechanical Institute, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, L'viv. Conclusions Owing to the use of nomograms the above method is universal and rapid. It is independent of the frequency at which the values of and are measured, and it is equally applicable for measuring dielectric parameters of polar liquids which are highly absorbent at ultrahigh frequencies and have one or two clearly expressed minima in the relationship of tol, and for liquids with low dielectric losses in the uhf range, whose measurement with adequate precision is difficult by other methods. Among the deficiencies of the suggested method one should note the two values obtained for d and tan /2 from the nomogram readings. However, this deficiency can easlly eliminated either by comparing the two values for d and tan /2 with those obtained for them from a similar nomogram and the second minimum in the relationship of tol, or by an approximate evaluation of d and tan /2 by means of any other less precise measuring method.Translated from Izmeritel'naya Tekhnika, No. 10, pp. 48–49, October, 1970.

We determinedC p along six isobars near T in the vicinity of the upper superfluid transition point (upper point) from measurements ofC v and (P/T) v along six isochores.C p was analyzed with the functionC p =(A/)(1+D)+B for T>T, and the same function with primed coefficients for T, whereD denotes the strength of the effect of the irrelevant variable. The present work clarified the effect of the pressure (irrelevant variable) on the critical behavior of 4 He near T, that is, the correction term due to the irrelevant variable increases with pressure even in the small range 3×10–3. This indicates that the pressure depresses the true critical region. The universality of the amplitude ratioA/A was confirmed even in the vicinity of the upper point by specific heat measurements. With constraints ==–0.02, ==–0.5, andB=B the pressure-independent amplitude ratiosA/A=1.088±0.007 andD/D=0.85±0.2 were obtained.AD/AD=0.93±0.2 implies that the pressure has a similar effect onC p in the normal fluid and superfluid regions, within experimental errors.

A new high-order model for analysing distribution of temperature in periodic composites is proposed. The original scalar elliptic problem with Y-periodic coefficients (Y is a cube) is replaced with a vectorial elliptic problem of constant coefficients. The unknown fields are: the averaged distribution of temperature and the vector field which stands for perturbation of the temperature within the cells of periodicity. The recovery of temperature in the original composite is given by the approximation: 0(x)=0(x) +h a (x/) a (x) analogous with the first terms of the two-scale asymptotic expansion known from the homogenization theory. The functions h are defined as approximations of the solutions to the basic cell problems. In contrast to the two-scale expansion the expression for satisfies the boundary condition.

The effect of gamma irradiation on the dielectric ( 33/0, tan) and piezoelectric (d 31, g 31, K p, Q m) properties of 2Sr4Nb10O30–K6Li4Nb10O30 solid solutions (tetragonal tungsten bronze structure) was studied as a function of K6Li4Nb10O30 content. The results demonstrate that increasing the gamma dose to 9 × 105 Gy reduces 33/0 and tan. With increasing Li+ content (filling of triangular channels), d 31, g 31, K p, and Q m increase. The results are interpreted in terms of the generation of stable defects and effective redistribution of the energy of gamma radiation over the ceramic sample.

We have investigated the dynamic behavior of a nonionic micellar solution of tetra-ethylene glycoln-decylether (C10 E4) in water near its critical point in the presence of shear. The non-Newtonian behavior of the viscosity can be represented by * = [ 1 +a(S4)=]2, where* is the viscosity in the absence of shear,S is the shear rate. 4 is the lifetime of the critical Iluctuations,a is a system-dependent constant, and = 0.02 In addition, we have found that, before attaining a steady state, the sheared mixture undergoing phase separation shows significant shear-dependent rheological effects due to the presence of concentration domains.Paper presented at the Twelfth Symposium on Thermophysical Properties, June 19–24. 1994, Boulder, Colorado, U.S.A.

The stability is studied of acoustic waves generated by a time harmonic force in slabs described by: 0zg(x, y). By using a recently developed method, the exact solution of the Dirichlet problem is found for =0. It is shown that the solution is unstable against values of the frequency: =n,n. This is in agreement with the result already known in the literature, but found by other means. In a slightly deformed slab, 0<1, it is shown that stabilization of the resonant wave occurs at a time of order . This is valid if the upper boundary is a concave surface. In case of a slab with slowly moving upper boundary, only the growth rate of the amplitude of the resonant wave is reduced. This holds for a non-oscillating motion of the upper boundary. In the case of an oscillating motion a further resonance is produced.

Surface impedance measurements in the normal and superconducting state are an excellent method to study conduction electron dynamics and extended defects. Electron dynamics show up most clearly in the relaxation range, i.e., for distances traveled in one rf periods= F/ ( F Fermi velocity) being smaller or of the order of the penetration depth and mean free pathl. For materials with F107 cm/sec the relaxation range is easily accessible forf0.1 THz. Then, in the normal state, relaxation defines the surface impedance with an intrinsic penetration depth I approaching the London penetration depth L andR I 0 L/ 2 as surface resistance, allowing measurement of L and relaxation time(T, ). In the superconducting state the photon interaction scales with L/ L=1/( F dimension of Cooper pairs forl) and causes at low frequencies an absorption rate growing with, which is decreasing with F/l. The rate increase proportional to turns to a decrease above 0.1 THz, which is accompanied by a decrease ofA with frequency which is stronger for large and small F/l. These characteristic dependences allow measurement of material parameters, anisotropy, and dynamics of electrons, especially the relaxation rate. But presently, the rf surface impedanceZ is still shrinking with material improvements, which shows, clearly, that theZ=Z I+Z res is still dominated by extrinsic properties summarized inZ res. We present evidence thatZ res is due to the large leakage currentj bl and the smallj cJ of weak links where the latter destroys the intrinsic shielding from a I-thin seam J deep into the bulk. This causes rf residual lossesR res( 0)2 J 3 bl/2.R res stays finite atT-0 due to bl(T0) bl(j bl) being amplified by ( J/ I)3>103 as a weighting factor. The appropriate measure of weak links are the grain-boundary resistanceR bn((0)) enhancing JR bn andR resR bn 2 . Thus,Z res is minimal for minimal extrapolated resistivity(T0).To identify the weak links as a new entity, the H-field dependence is most helpful, because at very low fieldsH c 1J1/ J Josephson fluxons penetrate into the weak links. These Josephson fluxons show negligible flux flow or flux creep, and enhanceZ res by J(H, T) . The measuredj cJ(H, T) andj bl values explainZ res quantitatively as well as in temperature (a+T n ) (n1,T<T c /2) and in field (b+H n ) (n1,H>H c1J) dependence. The strength of the field dependencedZ res/dHZ res(H c1J )/H c2J(T) is not only a measure ofZ res andH c2J(T) but is crucial for nonlinear effects and (fluxon) noise also, which limit the performance of rf devices.

Summary Previous methods of calculating the internal impedance of rectangular and T-shaped conductors have made arbitrary assumptions about the form of the magnetic field. We have investigated the magnetic susceptibility, , and the thermal conductivity, , in magnetic fields for the four-leg spin-ladder system La2Cu2O5 single crystal. The in a magnetic field parallel to the ladder exhibits a kink at 130 K in correspondence to the magnetic ordering. The along the ladder exhibits a peak at 25 K and a shoulder at 14 K, which are probably related to the thermal conductivity due to magnons, magnon, and that due to phonons, phonon, respectively. The perpendicular to the ladder, on the other hand, exhibits only one broad peak related to phonon. The observed large anisotropy of has been explained based upon the anisotropy of magnon.

The plastic instability approach has been applied to the tensile behaviour of a continuous fibre composite. It is shown that the combination of two components with different strengths and degrees of work-hardening produces a new material with a new degree of work-hardening, which may be determined by the present analysis. The report considers the stress fatigue limit D, the fatigue to tensile strength ratio D/Rm, and the deformation fatigue limit D of pure metals. For FCC and some HCP metals there exists a linear correlation between fatigue limit and tensile strength. The fatigue limit and the fatigue ratio D/Rm depend upon the homologous temperature. The fatigue ratios of BCC metals are higher than the fatigue ratios of other metals at room temperature as is also true for metals with nearly the same homologous temperature. The deformation fatigue limit decreases rapidly when Th - 0.5 and Th 1. When Th = 1 then D = 0, D = 0 and D/Rm = 0. The deformation fatigue limits of metals belonging to the same subgroup of the periodic element system and having, similar homologous temperatures at room temperature are very similar.
